INTO MISCHIEF FILLY TOPS OBS DAY 3By Ron Mitchell
For the second consecutive day a telephone bid
secured the session-topper at the Ocala Breeders'
Sales Co.'s June 2-year-olds in training and horses of
racing age sale.
John Fort of Peachtree Stable went to $250,000 to
buy an Into Mischief filly from the Eisaman Equine
consignment during a session that saw numbers
continue to spiral downward.
The filly is out of the Consolidator mare Simple
Symphony, a half sister to stakes winners My Lady
Avie and Doc Calls Her Kate. Bred in Kentucky by
Machmer Hall, she was bought by Gainesway for
$230,000 at the 2015 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling
sale.

Barry Eisaman said Fort is a client who saw the
filly earlier in the year at his farm and thought she
would sell well, even in the challenging June market.
"She's a wonderful filly," Eisaman said. "She would
have been a standout in any of the earlier (2-year-
olds in training) sales."
The three-day gross of $12,707,900 for the 462
horses sold has fallen 34.1% from $18,191,400 for
465 sold at the same point in 2015. The $27,506
average represents a 29.7% decline from last year’s
three-session average of $39,121. With 43 horses not
sold, the RNA rate was 20.7%.
The numbers for the penultimate session mir-
rored those of the previous two days, with OBS
reporting 164 horses sold for $4,096,700, a $24,980
average and a $12,000 median. The average is a
33.3% decline from a year ago, when 156 head aver-
aged $42,965 on gross receipts of $6,702,500, with
an $18,000 median.
Sales director Tod Wojciechowski said the num-
bers reflect the overall sales trends of good horses
being in greater demand.
"I know it sounds like a broken record, but there
are still some nice horses to be sold tomorrow," he
said.
Wojciechowski said the session’s low RNA rate
indicates consignors have an "understanding of what
is in front of them and are making decisions to sell."
Three juveniles shared the co-second highest
price of $190,000.

‘FASTNET’, MAJESTICPERFECTION 2YOs TO SHINEBy Ron Mitchell
A colt by Coolmore Australia stallion Fastnet
Rock out of a full sister to multiple group I
winner Lush Lashes has generated a lot of inter-
est leading up to the June 17 final session of the
Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s sale of 2-year-olds in
training and horses of racing age.
"We're here to get them all sold, but he is one
of the buzz horses in the sale," said consignor
Tom McCrocklin. "He's very talented and classy.
He is a grand horse with a stallion's pedigree."
The colt, Hip 1109, was produced from the
unraced Galileo mare Alone and was bred in
Kentucky by Don Alberto Corp. Lush Lashes won
three group I races in England and Ireland and
is from the extended family of group I winners
Saumarez and Buzzword, as well as many group
II and group III winners.
The colt breezed a quarter-mile in :21, co-sec-
ond fastest during the six days of work outs. Mc-
Crocklin had various reports from clockers that
the colt galloped out three furlongs in :32 3/5 to
:33, following the timed work.
McCrocklin bought the colt privately after
he failed to meet his reserve on a final bid of
$140,000 when consigned by Lane's End at the
2015 Keeneland September yearling sale.
Also cataloged Friday is Hip 1026, a Majes-
ticperfection filly that had the fastest quar-
ter-mile work of :20 4/5 for Susan Montayne's
SBM Training and Sales. Produced from the
winning Cox's Ridge mare Undervalued, the filly
is a half sister to stakes winner Overvalued and
was bred in Kentucky by Brereton C. Jones. SBM
bought the filly for $162,000 from Jones' consign-
ment at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July sale.
"I have a filly that's fast and vets 100% clean,"
Montayne said. "I would hope she's in the top
10% of horses in the sale."
A well-bred offering consigned by Eddie
Woods is Hip 936, a Distorted Humor half broth-
er to Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands
(gr. I) winner and sire Super Saver and to grade
III winner and sire Brethren. Bred by Hill 'n' Dale
Equine Holdings and Glen Hill Farm, he was
bought back at Keeneland for $275,000.
