Dear Friends

In a recent outlook Gartner highlights that worldwide IT spending is forecast to total $3.6 trillion in 2011, a 5.1 percent increase from 2010. In 2010, worldwide IT spending totaled $3.4 trillion, up 5.4 percent from 2009

levels. Gartner has raised its outlook for 2011 global IT spending from its previous forecast of 3.5 percent growth. In 2010, the IT industry performed better than Gartner’s previous forecast of 3.2 percent growth. currency exchange rate fluctuations have continued to affect the U.S. dollar-denominated forecast. Of the 2.2 percentage point increase in IT spending growth in 2010, 1.6 percent is attributable to the recent devaluation of the U.S. dollar against other currencies.

Aided by favorable U.S. dollar exchange rates, global IT spending growth is expected to exceed 5 percent in 2010, but a similar level of growth in 2011 — while forecast — is far from certain, given continued macroeconomic uncertainty. While the global economic situation is improving, the recovery is slow and hampered by a sluggish growth outlook in the important mature economies of the U.S. and Western Europe. There are also growing concerns about the ability of key emerging economies to sustain relatively high growth rates. Nevertheless, as well as a fundamental enabler of cost reduction and cost optimization, investment in IT is seen increasingly as an important element in business growth strategies. As the global economy repairs itself in coming years, we are optimistic about continued healthy spending on IT.

The telecom equipment market is poised for the strongest growth in 2011, with worldwide telecom equipment spending forecast to grow 9.1 percent. Strong sales of mobile devices in the third quarter of 2010, driven by smartphones in mature markets and white box devices in emerging markets, as well as stronger local currencies, resulted in an upward revision of Gartner’s forecast.

The computing hardware segment is forecast to grow 7.5 percent in 2011, but Gartner analysts said vendors face possible challenges, particularly in the area of PC growth, given likely weak economic growth through the first half of 2011.

ASUS launches Partner reach out program ASUS has announced the launch of the most unique

and innovative partner communication program in India – ABC – ASUS Business Connect. ABC is a step to further facilitate smooth communication between the company and its channel partners. Starting today, ASUS will set up units of its Videophone Touch AiGuru SV1T - the World’s First PC-Free, touch enable Skype videophone in 324 partner locations across the country to help partner communicate directly with ASUS Head Office in Mumbai, in the most effective way possible – face to face. Partners from C, D and E class cities have always had a problem in reducing the communication gap with vendors since most of them don’t have representatives in these locations. The communication channel through sub-distributor or distributor was not always the most effective way to reach to vendors and sometimes proved to be too cumbersome for partners to partake in while engrossed in their busy schedule. ASUS has undertaken this initiative to tackle this problem and will only be focusing on C, D and E class cities for this project.

In the first phase, ASUS will be making an investment of 5.1 million towards the devices and target its top 324 ASUS Elite Club Partners in C, D and E Class cities. Partners from these belts have always faced an issue of not having a direct contact with vendors. Channel meets and seminars do help in the process but they are usually sporadic and offer only a many to one form of interaction. With the launch of this initiative, partners can now reach ASUS directly, one to one and face to face from the comfort of their own offices. Partners frequently face issues with product updates, service issues and availability related queries and with the launch of this initiative, ASUS hopes to address these needs of partners. Partners can now get real-time updates of any issues, clarify their service related queries and touch base with the ASUS product team for updates.

How big is printer market in India? How Canon has positioned itself into this market?

The printer market has grown in leaps and bounds in the last few years.

CLOUD Computing

Cloud Computing technology and services have been witnessing quite a lot of attention for the

past couple of year but in the same time the subsequent confusion and a gradual understanding of the inevitability of many of the concepts of cloud computing has grown up. As the aspect of cloud computing is moving beyond the pure hype stage and begins to move into mainstream adoption, the questions on the subject of cloud are changing frequently. Today, the term “cloud computing” is being loosely applied and defined differently, and it’s creating a lot of confusion in the market, which in turn generating lots of misunderstanding, overestimation and underestimation, misuse and miscommunication with regard to cloud computing. There are many decision makers who do not understand the terminology of IaaS, PaaS and SaaS and the differences between public, private and hybrid clouds.

The concept of cloud computing has developed from earlier ideas such as grid and utility computing, and aims to provide a completely Internet-driven, dynamic and scalable service-oriented IT environment, which can be accessed from anywhere using any web-capable device.

Five Attributes of Cloud

ComputingAs cloud computing begins to move

beyond the pure hype stage and into the beginning of mainstream adoption, Gartner has identified the five attributes of cloud computing. By using these attributes, it is possible to see how strongly a cloud solution (or service) adheres to the cloud computing model.

Gartner defines cloud computing as a style of computing in which scalable and elastic IT-enabled capabilities are delivered as a service to external customers using Internet technologies.

