Board of Trustees Board of Trustees

Whether you are new to Lawrence, have lived your whole life here, or somewhere in between, I invite you to take a few moments, sit back, relax and enjoy this Spe-cial 40th Anniversary Edition of CONTACT. We live in a hurried world but, it’s im-portant to reflect on our past to appreciate our present and improve our future. Forty years ago, in 1972, a group of dedicated parents and community volunteers began Cottonwood, Inc.—a place that would provide meaningful options for adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD). We owe so much to their fore-sight and commitment. You can follow the history of Cottonwood on pages 4-5.

This past six months has been dominated by our efforts to advocate for “carving out” long-term waiver services for persons with I/DD in Kansas from KanCare, the state’s man-aged care proposal. You can see some of our advocacy efforts on page 12. Recently, there has been some movement on delaying implementation of KanCare for those with I/DD until 2014. We will continue to advocate for a “carve out” of services and encour-age voters to write to the Governor and your legislators asking them to do the same.

Enjoy this edition of the CONTACT.

I was impressed at the overwhelming support from our community and how well organized and meaningful the work program operated. I joined the Cottonwood Foundation Board because I wanted to be part of an incredible organization mak-ing a difference in the lives of people with disabilities and the entire community.”

Opportunities to shape the futureThe Cottonwood Foundation is a separate but affiliated 501 (c) (3) non –profit organization established to facilitate the contribution of funds for the benefit of Cottonwood, Inc. The Cottonwood Foundation plays a key role in providing funding for the organization by helping to provide for some of the special needs of individuals served by Cottonwood, Inc. With increased competition for limited philanthropic funds, gifts have become even more critical to helping ensure a long, healthy future for Cottonwood, Inc. Contributions to the Cottonwood Foundation can be made in a number of ways, including cash, securities, real estate and personal property, life insurance, retirement plans, in-kind gifts, and planned gifts through a will or trust. Each contribution makes a difference and helps ensure the future of Cottonwood. The Cottonwood Founda-tion is a charitable organization, and gifts are tax deductible. For more information about Cottonwood, Inc. as well as the Cottonwood Foundation, visit www.cwood.org. “ In all of my jobs, in all of my busi-ness negotiations, in all parts of the world, the skills I acquired at Cot-tonwood as a DSP (Direct Support Professional), and later as a Resi-dential Coordinator, was the best foundation I could ever have had. I use those problem solving, negotia-tion, and coordination skills every single day. It has served me well.”

-Brad Bloom(Early 80’s)

Vice President of Sales Pollack Design Company

“I have spent most of my working life in Lawrence and was able to own a business here for thirty five years. I was very for-tunate to have good employees over those many years. I have worked at Cottonwood for two and half years and still can’t be-lieve how totally dedicated the employees are to the Cottonwood mission. I enjoy coming to work each day to be a small part of it.”

-Don Nunley(2010- Present)

JobLink

“We packaged cat & dog food at Quaker Oats. I don’t like dogs because they bark too much. I worked for Stan at the doughnut shop and I liked doing that!”

-Judy Reichart- Consumer(1976-Present)

“ I remember the green bus picking me up at home and bringing me to Cottonwood. We cleaned up theaters and hotels. We

made dog beds—I still have one. We worked from 9-2.”

-Milissa Hicklin- Consumer(1975- Present)

It certainly seems like these last 40 years have gone by very fast! Cot-tonwood has seen a lot of changes over time. A community facility serv-ing around 25 individuals, in the day program, has grown to a facility meeting the needs of over 180 on-site. Over this time there has also been a significant increase in the variety of services offered through Cotton-

wood. The Cottonwood "building footprint" on 31st street has increased as well from 8,000 sq. feet to over 66,000 sq. feet today. Cottonwood has truly been blessed with the various staff, consumers, parents and board members that have had the opportunity to share in the Cottonwood experience. It has indeed been a blessing to have been able to share in this experience with so many wonderful individuals!

-JR Condra(1974-Present)

Director of Cottonwood Industries

“Cottonwood turns 40! I started shortly after the 16th anniversary, and while much has changed, I think it’s more remark-

able to see what has remained the same. Cottonwood was built on a solid foundation of vision & values, and we’ve not strayed when trends point in other directions. The con-sistency in leadership is a testa-ment, not only to the dedication of professionals choosing this field, but also to the quality of Cotton-wood’s culture. The fact that Cot-tonwood’s leadership continues to promote the ideals of independence, inclusion & work, even when it is less profitable, should make all of the people we serve, staff, fami-lies, and the community proud!”

-Phil Bentzinger(1988-1992)

(1995- Present)Director of JobLink

Happy 40th Anniversary Cottonwood! I remember one Saturday in the mid 80’s when we successfully moved 13 Residential consumers with about 8 staff and 2 pick ups. We started wtih one consumer and just “dominoed” down the list until the last person’s stuff was moved. One third floor apartment proved especially challenging but with a few ropes and some leverage we lowered heavy furniture out the balcony.

Oh what the folly of youth and an apparent high risk tolerance can accomplish!-Jill Baker

(1976-Present)Administrator of Services

“The thing I remember (and valued) most was the opportunity to work with an agency that always placed the people we supported first. The lesson learned was that nothing happens without a strong team of people who have the same vision and purpose.”

Parents, families, consum-ers, staff and other members of the community advocated to “carve out” DD long-term services from the Adminis-tration’s KanCare program. KanCare is the Governor’s plan to curb Medicaid spend-ing by shifting all of Medicaid funded services to three for-profit out-of-state insurance companies. Cottonwood, Inc. hosted a public forum and several letter writing events so that people could express their concerns to the Admin-istration and the Legislators. 56 persons, staff and persons served also participated in PUSH Day at the state Capi-tol in Topeka on April 25.
