August 2013 Notable anniversaries and dates for your
diaries
2
1st August is Lammas Day and, in bygone times was celebrated in Britain as Thanksgiving for the
harvest.
The name comes from an Anglo-Saxon word Hlafmaesse, which means Loaf Mass. The festival of
Lammas marked the beginning of the harvest, when people would go to church to give thanks for the
first corn to be cut. This celebration predates our Christian harvest festival.
On Lammas Day farmers made loaves of bread from the new wheat crop and gave them to their local
church. They were then used as the Communion bread during a special mass thanking God for the
harvest. The custom ended when Henry VIII broke away from the Catholic Church, and nowadays we
have harvest festivals at the end of the season. Michaelmas Day (September 29) is traditionally the last
day of the harvest season.
Lammas Day used to be a time for foretelling marriages and trying out partners. Two young people
would agree to a "trial marriage" lasting the period of the fair (usually 11 days) to see whether they
were really suited for wedlock. At the end of the fair, if they didn't get on, the couple could part.
Lammas was also the time for farmers to give their farm
workers a present of a pair of gloves. In Exeter, a large
white glove is put on the end of a long pole which was
decorated with flowers and held on high to let people
know that the merriment of Lammas Fair was
beginning.
Lammas Superstition
To bring good luck, farmers would let the first corn bread go stale and then crumble it over the corners
of their barns.

Hornby-with-Farleton Parish Council – July 2013 Meeting The Clerk was asked to contact the Highways Dept re gulley cleaning. No objections were raised against the planning application for the erection of an agricultural building on Scale House Lane. It was noted what good use has been made of the Rota Bounce in the playground. Unfortunately, the issue of litter in the playground was also mentioned, as this has become a problem. Comments were made about the excellent job the Lengthsman has made of clipping down the Wenning side of the river. A discussion was held regarding the management of verges in the village. This revolved around whether the verges should be cut or not. Leaving the verges un-cut could possibly encourage more pollinating insects to the area. However, the verges would still need managing. More detailed minutes will be available in the folder in the Institute, once approved at the next meeting. There will not be a meeting in August unless any urgent items come up. Agendas will be displayed in the parish notice boards should a meeting be necessary. Therefore the next Parish Council meeting is expected to take place on Thursday, 12th September 2013, at 7:45pm in Hornby Institute. Agendas will be displayed in the parish notice boards on Sunday 8th September. Mrs. Tizzie Massey (Clerk) [email protected]

Saint Margaret’s Festival, 14-20 July
I am writing (for the Contact deadline) at the end of Friday in Festival week – and what a week it has been, with the centre aisles of the church full, and the side aisles filling up, every evening for six consecutive hot sunny evenings. The Festival opened on Sunday night with a delightful musical evening based on the Psalms, and led by the combined choirs of Saint Margaret’s, Saint Mary’s, and the Hornby Choral Society: a superb opening for the week. Fr Luiz of Saint Mary’s, Hornby, opened the weekday programme on Monday with a superb unscripted address, discussing the tower in its 500th years as an enduring work of art that speaks afresh to each new generation – concluding with the eightEsided tower pointing us upwards to “the eighth day, God’s eternal day”. Andrew White’s delightful introduction to the history of the tower and the church on Tuesday was not all stones and architects, but local characters and folklore over centuries, and their links to national and international events. On another warm evening, Christine Burn opened an evening of poetry on Wednesday with four poems by local poet David Tait, and after an introduction to ‘the diverse collection of literature that we call the bible’, there was more poetry – from Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Philippians and Revelation. On Thursday, a hundred people gathered to hear Sam Ashton perform five delightful Betjeman poems, and I also concluded quoting Betjeman: “And is it true ... that God was man in Palestine, and lives today in bread and wine?” And finally tonight – Friday night – we have had four more classic hymns, which tonight were introduced by the people who chose them, telling the stories of the hymns themselves, and the personal stories of how they became important to them. During the week I have introduced ideas from the Old Testament and the New Testament, where God in the Old Testament is Yahweh, ‘the ground of all being’, and Elohim, ‘the sum of all that is divine’, and in the New Testament is the The Crucified God, and the loving father, and the holy spirit – God everywhere. The festival week has been Hornby at its very best: a festival of culture, history, poetry, music and faith, amazing weather, and a full church every evening, all celebrating the ongoing life of this church and this community. Join us this August for Parish Communion any Sunday at 10.45am or any of our other regular services and activities – including the service that has our growing little Sunday School running alongside it at 10.45am on 11 August and again on 8 September.