The five attributes of cloud computing are:

Service-Based: Consumer concerns are abstracted from provider concerns through service interfaces that are well-defined. The interfaces hide the implementation details and enable a completely automated response by the provider of the service to the consumer of the service. The service could be considered “ready to use” or “off the shelf” because the service is designed to serve the specific needs of a set of consumers, and the technologies are tailored to that need rather than the service being tailored to how the technology works. The articulation of the service feature is based on service levels and IT

outcomes (availability, response time, performance versus price, and clear and predefined operational processes), rather than technology and its capabilities. In other words, what the service needs to do is more important than how the technologies are used to implement the solution.

Scalable and Elastic: The service can scale capacity up or down as the consumer demands at the speed of full automation (which may be seconds for some services and hours for others). Elasticity is a trait of shared pools of resources. Scalability is a feature of the underlying infrastructure and software platforms. Elasticity is associated with not only scale but also an economic model that enables scaling in both directions in an automated fashion. This means that services scale on demand to add or remove resources as needed.

Shared: Services share a pool of resources to build economies of scale. IT resources are used with maximum efficiency. The underlying infrastructure, software or platforms are shared among the consumers of the service (usually unknown to the consumers). This enables unused resources to serve multiple needs for multiple consumers, all working at the same time.

Metered by Use: Services are tracked with usage metrics to enable multiple payment models. The service provider has

a usage accounting model for measuring the use of the services, which could then be used to create different pricing plans and models. These may include pay-as-you go plans, subscriptions, fixed plans and even free plans. The implied payment plans will be based on usage, not on the cost of the equipment. These plans are based on the amount of the service used by the consumers, which may be in terms of hours, data transfers or other use-based attributes delivered.

Uses Internet Technologies: The service is delivered using Internet identifiers, formats and protocols, such as URLs, HTTP, IP and representational state transfer Web-oriented architecture. Many examples of Web technology exist as the foundation for Internet-based services. Google’s Gmail, Amazon.com’s book buying, eBay’s auctions and Lolcats’ picture sharing all exhibit the use of Internet and Web technologies and protocols.

Cloud Computing In India

In India, almost all the big tech players are moving aggressively into the cloud based market. According to a study by Zinnov, the total market of cloud computing in India stands at $110 million and is expected to reach a figure of about $1,084 million by 2015.

In Indian market Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) has witnessed the most

rapid uptake until now. As components of the overall cloud market, SaaS in India is likely to reach a mark of $650 million by 2015, while Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) markets cumulatively would touch $434 million each by then.

Divulging details on the SaaS market, the report further says that the domestic market for SaaS is estimated to be about $66 million and is currently dominated by Collaborative Applications, CRM, ERP and Email workloads.

In addition to the global providers of PaaS, Indian companies have also sprung up offering cloud-based Platform-as-a-Service. Several Indian companies are beginning to offer IaaS to leverage the untapped market potential.

In India the Telecom, IT-BPO and Retail have the highest spending on IT as a percentage of revenues, while the verticals like Telecom and BFSI are highly mature with their IT adoption and they show higher potential towards cloud adoption going forward. In an effort to meet global standards, verticals such as Education, Healthcare, and Government show massive potential for cloud adoption in the immediate future.

In India, cloud platforms will be particularly important for SMBs also. Research shows that more than 90% of senior business decision makers believe business cycles will continue to be unpredictable in the next few years. As a result, 75% of business decision

maker thinks to invest in a more flexible technology, be able to scale it up and down rapidly and communicate faster with technology partners.

The ground realties in India is that the penetration of cloud computing is negligible. Today, vendors are trying to create awareness so that they can tap the latent market demand. Although the vendors are getting demand from the enterprise segment but they are not so bullish on SMB segment.

Benefits of cloud for SMBs

Organizations taking a leadership role in harnessing the power of cloud computing may gain competitive advantage through more rapid innovation, massive scalability (up and down) to optimize resources and costs and access to resources otherwise not readily available. Speed of implementation and degree of cost savings will be impacted by the degree of customization required by the organization. The key is an organization’s ability to integrate cloud computing into a broader strategy and architected plan to align IT resources closely with overall business goals, objectives and needs. In some cases, cloud computing may be the answer for receiving and/or delivering services. In other cases, leveraging the underlying technologies may be the most appropriate choice.

As small and medium business are

CLOUD Computing

surging ahead, automating business processes and enhancing effectiveness are becoming their top priorities. Today in India, there are nearly eight million of small-to-medium-sized businesses populations who represent a huge potential for cloud computing and can be a prospect client for the cloud vendors. There are many decision makers who are considering to harness the benefit coming out of cloud computing. They believe that cloud computing can reduce their TCO and can provide better RoI because of its ability to cut costs and reduce the need for capital equipment—both hardware and software.

Cloud computing and infrastructure

Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) is a well-known and much-discussed concept: by eliminating in-house data centres and relying instead on IT resources hosted by an external provider and delivered on demand, companies no longer have to worry about capital expenditure on servers and storage, and only have to pay for what they need on an operational basis. Mature virtualization technologies enable hosting

providers to provision new environments for their customers very rapidly, and decommission them immediately when no longer required; moreover, the economies of scale can lead to significant savings.