"He's typical of the family and is coming
around but isn't there yet," Woods said. "Poten-
tially a very nice horse down the road." BH

HAWKBILL VICTORIOUS AT ROYAL ASCOTBy Sarah Troxell
In his first group stakes attempt, Godolphin's
Hawkbill drew away from the field in the final
furlong of the Tercentenary Stakes (Eng-III) at
Royal Ascot, winning by 1 1/4 lengths from his
fast-finishing Godolphin teammate Prize Money.
A Kentucky-bred by Kitten's Joy out of the
Giant's Causeway mare Trensa, Hawkbill was
bred by the Helen K. Groves Revokable Trust. He
has raced solely in England, and the Tercente-
nary Stakes marked his fifth consecutive victory,
stretching back to his maiden win in July last year.
He came into the 1 1/4-mile Tercentenary off
a victory in the Havana Gold Newmarket Stakes
April 30.
"I've always thought a lot of this fella. He's got
a big future ahead of him," jockey William Buick
said.
Kentucky-bred Long Island Sound (War Front—
Treasure Trail, by Pulpit) rounded out the top
three in the field of nine.
Meanwhile, last year's Irish and European high-
weight for more than 13 1/2 furlongs, Order of St.
George, lived up to his distance-loving reputation
while going 2 1/2 miles in the Gold Cup in Honour
of the Queen's 90th Birthday (Eng-I).
Sent off the 4-5 favorite in the field of 17, Lloyd
Williams, Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor, and
Derrick Smith's Order of St. George delivered an
impressive late kick in the final furlongs to charge
home down the center of the course for a clear
victory.
The 4-year-old Galileo colt, who won last year's
1 3/4-mile Palmerstown House Estate Irish St.
Leger (Ire-I), was guided to victory by Ryan Moore
for trainer Aidan O'Brien, who secured his seventh
Gold Cup.
"You never know if they are going to get the
trip if they have never been over that," O'Brien
said. "He won the Irish St Leger on soft ground by
11 or 12 lengths off a strong pace, and if he wasn't
going to stay, there were very few horses that
would.
"The lads did a great job getting him back as
he had a little setback at the end of last year and
we were a little bit worried if we were going to get
there. He just has a big Rolls Royce engine."
Three lengths back in second was Mizzou,
owned by Southern California's Jon Kelly. The
Irish-bred 5-year-old son of Galileo earned his
first group I-placing. Luca Cumani trains Mizzou
and Andrea Atzeni guided him to the runner-up
finish.
Earlier in the day, Hat Creek Racing and Head
of Plains Partners' Red Lodge finished ninth
against males in the Norfolk Stakes (Eng-II). The
five-furlong juvenile test went to The Cool Silk
Partnership's Prince of Lir (Kodiac).
Trained by Wesley Ward, Red Lodge entered off
a 3 3/4-length victory in a five-furlong maiden race
on the Belmont Park turf where the daughter of
Midshipman set a course record of :55.73.

AMERICAN PEDIGREES AT ROYAL ASCOTBy Tom Hall
Kentucky-breds continued their run of good fortune
on day 3 of the Royal Ascot meet.
In the group III Tercentenary Stakes (formerly the
Hampton Court Stakes), Kentucky-bred Hawkbill led
home a Godolphin 1-2 finish, defeating Prize Money
by 1 1/4 lengths in the 10-furlong event.
Bred by the Helen K. Groves Revokable Trust,
Hawkbill is a flashy chestnut son of turf champion Kit-
ten's Joy, whose sire El Prado was champion juvenile
in Ireland in 1991.
Although bred in Ireland by Lyonstown Stud, El
Prado is a prime example of the interconnection
between the U.S. and Europe in terms of racing and
bloodstock.