Claughton Parish Council Vacancies There are currently 2 vacancies for Councillors on Claughton Parish Council and a vacancy for the post of Parish Clerk is also pending. Unless volunteers come forward to fill these vacancies by the end of the year, it seems most likely that the council will have to cease due to lack of support. The Parish Council meets at 8pm on a Monday in Claughton Village Hall four times a year – or as re-quired when matters of particular local interest arise. The job of Councillor in a Parish of this size is not onerous but can make a positive difference to local residents. The post of Clerk is also quite straightfor-ward and does pay a modest sum.
If you live in Claughton and would like to contribute to your local community by becoming a Parish
Councillor, or if you would like to take on the role of Parish Clerk (regardless of where you live) please
contact Caroline at [email protected] or on 015242 22162.

VICTORIA INSTITUTE, CATON
IT COURSES Our Beginner IT course is scheduled to start again on Friday, 1STNovember. It has been designed to help people with no experience of computing, as well as those with some knowledge but who need a confidence boost or refresher on Microsoft Office packages. The programme runs for 8 weeks, with each session lasting 2½ hours, and costs £90. This is significantly cheaper than similar courses at colleges in Lancaster, yet all tuition is provided by a fully qualified IT Teacher. As it is the run up to Christmas, we could also run a Microsoft Publisher workshop for those wanting to design and produce per-sonalised Christmas cards or calendars. We would need to get a feel for how many people might be interested, so please get in touch. Queries for either course to Judy on 01524 771733 - for those already on the waiting list, Judy will phone you. PHOTOCOPYING AND INTERNET SERVICES The IT Room and Drop In services are available in the Victoria Institute. We have com-puters with Internet access, and a ‘multi-function’ printer which also serves as a photo-copier, scanner, and fax. Paper sizes A4 and A3 can be printed or copied in mono and full colour. Fairtrade tea and coffee are served, and local newspapers always available for browsing. We are open between 9.30 and 3.30, Monday to Friday. Please phone 01524 771733 if you have any queries.

HORNBY HELPLINE
What is Helpline?
Helpline is a group of about 50 people who live in Hornby & Farleton who have volunteered to
help anyone living in the 2 villages with any problems they may encounter. Anyone can use it, not
just the infirm or those who are older.
However we do not want to take away the business of paid workmen so we cannot undertake
certain jobs.
The volunteers give their services without payment, but if costs are incurred the client obviously
has to reimburse them. So, for example, we charge 30p per mile for petrol costs. This just covers
the cost of petrol but not ‘wear & tear’.
The volunteers say what sort of jobs they would be willing to do & a log is kept of their offers.
Thus when there is a request for a lift to hospital we find a person who has signed up for transport,
whilst a request for moving a bulky item would be picked up by someone who had opted for ‘odd
jobs’.
How is Helpline operated?
The client phones or calls at the Institute between 10.00 & 12.00 on Monday – Saturday to give
their request to the Manager on Duty or the Reception Staff Volunteers. This request is logged &
telephoned on to the appropriate Helpline Coordinator who is on duty that week. (There are 7
coordinators - K.Helme, J Lloyd, A Somers, A Griffiths, C. Smith, A Grundy & C. Collins.)
The coordinator consults the log of voluntary work offered by the Volunteers & phones around
until one of them is found form that specific task. The volunteer then phones the client to inform
them that they are to be the helper & to arrange exact details & times.
After the job is completed the volunteer reports back to the coordinator on how the job went &
how long it took. These details are sent to Age Concern who fund insurance for the volunteers.
What can Helpline do for me?
We cannot keep a complete list of all that could possibly be asked for, but we have volunteers who
have signed up for:
Odd jobs/ home repairs Strong hand Basic computing Pet care
Care of Elderly Help with Children Providing break for carer Transport
Gardening Basic Housework Shopping After Hospital Help Visiting
Collecting Prescriptions Sewing alterations & Mending.
(I am afraid that I must add one minor detail here – As everybody is a volunteer, we cannot
promise to undertake every request. A very few could just be beyond our remit. We must never
make our volunteers feel that they have been asked to do more than they signed up for.)
So……………..If you are lucky enough to live in Hornby or Farleton, & if you ever have anything
that our group of volunteers could help you with, just phone 22227 Monday to Saturday & a team
of about 50 very kind people are ready to help. Don’t feel embarrassed to ask. There are things that
I myself have asked for help with.