Cloud Computing And Software Innovation

By harnessing open and collaborative technologies, cloud computing has the potential to revolutionise software development – particularly outsourced software development projects.

Software delivery is a discipline of software economics that balances risks and opportunities. In a cloud environment, clients can obtain delivery and cost advantages quickly and reliably by utilising ‘packaged’ development environments – standardized toolsets packaged for rapid deployment on a virtualized infrastructure. Given that the parameters, integration and environment are already proven, the service management of the environment is de-risked from the outsourcer’s point of view. Full or partial development environments can be made available and decommissioned very quickly and easily, and clients only need to pay for them for as long as they are needed.

There are other specific advantages to software development in the cloud that are not available in traditional development. For example, having a standardised virtualised back-end infrastructure means that updates, patches and new capabilities can be introduced in a controlled manner. This again reduces risk, as the client and the client-facing team handle interaction with the development environment through a Web browser. The cloud can also provide the process enactment and measurement tools that are imperative for achieving agility at scale.

Equally, the principles of cloud computing enable outsourcers and clients to harness a new social or community model for software development and delivery. Faster on- and off-boarding for developers, testers and users in development environments means clients can work more closely and flexibly with their outsourced partners to combine their collective intelligence. They can very quickly become co-developers of the project, which should result in a better understanding of the target solution.

Software delivery requires a platform that is architected for automation, collaboration and reporting. By using a

Page 18: Consumer Infoline

18 | Consumer Infoline | January 2011

common development environment within a cloud, the client and the outsourcer no longer have to investigate or debate which tools to use for each project. Instead, whether the tools come from one vendor or many, the baseline environments managed in the cloud are standardised, proven and stable.

This is an approach that has proved very successful in the open source community, and is increasingly being utilised in commercial development projects. Even in more traditionally-minded businesses, the trend in software development is to move development tools away from individual developers’ desktops and into a collaborative server environment. Cloud computing takes this one step further by sourcing the tools themselves from the cloud. The result is an increased ability to focus on business-level activities and to re-use existing resources by leveraging Web services.

The benefits for both outsourcing providers and their clients are clear: by utilising a cloud environment, clients can monitor the progress of the outsourced development team more closely and improve project governance. Meanwhile, the outsourcer is able to gain a closer insight into the requirements and preferences of the client, helping to deliver a better end product and reducing time wasted on developing unnecessary or unwanted features.

Benefits Of Cloud Computing

Today the oraganisation considers cloud computing to be a potentially cost-efficient model for provisioning processes, applications and services while making IT management simpler and increasing business responsiveness. In a cost-benefit analysis, a properly implemented and leveraged cloud computing model will drive lower cost-of-ownership, responsive delivery of services and higher service quality. Cloud computing can enable rapid business innovation by delivering easy-to-use computing services to users “on demand,” regardless of their location or the type of device they are using. The cloud-based service can be “public,” “private” or a combination of the two, sometimes referred to as a “hybrid cloud.”

Selecting the right use of cloud computing results in lower cost, by taking advantage of economies of scale and automated IT operations while optimizing investment in existing infrastructure. The resulting solution rapidly adjusts the volume of users as workload increases or decreases. Payment or internal chargeback

for the services is more flexible and typically occurs on a usage basis.

Preparing For The Cloud

Cloud computing impacts the entire enterprise, so organisations are looking at how they can structure themselves to get ready for it. The challenge is to understand the enterprise architecture – the underlying logic of an organisation that spans its strategy, resources, processes and supporting IT infrastructure – and to optimise it for a services-based cloud approach. There is a need for tools to visualise, analyse and communicate the enterprise architecture.

Once the architecture has been mapped and understood, the client will need to decide whether its new cloud architecture should be public or private – that is, whether the management, deployment and access of the cloud will be via a traditional public environment (generally, the Internet), or hosted on a private network. This decision is largely based around security. Outsourcers can help their clients understand whether security issues necessitate a private cloud; if so, the client may either work with the outsourcing partner to build, run and manage a new private cloud, or simply deploy into an existing one. More often, a traditional public network will provide sufficient security, and the outsourcing partner will recommend a third party to host, run and manage a public cloud environment to which both the client and the partner can connect.

Dependence on a networked infrastructure (possibly running through a public network) can also cause anxiety for clients, so outsourcing providers need to be able to provide reassurance. It is critical for the outsourcing partner to be able to monitor the entire IT stack (application, database, system, security and network performance) against agreed SLA thresholds, and for the infrastructure

to be supported with redundancy and capable of rapid recovery in the event of a disaster.

Finally, it is vital to create and foster a sense of community and involvement with cloud development within both the client and outsourcing organisations. Without engagement from both sides, the benefits of the social interaction mechanisms built into the cloud development model will not be realised, and many of the problems associated with traditional development models can resurface.