He is by Sadler's Wells, who was bred by Claiborne
Farm in Kentucky but earned his reputation on the
tracks and in the breeding shed and foaling barns of
Europe.
El Prado’s dam, Lady Capulet, also a Claiborne
product, won the Irish One Thousand Guineas (Ire-I).
Her sire Sir Ivor won the Epsom Derby and Two Thou-
sand Guineas but is as American as they come, being
by Sir Gaylord out of Attica, whose third dam Alcibia-
des won the 1930 Kentucky Oaks.
Groves homebred
Trensa, the dam of
Hawkbill, is a graded
stakes-placed daugh-
ter of Giant's Cause-
way, a horse whose
American roots found
firm footing on the
racetracks of Ireland
and England—enough
to be Europe’s Horse
of the Year in 2000.
Her dam, Serape,
is a grade-I winning
Groves homebred
from the classic-pro-
ducing branch of the
Mr. Prospector family
tree.
Hawkbill is inbred
to Northern Dancer—
but these days who
isn’t—as well as to
Prince John and Rob-
erto. However, the 4x5 cross of Epsom Derby winner
Roberto seems to be a theme that runs through the
best of Kitten’s Joy’s stakes winners. At least 15 of his
74 (20.3%) career stakes winners carry inbreeding to
Roberto, including four of his 10 grade I winners.
Even Ascot’s marathon Gold Cup in Honour of The
Queen’s 90th Birthday (Eng-I) raced over 20 furlongs
had U.S. flavor. Irish-bred Order of St George, repre-
senting the Coolmore and Ballydoyle forces, won by
three lengths over another son of Galileo owned by
American Jon Kelly.
Although Order of St George’s sire might be the
king of European stallions, his dam Another Storm is
a U.S.-bred daughter of Gone West who won only a 1
1/16-mile maiden race at Saratoga.
Her dam, Storm Song, however, was champion
juvenile filly in 1996 on the strength of a pair of grade
I wins in the Frizette Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup
Juvenile Fillies.
Her sire was Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner
Summer Squall, a Storm Bird half brother to classic
winner and leading sire A.P. Indy (Seattle Slew) out of
Kentucky Broodmare of the Year Weekend Surprise.
Classic winners abound in the pedigree and add for
good measure Triple Crown winner Secretariat—
thrown in the mix as the broodmare sire of Gone
West. BH

of grade I winner Peeping Tom. Her family has also
produced graded stakes winners Sun King, Traitor, and
Ocean Drive.
Get Stormy, a multiple grade I winning son of
Stormy Atlantic, stands at Crestwood Farm near Lexing-
ton, Ky., for $5,000.
Heavy favorite My California took a field of seven
challengers through fractions of :22.01 and :45.30 in
the five-furlong, $56,000 maiden special weight race at
Santa Anita Park before pulling away from the field to
win by daylight in :58.06.
The Mercedes Stables homebred was making her
second start. She is trained by Robertino Diodoro, who
is currently the meet's leading trainer by percentage of
winners and percentage of in the money finishes. My
California was ridden by Tyler Baze.
The winner is the first foal of Give My Regards
(Smart Strike), who was also bred and raced by
Mercedes Stables. She had been offered in foal to
Sky Mesa at the 2015 Keeneland November sale and
bought back at $55,000. Give My Regards is out of
unraced Broadway Hoofer, the dam of graded stakes
winner Broadway Empire and stakes winner Cinderel-
la's Dream.
Calimonco is a graded stakes-placed son of Storm
Cat. He won the Wickerr Stakes at Del Mar before fin-
ishing third in the Citation Handicap (gr. II) and the Del
Mar Mile Handicap (gr. II). Calimonco stands at Ballena
Vista Farm in California for $1,500. BH
FIRST WINNERS FOR GET STORMY, CALIMONCOBy Eric Mitchell
The races faced by the first winners for freshman sires
Get Stormy and Calimonco could not have been
more different.
