A Message From The Co-Ceos Jeff Bujer & Abbe Land

Just over a year ago, we ushered in the promise of health care reform when the Affordable Care Act was signed into law. Though full reform is still years away, many, including patients and community clinics, are already seeing positive impacts.

Contact is a quarterly newsletter of The Saban Free Clinic, a nonprofit

organization providing free health care and social services to people in need.

Written and edited by the Development Department

Shannon Cisch Director of Development

Angela Preston Communications and Marketing Manager

For information, call (323) 330-1670 or email [email protected]

A major piece of the reform is the increase in grant dollars to the Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) program, which is a Federal program for safety net providers of primary and preventive health care services to underserved populations under Section 330 of the Public Health Service Act. The increase in the Federally Qualified Health Center Program created an opportunity for non-FQHC community clinics to apply for 330 funding. With the support of the Board, the Clinic submitted its application for FQHC funding in December. Meanwhile, at the start of 2011, the Clinic received the good news that the application to receive Federally Qualified Health Center Look-Alike (FQHC LA) status was approved.

The decision to pursue FQHC funding is in line with the Clinic’s mission statement and strategic directions, which focus on the medical home model. What is a medical home? A medical home is very much what it sounds like, a place where an individual or a family can receive comprehensive primary and preventive services as well as coordination of specialty care. A medical home provides a strong partnership between the provider and patient in all their health care needs. Applying a medical home model ensures our patients receive the best quality care they need.

Integral to all the change happening at the Clinic, we will continue to plan for the implementation of an electronic health records system, another key piece of health care reform.

Through all the change, the Clinic is more committed than ever to ensure all patients feel welcome, comfortable and cared for every time they step through the Clinic’s doors.

Look for more updates in the coming months on the Clinic’s progress, and thank you as always for your support.

Message From The Board President Stanley M. Toy, Jr., M.D.

In my work with The Saban Free Clinic over the years, I have witnessed and been proud to be a part of its evolutionary process to become an organization best positioned to face the multitude of changes and challenges to come. I have been so impressed by the many individuals, from patients to staff to board members, who have consistently shown a level of commitment to the Clinic’s success that is worthy of praise.

At the end of last year, the Clinic applied to become a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). This decision showed yet again the Clinic’s willingness to evolve and change in order to meet the needs of its patients. Becoming an FQHC will strengthen and grow the health care services and programs the Clinic provides, and positions the Clinic for other funding opportunities. As part of the application process, the Clinic changed the composition of its Board of Directors. Previously, 23 members of the community served on the Board. Today, it is comprised of 11 members, 51% of whom are consumers of the Clinic’s services.

Eleven former Board of Directors members will remain active as part of the Board of Trustees. They will continue to lend their expertise in an advisory capacity by sitting on Board committees and attending the monthly Board meetings.

Four of the newest Board of Directors were recruited from the Community Advisory Board (CAB). The CAB is a committee of patients who graciously volunteer their time and efforts to improve the overall patient experience at the Clinic. They meet three times per year with members of the Clinic’s Board, executive and management staff to provide feedback on Clinic policies, procedures and guidelines, as well as share their experiences as a patient. I recently participated in a CAB meeting. I left the meeting grateful for the invaluable input each of the members brought to the table and the strong collaboration between the patients, Clinic staff and Board Members to resolve issues presented.

With your continued support, the Clinic Executive Team, the Board of Directors and Board of Trustees will strategically lead the Clinic through the many exciting changes with health care reform in the coming years. We all remain as dedicated as ever to guaranteeing the Clinic continues its mission to providing care.

It was the many generous in-kind and financial donations from members of the community, including Karl Pettijohn, Martha Henderson, and Focus on Children Now, who made an impact in the lives of the adults, teens and children at the party. The event would not be possible without the steadfast dedication of Friends Board Member Marcia Steere, creator of this event. Thanks to her efforts from the planning of the event to recruiting the tireless support of Roz Boulianne, John Carlucci, Erin and Mark Centanni, Kathy and Mark Fogel, Susan Gottfurcht, Carol Irvin, Ellen Monblatt, Macki Singer, Harry Steere, Karen Sterling and Maddy Zimring, the Patient Holiday Party is always an afternoon enjoyed by all. The Clinic would also like to acknowledge the continued support of Jonathan Chu. Over the years, he has graciously given much of his time and donated food for the event.

In October 2010, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation granted $2,500 in support of the Clinic’s HIV/AIDS Prevention Education and Outreach Program. The program promotes education, intervention and prevention of HIV infection, and strives to direct HIV-infected individuals to care and treatment. The Clinic’s Education and Outreach Department works hard to break down cultural, ethnic and gender-based barriers in reluctant populations, providing important preventive and health education to those at risk for HIV infection. The Clinic also provides direct services and helps patients with referrals to available community resources. Between January 1 and December 31, 2010, the Clinic counseled and tested 2,773 patients for HIV/AIDS.