In The endUse of cloud computing, public or

private, can enable greater innovation through collaboration, rapid deployment and lower costs. This can enable greater levels of “experimentation” with new ideas. In addition, many future innovations will integrate innovative application and information services from others (suppliers, third parties, customers, business partners and government) that, in turn, may be built as cloud-based services.

Cloud computing can provide access to needed, standardized IT resources from a third party provider that can enable you to rapidly deploy new applications, services or computing resources without re-engineering your infrastructure—or, in some cases, without having to have an infrastructure at all. Cloud computing is about the “industrialization” of IT infrastructure, including the data center, to reduce costs while improving quality and time to delivery. Cloud computing provides a set of core services or building blocks that can be rapidly assembled into higher level business services for quick deployment. In some cases, organizations will purchase cloud-based services to augment or replace their existing infrastructure. Other organizations will look for ways to retool their infrastructure to support being a deliverer of cloud-based services. l

According to a study by Zinnov, the total market of cloud computing in India stands at $110 million and is

expected to reach a figure of about $1,084 million by 2015.

Business communications often fail to keep pace with the demand for real-time

communications to address mission-critical business needs. Unified communications offers new flexibility and manageability across multimodal applications to deliver unprecedented levels of connection for the distributed workforce. Business communications have become more complex, and despite investments in technology, such as instant messaging and mobile devices, companies still have difficulties contacting key decision-makers in a timely manner. To maintain a competitive edge and grow profitably, companies need to respond more quickly to their employees and customers and must avoid communication obstructions. Companies are often unaware of the high cost to their business caused by delayed communications that are considered a normal part of the workday. According to a recent Forrester survey of IT decision-makers, more than 50% of companies’ knowledge workers experience project delays on a weekly basis due to the inability to reach key decision-makers. This has a direct impact on both business outcomes and individual worker productivity. Unified Communication Simplifying Business Process

Unified communication applications simplify communications and allow employees to reach each others and not just an unattended communication device. Unified communications offer several benefits for streamlining communications:

• Reaches out to each other using a single address. Employees only need one phone number or Internet address to find the other person, which eliminates the need for multiple addresses.

• Integrates collaboration and communication technology. Unified communications links together collaboration technology such as email, instant messaging, and calendaring with communication devices such as telephones, voice messaging, and video.

• Supports advanced find-me capability. Because unified communications is independent of the media used and is based on Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), it has the ability to be media independent and

locates others on whatever device is most appropriate.

• Provides easy user interface with advanced desktop functionality. This allows the user to point and click to set up collaboration sessions and conference with others blending audio, Web, and video as needed within the same session. Business Benefits Of Unified Com-munications Adoption

Unified communications provides a technical solution that solves real business problems. Worker productivity is a sign of well-managed business, and companies need to look more closely at their internal communications to eliminate problems of lack of growth in employee productivity and customer attrition. Business benefits for unified communications include:

• Improved accessibility of information and experts throughout the enterprise. The easier it is for workers and customers to access information and experts, the better they can resolve issues and complete tasks.

• Flexible workgroups, which enable faster problem resolution. Collaboration among workers accelerates decision-making and provides a faster remedy to issues that arise.

• Better value from existing internal applications. Employees use multiple forms of communication but often do not fully use the tools provided due to their complexity. As user interfaces becomes simpler, employees will better use tools provided to them.

• Faster response to customer requests.

Customers feel that the company is looking out for their best interests with an immediate response to their problems.

• Avoidance of project delays due to communication silos. Companies find their workers often hampered by communication silos that are not connected to other applications and back-end systems, which often leads to projects slipping on their deadlines. By providing a fully integrated experience across all applications, workers can more readily respond to critical issues.

• Greater control over work schedules and timeline adherence. Business managers have now eliminated one major obstruction in the slowdown of work efforts with real-time connectivity among employees.

In the endCommunication technology will

continue to evolve and new features and benefits will be added. However, in a fast-paced market, companies need to take advantage of the tools available today and need to start deploying them within their work place or risk falling behind competitively. Unified communications helps firms make better use of existing application investments and at the same time provides the ability to tie the applications together to create a more effective collaborative work experience for its employees. Firms in highly competitive markets should evaluate how unified communications can accelerate a company’s time to market and create a more productive workforce. l

Converged Infrastructure -Still A ‘Black Box’ to IT Managers

After a decade of physical server sprawl, massive growth in storage, and the emergence

of hierarchical network architectures, IT complexity has reached an all-time high. Customers have already begun the work to reinvent their IT infrastructure and are quickly moving to more efficient and business-ready platforms. With the advent of new technologies, Converged Infrastructure Architecture is emerging as a central design feature which offers high efficiency, high performance, and the ability to quickly right size the infrastructure. The movement to integrated or converged technology is not new. The market has already witnessed this trend in the server market twice in the past of 30 years, and current market data indicates that the industry is at the very beginning of the next phase in Information Technology space. This next business cycle is “service centric”, which carries a clear set of objectives: simplify and reduce complexity, maximize resource utilization, and shorten time to market to more quickly realize business value. IDC estimates that converged infrastructure market would be worth US$35 billion globally by 2012.

