tionally pleasant morning. "It is good to see such a nice cross-section of people."

Despite declines in 2016 yearling sales to date, Russell said he is optimistic that Keeneland will con-tinue an upward trajectory that the September sale has taken in past years as the market recovers from global recession. Since 2009, when 3,159 yearlings averaged $66,850, the sale has steadily improved. In 2015, 2,745 head changed hands for an average price of $113,082.

Through Labor Day, horses that went through the sales ring in September had won 141 stakes globally, including 38 grade/group I wins, with graded suc-cesses not only in North America but Australia, Bra-zil, Denmark, Dubai, England, France, Ireland, Korea, Kazakhstan, Panama, Russia, and Puerto Rico.

"Our graduates have outdone themselves on the racetrack this year," Russell said.

"I've seen enough new people that I am encour-aged; we're seeing some new faces," said Wayne Sweazey, who consigns under the Timber Town banner. "The people who are 'well-to-do' are here

and they seem interested, so I think it's going to hold steady. It's a great place to market a horse, as was the (Fasig-Tipton) Saratoga sale."

Brian Graves, public sales director for Gainesway, said activity by potential buyers for horses consigned in Book 1—the creme de la creme among the sale's offerings based on sire power and strength of female families—has been about the same as in years past.

But that is not unusual, considering there are only a select number of buyers with pocketbooks deep enough to buy the Book 1 bluebloods. "Book 1 and Saratoga are the best that Central Kentucky breeders have to offer. I would expect it to be very good," he said.

Graves said the September sale will likely be a continuation of the trend in which quality is in great demand, with lesser competition for horses in the middle to lower price ranges.

Craig Bandoroff of Denali Stud said he has seen some buyers he had not seen at the U.S. sales re-cently.

"There are some Europeans I have not seen in a long time and that is nice to see," he said. BH

SALES UPDATE

KEENELAND SEPTEMBER BOOK 1 PROVIDES CHALLENGEBy Ron Mitchell

With many siblings and half siblings to top-class runners and yearlings sired by the world's

leading stallions, winnowing down the list of top horses to watch that could light up the Keeneland September sale bid board is a daunting task.

A good starting point is offspring of leading sires. Tapit has 53 cataloged throughout the sale, War Front has 33, and Medaglia d'Oro has 57, among others.

"We have five or six Tapits that are nice horses that could really do well," said Duncan Taylor of Tay-lor Made Sales Agency. "Those (Tapit yearlings) are all horses that before you go look at them you could say 'that could be a million dollar horse,' because at this point he is not breeding to bad mares. They are all top mares."

Chief among the Tapit offerings on Day 1, Sept. 12, are Hips 22 and 161. Consigned by Mill Ridge Sales, agent, Hip 22 is out of the stakes-winning Wild Again mare Shop Again, dam of grade I winner Power Bro-ker. The bay filly was bred in Kentucky by Jamm.

Hip 161 is a colt out of the unraced Thunder Gulch mare Alittlebitearly, dam of Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) and William H. Haskell Invitational (gr. I) winner Bayern. Bred in Kentucky by Helen C. Alexan-der, Stuart E. Huston, and Gainesway Management, and consigned by Gainesway, the gray or roan colt is from the female family of champion Althea.

Medaglia d'Oro yearlings selling Sept. 12 include Hips 48 and 141. Hip 48 is a colt bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings and consigned by Taylor Made. The colt is out of Smart Strike's stakes-winning daughter Spring Party, a half sister to grade I winner Emcee and to the dam of grade I winner Constitution.

From the consignment of Craig and Holly Ban-doroff's Denali Stud, Hip 141 is a bay filly whose dam is the German stakes-winning and group I-placed mare Wild Wind. The filly was bred in Kentucky by Three Chimneys.

The dam of Hip 191, a Giant's Causeway colt con-signed by Valkyre Stud on behalf of Kentucky breed-

er Oakbrook Farm, takes up an entire catalog page. The May 18 foal is out of Cryptoclearance's graded stakes-placed mare Ava Knowsthecode. Among the yearling's half siblings are grade I winner and million-aire Justin Phillip, grade I winner Greenpointcrusad-er, grade II winner and sire Keyed Entry, and grade III winners Algorithms and Successful Mission.

Another with a star-producing dam is Hip 99, an Awesome Again filly from Taylor Made. Bred in Kentucky by Diamond A Racing, she is a half sister to millionaire Paynter, the winner of the Haskell Invitational (gr. I). She is out of Tizso, a full sister to leading sire Tiznow and grade II winners Budroyale and Tizdubai.