Get Stormy's first runner Get Sassy persevered in a
battle down the stretch, grabbing the lead only a couple
jumps before the wire, while Calimonco's My California
took a commanding early lead and rolled to 9 1/4-length
victory.
Get Sassy won a $27,000, 4 1/2-furlong maiden
special weight race at Presque Island Downs for owners
Duncan Lloyd and Blazing Meadows Farm. She is trained
by Tim Hamm and was bred in Pennsylvania by John
Penn, who sold her to Lloyd as a weanling for $5,000 at
the 2014 Keeneland November breeding stock sale.
Making her first start, Get Sassy sat in a rail-hugging
fourth place behind the leaders through much of the
race as the leaders took the field through fractions of
:22.87 and :46.23. As the field came out of the turn, jock-
ey Mario Pino took Get Sassy off the rail, where running
room had evaporated, and began a furious rally at the
leader and favorite Diamond Dollar. Get Sassy got a neck
in front, stopping the timer in :52.41.
Get Sassy is out of the Quiet American mare A Little

CLASSY HANDS IN POKER STAKESBy Evan Hammonds
It may carry only grade III status, but Belmont Park's
June 18 Poker Stakes (gr. IIIT) carries a grade I line-
up, even if only six passed the entry box.
Three of the runners have won at the grade I
level within the last 12 months, and they square off
against King Kreesa, last year's Poker winner, and
two from trainer Chad Brown, who won four stakes
last weekend, including the 1-2-3 finishers in the New
York Stakes (gr. IIT).
The grade I winners—Grand Arch, Force the Pass,
and Obviously—drew the inside posts for the one
mile contest.
Jim and Susan Hill's Grand Arch won last fall's
Shadwell Turf Mile (gr. IT) at Keeneland and was third
in the Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT). The 7-year-old geld-
ing's lone 2016 outing resulted in a third-place finish,
beaten three-quarters of a length by Takeover Tar-
get in a soggy Dixie Stakes (gr. IIT) on the Preakness
Stakes (gr. I) undercard May 21. The earner of more
than $1.8 million only has one Belmont turf start on
his 25-race resume, a fifth-place finish last summer
behind King Kreesa in the
Forbidden Apple Stakes.
Colts Neck Stables'
Force the Pass was a
10-1 winner of last sum-
mer's Belmont Derby In-
vitational (gr. IT) at 1 1/4
miles. Running on the
lead this April in Gulf-
stream Park's Appleton
(gr. IIIT) at a mile, the
4-year-old Speightstown
colt was caught late
by Reporting Star. He
makes his debut over
Belmont's main turf
course for trainer Allen
Goldberg.
Obviously also makes
his Belmont bow in the
Poker. The multiple
grade I winner won back
to back Shoemaker Mile
Stakes (gr. IT) in 2014
and 2015 at both Bet-
fair Hollywood Park and Santa Anita. Two outings this
winter in Southern California resulted in photo-finish
defeats in grade II company, the latest in the Feb. 13
Arcadia at a mile. Phil D'Amato trains.
Brown trains Takeover Target, who won the
nine-furlong Hill Prince (gr. IIIT) at Belmont last fall in
addition to the Dixie. The son of Harlan's Holiday is
accomplished over both turf courses at Belmont and
fired a bullet :47 1/5 half-mile over the course June
16.
Brown's other entrant—New York-bred Offering
Plan—has only made eight starts, but three of those
have come in graded company. He placed in the
Pilgrim Stakes (gr. IIT) at 2 in 2014 and was a closing
fifth at Del Mar last fall in the Hollywood Derby (gr.
IT).
