JUNE 2011 Publication of the Consulate General of Mexico in Toronto

Supply chain opportunities and a flourishing ex-

port market were the focus for more than 400 Cana-

dian business leaders during the first-ever MexDay

in Canada, June 13-14.

The event, held at the Ottawa Convention Centre,

was part of the two-day Business 2 Business Forum

hosted by Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters

(CME). Several senior government officials were

also in attendance, including Mexico’s Secretary of

Economy, Bruno Ferrari, and Canada’s Minister of

International Trade, Ed Fast.

“In today’s global economy, Mexico represents a

significant opportunity for Canadian businesses to

diversify sales and enhance manufacturing opera-

tions,” explained Jeff Brownlee, vice president,

public affairs and partnerships, with CME. “We

hope MexDay in Canada sheds some light on the

great work already being done between the two

countries, and exposes new areas for mutual invest-

ment and growth.”

Mexico represents Canada’s third largest trading

partner, accounting for roughly $30 billion in bila-

teral trade each year. More than 2,500 Canadian-

owned companies currently conduct operations in

Mexico, but both sides agree that there is room for

additional development.

“There are a number of key sectors CME mem-

bers are actively taking a look at,” said Brownlee.

“Mining, agribusiness, transportation, aerospace

and information technologies, just to name a few.

And not just large corporations, either; small and

mid-sized enterprises especially are continuously

searching for new mar-

kets and new ways to

remain competitive.”

MexDay in Canada

was organized jointly

by the Embassy of

Mexico in Canada, the

CME, the Mexican

Business Council for

F o r e i g n T r a d e

(COMCE), the Mexican

Secretary of Economy

and ProMéxico.

Government and industry representatives from 13

Mexican states were

also on hand to speak

about the diversity in

regional opportunities

across the country.

Participants included

the Governor of Queré-

taro, José Calzada Ro-

virosa, whose state

houses many of the

most important compa-

nies in the aerospace

industry.

The Consulate General will take a working

visit to Manitoba on June 16, 17 and 18, hea-

ded by the Consul General, Ambassador Mau-

ricio Toussaint. The visit will include a Mobi-

le Consulate; supervision of the Seasonal

Agricultural Workers Program (SAWP), with

visits to farms and meetings with workers and

employers; meetings with members of the

MexyCan Association and other groups from

the Mexican community; the business seminar

"México: The Strategic Partner for Manitoba,"

to promote economic relationships between

Mexico and Manitoba; and meetings with

local and provincial officials.

Mobile Consulate in Winnipeg

In order to support the Mexican community

residing in Winnipeg, Manitoba, this consular

office will hold a Mobile Consulate in Winni-

peg on June 18, 2011 from 9 am - 6 pm at the

Caboto Centre, located at 1055 Wilkes Ave,

Winnipeg, Manitoba R3P 2L7.

The following services will be available:

passports, birth registrations, certificates is-

sued per request of parties, applications for

sending OP7's (authorization to issue a pass-

port for a minor).

The Mobile Consulate will provide services

by appointment, therefore it is recommended

that Mexicans interested in any of our services

make an appointment as soon as possible.

Appointments can currently be requested by

email at: [email protected] or

by telephone at (416)368-2875, ext.234 and

236. It is important to leave your full name

and the service you would require, as well as a

phone number where you can receive infor-

mation about the requirements associated

with the documentation you request.

With the Mobile Consulate in Winnipeg,

the consulate seeks to maintain a presence in

Manitoba's Mexican community and to bring

within their reach the most common docu-

mentation services that, due to Manitoba's

distance from the consular office, are diffi-

cult to access for many fellow Mexican citi-

zens.

Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program

(SAWP)

In 2010, farms in Manitoba hired 336 Mexi-

can agricultural workers through the SAWP.

The Consulate General's schedule includes

visits to employment centres, interviews with

employers and meetings with agricultural

workers.

Follow-up will also be conducted in cases

concerning the protection of Mexican workers.

Community Issues

In Manitoba, an area which is served by this

Consulate General, there is a very active

Mexican community.

For this reason, the working visit will inclu-

de interviews with representatives from the

Mexican community, as well as the acting

member of the Advisory Board of the Institute

for Mexicans Abroad (CCIME) Adriana Ceja

de Zagrodnik, who is also the president of the

only association of Mexicans established in

this region, MexyCan.

In addition, free textbooks will be donated to

the Mexican community; the "Voting Rights

for Mexican Citizens Abroad, 2012" campaign

will be promoted; and the process of renova-

ting the CCIME in the province will be given

a boost.

Economic Promotion

The working visit to Manitoba includes a

business seminar entitled "México: The Strate-

gic Partner for Manitoba," on Friday, June 17,

organized by Manitoba Trade and Investment

in coordination with this Consulate General,

and with support from the Department of Fo-

reign Affairs and International Trade of Cana-

da (DFAIT).

The seminar is the result of a meeting that

was held between Consul General Mauricio

Toussaint and the Manitoba Minister of Entre-

preneurship, Training and Trade, Peter Bjorn-

son, with representatives from the Mexican

business community in Manitoba, in Septem-

ber 2010.

The primary objective of the seminar is to

invite Manitoba businesses, from a variety of

industry sectors, to participate in export-

import projects, strategic alliances and/or in-

vestments. To help achieve this goal, Pro-

Mexico and the Mexico Tourism Board will

be on hand.

Officials from Manitoba have expressed

their interest in strengthening their province's

commercial relationships with the states of

Nuevo León, Guanajuato, Durango, the state

of Mexico and Mexico City. To achieve this, it

is necessary to promote trade among the small

and mid-sized businesses of Manitoba and

Mexico.

Mexico is Manitoba's fourth largest trade

partner in the agricultural sector.

Meetings with Local Officials

The Consul General, Mauricio Toussaint,

will also head meetings with officials from the

local and provincial governments in the eco-

nomic and tourism sectors.

One such meeting will be with Don Callis,

the executive director of Manitoba Trade and

Investment.