Hip 78, a top War Front yearling, who has been named Rumors of War is part of the Lane's End con-signment. Three-time grade I winner Sweet Lulu was purchased by breeder Summer Wind Farm for $3 million at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November sale while carrying the colt in utero. BH

flank and Enola Gray looming three wide as the opening quarter went in 22.36 and the half in :45.17. The gray Grazen filly was able to pass Everqueen in the stretch, but never seriously threatened the winner, who hit the wire 2 1/4 lengths on top in 1:08.84.

BENDABLE SNAPS ENOLA GRAY'S WINNING RECORDBy Jeremy Balan

Claiborne Farm's Bendable, off the first loss of her career, handed Enola Gray her first defeat

Sept. 11 in the $75,000 Beverly J. Lewis Stakes at Los Alamitos Race Course.

Bendable, a 3-year-old Horse Gree-ley filly trained by Richard Mandella, popped out of the gate under first-time jockey Mike Smith and held an early lead, but that didn't last all that long.

About an eighth of a mile into the six-furlong test, the rest of the five-filly field formed a line in the backstretch, all vying for the lead. Enola Gray, who came into the race with an undefeat-ed record in three starts, broke a step slow and found herself four wide in the line.

In the turn, however, Smith and Bendable regained command, with longshot Everqueen on her outside

Bendable won her first two races at Santa Anita Park—a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight June 3 by 3 3/4 lengths and a six-furlong allowance by 2 1/4 lengths July 1—but came in second July 27 at Del Mar in another allowance. She now has $127,000 in earnings and paid $9 and $2.40 as the 7-2 second choice. Enola Gray, off at 1-5, paid $2.10 to place. No show wagering was offered. BH

"I was kinda drifting out to make sure my mare saw (Enola Gray), which is more important than me seeing her," Smith said. "She locked on and I gave her a couple with the right hand to keep her straight.... She jumped really well (out of the gate) and my handler in the gate really set her up well, so she caught a flier out of there."

Enola Gray—who won the Fleet Treat Stakes last time out at Del Mar July 22 but was scratched from the Torrey Pines (gr. III) Aug. 28 with a cough after training the day prior—finished 3 1/4 lengths clear of Everqueen. Sunday's race was Enola Gray's first in open company.

"She broke a little bit slow and she made a nice move around the turn, but we got beat," said trainer Phil D'Amato. "(Jockey Tyler Baze) thought we were going to run (Bendable) down in the lane, but that's a nice filly. She is close to being unde-feated, so if we find her next time, we won't give her the two lengths."

SALES UPDATE

CONSIGNORS HIGH ON ANIMAL KINGDOM YEARLINGSBy Eric Mitchell

Twenty-nine first-crop yearling sires, with three or more cataloged, will be represent-

ed over the next 13 days at the Keeneland September yearling sale.

A handful have already been identified by the market as sires to watch, including 2011 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Animal Kingdom. His four year-lings sold so far have averaged $147,500.

The striking chestnut son of Leroidesani-maux—Dalicia, by Acatenango, has nine yearlings cataloged for Book 1 of the Keeneland sale that starts Sept. 12. He has 63 cataloged for the entire sale.

Some of the first Animal Kingdom yearlings through the ring are tall and scopey with long strides and good minds, according to the con-signors offering them.

Jack Jones Jr.'s Mineola Farm will offer the first Animal Kingdom yearling as Hip 19. The excep-tionally tall March colt is out of the English stakes winner Shady Reflection, the dam of Las Vegas Marathon Stakes (gr. II) winner Cary Street. Jones bred the colt.

"The mare is average-size but everything she throws is big," Jones said. "It is an all-European pedigree but that is the emphasis of most of my pedigrees.

"This colt," he continued, "is strong willed. He does what he wants, or at least tries. He's never mean about it, but he's a handful."

While Animal Kingdom, who stands at Darley, won the Derby in his first start on dirt, he does have a primarily turf pedigree and his other grade I win came in the Dubai World Cup Spon-sored by Emirates Airline when Meydan still had a synthetic main track. Horses that excel on turf have shown an affinity for the synthetic surfaces as well.

Few consignors expressed any concerns about

the emphasis on turf."A good horse of any kind will be rewarded,"

said Andrew Cary with Select Sales, which has Hip 325, an Animal Kingdom filly who was bred by Carrie and Craig Brogden's Machmer Hall. The filly is a half sister to Drefong, who won the King's Bishop Stakes (gr. I) Aug. 27 in his first stakes start.

"Turf racing is getting more popular in the U.S. all the time; it has definitely changed over the past 10 years," he said. "Buyers really just want quality."

