FIGURES SOLID THROUGH PENULTIMATE DAYBy Glenye Cain Oakford
The Keeneland November breeding stock sale's
gross and average remained in positive territo-
ry as the auction's penultimate day ended Nov. 12,
though median is slightly behind last year's cumula-
tive figure.
This year's November sale is one day longer than
last year's, 12 days versus 11. The 2015 auction sur-
passed the 2014 sale's total gross on Tuesday, and,
as of Thursday, the 2015 gross is running 5.8% ahead
of last year's total. So far, the 2015 auction has sold
2,375 horses for $217,740,000; last year, 2,512 hors-
es brought $205,899,500. The overall average price
of $91,680 is 12% above last year's $81,966. The
$34,000 median, however, is 2.9% lower.
Buy-backs remain up, 25% compared to 22% for
the whole 2014 sale.
Thursday's session sold 175 horses for
$1,754,500, a 64% increase over last year's final-day
total for 162. The $10,026 average was 52% higher,
and the $6,000 median was up 33%. The RNA rate
also was lower at 26%, dropping from 28%. BH

CALUMET AGGRESSIVELY BUYING MARESBy Ian Tapp
Brad Kelley's Calumet Farm has been busy
at Keeneland November. Through 11 of 12
sessions, Calumet is far and away the leading
buyer by horses purchased at 71—65 of which
are broodmares or broodmare prospects. Its
$8,717,000 spent trails only Crupi's New Castle
by gross.
The mares will support the farm's growing
stallion roster, which currently totals 13 in
Kentucky. English Channel, who stands for a
$25,000 fee, tops an eclectic list of classic-dis-
tance performers and international bloodlines.
Calumet's top purchase at $575,000 is the
12-year-old A.P. Indy mare Teammate, an out-
standing racemare and half sister to War
Front in foal to Candy Ride. Teammate is
one of seven A.P. Indy daughters Calumet
bought at Keeneland November.
The second-highest price paid is
$310,000 for Riviera Romper, a 4-year-old
Tapit mare in foal to Speightstown. Calu-
met has purchased 23 daughters of Tapit at
the sale.
General manager Eddie Kane and stal-
lion season sales director Charlie Boden
have signed the tickets for Calumet. BH

NEW STALLIONS SIGN OF GROWTH IN MDBy Tom LaMarra
Maryland’s resurgence in Thoroughbred
breeding that began in 2012 has contin-
ued through this year, in large part because
of a stable racing environment and revenue
from video lottery terminals at the state's
casinos.
In late October, Heritage Stallions an-
nounced graded stakes-winning millionaires
Bourbon Courage (Lion Heart) and Imagining
(Giant's Causeway) will begin stallion careers
at the farm in 2016. It's a sign the number of
Maryland stallions, which has hovered at 30-
35 the past six years, may begin to grow.
For the first 10 months of 2015, the 80%
share of VLT revenue for Thoroughbred racing
amounted to $36.8 million, most of which is ded-
icated to purses. Of the purse share, 11% goes to
the Maryland-bred fund. And statistics show in-
creasing interest in Maryland breeding.

The number of mares bred was at a low of 548
in 2011 but jumped to 732 in 2014, according to
The Jockey Club. Live foal reports through Nov. 12
totaled 607 for 2015, indicating continued growth in
the Maryland foal crop. BH