Thank you to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation for recognizing the community’s need for this vital program. The funding from the grant will help ensure greater HIV/AIDS prevention and education for our patients throughout the community.

Last year, The Saban Free Clinic was awarded a service grant by the Taproot Foundation, which pairs local non-profits with teams of professionals who volunteer their time and skills to help organizations address specific needs. The service grant enabled the Clinic to develop its first-ever Patient Services Handbook, a much-needed resource.

The handbook clearly communicates helpful tips on how patients can best use the services and programs available at the Clinic. In addition, the handbook includes a comprehensive listing of all the services provided and the hours for each of the Clinic’s locations. The contents are all enclosed within a well-designed pocket folder with which patients can place additional forms and literature relevant to their Clinic visits and health care needs. The Clinic began to distribute the handbooks to patients at the beginning of this year at all sites.

The Clinic is grateful for all the time, effort and dedication each of the project volunteers, Jacqui Genow, Laurie Hughes, Thomas Humphreys, Michael Jaye and Thomas Philp, provided

to the project. They delivered a thoroughly useful and professional-quality product that the Clinic is proud to distribute to its patients. The Clinic also thanks Erica Williams, Taproot Foundation program manager, for her supervision of the project and team.

Members of the WME Entertainment team surprised several deserving families with a heartfelt welcome and a bountiful array of holiday gifts. Friends Board Member Cori Wellins Lagao led the efforts to gather the gifts from employees at WME Entertainment and her friends, in addition to donating a number of items herself.

With her colleagues at WME Entertainment, including Friends Board Member Richard Weitz, she encouraged them by sharing the stories of the families and by creating a little friendly internal competition. “The goal was to make this a fun and meaningful experience for my colleagues,” said Cori Wellins Lagao. “I was overwhelmed by the outpouring of items and the sheer generosity of everyone who participated. The most rewarding part was meeting the families and seeing the joy on their faces when they received with the gifts.”

Each family received gifts tailored specifically to them based on the ages of the children and their needs. Items included sports equipment, board games, bicycles, clothing, toiletries and gift cards. This is the third time that Cori has coordinated this donation of gifts. We thank her for her incredible donation and her dedication to making the holiday season special and memorable for these families.

The Saban Free Clinic’s 16th Annual Golf Classic will take place on Monday, June 27th at the renowned El Caballero Country Club. Every year, the tournament raises hundreds of thousands of dollars to help fund the nearly 90,000 patient visits the Clinic provides to the uninsured and needy in the Los Angeles Community. The Clinic is pleased to honor Patrick Whitesell, Co-CEO, WME Entertainment. Mr. Whitesell’s illustrious career as a talent agent began more than 20 years ago. One of today’s most prominent talent agents, Mr. Whitesell’s current clients include Ben Affleck, Jessica Alba, Christian Bale, Matt Damon, Jennifer Garner, Denzel Washington, Hugh Jackman, Jude Law, Ellen Page, Joaquin Phoenix, Kevin Costner and Pearl Jam. He joined Endeavor as a partner in February 2001, where he was a member of the company’s Executive Committee and was instrumental in shaping Endeavor’s June 2009 merger with the William Morris Agency.

“It is such a privilege to be selected as this year’s Golf Classic honoree by The Saban Free Clinic. I hold the utmost respect for the organization and the vital services it provides to the community,” noted Mr.

Whitesell.

The Annual Golf Classic will be chaired by Irving Azoff, Andy Friendly and David T. Friendly, joined by co-chairs John Frankenheimer, Peter Grosslight, Ted Harbert, Marcia Steere and Andrea Wong.

Players will start the day with a continental breakfast, followed by a shotgun start at noon. The day concludes with dinner and an awards ceremony.

Taking a shower or just being able to clean up every day is something most of us take for granted. For thousands of men and women who are living on the streets it is a luxury that is often unavailable. Thankfully, The Saban Free Clinic provides free access to a shower on a walk-in basis at two of its locations; the Beverly Health Center and S. Mark Taper Foundation Health Center in Hollywood. The Clinic is the only agency in the Hollywood-Wilshire area to provide this much needed service.

Murad Skincare answered the Clinic’s Shower Program call for products, generously donating and delivering hundreds of its premium doctor-branded skincare products. Clients of the Clinic can now use Murad body washes, facial cleansers, sunscreens, lip balms, moisturizers, kits with sample-sized and hotel products and more. Many thanks to Murad for the donation in support of The Saban Free Clinic’s Shower Program.

The Clinic relies on the generosity of companies like Murad, as well as organizations and individuals, to provide the supplies to sustain the shower program. The Clinic accepts all toiletries, including soap, body wash, shampoo,