Catherine Parke with Valkyre Stud offers an Animal Kingdom filly (Hip 23) on opening day. She bred the filly out of her graded stakes-pro-ducing mare Silk N' Sapphire, the dam of 2010 Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT) winner Shared Account. While Parke wishes the Keeneland September yearling had a couple more months of maturity behind her, she said the filly displays all the class and quality of another Animal Kingdom yearling she has.

"She needs time to mature but there is a lot of quality; she's graceful and correct," Parke said. "Both of the Animal Kingdoms have good brains, a wonderful mentality. They are very calm and very intelligent. Whether it is walking at the sales or whatever you are asking them to do, these horses keep going. I noticed that in all the good horses I've had; they dig down and don't quit." BH

MAKER, GEROUX SWEEP KENTUCKY DOWNS STAKESBy Jeremy Balan

Trainer Mike Maker and jockey Florent Geroux swept the stakes events Sept. 11 at Kentucky

Downs, and did so impressively.Out Of This World Racing's Try Your Luck kicked

off the double with a 7 1/2-length victory in the $200,000 Dueling Grounds Oaks, then stablemate Oscar Nominated, owned by Ken and Sarah Ramsey, drew off to win the $350,000 Exacta Systems Dueling Grounds Derby by 6 1/4 lengths.

Both were 3-1 and the second choice in large fields, but pulled away as if they were odds-on under Ger-oux, who won five races on the nine-race Sunday card.

Oscar Nominated, a son of Kitten's Joy who last visited the winner's circle in April, when he took the Spiral Stakes (gr. III) at Turfway Park, bobbled at the start of the 1 5/16-mile Derby, raced in sixth early as Little Scotty set the pace through a half-mile in :50.96 and six furlongs in 1:14.96, moved up four wide in the final turn to take command turning for home, and left the rest of the field in his wake.

West Coast shipper Path of David closed well from eighth to finish second, three-quarters of a length

ahead of Cordon."Super. Very impressive," Maker said of Os-

car Nominated's win. "He’s been facing the best. I thought the competition was a little lighter than he's been up against. (I'm) proud of his performance."

Try Your Luck, a Lookin At Lucky filly who crossed the wire first but was disqualified to third last time out Aug. 13 in the Pucker Up (gr. IIIT) at Arlington International Racecourse, was up closer to the pace than her stablemate but employed essentially the same tactics. She raced two to three lengths off pace-setter Celestial Insight early on, opened up a clear lead at the top of the stretch, and cruised to a clear victory. Favored Taralena came in second, a half-length ahead of Leafy Shade.

"Both of them were forwardly placed and had a nice stalking trip from the outside," Geroux said. "Both of the horses just really liked the track and ran away. Very similar."

It was the first stakes win for Try Your Luck, who pushed her earnings to $225,174. Oscar Nominated brought home his third stakes score and now has earned $628,095.

The wins came on the heels of a big Saturday for Maker and Geroux, who took the $600,000 Calumet Farm Kentucky Turf Cup (gr. IIIT) with Da Big Hoss. BH

WICKLOW BRAVE OVERCOMES IN IRISH ST. LEGERBy Jeremy Balan

A slow start only hampered Wicklow Brave for a moment Sept. 11 at the Curragh in the Palmers-

town House Estate Irish St. Leger (Ire-I).Jockey Frankie Dettori and the Beat Hollow gelding

shrugged off the slow beginning and moved to the front from the inside post in the Irish classic, never relenting in a half-length victory over defending St. Leger winner and heavy betting favorite Order Of St George.

Trained by Willie Mullins for Wicklow Bloodstock, Wicklow Brave even caught his jockey by surprise with the upset in the four-horse field.

"I didn't expect that, honestly," Dettori said. "He was very brave and Willie gave me free rein, and said 'If you want to go to the front and do your stuff, work away.' I was quite surprised that I didn't hear anybody coming until about a furlong to go and we ground it out in the end.

"It was a surprise, but a Classic win is always great. Willie is a top man. His horses are always in good nick

and we tried something different and it worked out. It was always the plan, to set the fractions, in a small field like that."

Jockey Ryan Moore and the Aiden O'Brien-trained Order Of St George raced near the back of the pack for most of the 1 3/4-mile trek and challenged late in the stretch, but just could not get past the winner.

Moore and O'Brien did find victory a race earlier, however, when Churchill routed a field of six other entrants in the seven-furlong Goffs Vincent O'Brien National Stakes (Ire-I) for 2-year-olds by 4 1/4 lengths.