DAIWA MAJOR EYES DEEP IMPACT'S CROWNBy Naohiro Goda
First crowned JRA leading sire of 2-year-olds in
2010, Deep Impact has kept the position for five
consecutive years but now is in a tussle to defend his
title. As of Nov. 8, Deep Impact, with ¥325.4 million
($2.7 million) in earnings, ranks second behind Daiwa
Major, whose 2-year-olds have earned ¥474.5 ($3.9
million).
Daiwa Major, a Shadai-bred son of Sunday Silence,
joined the Shadai stallion roster in 2008. He was
crowned leading freshman sire in 2011 and also is
annually among the top 10 Japanese sires.
The determining races for 2015 leading sire could
be the Dec. 13 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies (Jpn-I) and the
Dec. 20 Asahi Hai (Jpn-I). Deep Impact has the upper
hand for the $1 million Juvenile Fillies, having sired
the first four finishers in that race's prep, the Nov. 7
Fantasy Stakes (Jpn-II).
Daiwa Major's unbeaten son Ball Lightning, winner
of the Nov. 7 Keio Hai Nisai Stakes (Jpn-II), is the lead-
ing contender for the Asahi Hai Futurity, which carries
the total purse of $1.09 million. BH
COLONIAL TAKES ANOTHER SHOT AT DATESBy Tom LaMarra
The ongoing battle over the future of live Thor-
oughbred racing in Virginia will continue Nov. 17
when a hearing is held on Colonial Downs' applica-
tion to offer four days of racing in 2016. The track
had applied to race Nov. 30 this year but withdrew
that application.
Colonial hasn't held live Thoroughbred racing
since 2013 because of a dispute with the Virginia
Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association
over the number of racing dates. A new group, the
Virginia Equine Alliance, offered limited turf racing
at Great Meadow this year and gradually plans to
expand racing days in the state.
Colonial, as part of its application to race Sept.
24-27 next year, has included a 25-year contract with
a group called Old Dominion Thoroughbred Horse-
men's Association. Complicating matters, the Virginia
Racing Commission, which will hold the Nov. 17 hear-
ing, has recognized the Virginia HBPA as the official
horsemen's representative.
Virginia HBPA executive director Frank Petramalo
Jr. Nov. 12 said there have been no recent negotia-
tions with Colonial, and that the group will oppose its
2016 application. BH

A FEW QUESTIONS WITH MADISON SCOTTBy Ian Tapp
Today's MarketWatch interview is with
Madison Scott, a 21-year-old student
currently working a fall-semester internship
with Blood-Horse. On Nov. 8, Scott with
partner Ian Bennett purchased a weanling
pinhook prospect at the Keeneland Novem-
ber sale. The two University of Kentucky stu-
dents formed a syndicate to purchase the
horse, their first foray into the bloodstock
business.
Blood-Horse Daily: What encouraged
your first venture into pinhooking?
Madison Scott: Ian and I had been looking
forward to buying a horse for years. We're still
in school but were ready to do something in the
industry. We rationalized our decision by figur-
ing we had fewer financial obligations now than
we ever will. The main reason we wanted to buy
was as a learning exercise—there's a lot that
goes into this that we had no experience with.
There are eight other partners in the syndi-
cate, ranging from 2% to 25% ownership. There
were 100 shares available for $250 apiece—
cheap enough so that some of our college
friends could join. It's a one-time investment
with funds held in an LLC account and bills
drawn from there.
BHD: What were your budgeting consider-
ations for the pinhook?
MS: Initially, we did not plan on vetting
anything because we were working on a pretty
tight budget. We would rather spend the extra
money on buying a better horse than spend
it on vetting two or three horses. We did build
$1,000 into the cash flows for surgery in case of
any existing or potential chips.
Matt Koch of Shawhan Place agreed to be
in on the pinhook with us—he was actually our
first investor—so Matt gave us some basic (cost)
assumptions for board and days of sale prep,
and we also had a good idea of what our vet
and farrier expenses would be.
BHD: What was your selection process,
and what do you like about your purchase?
MS: We started looking in Book 4 to fit our
budget. Our list was mostly based on sires we
thought were affordable. There were around
200 horses on that initial list, mostly first-season
or proven sires.
We ended up with a short list of eight horses
in Session 7. One of our top choices was Hip
2283, a Discreet Cat filly, and she was the sec-
ond of those through the ring. We felt lucky to
have gotten her for $13,500. She's out of a mare
who is a full sister to grade II winner This Ones
for Phil—about as good a pedigree as we could
have expected for our price range. Physically,
we're thrilled with her. She has an exceptional
shoulder, strong back, and is well balanced.
We hope that her hip will develop a bit more to
catch up with her shoulder, but overall she is an
attractive horse with potential.
We hope to sell her as a yearling, most likely
in the (Keeneland) September sale. Our break-
even point is about $26,000, so we'll be holding
our breaths until then. BH
