FOR CLASSIC, 'B GAME' WON'T CUT ITBy Tom LaMarra

Trainers of some of the top contenders for the

Oct. 31 Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) said their

horses are coming into the race in fine form, but

they aren't taking anything for granted. In other

words, a horse will need its "A game" and nothing

less.

"I think it's going to be very competitive," said

Bob Baffert, who trains Triple Crown winner Amer-

ican Pharoah. "You can't come with a 'B' race. I'm

confident I have him at a level he'll run a big race."

Dale Romans, trainer of Travers Stakes (gr. I)

Keen Ice, said the colt has turned a corner: "He has

become mentally more aggressive. I see no signs

of him backing off." And Kiaran McLaughlin, Frost-

ed's conditioner, said he's "getting better each day

as he trains."

As for Beholder, trainer Richard Mandella said

the mare has recovered from a slight tempera-

ture and will gallop Oct. 22. The Classic, he said,

remains the target for the two-time Eclipse Award

winner. BH

LATEST HEADLINES FROM BLOODHORSE.COMBEHOLDER ALERT, 'BACK IN THE GAME' After being treated with antibiotics the 5-year-old racemare was bright and alert with her temperature back to normal again. She will train Oct. 22 at Keeneland around 7:30 a.m.

BREEDERS' CUP ANNOUNCES ORDER OF RACES The Breeders' Cup has announced the official order of races, and guaranteed multi-race wagering pools, for the 2015 Breeders' Cup World Championships Oct. 30-31 at Keeneland.

GOLDEN HORN LEADS STRONG EURO BC CONTINGENT Twenty-four runners will be shipping directly from Europe for the Breeders' Cup World Championships.

RUNHAPPY ZIPS SIX FURLONGS AT KEENELAND James McIngvale's grade I winner Runhappy continued to show his affinity for the main track at Keeneland Oct. 21, zipping six furlongs in 1:09 4/5 in preparation for the Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I).

BRADLEY CHASES BC FILLY & MARE TURF DOUBLE Bloodstock agent Pete Bradley, who co-owned 2014 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (gr. IT) winner Dayatthespa, is back this year in the same race with Chilean champion Dacita and veteran Watsdachances.

SHEER DRAMA RECORDS FINAL BC DISTAFF BREEZE Harold Queen's multiple grade I winner Sheer Drama breezed five furlongs over Gulfstream Park's main track Oct. 21, her final work for the $2 million Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) at Keeneland.

FIORETTI BREEZES AT THOROUGHBRED CENTER Two Hearts Farm and Don Janes' Fioretti, winner of Keeneland's Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes (gr. II) on Oct. 3 in her most recent start, worked five furlongs Oct. 21 at The Thoroughbred Center north of Lexington.

DORTMUND MAKES RETURN IN BIG BEAR Kaleem Shah's two-time grade I winner Dortmund is scheduled to make his first start since his Triple Crown bid in the $70,000 Big Bear Stakes Oct. 24 at Santa Anita Park.

COLT BY THE FACTOR TOPS F-T DAY 3By Glenye Cain Oakford

A $290,000 colt by first-crop yearling sire The Factor

topped the Fasig-Tipton October sale's third of

four sessions Oct. 21, which ended with 213 yearlings

selling for $6,727,700. The average was $31,585 and

the median $15,000.

Compared with cumulative totals from last year's

shorter three-day sale, Wednesday's session average

was down 12% and median down 19%.

Ciaran Dunne, representing Altimira Racing,

signed for the session-topper, who was consigned

by Paramount Sales. "There is a chance he'll go to a

2-year-old sale, but more than likely he'll go straight

to the races in California," he said.

"That was a continuation of a very similar market-

place that we've seen the first two days of the sale:

lots of competition for what are perceived to be the

better-quality offerings," Fasig-Tipton president Boyd

Browning said. "It's not easy selling a horse that's not

perceived to be of a certain value."

The 2015 auction's first three days have sold 639

horses for $21,566,700 for a $33,751 average price

and a $15,000 median. Cumulative buy-backs stand

at 32%. BH

TONALIST THE SURVIVOR OF 2014 CLASSICBy Frank Angst

The top six finishers from last year's Breeders' Cup

Classic (gr. I) returned to racing this season, but

only fifth-place Tonalist is among the pre-entries for

this year's Classic.

Last year's Classic winner, Kaleem Shah's Bayern,

may have been the most puzzling horse in 2015, hav-

ing failed to register a victory in five starts. He ended

his racing career with a third-place finish in the Sept.

26 Awesome Again Stakes (gr. I) at Santa Anita Park.

Injury accounted for most of the 2015 4-year-olds

who failed to make it back to the Classic, including

group II winner Toast of New York and Horse of the

Year California Chrome—both of whom are expected

back in 2016. Shared Belief, who won this year's San-

ta Anita Handicap (gr. I) in dominating fashion before

fracturing a hip in the Charles Town Classic (gr. II),

has returned to light training.

F-T OCTOBER HIPS TO WATCH: SESSION 4By Madison Scott

The Oct. 22 final session of Fasig-Tipton October

appears to be the strongest on paper, featur-

ing five expensive buy-backs from the Keeneland

September yearling sale.

Hip 1237 is a War Front colt out of Viva La Flag,

a half sister to Parading from Personal Ensign's

family. Eaton Sales consigns the colt, who was

bought back $235,000 RNA. The only other War

Front cataloged is Hip 1339, out of Smart Strike

mare Along and a $95,000 September buy-back.

Consigned by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, the colt's

third dam is Urban Sea.

The lone Tapit in the sale is Brookdale Sales' Hip

1363, a colt out of stakes winner Apple Charlotte

that was a $340,000 September RNA.