"He's a very exciting colt," Moore said of the son of Galileo. "He's done nothing wrong his whole life and I'm sure there'll be plenty more to come from him in the future."

Earlier in the card, longshot Intricately gave Joseph O'Brien, the son of Aiden O'Brien, his first group I victory as a trainer in the Moyglare Stud Stakes (Ire-I). Donnacha O'Brien, another son of Aidan, rode the winning Fastnet Rock filly for his brother.

"It's unbelievable," Joseph O'Brien said. "She's very tough. She's been running well all year and Donna-cha gave her an unbelievable ride today.

"This means the world to me. It's Donnacha's first group I and my mum bred her. She's very tough and Donnacha was very strong on her." BH

LEFT HAND, VADAMOS SCORE BIG AT CHANTILLYBy Jeremy Balan

Wertheimer and Frere's Left Hand and Haras de Saint Pair's Vadamos both broke through for

their first top-level victories Sept. 11 at Chantilly. The homebreds took group I races on the eight-

race slate at the French racetrack Sunday.Left Hand, a 3-year-old Dubawi filly, struck first in

the Qatar Prix Vermeille (Fr-I). Racing in fourth and looking for running room with 400 meters to go in the 2,400-meter (about 1 1/2 miles) test, Left Hand found a clear path on the outside under jockey Max-ime Guyon and had just enough to catch Godolphin's Endless Time in the final strides to win by a half-length. The Juliet Rose was another three-quarters of a length back in third.

Trained by Carlos Laffon-Parias, Left Hand won the Prix de Psyche Morocco Cup By Sorec (Fr-III) at Deauville last time out July 30, but competed well at

the top level before that, coming in second in the Prix de Diane Longines (Fr-I) June 19 at Chantilly. The Prix Vermeille was her third victory from seven starts.

One race later, Vadamos stalked early leader Zarzak, took command turning for home, and held off a late drive from M & M Racing's Spectre to win by 1 1/4 lengths in the 1,600-meter (about a mile) Qatar Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (Fr-I) under jockey Vincent Cheminaud.

The 5-year-old Monsun horse was knocking on the door last time out with a second-place finish in the Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard-Jacques Le Mar-ois (Fr-I), and previously won the Prix Messidor (Fr-III) at Maisons-Laffitte in July and the Prix du Muguet (Fr-II) in May at Saint Cloud for trainer Andre Fabre.

Also Sunday at Chantilly, Japanese-based Makahiki won the Qatar Prix Niel (Fr-II) as the heavy favorite, Silverwave took the Prix Foy (Fr-II), Just Glamorous scored in the Qatar Prix du Petit Couvert (Fr-III), and Vazirabad was victorious in the Qatar Prix Gladiateur (Fr-III). BH

SUPER JOCKEY MAKES KOREA SPRINT HISTORYBy Blood-Horse Staff

Super Jockey secured a pioneering victory in the Keeneland Korea Sprint (Kor-I) Sept. 11 at Seoul

Racecourse.Hong Kong's first horse to race on South Korean

soil also became the first to win as he took the inau-gural edition of the $700,000 race that covered 1,200 meters (about six furlongs), the first of two contests open to overseas competitors at the new Korea Au-tumn Racing Carnival.

The gelding's trainer, Tony Millard, stressed the amount of planning that went into getting the horse prepared for the Sprint.

"Going into this sprint, a lot of things went right and we had a good feeling about it," the South Afri-can said. "The team worked really well, because we had to prepare the horse in the off-season, which is not easy, especially as he's a horse that doesn't sweat. That's quite a big call in Hong Kong's summer humidity.

"The race panned out exactly the way we planned, which doesn't often happen. He runs very well fresh. We know that and I was very happy with his prepara-tion coming into this. It was great. I didn't actually ex-pect him to win that well, but he's a high-class horse."

Super Jockey broke smartly from post 2 and, once out of the sand-churning slipstream of the pace setter Perdido Pomeroy, the Sandtrap gelding had plenty of run under jockey Karis Teetan.

"The leader came around me pretty quickly out of the barrier and I didn't want to sit behind him. I wanted to get my horse out and once I really got him out of the kickback and gave him a clear run, he really started pulling me through, and I didn't want to pull him

back to break his action," Teetan said.Super Jockey ran around the turn beside the pace-

setter, but a flick of the reins with 350 meters to race took Hong Kong's hope into a clear lead.

"Once we turned into the home straight he changed (leads) and really let down," Teetan said.

Teetan allowed his mount to coast home through the final 100 meters to win by four lengths.

"Like Mr. Millard said, ride just like it's a trial, because that's how he likes it," Teetan said. "In all his trials back home he really trials well when you allow him to do what he wants. He handled the (sand) sur-face pretty well and he ran a very good race. He had a lot in the tank still."