Today, IT infrastructure has become the backbone for every business. For organizations to continue to grow and evolve their business, ongoing innovation and IT expansion has became essential part of their strategy. Majority of companies today support their own technology and have built a complex series of hardware and software solutions that they themselves have carefully tuned and integrated to meet the performance and availability objectives of each application. As the size of IT environments has grown, so too have the management costs associated with system deployment and maintenance, placing significant pressure on IT budgets and staffing resources. Why Converged Infrastructure?

Ideally, IT organizations want to create a dynamic environment where infrastructure can automatically grow, shrink, and redeploy at an optimized price point or monthly fee, as business demands change. While this has long been a vision, the realities of building in this type of flexibility are difficult to achieve. Virtualization has become the start for many companies

looking to lower hardware cost and create a more dynamic and mobile infrastructure. Virtual machines can be moved from one physical server to another; however, this requires a shared storage environment and a high-performance, predictable network architecture. Building an environment where network policies, security policies, and application SLAs move with the virtual machines across servers, storage devices, and networks requires a tightly coupled set of infrastructure, management tools, policy tools, and operating environments. Without this coupling, application visibility is limited and the ability to dynamically reallocate resources is compromised.

Converged infrastructure also brings the benefits of faster deployment time (relative to standalone hardware), improved availability with preset SLAs, and lower management costs through the use of automation tools. The true benefit is not so much in the hardware but in the agility of the environment that offloads the manual tasks of staff, ensures a predictable operating environment, and shortens time to business value. Challenges

The greatest challenge for adoption of converged systems is not technology but a change in thinking. To garner full benefit from converged systems, IT organizations

will have to think differently about procurement and be satisfied with a smaller set of qualified vendors. This is counter to traditional procurement that has at least a wider list of vendors and typically multiple product options. Converged systems also require that the IT strategy link to the goals of the business. This type of purchase requires a commitment to a singular architecture, and the needs of the business must be served on an ongoing basis with this investment. At the same time, customers should develop a policy-based automation scheme that exploits the full benefit of mobility across the system and prioritizes application needs relative to business outcomes.

Converged technology requires more interaction between previously siloed technology groups, IT departments, and even business users. This is important in a service-centric IT infrastructure if it is to deliver better business outcomes and typically requires a more complete set of governance rules. For example, networking and server groups would have to agree on this architecture, and facilities and IT departments would have to be aligned on the goals for energy management. The advantage to an integrated technology approach is that it does help drive a consensus around application priorities and goals for IT metrics, improving communication between teams through a single management tool and framework. Conclusion

As the market moves into this next phase of IT, the ability to lower complexity and improve flexibility will be key, especially as businesses recover from the economic downturn and look toward innovation as a means to drive revenue and profits.

During this next phase of IT, customers will need to develop a set of governance rules that map back to their application portfolio and link to their IT infrastructure, creating a more defined connection between IT and changes in the business. This process involves not only a technology assessment but also a business assessment and rationalization of the application portfolio. Customers will need to choose their suppliers carefully and should look for a vendor that can provide a holistic set of IT infrastructure, software, and services offerings to bring this future vision together. l

Networking Buzz

How big is networking industry in India?

Our estimate of the Indian networking industry is around USD 1.5B. What is equally interesting to note is that its not a saturated market, but has lot of growth opportunities in the next one decade. How Allied Telesis is positioned in this market?

Allied Telesis has always been a silent leader in the market. We have been extremely focused in India, and we wouldn’t be wrong in claiming that we have been able to build a very strong brand equity in the markets that we have focused and build business over a period of time.

We have always been a technology vendor, and I am happy to see high acceptability in our focused markets for Allied Telesis. As a thought leader, its important for us to not only to fulfill requirements in the networking industry, but also to create and build markets by demand generation. We have pioneered the entire concept of Triple Play almost a decade back and globally have built millions of ports. In India, we are seen huge success of our Triple Play solutions and advanced IP based services in India in the past two years.

I must mention here that this hasn’t happened overnight. We had to have the conviction in what we started doing almost two years back, it was more of concept selling. We have successfully build one of our POC labs for a complete triple play solution offering in Mumbai to showcase the entire solution. We

invite profiled customers to the POC lab and have live experience of our solution before they invest in the same.

Allied Telesis is market leaders in Ethernet switching in the Enterprise Space in Japan - a very large and matured market. This gives us a fantastic position to be in, and we are leveraging our leadership position to work closely with the Japanese organisations in India.

For India, Allied Telesis as a vendor has high focus and investments are being ramped up in the right areas. Allied Telesis has been one of the first vendors in the networking space to go Green and for the past so many years we have had a complete range of Green products and solution offerings. We follow and incorporate all the US and European safety standards while developing our products.

