“Students’ behaviour is outstanding” with attainment, “consistently, significantly above

average” says OFSTED, as Willingdon Community School is graded a very “good school”.

“Outstanding” for behaviour and safety of students leads the headlines of our excellent inspection report.

Under the new tougher inspection regime introduced by the government in September, Willingdon Community School has been judged as a “good” school with several outstanding features, including being given an overall judgement for behaviour and safety of “outstanding”. The report finds no major weaknesses within the school, with each of the 5 judgements being good or better. I am delighted that the report confirms the work of the school in such a positive fashion and leaves us well placed to continue to raise standards.

The attached report, also available on the school website, is full of praise from the inspectors

who comment frequently on the quality of many aspects of outstanding practice. Attainment is judged to be “consistently, significantly above average”, with “the progress of lower achieving student groups rising at a good rate”. In addition they comment that “More able students make particularly good progress”.

Teaching and learning is judged to be good with an “increasing proportion that is outstanding” Staff are judged to have “high expectations” of students. The school is judged to be doing “a good job in ensuring different groups of students achieve well, reflecting its determination to include all”. Teachers are described as ensuring there is “lively atmosphere for learning. They are enthusiastic, knowledgeable, enjoy positive

relationships with students and create a climate where students say it is ’OK to do well’”.

The report on behaviour states that, “Students’ behaviour is outstanding and that students feel very safe at school…the great majority are polite and courteous to staff and each other”. It goes on to describe the students as being, “keen to learn. They arrive punctually to lessons, follow expected routines naturally and contribute strongly to their own learning”. They are also described as being “an exceptionally harmonious group, with positive relationships very much in evidence”. Inspectors said that feedback from students confirmed that they “were keen to say how much they enjoyed attending the school and how safe they felt while there”. Inclusion was judged to be “at the heart of the school”. Feedback from parents was equally complimentary, with the inspectors reporting that, “Alongside praising the quality of academic provision, parents are very happy with

their children’s wider personal development”.On leadership and management, Inspectors reported that the school is, “Led very effectively” and that leaders “are highly ambitious for further improvement”. The curriculum is described as being “of good quality with some outstanding features”. On governance, the inspectors said that governors are ”committed to (the school’s) further development and (they) know the school well”.

This is an excellent report and I am delighted that the hard work of governors, staff and students, with the invaluable support of parents, has been justly recognised by Ofsted. Areas requiring further development were few in number and had already been identified by the school. As the report says “Accurate self-evaluation gives (leaders) a clear understanding of strengths and where the school’s work can be improved”. My thanks go out to the many parents who contacted inspectors to offer their support for the work of the school and to

the students who contribute so much to the learning and harmonious atmosphere we deem so important. One inspector said during the inspection that he had never before had so many doors opened for him by students or so many courteous greetings from a student body: key features of our Personal Excellence programme.

I must however finish by thanking all my staff who work so tirelessly day in and day out. This report is testimony to that commitment and dedication.

New table tennis equipment!Sport England has awarded Willingdon Community School a grant towards developing the sport of table tennis at the school. The PE Department has developed a project to help boost the number of younger players participating in the sport at Willingdon. The grant has been used to purchase 8 indoor tables, 3 outdoor tables, bats and balls to be used during lessons, break and lunchtimes, enrich-ment clubs and inter school competitions.

Sport England’s Regional Lead for East Sussex, said “athletes of all abilities need the right equipment so that they can take up a sport, play and compete to their full potential. The new equipment at Willingdon Community School will really help to get more students taking up table tennis”.

Free School Meals

A recent survey from the School Food Trust suggests that one in five families likely to qualify for free school meals were unaware whether they would be eligible. The School Food Trust, which promotes healthier school meals, says this means that families are missing out on benefits worth about £700 per year. Your child may be entitled to receive free school meals if you are entitled to receive one or more of the following:

• Income Support (IS);• Income Based Jobseekers Allowance (IBJSA);• An income-related employment and support allowance;• Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999• Child Tax Credit, provided they are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual income (as assessed by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs) that does not exceed £16,190;• Working Tax Credit 'run-on' - the payment someone may receive for a further four weeks after they stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit.

How to apply

You can download the free school meals application form viahttp://www.eastsussex.gov.uk/educationandlearning/schools/meals/free/default.htm

Or via the “Directgov” website which helps you to find out information on the application process in your area. Simply enter your post code and follow the link to your Local Authority:http://local.direct.gov.uk/LDGRedirect/index.jsp?LGSL=4&LGIL=0

Alternatively, contact the school reception, who will be able to give you an application form.

Eric Moore, Founding Headteacher of Willingdon School.

It is with great regret that I inform you that, Eric Moore, the first Headteacher of Willingdon School died peacefully on October 14th – one week short of his 98th birthday.

Eric was a mathematician and achieved his MSc at Sheffield University. He became Headteacher at Willingdon in 1956 setting up the school from its inception and remaining here until his retirement in 1975. The school was opened by Lord Hailsham and started with only 200 students, compared with the 986 we have today. During his time as headteacher the school developed a strong reputation for high standards, good pastoral care and a com-mitment to the wider community.

His wife Hannah (who died in 1999) taught Science for some years at the school.

His thanksgiving service will be held at 12noon on 26th October at

Holy Trinity ChurchChurch RoadClaygateSurrey KT 10 0JP

If you would like to send a message to his family, then please do contact the school and we will pass it on.