Hips 1336 and 1481 were pricey weanling acqui-

sitions at Keeneland November. Hip 1336, a Speight-

stown filly out of multiple grade I stakes-placed All

Due Respect that was bought for $230,000 and then

RNA'd for $260,000 last month at Keeneland. Hip

1481, a colt by Union Rags, was a $290,000 weanling

and a $320,000 buy-back in September. BH

HIGHLAND REEL FAVORED IN COX PLATEBy Tara Madgwick

Australian-bred stayer Mongolian Khan (Holy

Roman Emperor) scored a popular victory Oct.

17 as favorite in the group I Caulfield Cup, and now

attention turns to the $3 million WS Cox Plate (Aus-I)

at Moonee Valley this weekend. The Cox Plate (2,040

meters) is seen as Australia's best race for mid-

dle-distance horses.

Four of the past five winners now stand at ma-

jor farms: So You Think and Adelaide at Coolmore,

Shamus Award at Widden Stud, and Ocean Park at

Waikato Stud in New Zealand.

A full field of 14 will run, including Europe-

an-trained entries Arod, Gailo Chop, and Highland

Reel, who races for Coolmore and will start favorite.

Highland Reel has a similar profile to Adelaide,

Coolmore's winner last year. Both are Galileo colts

who won the Secretariat Stakes (gr. IT) at Arlington

International earlier in their 3-year-old seasons.

Local hopes focus on the Chris Waller-trained

trio—Kermadec (Teofilo), Preferment (Zabeel), and

Winx (Street Cry)—as well as $6 million earner Criteri-

on (Sebring). BH

THROWBACK: TOUSSAUD WINS AT SANTA ANITABy Tom Hall

When Juddmonte Farms' Toussaud won the Oct. 6,

1993, running, the Senator Ken Maddy Stakes (gr.

IIIT)—to be run this year Oct. 25—was ungraded and

not even called the Ken Maddy; the listed stakes run at

6 1/2 furlongs on the downhill turf course at Santa Anita

was known as the Autumn Days Handicap.

The homebred 4-year-old El Gran Senor filly used

the race to launch a fall campaign after taking the grade

I Gamely Handicap in May. It was the final win of a ca-

reer that added $551,536 to the Juddmonte coffers.

Retired to the Juddmonte broodmare ranks, Tous-

saud was so blue a hen that she earned Kentucky

Broodmare of the Year honors in 2002. Five of her

first six foals were graded stakes winners (four grade I

winners). While her progeny earned $5.9 million racing,

her four sire sons have amassed more than $98 million

in progeny earnings, led by recently repatriated Empire

Maker and Chester House who sired 13% stakes win-

ners from foals before his untimely death. BH

LONHRO COLT SHINES AT 2YO SALEBy Sarah Whitelaw

Australian-breds dominated proceedings at

CTS' Johannesburg Ready To Run sale Oct. 18.

Five of the top six lots sold, including the two joint

sale-toppers, were bred in Australia.

Two juveniles brought R2 million ($150,319)

apiece to top the sale—a Lonhro colt consigned by

Summerhill and a Myboycharlie filly from Balmoral

Stud's draft.

Mayfair Speculators, the sale's leading buyers,

purchased the Lonhro colt while Brian Burnard

bought the sale-topping filly. A son of Captain Al

sold for R1.4 million ($105,212) to top locally bred

lots.

Of the 199 2-year-olds sold (50 more than

in 2014), 160 sold for a gross of R36.065 mil-

lion ($2,711,124). The sale's average, R225,406

INDUSTRYANALYSIS

A LOOK AHEAD FOR BREEDERS' CUP

Though Breeders' Cup has been busy wrap-

ping up the bulk of preparations for its first

World Championships in Central Kentucky, of-

ficials clearly are looking beyond the Oct. 30-31

event at Keeneland.

Breeders' Cup traditionally has attempted

to identify host sites years in advance, though

the timetable has fluctuated greatly. The last

exercise, however, was productive; in June 2014

the organization issued a three-year schedule:

Keeneland this year, followed by Santa Anita

Park in 2016, and Del Mar—also a first-time

host—in 2017.

"Hopefully once we see the results of this

year's event, it will give us more relevant data

on decisions for 2018, 2019, and maybe even

2020," Breeders' Cup president Craig Fravel

said. "The question is how far out the board

of directors is willing to make a commit-

ment. I think in the first quarter of next year

we'll know about 2018, and maybe 2019."

The World Championships was held in

California at Santa Anita from 2012-14, and

at Churchill Downs in Kentucky in 2010-11.

Cup officials have said the top five most

successful Breeders' Cups from a revenue

standpoint have been held in Louisville, Ky.

However, the relationship between Church-

ill and Breeders' Cup has had its ups and

downs.

"Certainly Churchill has been putting out

an effort to be welcoming to Breeders' Cup

and the racing industry overall," Fravel said.

"They've spent a lot of money on capital im-

provements—I don't think it gets the credit

it should get for that. At this point no one is

off the table (as a future host site)."

Fravel noted this year's event in Lexington

has opened some eyes from a community in-

volvement standpoint. The Lexington business

community has rallied around the Breeders'

Cup, as has the Thoroughbred breeding indus-

try.

"I think sometimes people need an excuse to

get energized," Fravel said. "That was part of the

thought process. (In Lexington) the community

doesn't need to be educated about horse racing;

there's a built-in interest level. The hope was to

develop a broader template for future Breeders'

Cups. That's not to say we haven't had support

in Los Angeles or Louisville, but (community

involvement) has been moved up to a different

level here."

Fravel said there could be similar results at

Del Mar, where horse racing is a focal point for

the local community. "I do think this year will

give us a jump-start on that," he said. BH
