The VII G20 Leaders Summit
Concludes Successfully
The G20 Leaders Summit, one of the most
important multilateral events which Mexico
has hosted in its history, reached a successful
conclusion on June 19.
At the event's conclusion, President Felipe
Calderón thanked the members, the guest
countries, and the leaders of international
organizations which had participated and con-
tributed to the success of the Leaders' Summit.
President Calderón also acknowledged the
work of academics, business people, unions
and youths who, in multiple parallel forums
such as the L20, Y20 and B20, worked for
months in order to deliver recommendations
and seek commitments from the participants
of the G20. President Calderón confirmed that
the VII Leaders Summit was characterized
both as being opened and inclusive, and as
having worked closely with diverse social
sectors and organizations, whose opinions and
recommendations were taken into account at
the Los Cabos meeting.
Among the most relevant points agreed upon
at the Summit were:
• A Growth and Jobs Action Plan. This plan
establishes commitments to respond to the
Euro Area situation, to strengthen demand,
support economic growth and foster financial
stability. To achieve these goals, an innovative
Accountability Assessment Framework was
initiated, which sets out the procedures for
reporting on progress in implementing com-
mitments.
• An increase of over 450 billion dollars in
resources for the International Monetary Fund
(IMF). This constitutes the largest investment
in the history of the Fund, which will be able
to increase its capacity to provide support and
loans to prevent and resolve economic crises.
• The adoption of measures to maintain a sup-
portive business environment. These measures
entail the rejection of protectionism since it is
in the interest of all members of the G20 to
prevent escalating protectionist measures from
bringing about a
new recession.
• Progress in
strengthening
the regulatory
f r a m e w o r k
which supports
financial sys-
tems. Steps
were taken in
the creation of
an institutional
framework, for which the Financial Stability
Board (FSB) will be created, with new statutes
which strengthen its operational capacity and
governance.
• With regards to financial inclusion, agree-
ments were reached concerning the Global
Partnership for Financial Inclusion (GPFI),
which will monitor progress in extending
financial services to populations with fe-
wer resources.
• With respect to food security, the G20
agreed to promote greater public and priva-
te investment in order to stimulate agricul-
ture, develop technology and increase pro-
ductivity in that sector.

Latin American Writers' Conference at the Luminato Festival
On June 12, the prestigious art and
cultural festival Luminato presented
three Latin American writers: Mexi-
can Valeria Luiselli, Peruvian Santi-
ago Roncagliolo, and Bolivian Rod-
rigo Habún. The writers discussed
the boundaries between writing and
politics, among other topics.
Consul General Mauricio Tous-
saint attended the event.
After the conference, which was
held in the TIFF building, Consul
Toussaint spoke with Jorn Weis-
brodt, the Festival's artistic director
and an enthusiast of Mexican cul-
tures and art.
Jorn Weisbrodt expressed his in-
terest in developing a larger Mexi-
can presence at the festival in the
future.
The Luminato Festival was held in
Toronto from June 8-17.
In just five years, the quality of its
programming in a range of artistic
disciplines has established Luminato
as an international-calibre festival.
The first Business Seminar on Creative In-
dustries in Mexico was held on June 27 at the
Ontario Investment and Trade Centre in To-
ronto. The event was organized by ProMex-
ico's Toronto office and the Consulate Gen-
eral.
The seminar drew 33 representatives from
institutes and organizations involved in the
Canadian film industry; the Ontario govern-
ment; as well as universities with departments
in related fields such as animation, special
effects, engineering, video games, etc.
In his inaugural speech, the Consul General
Mauricio Toussaint stressed that Mexico is
one of the best places to do business due to its
economic stability, which entails legal cer-
tainty, very competitive production costs, and
advances in copyright protection, as well as
Mexico's recent participation in talks to create
a Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
ProMexico's Toronto representative, José
A.Peral, spoke about the business opportuni-
ties for Mexico and Canada, and invited those
present to look for synergies and opportunities
for both countries in this sector.
Chantal Ramsay, Counsellor for Economic
Affairs for Ontario in Mexico, delivered a
short presentation on the services that her
office provides to Canadian businesses, and
underlined the importance of taking advantage
of recent developments in this sector in Mex-
ico.
The seminar's keynote speaker was Ricardo
Alvarez, Project Leader for Creative Industries
at ProMexico. Alvarez outlined Mexico's rapid
growth in digital audiovisual production, and
its leadership in Latin America. He also noted
that Mexico is the largest producer of video
games, digital animation, multimedia, etc. in
the Spanish language, and that Mexico is a
larger consumer of video games than the rest
of Latin America combined.
Alonso Ulloa, Advisor to the State of Jalisco
for the Digital Ciudad Creativa project ex-
plained why Guadalajara was chosen as the
site for this project, which will involve the
development of 40 hectares in the centre of the
city. Emphasizing Jalisco's importance in this
industry, Ulloa said that Jalisco exports more
in the technology sector than they do in the
tequila sector.
