Flashy-looking Honor Code ran down a game Liam's Map Aug. 8 at Saratoga Race Course to win the grade I Whitney Stakes and put to rest doubts he

doesn't give his best around two turns. The 4-year-

old ridgling from the final crop of A.P. Indy duplicat-

Cavorting missed some time after a disappoint-ing effort in the Davona Dale Stakes (gr. II) in February, but she certainly has made up for it with

back-to-back victories—the latest one in the grade

I Longines Test Stakes for 3-year-old fillies Aug. 8 at

    Saratoga Race Course.

    Owned by Stonestreet Stables—which won

the grade I Vanderbilt with Rock Fall last week-

end—and trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, Cavorting

went from ninth early to first at the wire in a solid

1:22.81. Bar of Gold was second and By the Moon,

third. Cavorting, by Bernardini, was a $360,000

weanling purchase at Keeneland November in

    2012.

"She's back," Stonestreet owner Barbara Banke

said. "She sure likes Saratoga. She's happy here."

Cavorting last year won the grade II Adirondack

Stakes at Saratoga. In her June 5 return to the rac-

es, she won the Jersey Girl Stakes at Belmont Park.

McLaughlin acknowledged the importance of the

    Test victory.

"These grade I wins are important for fillies," he

said, "and she's a really nice filly." BH

years of decline. The crop held

fairly steady from 1993 to 2008

as it ranged from 31,884 to

    35,050 during the period, ac-

    cording to Jockey Club figures,

    but the national recession and

    other factors led to double-digit

    declines in 2010-11. Projections

for the 2014 and 2015 foal crops

    were both about 22,000; those

    numbers are estimated.

    "The projection for the 2016

foal crop is based on reports of

    mares bred received to date,

    and we estimate that approx-

    imately 80% of those reports

have been received (through Aug. 1)," said Matt

Iuliano, executive vice president and executive di-

rector for The Jockey Club. The organization releases

the projections in early August in conjunction with its

DENALI HAS LONE WAR FRONT PAIRBy Ian Tapp

Scanning the catalog for the Aug. 10-11

    Fasig-Tipton

    Saratoga sale,

    you'll find 10

yearlings by Tapit but only two by his commercial

rival War Front, both of which are in Craig and Holly

    Bandoroff's Denali Stud consignment.

"We're pleased to have the only two War Fronts in

the sale," Craig Bandoroff said. "The Gallagher's Stud

filly (Hip 104) is lovely and she's a New York-bred, so

it made sense to bring her here. The colt (Hip 205)

is really nice. His brother, Doctor Chit, was trained

by Pletcher, ran in New York, and was purchased by

Steve Young, so there's a New York connection there.

I was hoping he'd be the only War Front colt in the

sale, but we're taking a good horse."

Denali also has a Tapit colt—Hip 34 out of Ap-

pealing Zophie. "He is a hell of a horse, a really good

Tapit," Bandoroff said. "I have a good feeling about

our horses this year but, of course, it doesn't matter

    what I think anymore." BH

NY-BREDS TO TEST OPEN WATERSBy Tom LaMarra

More than 280 New York-bred yearlings are cat-aloged to sell in Saratoga Springs Aug. 15-16, but the consignors of almost 20 will test the waters

several days earlier at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select

yearling sale. Winter Quarter Farm of Kentucky has

two—Hip 30 by Speightstown and Hip 51 by Tapit —in

the open sale and four in the state-bred auction, and

farm manager Ferran Robinson said it's about "sire

power" when the choice of venue is made.

    "Being New York-breds

    and two fantastic-looking

    yearlings, we thought

    they had a better chance

to be (in the open sale),"

    Robinson said. "There

    definitely is more scru-

    tiny, but these two were

    perfect for the sale. There

    was no debate with these

    two. The real debate was

    whether to sell here or

    wait until Keeneland

    September."

    As for the four year-

lings cataloged for the New York-bred sale, Robinson

said: "All four are quite nice. It's a great expense (to

come from Kentucky), but we have a good track re-

cord here. The New York-bred sale has been so good

to us and our clients." BH

JANNEY ELECTED JOCKEY CLUB CHAIRMANBy Tom LaMarra

When The Jockey Club holds its annual Round Table Aug. 9 in

    Saratoga Springs, N.Y.,

    there will be a chang-

ing of the guard at the

    top of the organization.

