ABOUT OISELocated in Toronto, Ontario, the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto is an international leader in the research, teaching and study of issues that matter in education.

For more than a century, we have participated in the transformation of education in Ontario through the teaching of teachers, research, graduate studies, and through our leadership in educational policy and its impact on practice around the world.

Today, OISE provides an exciting context in which to learn and to teach. Our goal is to prepare teacher candidates to become highly effective and skilled professional teachers who continue to learn and develop their expertise through inquiry and reflective practice. Utilizing a strong research base, a focus on the learner, close connections with field partners and a commitment to modeling responsive, innovative teaching practice, the programs are designed to help teacher candidates construct professional knowledge and develop deep understanding of teaching and learning for the diverse needs of our communities.

Did you know?Located in the center of the city of Toronto, on the beautiful St. George campus, OISE is the only U of T building that connects directly to the Toronto subway.

WHY CHOOSE OISE?LEARNING COMMUNITIES A key feature of our programs is the cohort learning community structure. The cohort is your home while at OISE; an intimate yet dynamic learning community. These cohorts are groups of students who take core courses together, are often grouped together in field placements, experience community building activities, share a faculty team, and engage in reflection about their learning. In both the Elementary and Secondary program, there are various school-site opportunities that allow you to spend much of your program in local area schools.

TEACHING EXCELLENCE One of the many strengths of the teaching and learning experience in our programs comes from our staffing model which includes a variety of instructors who are tenure-stream faculty, teaching-stream faculty, seconded instructors from partner school boards; graduate students, and contracted sessional instructors. This model provides students access to a wide range of perspectives and expertise from both the field and the academy. The links with our school partners ensure meaningful and productive connections between theory and practice in teacher education courses and field experiences.

SOCIAL CHANGE OISE is strongly committed to the values of equity and social justice for all students and the schools where we work. These values are foundational principles of each of our programs and an explicit focus within our course work. There is an expectation that all courses embrace and infuse these principles through discussion and application.

UNIVERSITY LIFE As a teacher education candidate at OISE, you will have access to: › one of the largest library collections related to teaching and education in North America, › the Teacher Employment Preparation Centre, a dedicated job centre for teacher education students within OISE Student Services, › a wide range of IT resources to help you prepare for the classrooms of the 21st century and, › all of the services and resources of the University of Toronto including Hart House and amazing athletics facilities.

“The elementary program is designed to bring together the theory and practice of learning and teaching to serve the diverse needs of all students in our communities. Supported by a teaching-team of education researchers and classroom teachers, our students question and experiment through action-research assignments, community projects, and the self-directed internship that informs their understanding of access, diversity and making change.”

Leslie Stewart Rose Director, Elementary Initial Teacher Education Program

“Sometimes a question is the right answer. Educators who take the time to ask why certain patterns of achievement or engagement emerge in their classes or how racial or socioeconomic or gender-based achievement gaps are perpetuated at their schools or what one teacher can do to increase educational

opportunities for students who may have been denied these are unlikely to find easy answers. But educators with a disposition toward inquiry and a curiosity about their own practice will find a stimulating

profession and important work that is central to virtually all visions of positive social change.”

Joe Flessa Associate Professor, OISE

“As the school population becomes more diverse, preparing teachers to respond to this reality takes on great importance. I have been actively involved in OISE’s Outreach Program (Future Teachers) that focuses on attracting

students from communities traditionally under-represented in the teaching profession. As part of this initiative, teacher candidates visit schools in these communities and speak with students in their classes. This is a very rewarding

initiative for the teacher candidates, students and me as we work to respond to the growing diversity in our schools in positive ways.” To learn more about OISE’s Outreach Initiative please visit the Future Teachers website at

www.oise.utoronto.ca/futureteachers.

Ann Lopez Lecturer, Initial Teacher Education Program

“OISE’s secondary cohorts present beginning teachers with an engaging range of choices. From technological studies to international languages, OISE’s cohorts provide a focused set of courses and experiences that prepare creative, inclusive and capable teachers for a range of school and community contexts – local, Catholic, urban or global – there’s a cohort to fit your needs and passions.”

FAQWHAT IS “INITIAL TEACHER EDUCATION”? The term “initial teacher education” describes a program

of professional education taken in order to be eligible to

become certified to teach in elementary or secondary

schools. The programs offered by OISE are specifically

structured to meet the requirements of the Ontario

College of Teachers (OCT) (the licensing authority for

teachers in Ontario).

The term “initial” highlights the fact that the professional

education of teachers is an ongoing process. The

professional education acquired in an “initial teacher

education program” should be viewed as a starting point

and a foundation on which to build. OISE, through its

Graduate Degree Programs and Continuing Education

for Teachers programs, offers many different

opportunities for continuous professional learning and

development.

WHAT IS A “CONSECUTIVE” PROGRAM AND HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM A “CONCURRENT” PROGRAM? A “consecutive” program is an initial teacher education

program that can be taken by candidates who have

already completed a university degree. A “concurrent”

program combines undergraduate degree studies and

initial teacher education into one extended program of

study.

“I learned that I don’t have to be mainstream or compromise my position to make a difference. At OISE my voice was heard!”

Judith Miller B.Ed., Intermediate/Senior, Education & Work Cohort

“I worked closely with highly regarded instructors who were willing to spend time mentoring their students outside of the classroom. It is obvious that the instructors love their work. It is inspiring to watch and learn from them.”

Jamie Giannou B.Ed., Junior/Intermediate, Regional Option

HOW LONG IS THE PROGRAM? The Consecutive Bachelor of Education and Diploma in

Technological Education programs are one-year

programs.

The Master of Arts in Child Study and Education and

Master of Teaching programs are two year programs.

The Concurrent program is five years in length and the

candidate earns two degrees.

HOW MUCH TIME IS SPENT IN PRACTICE TEACHING AND OTHER FIELD PLACEMENTS? For the Consecutive Bachelor of Education program and

the Technological Education regular program, there is a

minimum of 68 days.

Technological Education Apprenticeship Program

students have the option of either 68 days of unpaid field

placements or equivalent long term occasional teaching.

For the two-year programs, the Master of Teaching

program consists of 94 days and the MA in Child Study

in Education consists of 92 days.

CAN I TAKE THE PROGRAM PART-TIME? No. All programs are offered on a full-time basis.

“When I started at OISE I was a student in the truest sense and now, in that same sense,

I am a teacher.”

Myles Wagman B.Ed., Intermediate/Senior,

Global Education Cohort

“I loved that OISE splits their students into cohorts based

on what area of education you want to focus. I was particularly drawn to the

Inner City Option: it was a great opportunity to focus

on teaching in the areas that were most desperate for

good teachers.”

Natasha Valz B.Ed., Primary/Junior,

Inner City Option

“At OISE, I was better able to understand how I, as an educator, could impact change in our youth so that they can become active members of a democratic society.”

Alnoor Karim B.Ed., Intermediate/Senior, Education & Work Cohort

“The professors and students in the MT program have

enhanced my insight and experience in the classroom.

My learning experiences have been both rich and diverse.”