King Kreesa is one of the kings of the Belmont turf,
compiling a 6-1-2 record in 12 starts over the main
turf course. The 7-year-old New York-bred owned
by Gerald and Susan Kresa was second last time out
on New York Showcase Day in the one-mile Kingston
Stakes. King Kreesa won last year's Poker over Vyjack
(Tepin's half brother) in 1:33.48. BH

THE PIZZA MAN RETURNS IN WISE DAN STAKESBy Evan Hammonds
The Pizza Man returns to action June 18 as the like-
ly choice in Churchill Downs' $200,000 Wise Dan
Stakes (gr. IIT), formerly the Firecracker and one of
five graded stakes on the night program.
Versatility is a virtue, and The Pizza Man has it.
Winner of last year's 12-furlong Stars and Stripes
Stakes (gr. IIIT), 10-furlong Arlington Million (gr. IT),
and just missing in Keeneland's Shadwell Turf Mile
(gr. IT), The Pizza Man is in his wheelhouse at 1 1/16
miles, the Wise Dan trip. He's 8-1-0 in 10 lifetime
starts at the distance.
Bred and raced by Richard and Karen Papiese's
Midwest Thoroughbreds, The Pizza Man was fifth
in his first 2016 outing back in early February in the
Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap (gr. IT). A year ago
he kicked off his campaign with a win in Churchill
Downs' Opening Verse Stakes at 1 1/16 miles.
This year's Opening Verse winner, Thatcher Street,
will break just to The Pizza Man's inside from post 1.
The 5-year-old gelding by Street Sense is 3-2-0 in five
Churchill turf outings and has three stakes placings
to go along with the win on May 21. Randall Bloch
and John Seiler, who share ownership of Thatcher
Street with Phil Milner and Fred Merritt's Amtietam,
had success in last year's program, taking the Matt
Winn Stakes (gr. II) with Island Town.
Trainer Mark Casse, who sent out Tepin to win
Royal Ascot's Queen Anne Stakes (Eng-I) June 14, will
be represented by a pair in the Wise Dan. Conquest
Stables' Conquest Typhoon, an allowance optional
claiming winner at Gulfstream in March, has strug-
gled a bit in high-end stakes company. At 2 the
Stormy Atlantic colt won the grade III Cecil B. Demille
Stakes over Del Mar's turf and was fourth in the
Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (gr. IT).
Casse also trains Za Approval, an 8-year-old
Ghostzapper gelding who actually ran behind Wise
Dan three times in grade I events in 2013 and 2014.
He faded after setting the pace in the May 21 Dixie
Stakes (gr. IIT) at Pimlico in his seasonal bow and
figures to move forward off that effort.
Diane Perkins' Kasaqui, trained by Ignacio Correas,
seeks to bounce back after falling in the May 7 Wood-
ford Reserve Turf Classic (gr. IT). The Argentina-bred
gelding won over the Keeneland turf back in April.
Morton Fink's Wise Dan, the two-time Horse of
the Year, won the Firecracker in 2011 and 2013. The
retired gelding will be paraded in the paddock with
the horses for the race and will remain there while
the race is being run. BH

THIRD-PARTY LASIX ADMINISTRATION APPROVEDBy Jeremy Balan
Although many local veterinarians again voiced
opposition, the California Horse Racing Board on
June 16 at Santa Anita Park approved the third-party
administration of race-day Lasix.
The California Office of Administrative Law
must approve the measure before it is official.
The CHRB voted 5-0—with member Steve Bene-
to absent and Richard Rosenberg abstaining—to
approve the proposal after an hour of discussion.
It was also of note that the California Veterinary
Medical Board supported the third-party Lasix
proposal, after opposing previous iterations.
The aspect that earned the support of the Vet-
erinary Medical Board was that third-party admin-
istration of the medication, under the proposal,
would only be given "after the owner, trainer, or
owner's veterinarian has consulted with the Lasix
veterinarian."
"The issue is that nobody with an interest in
the outcome of the race is allowed in the stall with
needles and syringes on race day," CHRB equine
medical director Rick Arthur said during the meet-
ing. "That's the bottom line."