The win was Super Jockey's fifth out of 23 starts and his first win outside Hong Kong since his run-ner-up finish in the 2015 Dubai Golden Shaheen (UAE-I) and import to Hong Kong from New Zealand.

"Karis eased him down, which was lovely. We live to race another day," Millard said. "We'll go back to Hong Kong and decide there, where we'll aim for next."

The Peter Wolsley-trained Macheon Bolt took sec-ond for Korea with Japan's Grape Brandy in third.

Japan dominated the day's other feature, the group I Keeneland Korea Cup at 1,800 meters (about 1 1/8 miles), with the Kanichiro Fujii-ridden Chrysolite drawing clear from Kurino Star O to land the prize. Triple Nine was a long way back for third. BH

FIRST BLACK-TYPE WINNER FOR SIGNATURE REDBy Mary Reeder

Signature Spring rallied smartly from off the pace to bring his career record to 2-for-2 while also

becoming the first black-type winner for freshman sire Signature Red in the $144,000 Colin Stakes Sept. 11 at Woodbine.

Bred and owned by Howard Walton's Norse-man Racing Stable, Signature Spring was also the first winner for his sire when he aced his debut at six furlongs at Woodbine Aug. 20. He is out of the stakes-placed Outflanker mare Springledge.

Signature Spring proved the best in the closing stages, prevailing by 1 1/4 lengths in a final time of 1:10.48. King of the Court, last through much of the Colin, rallied on the outside for third, just 3/4 lengths shy of second-place finisher Junket.

Signature Spring was the sixth stakes winner of the meeting for trainer Sid Attard and the seventh for jockey Rafeal Hernandez.

"(Signature Spring) showed me something good the last couple of works. He really finished strong," Attard said.

Raced exclusively at Woodbine, Signature Red was a two time winner of the grade II Highland-er Stakes on turf. The son of Bernstein retired with a record of 6-6-7 from 27 starts and earned $630,232.

The 10-year-old stallion stands in Ontario at Colebrook Farms Stallion Station. His 2016 fee was $2,500. BH

HOPING FOR FLAT IN SEPTEMBERBy Eric Mitchell

The Thoroughbred business thrives on optimism; the potential that surrounds the next foal, the

next yearling, the next 2-year-old, or the next stallion. The first half of the yearling auction season has

produced results, however, that have challenged even the most ardent optimists. A polarized market was expected, with the greatest demand on yearlings perceived as the elite by pedigree and conformation.

Soliciting enough buyers for the middle and lower segments of the market has always been demanding, but some slippage at the upper end of earlier sales this year, combined with deep losses in the middle to lower tiers, are sobering signs head-ing into the Keeneland September yearling sale that starts Sept. 12.

In order to understand the dynamics of the market so far this year, BloodHorse MarketWatch

compiled the results for all yearling sales for which-BloodHorse has complete results for 2015 and 2016.

The results for 10 sales on both coasts and in the Midwest were used. The horses sold for each year were divided into deciles, which for 2016 represent-ed 144 yearlings for each 10% segment of the mar-ket. For 2015, each 10% represented 145 yearlings.

Despite focus on the top of the market, the top two deciles showed overall declines in both average and median compared with a year ago. The decile that fared best was the second-highest, showing a modest 3.7% decline in average and a 7.7% decline

in median price. The yearlings in this decile ranged in price from $180,000 to $80,000. The top 10% of the market saw declines collectively of 5.9% in average and 13.3% in median.

An interesting dynamic occurred with the price range of the top decile. The highest price in this decile dropped to $1.45 million from $2 million, but the lower end of the range increased to $185,000 from $175,000. A couple factors may be driving this compression in price. For one, high-end buyers have been making more joint purchases rather than bidding head-to-head. This has depressed the number of sky-high purchases. Also, the continuing rise in book size among the most desirable stallions could be depressing prices at the highest end while bolstering prices in the next highest tier. The high price of the second-highest decile rose to $185,000 from $175,000.

With more yearlings on the market, econom-ics professor Dr. Bob Losey has seen increased demand for the "close substitute" of a sire's best progeny. Buyers know they can't afford the best of the best, so they focus on the next-best. Losey will discuss effects of the "Big Book Phenomena" more in the days ahead.

As the deciles progress through the middle to low end of the markets, the declines rise sub-stantially. No surprises there. What this breakout illustrates is an overall weakness in the market to date and further evidence that a flat market by end of selling at Keeneland September would neverthe-less be a good market. BH