One of the biggest advantage Allied Telesis has over some of our competitors is that we have our own 7 large R&D facilities worldwide and our manufacturing setups. This offers us high flexibility and faster turnaround time in developing and offering solutions to our customers. Also, owning the manufacturing facilities ensures very high levels of quality checks and controls on every product churned out. Worldwide we have seen failure rates of less than one percent.

We have two years back build a full fledged RMA Support Center in India to ensure a faster turnaround time to our partners for hardware replacements. Allied Telesis with some of the above mentioned advantages and offerings is in quite a unique position to be the vendor

of choice in specific addressable markets and we have been able to leverage the same well. What ranges of product and solution do you have?

Allied Telesis has a very wide range of products and solutions –about 1200 odd products in various categories. The expanse of the product range is pretty wide to address most markets- SOHO, SMB , Enterprise to largest of Telcos.

Our focus in India has been more on the fast growing SMB and the Enterprise space. We have a good partner base in the TierII space and address the SMB space through them. We focus more on market development programs and demand generation in specific spaces. For eg – Triple Play solutions and advanced level of triple play applications like IPTV, Security/Survillience, Industrial Grade solutions to address the Automation space being some of comprehensive offerings in the market, not to forget the big Media Conversion biz, where in, we still hold leadership position in most markets. We have a very aggressive and robust road map on our switching portfolio in the coming Quarters too, in line with some of the above market verticals mentioned, where we have focus globally.

We are also have some very innovative Data Center solutions in our offerings and have already picked up some impressive customers whose entire Data Centers are on Allied Telesis solutions. All these products are solutions are in line with our global philosophy of adhering to IEEE standards and industry standard CLI. What this means to partners is high ease of deployment, and seamless integration

is being very highly appreciated by our large customer basein terms of the intelligence & ease it offers to manage large networks. Can you put some light on channel engagement program? How many channel partners do you have? Do you have any plans to increase the current numbers?

I have personally never believed in just number of channel partners. Whats more important is to have partners who are like minded and are wanting to build a skilled biz model on networking, instead of just being one of the followers. We have been in the past 5 years been able to build a very strong partnership in the Indian market. Also, with advanced levels of solutions like true triple play and IPTV, and creating markets for these solutions in India, we are looking at having specialized partnerships to increase this biz pie.

For the SMB space, we are adding partners across the country. As mentioned above, we have fantastic price-performance products to cater to the SMB - both at base levels of switching to entry levels of L3 Switching. We have well suited wireless and routing solutions in this space too. There is high impetus on training channels. What is your go-to-market strategy? And what verticals you are targeting at?

Our GTM has been quite clear. We are a very very strong technology vendor and we have always believed that its not anymore about 24 ports or 48 ports, neither about switching fabric capacity. While a developing market, customers in India are today quite clear as to what they want. Its not about the brand only. Importantly, its more about the solution they are investing in, whether it offers them high levels of flexibility, ease of operations and manageability, and seamless integration. We score quite high in these areas.

Partnerships form a important element in the chain. We are hence investing quite a bit in building strong partnerships – both in Tier I as well as Tier II space and training and honing their skill sets. Healthcare, Hospitality, Surveillance, Education and heavy manufacturing are some of the key vertical focus areas for Allied Telesis in India. What are some of the trends that Networking Industry is going to see in near future?

We have mentioned this earlier too and we see it happening fast in the market. Networks are converging and most growing or enterprise customers today need a triple play ready network. With network needs becoming bandwidth hungry and high on applications, the industry is looking forward to better network manageability features, that are simple by nature. We also see the Heathcare market to be quite under served at this point in time. We believe, like in Japan we have taken a strong positioning by offering a complete solution to this industry vertical, the same curve happening in India in the next 3-4 years.

From a surveillance and security market, we see more and more adaption from analog to IP platform. IP enables high flexibility to have most applications on it for eg – The PA System in Delhi Terminal 3 – build on international standards is completely on IP. The backend IP infrastructure is completely Allied Telesis switching solution, which is triple play ready. What are your future plans and pro-grams in India?

Allied Telesis is doing specific investments in the country to get into the next league of SD100M in India. We are doubling our manpower within India. We are also improving on our TAC support services. Services are in the cards. How Allied Telesis is focused on it Channel partners? What is your dis-tribution model in India? What do you do to strengthen the channel?

Distribution Model - Allied Telesis operates on an indirect model. Our distributors buy from

Allied Telesis in Singapore and service the Indian market by having products locally avail for them. They also bring in lot of value by working closely with partners in specific spaces. l

CHANNEL buzz

Throughout 2010, Cloud computing was perceived as the future of enterprise IT; acceleration of cloud technology across emerging Indian market was mainly the result

of favorable technology climate around virtualization, open standards, and standardized and commoditized IT infrastructure. In the channel community, while many showed their concerns around cloud computing; others remained optimistic and benefitted from the growing conventional technology.