Some local veterinarians, as they’ve expressed
in the past, took exception with the proposal on
the grounds that it fixes a nonexistent problem
and insinuates private veterinarians are doing
something wrong.
“In some of the language I’ve read as to why
this is being done, it specifically states it’s to get
the private practitioners out of the stalls on race
day,” said Dr. Karen Valko. “That’s implying we’re
doing something wrong. I take offense to that.
Whether that’s exactly what’s meant or not, that’s
what is implied.”
Local veterinarians also said the third-party
administration would hurt their business and
livelihood, but that point was countered by Robert
O'Neill, The Stronach Group's newly appointed Di-
rector of Equine Health and Safety, who previous-
ly served under the same title at Gulfstream Park.
“This isn’t that complicated. It’s all about integ-
rity. It’s all about putting the horse first,” O’Neill
said. “Vets commented to me from Florida, ‘Thank
God we’re done with Lasix.’ I can take care of my
horses, look at my horses, and treat my horses,
and get them where they need to be.
“I’ve talked to vets in New York (who say) ‘We
don’t miss it at all. We miss none of this stuff with
Lasix. We don’t want to do it any more and our
practice has gotten bigger. We can concentrate
on the wellness of the horse and the individual
animal, not worrying about giving Lasix shots all
day.'”
The CHRB approval ends what has been a
nearly four-year process to implement third-party
Lasix, or furosemide, which is used to prevent ex-
ercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage in horses,
also called Salix.
With approval by OAL, the change in Lasix ad-
ministration would move California into line with
the National Uniform Medication Program on this
issue. BH

BREEDERS' CUP ADDS OWNER PERKS, RAISES FEESBy Frank Angst
Increased entry fees await participating owners in
this year's Breeders' Cup World Championships, but
Breeders' Cup officials say many owner benefits have
been added to the event in recent years and more will
be unveiled in 2016.
Of course the biggest benefit for owners was an-
nounced June 13: The Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) and
Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT) will each receive $1
million boosts in purse money, with the Classic going to
$6 million and the Turf going to $4 million. Those two
races—along with the other 11 Breeders' Cup races—
also will see increased pre-entry and entry fees for
owners.
The Breeders' Cup Board of Directors approved the
increased fees at a February meeting. For the Classic
and Turf, the combined pre-entry and entry fees will
be at 2.5% of each total purse, while all other races go
to 3%. That increase sets the fees at $150,000 for the
Classic, up from $100,000, and at $100,000 for the Turf,
up from $60,000.
Fees for other races are as follows: races with a $1
million purse will go from $20,000 last year to $30,000
this year; $1.5 million-purse races go from $30,000 to
$45,000; and $2 million-purse races go from $40,000 to
$60,000.
Breeders' Cup senior vice president of racing and
nominations Dora Delgado said that pre-entry and
entry fees were restored to pre-2013 levels for many of
the races. She said the board had temporarily lowered
fees for the past three years, which previously had been
set at 3% of purses.
"Since 2003, our fees have ranged from 3% total,
down to 2%, and are in line with large racing events that
do not have a title sponsor or are invitational," Delgado
said.
Breeders' Cup also has added benefits in recent
years, including paid travel fees of up to $10,000 for
North American horses shipping into a venue and up
to $40,000 if traveling internationally. Many starters
also have their fees paid for by winning Breeders' Cup
Challenge "Win and You're In" races. Breeders' Cup esti-
mates 185 horses will receive these benefits this year.
"Raising purses on our two flagship races raises the
profile of those races both domestically and interna-
tionally and acts as an incentive to keep horses racing
longer," Delgado said. "They make the Turf and Classic
the richest two races in North America until the Pe-
gasus Cup runs for the first time."
Delgado said the structure of purse payouts also has
been changed, now paying down to eighth place.
