Hornby-with-Farleton Parish Council – July 2013 Meeting The Clerk was asked to contact the Highways Dept re gulley cleaning. No objections were raised against the planning application for the erection of an agricultural building on Scale House Lane. It was noted what good use has been made of the Rota Bounce in the playground. Unfortunately, the issue of litter in the playground was also mentioned, as this has become a problem. Comments were made about the excellent job the Lengthsman has made of clipping down the Wenning side of the river. A discussion was held regarding the management of verges in the village. This revolved around whether the verges should be cut or not. Leaving the verges un-cut could possibly encourage more pollinating insects to the area. However, the verges would still need managing. More detailed minutes will be available in the folder in the Institute, once approved at the next meeting. There will not be a meeting in August unless any urgent items come up. Agendas will be displayed in the parish notice boards should a meeting be necessary. Therefore the next Parish Council meeting is expected to take place on Thursday, 12th September 2013, at 7:45pm in Hornby Institute. Vacancies on Hornby-with-Farleton Parish Council Due to the recent resignations of Cllr Mark Norris and Cllr Liz Allison, 2 vacancies
have become available on the Parish Council. The Parish Council meets on the sec-
ond Thursday of every month in the village Institute. These meetings usually last
about 1 – 1 ½ hours. At these meetings all issues regarding the parish are discussed
covering topics such as the playground, the highways and any planning applications
that have arisen. Anybody over the age of 18 can apply. Anyone interested should

Saint Margaret’s Festival, 14-20 July
I am writing (for the Contact deadline) at the end of Friday in Festival week – and what a week it has been, with the centre aisles of the church full, and the side aisles filling up, every evening for six consecutive hot sunny evenings. The Festival opened on Sunday night with a delightful musical evening based on the Psalms, and led by the combined choirs of Saint Margaret’s, Saint Mary’s, and the Hornby Choral Society: a superb opening for the week. Fr Luiz of Saint Mary’s, Hornby, opened the weekday programme on Monday with a superb unscripted address, discussing the tower in its 500th years as an enduring work of art that speaks afresh to each new generation – concluding with the eightEsided tower pointing us upwards to “the eighth day, God’s eternal day”. Andrew White’s delightful introduction to the history of the tower and the church on Tuesday was not all stones and architects, but local characters and folklore over centuries, and their links to national and international events. On another warm evening, Christine Burn opened an evening of poetry on Wednesday with four poems by local poet David Tait, and after an introduction to ‘the diverse collection of literature that we call the bible’, there was more poetry – from Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Philippians and Revelation. On Thursday, a hundred people gathered to hear Sam Ashton perform five delightful Betjeman poems, and I also concluded quoting Betjeman: “And is it true ... that God was man in Palestine, and lives today in bread and wine?” And finally tonight – Friday night – we have had four more classic hymns, which tonight were introduced by the people who chose them, telling the stories of the hymns themselves, and the personal stories of how they became important to them. During the week I have introduced ideas from the Old Testament and the New Testament, where God in the Old Testament is Yahweh, ‘the ground of all being’, and Elohim, ‘the sum of all that is divine’, and in the New Testament is the The Crucified God, and the loving father, and the holy spirit – God everywhere. The festival week has been Hornby at its very best: a festival of culture, history, poetry, music and faith, amazing weather, and a full church every evening, all celebrating the ongoing life of this church and this community. Join us this August for Parish Communion any Sunday at 10.45am or any of our other regular services and activities – including the service that has our growing little Sunday School running alongside it at 10.45am on 11 August and again on 8 September.

Claughton Parish Council Vacancies There are currently 2 vacancies for Councillors on Claughton Parish Council and a vacancy for the post of Parish Clerk is also pending. Unless volunteers come forward to fill these vacancies by the end of the year, it seems most likely that the council will have to cease due to lack of support. The Parish Council meets at 8pm on a Monday in Claughton Village Hall four times a year – or as re-quired when matters of particular local interest arise. The job of Councillor in a Parish of this size is not onerous but can make a positive difference to local residents. The post of Clerk is also quite straightfor-ward and does pay a modest sum.

IT COURSES Our Beginner IT course is scheduled to start again on Friday, 1STNovember. It has been designed to help people with no experience of computing, as well as those with some knowledge but who need a confidence boost or refresher on Microsoft Office packages. The programme runs for 8 weeks, with each session lasting 2½ hours, and costs £90. This is significantly cheaper than similar courses at colleges in Lancaster, yet all tuition is provided by a fully qualified IT Teacher. As it is the run up to Christmas, we could also run a Microsoft Publisher workshop for those wanting to design and produce per-sonalised Christmas cards or calendars. We would need to get a feel for how many people might be interested, so please get in touch. Rotary club Of Lunesdale. The past 3 months have been busy, varied and enjoyable. Weekly meetings have provided a mixed schedule of speakers, outings to other Rotary Clubs and other venues. Speakers in-cluded, for example, Joe Prendergast, Headmaster of Wenning Hall School, an inspirational speaker. A bowls evening at Arkholme with Carnforth was played in the spirit of friendly rivalry followed by a visit into the Bay Horse Inn for chips and sandwiches. One Rotarian kindly of-fered his home and stunning garden as the setting for a very pleasant relaxed and informal evening at which a meal of Kentucky fried chicken and fries was on the menu. Several mem-bers joined with the Rotarians of Kirkham and Rural Fylde at Ribby Hall Village. After dinner at the hotel Rotarians were totally absorbed by a fascinating presentation from retired Police Detective Superintendent Mick Gradwell about the tragedy of the cockle pickers in More-cambe Bay. In the coming weeks we shall have a stand at The Lunesdale Show where we look forward to meeting old and new friends. In September the club is very happy to support a day visit to Kirkby Lonsdale by a group of young children who will be in this country for a month from Belarus as guests of the charity “The Friends of the Children of Chernobyl”. Update:
The festival is now just a matter of weeks away and everything is falling into
place. The schedule of classes and entry forms will soon be available from local newsagents and
post offices so make sure you grab a copy and find a class that tickles your fancy. There are
children's crafts, cookery, horticulture, eggs, poultry and flower arranging. Make sure you get
your entries in by the 12th August as this year we wont be able to accept entries on the day.
Other attractions now include: willow weaving, have-a-go long bow archery, snail racing, den
making, trade stands, a dog show, black smith demonstrations, gate making, bee keeping, Morris
men and hopefully a spot of duck herding to boot. For children there will a bouncy castle and
other rides or games as well as a retro ice-cream van and, of course, a sweet stall.