    After a board of stewards

    meeting Aug. 8, it was

announced Stuart S. Janney III, who had served as

vice chairman since 2010, was elected chairman to

replace Ogden Mills "Dinny" Phipps, who earlier this

year announced he would resign from the post.

Phipps, who had served as chairman since early

1983, will be chairman emeritus and remain on the

board of stewards. Janney, a longtime Thoroughbred

owner and breeder, has been a member of The Jock-

ey Club since 1992 and has served as chairman of

    the organization's Thoroughbred Safety Committee.

William M. Lear Jr., a Keeneland trustee, will take

over as vice chairman of The Jockey Club, while Ian

Highet will remain secretary-treasurer. William S.

Farish Jr. was elected to the board of stewards to fill

the expired term of Breeders' Cup president Craig

    Fravel. BH

GONE ASTRAY, HIGH COTTON 2YOS WIN IN FLBy Frank Angst

The Florida Sire Stakes series, which has produced a number of Breeders' Cup starters over the years, offered its first races of 2015 on Aug. 8 at Gulfstream

Park, with Dream of Me and It's High Time securing

victories in the six-furlong stakes for juveniles.

Dream of Me (by High Cotton), under Eduardo

Nunez, surged past two rivals in the stretch to win

the Dr. Fager division for 2-year-olds by 2 1/4 lengths

while It's High Time (Gone Astray) scored an upset win

in the Desert Vixen division for 2-year-old fillies.

In the $200,000 Dr. Fager, Kathy Machesky's Dream

of Me secured the first stakes win of his career.

Trained by Anna Varsi, Dream of Me completed six

furlongs in 1:12.11 on a fast track.

    STALLION ANALYSIS

A CLOSER LOOK AT CURLINBy Ian Tapp

Even if you were a casual observer of Thor-oughbred headlines over the past few weeks, you could not have been able to escape the

newsworthiness of Lane's End stallion Curlin,

particularly at Saratoga Race Course, where his

progeny racked up four wins in the first three

    days of the meet.

Off the Tracks, a 2-year-old half sister to

grade II winner Concord Point, got it started in

the opening-day Schuylerville Stakes (gr. III).

Later on the July 24 card Bishop's Pond captured

a first-level turf allowance; then Pulling G's won

    the next race, a six-furlong allowance/optional

claimer. On July 26, Curalina's late rush was a

nose short in the Coaching Club American Oaks

(gr. I), but the Curlin karma was too good—the

stewards put up Curalina via DQ.

This Sunday at Saratoga, Curlin's Belmont

Stakes (gr. I) and Metropolitan Handicap (gr. I)

winner Palace Malice makes his first start since

May in the nine-furlong Alydar Stakes. Wheth-

er or not Palace Malice, now 5, can regain the

top-level form of his 3- and 4-year-old seasons,

the variety of Curlin's performers alone is fasci-

    nating.

"He's getting a wide range of different types

of horses that can do pretty much anything,"

said Bill Farish of Lane's End. "A lot of people

are picking up on that he's progressively getting

    better."

Siring a cross-section of aptitudes was also

characteristic of Curlin's sire Smart Strike, a

son of Mr. Prospector who stood at Lane's End

until his death in March. Lane's End director of

stallion seasons Chance Timm said it often takes

a significant milestone to prove that a stallion is

    for real.

"If you go back to that day (Sept. 30, 2007)

when Smart Strike had three grade I winners

(Fabulous Strike, English Channel, and Curlin),

that was when everybody finally realized what

kind of a horse he was," Timm said. "If anything,

I think breeders are more in-front of Curlin's

progress than they were with Smart Strike.

They're recognizing earlier that he's doing the

    same sort of thing."

Timm said Curlin is an interesting horse

from a pedigree perspective in that "not a lot of

mares get in the way with what he's got going

on. He's doing some really different sort of

things—Off the Tracks is inbred to Vice Regent,

for example. But he likes inbreeding to Deputy

Minster, the A.P. Indy line, and inbreeding to

Northern Dancer is a big play with him."

Curlin stood the 2015 season for a $35,000

fee. Asked whether that fee will increase for

2016, Farish said, "More than likely, yes. He was

very busy last year, and he's having an even

better year so far this year. We'll discuss with

(majority owner) Barbara Banke and the Ston-

estreet team, but he may have to take a jump to

    curb some demand." BH
