FINANCIAL RESOURCES
The Financial Resources Thermometer For 2016 as of March 31st
Budgeted Yearly Expenditures: $300,000.00
Revenue needed to be on budget: $25,525.00 per month
March Revenue $26,040.69
Revenue Excess for March $ 515.69 Revenue to date for 2016 $79,315.79
Expenditures in March $29,945.15
Expenditures, year-to-date $91,647.08
March General Fund Cash Balance $42,221.82
Some Thoughts: Giving in March exceeded the amount required to be on
budget. Income is at 25.9% for the first quarter, which is very healthy.
Expenditures are a little higher, 26.6%, but this reflects our commitment to
pay off our conference apportionments and insurances a little early. Trustees
did some good work on our land and buildings, so their budget is spent by
33.4%, slightly higher than the standard budget percentage for this date. All
other budget areas are right where they should be. We are in an excellent
financial position.
Gifts to “Expanding the Worship of God for All” (sanctuary revitalization)
stood at $503,330.63 at the end of March, marvelous when compared with
the pledge estimate of $490,000. And the campaign continues through
April, May and June! Your generous giving will enable us to continue our
faithful on-time mortgage payments to the Northwest United Methodist
Foundation.
Teams are meeting to lay the ground-work for our second Capital Campaign,
“Fulfilling the Vision” – the campaign to pay off the funds borrowed to finish
the sanctuary revitalization, and install new landscaping and signage for the
church. Our goal is to not only retire our $397,110 mortgage on the sanctu-
ary remodel – but to save $59,206 in mortgage interest by paying it off in four
years. This will mean more resources to do the work of our Lord wherever
there are needs.
Your generous hearts have made it possible for SVUMC to expand its loving
impact in the community helping us to address many of the needs that exist.
We can’t do it all, but we can make an important impact. Let us prayerfully
approach the future. With all of us acting on God’s nudges, we can build a
tomorrow in which SVUMC is a place which helps God help people for
generations to come. Blessings!
Take a moment to keep our
servicemen and women in
your prayers.

Making Disciples of Jesus by Reaching Out and Serving Others One Life at a Time 3
From Our Pastor, Mike Graef
Dear Valley Methodist Friends,
On Palm Sunday at church our Scripture was Psalm
118 – one of the great Old Testament sources of the
Palm Sunday celebration. For hundreds of years
before Jesus’ time, the people had shouted,
“Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of
the Lord.” The ancient Psalm gave the people their
reason for gathering. The NIV version of the Bible
puts it this way: “join!” “The LORD is God, and he has made his light shine on us. With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession up to the horns of the altar.” – Psalm 118.27 (NIV)
For hundreds of years, every year at this time, they
were asked by this Psalm to “join”. Join the parade,
join the festival, join the celebration, join the great
event. Be a part of it. Come out of your houses for
this. Don’t miss this!
But now Jesus was riding into Jerusalem on a
donkey. Did the people know who was coming?
The Messiah was coming. God was doing some-
thing completely new – asking the people to join
something different than they had ever joined be-
fore.
‘Join’ – what a great word! It’s an invitation, a
welcome mat. It assumes free-will. As in, “join our
ballroom dancing club, it’ll be such fun.” Come
along, join, you’ll be glad you did. But ‘join’ can be
a word of instruction too, a piece of serious guidance
– as in, please take this seriously. Join a support
group, join the Army, join AA, join a post-surgery
therapy class. Your life, our country’s future, may
depend on it.
How did the people hear ‘join’ through their Psalm
on the day Jesus entered Jerusalem? A fun invita-
tion? Or a word of serious guidance? Maybe a little
bit of both. And isn’t that the way we experience
the word in our church? How does it feel to you,
this word ‘join’? Does it feel winsome, light-hearted,
inviting? That’s our goal as we say things like:
Join in singing this next hymn/song.
Join me as I read from the Bible.
Join us in Fellowship Hall for coffee fellowship.
Join us at Hearth Homes for the yard cleanup day.
Join the church, become a member.
Join the choir.
Join the Usher/Greeter Team.
Join me in prayer, let’s bow our heads together.
Join us in our capital campaign, as we payoff the
sanctuary remodel mortgage.
Join a Friendship Dinner Group.
Join us at Camp Twinlow for our Annual All
Church Campout.
Join us next Sunday for worship again!
But there is a way that all of us need to hear the
word ‘join’ as serious guidance. I’m sure some of
the people in Jerusalem 2000 years ago would have
understood this. There is a serious side to it. Each
and every Christian needs to join in the work of the
Spirit to live life spiritually. A spiritual life is a
free-will thing. You and I decide to join the Holy
Spirit in this project every day. Or we don’t. Light
and peace, hope and faith are there for the seeker,
but each human being has to join. It’s a partnership,
a collaboration, a dialogue, a team-effort. You and
God together, with God saying, “here’s my light, join
me!” The early Methodists said this is how we are
sanctified, how we are perfected in love. We keep
joining, day after day after day until God receives us
in glory. It is serious guidance, yes.
May is the month of Pentecost, May 15th this
year – the birthday of the church 2000 years ago.
The Holy Spirit “clothed” the Apostles with power
from on high. (Luke 24.49) They were sent into
the world with that power to invite everyone to join.
It may be the best word of all to carry the meaning
for all the ministry that God has assigned for us to
do together. Our congregation lives on the power of
a 1000 yes’s each week – our members and friends
saying to God every day, when God says to each
one, “shall we walk together today?” And we say
yes. “Will you join the festal procession?”
Whether serious or fun, I’m grateful to be,
Your Pastor, Mike