In 2011, the cloud-related hype of 2009 and most of 2010 will steadily give way to a more sober, and realistic understanding of the relevance and applicability of cloud computing among organizations. The debate over public versus private versus hybrid approaches, which led to cloud-related market confusion over the past 12 months; in 2011 will actually serve to help organizations better understand and therefore position cloud-based approaches relative to existing IT initiatives. Channel is also expected to play a crucial role in making IT decision makers educate on the distinction between internal versus external service deployments, and between dedicated and shared access. Over the next 12 months, we expect cloud computing to increasingly be considered alongside (and often compared to) other, related sourcing approaches, including those offered by more traditional outsourcing vendors and hosted service providers.

As per Springboard Research, Indian organizations are currently far more receptive to cloud-related marketing messages than other organizations in APEJ region. As per a recent Springboard study, only 19 percent of enterprises in India view cloud as “over-hyped.” In terms of overall spending, the public cloud market in AP remains dominated by software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions. Among Indian organizations, SaaS offerings, storage and enterprise applications (BI, CRM, ERP, etc.) are the most widely adopted. Springboard Research expects this adoption to evolve significantly over the next 12 to 18 months as demand in other areas, including cloud-based web conferencing and email, increases. However, we expect infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) offerings from both cloud providers as well as more traditional telco providers to grow rapidly. For scenarios like app dev/test and sourcing of excess computing capacity, cloud computing is typically far more flexible and cost effective than traditional sourcing options.

Throughout 2011, distribution channel partners – system integrators (SIs), value-added resellers (VARs) and even value-added distributors (VADs) will be in a particularly vulnerable

position as the IT market moves quickly toward cloud computing. However, the days of surviving on business models dependent on distributing generalized IT products with razor-thin margins and living day-to-day on cash turns supported by vendor-provided credit are quickly coming to a close. To make matters worse, the traditional large-scale SIs deals that supported channel partners for years are increasingly disappearing or are being won and delivered by vendors directly.

In 2011, regional SIs, VARs and distributors will be forced to better develop specialties by vertical industry and business solution to deliver the customer value required to survive. Throughout 2010, partners were pushed by their vendor suppliers to invest in skills around high growth solutions; and in 2011 too, Springboard believes that channel partners will need to elevate their customer intimacy and ability to deliver clear business value.

Springboard Research also believes that channel partners will continue to play an important – but not a dominant – role in helping customers procure SaaS and cloud-based solutions. A recent Springboard survey revealed that Indian organizations place the highest value on cloud-related channel partners in the region, well above the regional average, as 59 percent of Indian organizations believe that channel partners are helpful when buying cloud

CHANNEL buzzcomputing services/solutions. This trend is likely to accelerate in 2011 too as a cloud channel further develops and SaaS vendors reach a ceiling on how much their direct sales force and the web can achieve. Areas where distribution channel partners will play an important cloud role are:

• Advisors and Integrators: Local channel partners with intimate customer relationships; will need to play the role of an integrator, combining existing platforms at customer sites and newer cloud offerings. In a recent Springboard study, 43 percent of SaaS users integrated their SaaS application with another on-demand or on-premise application. In a hybrid model, customers who have made substantial investments in existing IT assets will require integration work when a cloud-based application is added, giving SIs enormous business opportunities.

• Customization: As per the recent Springboard Research survey, 52 percent of SaaS users in 2010 customized their on-demand application in some way or the other. In 2011 too, this trend is expected to provide considerable opportunity for channel partners familiar with local market conditions and regulatory requirements.

• Training: In 2011, channel partners are expected to play a crucial role in training the end customers on how to optimally use the various cloud-based applications. As per the Springboard survey, 21 percent of respondents currently believe cloud computing is more complex than deploying and managing in-house infrastructure, data, and applications.

Also, throughout 2011, channel are expected to play a crucial role in making CIOs and IT decision makers aware about the cloud-related security concerns, which are further expected to subside slowly as the approach is more fully understood among Indian enterprises. Instead in 2011, concerns will center around interoperability and integration of systems, data and processes likely to be accessed across multiple internal and external deployment scenarios.

Springboard believes that channel community has the biggest advantage of being close to IT decision maker, which can be leveraged effectively in case of cloud computing and in 2011, while many in the fraternity will continue to believe that growth of cloud means loss of their business, those who would take informed decisions and strategies their business model to address cloud opportunity will make profits. l

Allied Telesis Strengthens IP Surveillance SolutionAllied Telesis has announced its enhanced IP Surveillance solution. The next generation solution delivers mission-critical network

connectivity to make the analog-to-digital migration cost-effective, seamless and easy-to-deploy, all without the need to replace current cabling infrastructure.

Video Surveillance as a Service (VSaaS), secure digital (SD) storage cards on the surveillance camera, the emergence of mega-pixel IP network cameras, and searchable or forensic analytics are among market-moving trends providing benefits such as the secure storage of surveillance recordings, the need for higher resolution video and the emergence of surveillance analytics to better assess security related events through data on foot traffic, face recognition, and reconstruction of events from several camera sources. The Allied Telesis IP Surveillance solution meets requirements to effectively achieve these benefits while maintaining network uptime and high availability through its redundant, resilient networking gear; yields an optimal performance backbone for greater application Quality of Service prioritization of video services; and provides secure, remote monitoring for further security assurance.