"We made it our focus this year to not only offer
more purse and awards money, which total $28 million
in 2016, but to change the payouts down to the eighth
finish position, continue with out-of-state shipper travel
allowances, focus on greater hospitality to our owners
and participants, and to provide world class racing for
our fans," Delgado said. BH

JAPANESE WINNER FOR STREET SENSEBy Naohiro Goda
Street Sense had the first winner from his sole
Japanese-sired crop when Logi Sense won her
debut June 11 over 1,400 meters (about seven
furlongs) on the turf at Tokyo Racecourse.
The first 2016 juvenile starter for Street Sense
at a Japan Racing Association track, Logi Sense is
out of the Sunday Silence mare Shirley Poppies,
who has produced seven winners from nine run-
ners.
Two others by the stallion started at the Na-
tional Association of Racing track at Monbetsu.
His daughter Liberalism finished fifth June 8, and
his son Brave was third June 9th.
Street Sense stood at Darley in Kentucky for
five seasons, shuttling to Darley’s Australia com-
plex prior to being sent to Japan in 2013 for one
breeding season.
In Japan, Street Sense stood at the Darley
Japan Stallion Complex for ¥4.5 million ($48,740)
where he covered 144 mares, with 95 foals result-
ing the following spring.
He has sired four Japanese stakes winners
from crops conceived outside Japan, including
Knowledge who is a 6-year-old horse owned by
Sheikh Mohammed that has won five races, in-
cluding the March 21 Yumemizuki Stakes, and has
earned ¥116,930,000 ($1,122,225).
Street Sense is currently standing at Darley
USA near Lexington, Ky. for $45,000. BH

RESURGENT NORTHERN AFLEETBy Eric Mitchell
For Taylor Made Farm, the 2016 breeding season is like the calm before the storm. Next year the
farm near Nicholasville, Ky., is planning to stand international superstar California Chrome, a dual U.S. classic winner and victor of the 2016 Dubai World Cup (UAE-I). Ben Taylor, vice president of Taylor Made Stallions, talks about the 2016 breeding season, which included a bit of a sur-prise—a resurging interest in Northern Afleet, the 23-year-old son of Afleet out of the Nureyev mare Nureyette. Since 2012 Northern Afleet has aver-aged 69 mares bred a year, with 2014 his slowest year with 50 mares bred. This year he is expected to breed 110 mares.
MarketWatch: So talk about where Northern
Afleet is in his breeding career and where the
renewed interest is coming from?
Ben Taylor: We've pared down our number
of stallions over the years to three. We've kept
horses we felt would be commercial and whose
books would fill.
Northern Afleet is getting up there (in age), so
he's reached that plateau and that price range
where people just want something new. They
gravitate toward the young horses, even though
he's a really nice horse and gets runners.
What happened this year is he got a couple
of really nice runners in Saudi Arabia. His first
stakes winners in Saudi Arabia.
(Leeman won the King Abdullah bin Abdualaziz Cup Jan. 22 and placed second in the King Abdu-laziz Cup Feb. 27; Mamlouk won the King Faisal bin Abdualaziz Cup Jan. 23 and was second in the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cup Feb. 14. All these races are not internationally recognized group races but carry group I status in Saudi Ara-bia.)
MW: What has been the response to those
Saudi Arabian stakes winners?
BT: Well, half his book this year will be made
up of mares owned by Saudi Arabians. They
tried to buy the horse, but at his age we were
not sending him over there. So they started buy-
ing mares in foal to him and breeding to him. I
think we've gotten 15 calls from people wanting
to buy mares bred to him or buy weanlings or
buy yearlings by him.
MW: Taylor Made also stands first-crop
sire Astrology and Graydar, who will have his
first yearlings this year. How did their season
go?
BT: Astrology has four winners from six
starters, so we have seen a spike in calls
late in the season. Those winners definitely
helped us sell some seasons over the past
couple of weeks. I think he'll be close to 110.
Graydar has been well-received and got
significant support from his ownership group,
Twin Creeks Racing, and the shareholders. He
will get a bit over 125 mares. BH