United Methodist Church - On March 16 we received this award from Broadway Elementary. Lori Johnson, principal
said, “Madelyn first reached out to me a couple of years ago by stopping by the school and asking what Spokane Valley
United Methodist Church, which is located only a couple of blocks from our school, could do support the school. She
offered their services as volunteers, contributors of money and resources, and whatever else the school might need.
Since that time Madelyn and the church have been tireless enthusiastic supporters of our entire school. They provide
support directly for students, the staff, truly anything we might need.” She then listed some of the contributions we have
provided. These were the lunches, play day volunteers, money that we have contributed and the support our youth and
adults have provided for PTO events. If you would like to read more of what Lori said please visit the Mission Corner in
the Welcome Center

“I AM HUTTERITE” By Mary Ann Kirkby
This is a true story of Mary Ann’s tracing her heritage to understand the Hutterite beginnings,
culture, etc. as they are defined today. The Hutterite organized their community and faith from
the Bible (Acts 2:44-45). They fled across Europe (Russia), finally arriving in New York in 1874.
They believed in common ownership of goods which set them apart from the Amish and the Mennonites.
They founded the most fine and successful community life in our Modern World. During World War I, they
migrated to Canada to avoid persecution as conscientious objectors. The United States invited the Hutterites to
return to the United States but only one third of the communities returned. At 33 years of age, Mary Ann and
her 5 year old son struck out to find about her heritage and to learn of her past which had been hidden for years
due to prejudices and death of love ones. Finally she was able to rejoin her relatives. Great story!
Our Prayer Vigil was a blessed event and very successful. Thank you to everyone
who participated and came in to pray in the Sanctuary or from home. Our next
Prayer Vigil will be on Friday, June 3rd and Saturday, June 4th. The focus of this
vigil will be the upcoming campaign, ‘Fulfilling the Vision’. It is an opportunity to
pray for our church and her needs including praying for personal requests from congregants. It is a beautiful
reverent time spent with Our Lord. The Vigil will run from 9am to 6pm each day.
The time slots have increased to 45 minutes. We are holding the Vigil on two days
to give those of you who work an opportunity to also participate.
If you are interested in being a part of this ministry and want to reserve a specific time
contact Margie at 509-922-8371 or [email protected]