Incorporating next generation technological advancements into its IP Surveillance solution-by adding optimized layer-2 and layer-3 switches, new media converters, and an enhanced graphical user interface (GUI)-Allied Telesis can now offer greater solution customization with lower costs, as no new wiring is required.

Shown this week at ASIS, the Allied Telesis IP surveillance solution includes several new components-The AT-8000 Series access-edge switches, designed to enable SD storage and analytics of video content at the edge while cost-

effectively connecting local copper devices over fiber at distances of up to 1.2 miles. This capability is ideal in IP video surveillance networks where remote cameras may be located beyond the reach of copper cabling. The AT-8000 Series also offers Power over Ethernet (PoE) capabilities with unique 24-port connectivity to maximize power, port, and connectivity options when adding new surveillance equipment to the network.

The AT-9000 Series switches, the most affordable layer-2 fiber core switches in the surveillance market, received an upgrade to the AlliedWare Plus operating system. In addition, the AT-9000/28SP small form-factor pluggable (SFP) module fiber distribution switch supports both Fast Ethernet as well as Gigabit Ethernet speeds.

AT-MC 605/606, the two latest media converters from Allied Telesis, enable greater network extension by converting existing analog phone-grade wiring into IP-ready cabling - perfect for mega-pixel IP security video streaming. Through plug-and-play deployment, enterprises can forgo the costly building integrity analysis of network resources, or the cost/need to rewire a premise with expensive Cat5 or fiber cable.

AlliedWare™ Plus, as part of the Allied Telesis Network Operating System (Network OS), provides a common interface across all platforms to minimize training costs associated with IP video network migrations and upgrades, enabling easier support processes.

Vertical StrengthsThe Allied Telesis IP surveillance solution is ideal for specialized markets requiring maximum uptime and optimized performance

to secure a physical location, information, and/or property. This includes Industrial Grade products. For example, Allied Telesis is working with international healthcare, education, government, service provider, and utility organizations to deploy its leading IP-based video security solutions around the world. Specifically, the Company leads in deploying these solutions to global healthcare facilities for use by emergency response and security teams to ensure patient, staff, and visitor safety. Allied Telesis also recently announced its design and implementation of a real-time IP surveillance solution in the education market in the Hoxie, Arkansas, U.S. School District, in which the Company provides a single-view, remotely managed, port-based virtual local area network (VLAN) to ensure a more secure campus environment for students, faculty, and staff.

In India, Allied Telesis has successfully deployed multiple campuses as well as city surveillance networks in various vertical spaces.

GIGABYTE ends 2010 with a bang

GIGABYTE reported a 37% year-over-year (YoY) revenue growth in Q4 FY10, providing a fitting ending to an outstanding year in which its motherboard sales in many Tier 2 and Tier 3 regions grew by over 100%. This result confirms the growing recognition of the value that GIGABYTE motherboards offer to customers in the Indian market, and the success of GIGABYTE’s aggressive marketing strategy in the country.

initiatives included adding more channel partners, increasing channel penetration and spread in the upcountry markets, sustaining growth in established markets, reinforcing post-sales infrastructure for both partners and customers, and attaining the No. 1 position in terms of channel satisfaction. However, the major credit for the successful year goes to GIGABYTE’s innovative, result-oriented programs for its channels, which drive over 85% of the company’s business.

Commenting on the growth, Rajan Sharma, General Manager, Marketing and Sales, GIGABYTE India, said, “During Q4 FY10, we continued to successfully execute our proven programs and schemes for channel partners. IN the newsIntel to Pay NVIDIA Licensing Fees of $1.5 BillionNVIDIA has announced that it has signed a new six-year cross-licensing agreement

with Intel. For the future use of NVIDIA’s technology, Intel will pay NVIDIA an aggregate of $1.5

billion in licensing fees payable in five annual installments, beginning Jan. 18, 2011.NVIDIA and Intel have also agreed to drop all outstanding legal disputes between

them. Under the new agreement, Intel will have continued access to NVIDIA’s full range of

patents. In return, NVIDIA will receive an aggregate of $1.5 billion in licensing fees, to be paid in annual installments, and retain use of Intel’s patents, consistent with its existing six-year agreement with Intel. This excludes Intel’s proprietary processors, flash memory and certain chipsets for the Intel platform. The existing agreement is to expire March 31, 2011.

Pursuant to U.S. GAAP, a portion of the proceeds will be accounted for and attributed to the settlement of prior legal claims. This amount, which NVIDIA anticipates to be less than $100 million, will be included in the company’s fourth-quarter results.

The balance of the licensing fees will be accounted for on a straight-line basis over the six-year term of the agreement. Accordingly it is anticipated that this would amount annually to approximately $233 million of operating income and an increase in net income of$0.29per diluted share, on a full year basis.