August in the Garden
A ugust is usually one of the hottest months of the year -
making watering essential. Try to use grey water wherever
possible, especially as water butts may be running low if
it has been a dry summer. August is traditionally holiday-
time, so you might need to enlist the help of friends and family to
look after the garden while you are away.
Top 10 jobs this month
1. Prune Wisteria
2. Don’t delay summer pruning restricted fruits
3. Deadhead flowering plants regularly
4. Watering! Particularly containers, and new plants - preferably
with grey recycled water or stored rainwater
5. Collect seed from favourite plants
6. Harvest sweetcorn and other vegetables as they become ready
7. Continue cutting out old fruited canes on raspberries
8. Lift and pot up rooted strawberry runners
9. Keep ponds and water features topped up
10. Feed the soil with green manures

Rotary club Of Lunesdale. The past 3 months have been busy, varied and enjoyable. Weekly meetings have provided a mixed schedule of speakers, outings to other Rotary Clubs and other venues. Speakers in-cluded, for example, Joe Prendergast, Headmaster of Wenning Hall School, an inspirational speaker. A bowls evening at Arkholme with Carnforth was played in the spirit of friendly rivalry followed by a visit into the Bay Horse Inn for chips and sandwiches. One Rotarian kindly of-fered his home and stunning garden as the setting for a very pleasant relaxed and informal evening at which a meal of Kentucky fried chicken and fries was on the menu. Several mem-bers joined with the Rotarians of Kirkham and Rural Fylde at Ribby Hall Village. After dinner at the hotel Rotarians were totally absorbed by a fascinating presentation from retired Police Detective Superintendent Mick Gradwell about the tragedy of the cockle pickers in More-cambe Bay. In the coming weeks we shall have a stand at The Lunesdale Show where we look forward to meeting old and new friends. In September the club is very happy to support a day visit to Kirkby Lonsdale by a group of young children who will be in this country for a month from Belarus as guests of the charity “The Friends of the Children of Chernobyl”. Contact for the club is [email protected]

Aughton Pudding Festival: Bank Holiday Monday August 26th 2013 www.aughtonpudding.co.uk
Update:
The festival is now just a matter of weeks away and everything is falling into
place. The schedule of classes and entry forms will soon be available from local newsagents and
post offices so make sure you grab a copy and find a class that tickles your fancy. There are
children's crafts, cookery, horticulture, eggs, poultry and flower arranging. Make sure you get
your entries in by the 12th August as this year we wont be able to accept entries on the day.
Other attractions now include: willow weaving, have-a-go long bow archery, snail racing, den
making, trade stands, a dog show, black smith demonstrations, gate making, bee keeping, Morris
men and hopefully a spot of duck herding to boot. For children there will a bouncy castle and
other rides or games as well as a retro ice-cream van and, of course, a sweet stall.
More information will be posted on aughtonpudding.co.uk—and don’t forget to like us on
Facebook!
