Ceo And BoARd pResidentThanks to your generous support, this year The Saban Free Clinic has had 93,000 patient visits, serving nearly 22,000 uninsured men, women, and children from throughout Los Angeles. Your donations made it possible for our doctors, nurses, staff, and volunteers to improve our community’s health and give families peace of mind. We’re proud of the impact we’ve made together.

This year, we also celebrate the Clinic’s newly earned designation as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). This means we’re now able to provide care to more Los Angeles families and deliver on the promise of health care reform. Being an FQHC also means we’re raising the bar. Read page 7 of this issue to see how we’re improving our patients’ health outcomes with extended services, a team approach, and better quality care.

However, even as we enter a new era in health care in 2014, your partnership will remain crucial. The unfortunate reality is that many in our community will remain uninsured because they won’t qualify for, or be able to afford, health coverage the government provides. Mothers, fathers, and their children will continue to depend on this Clinic to get physical exams, dental care, well baby care, mental wellness, and other preventive services. We will not shut our doors on them.

You give because you want to make a positive impact in the lives of those who need it the most. With your generosity, let’s continue the legacy we started in 1967, and ensure our community has fair and equal access to quality health care. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Bujer Lisa Gritzner CEO, The Saban Free Clinic Board President, The Saban Free Clinic

CoMBAtinG tHe stiGMA of HiV testinGThe Saban Free Clinic has provided low-income men and women from throughout Los Angeles with voluntary HIV/AIDS screenings since 1980. Now, thanks to grant partnerships with Gilead Sciences and other partners, all Clinic patients ages 13–64 will receive a free HIV screening with their routine medical care, unless they decline.

One in five people living with HIV/AIDS in the U.S. do not know they are infected, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This means that many are transmitting the virus to others without knowing it.

The Clinic aims to reduce the stigma associated with HIV testing by making it as routine as cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, or cancer screenings. This new approach at each of our four sites shifts HIV screenings from a standalone model to one that is integrated into our clinical practice. In doing so, more men and women will become aware of their HIV status, whether positive or negative, and we’ll be able to inform patients of effective treatment options to control the virus.

dinneR GAlA RAises $1.5 Million to Benefit pAtientsThe Saban Free Clinic raised over $1.5 million at The 36th Annual Dinner Gala on November 19, 2012 at The Beverly Hilton. Funds will help the Clinic provide medical, dental, behavioral health and social services for underserved and uninsured patients in Los Angeles County. ABC Entertainment Group President Paul Lee received the Clinic’s Leadership Award. Bob Broder received the Lenny Somberg Award for his tireless dedication and generosity towards the Clinic over the years. Emmy-award winning co-creator of ABC’s Modern Family, Steve Levitan, presented the award to Lee, and Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom presented the award to Broder.

Emmy-award winners Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell of Modern Family hosted, with comedy by Jimmy Kimmel, and a performance by singer-songwriter Aimee Mann. Emily VanCamp of ABC’s Revenge presented a video featuring Cheryl Saban. It highlighted female patients whose care at the Clinic illustrates its commitment to health care for women at a time when access has become more limited and challenging.

The Saban Free Clinic is deeply grateful to the generous commitment of Dinner Chairs Ellen Hoberman, Tom Hoberman, Kevin Reilly and Tony Pritzker, and Honorary Dinner Chairs Peter Roth, Mark Thompson and Dana Walden.

We would like to thank our presenting sponsors for their generous support:

The holiday season was made a little brighter with warmth and good cheer for more than 500 Clinic patients who attended the 23rd Annual Patient Holiday Party on Thursday, December 13, 2012.

With the steadfast dedication of Friends Board Member Marcia Steere, the Patient Holiday Party is always an afternoon enjoyed by all. The many generous in-kind and financial donations from members of the community made an incredible difference in the lives of the adults, teens and children who attended the party. A special thank you to Karl Pettijohn, Martha Henderson, Pam Pierson and Roslyn Boulianne for their continued dedication and support.

This year’s attendees enjoyed a delicious hot lunch of chicken fried rice donated by Jonathan Chu of Buddha’s Belly, pizza donated by Kathy Fogel as well as lasagna, salad and rolls donated by Pam Pierson and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. All of the patients who attended went home with essential items, including warm clothes, toiletries, books, blankets and toys. It was a joyful afternoon full of holiday spirit.

Thank you to the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood for providing the venue; hard working volunteers, who helped make this event possible for our patients; and every donor who helped make this event truly special!

A sAfety net foR tRACy GReenTracy Green was enjoying a perfectly healthy and happy life – she had a good job working for an attorney, was an avid runner and enjoyed spending time with her children. Life took an unexpected turn for the worse for Tracy when her boss suddenly passed away. She was without income, had difficulty finding a new job, eventually she lost her house and moved in with one of her kids. Then Tracy began to feel severe pain in her hands and feet.

“For several years I didn’t go to the doctor because I didn’t have insurance. I didn’t know what to do until I found The Saban Free Clinic,” said Tracy. After examination, Associate Medical Director Dr.

Casey KirkHart diagnosed her with rheumatoid arthritis. She says, “How the Clinic staff has handled my condition has helped me accept it and made it not as scary.” Although not curable, Tracy says her story is a successful one because she was able to find excellent affordable care and is managing the pain.

Tracy is just one of many patients at the Clinic with stories similar to hers. We are committed to helping people from all walks of life who are in need of health care, regardless of their ability to pay. We are grateful to our donors and partners for helping make this possible.

Read more patient stories and make a contribution at: http://www.give2gether.com/projects/saban-free-clinic-2/

foR tHe HeAltH of ouR CoMMunity, we’Re BetteR toGetHeR by Allyn Cioban, Director of Development

Every part of our organization collaborates to improve the health and wellbeing of our community. From our providers and nurses, to our Operations staff and volunteers, we take a team approach to best serve our patients. Your partnership is vital to continuing our work. In fact, last year your gifts to the Clinic totaled $3.2 million — almost 20 percent of our budget — and helped make a positive impact in our community.

To ensure that our Clinic continues to provide quality care for our patients, we rely on three major areas of support: grants, fundraisers, and individual contributions.

Our grants team actively reaches out to foundations and corporations, and collaborates with the Clinic operations team on managing government grants. We apply for nearly 100 competitive grants and raise $1.5 million annually from foundations alone. In the coming year, we will seek supplementary funding to modernize our Clinic and implement Electronic Health Records.

Our event team raises approximately $1.5 million annually. They work closely with the Friends of The Saban Free Clinic on three annual events: Golf Classic, Poker Tournament and Dinner Gala (read more about these events on page 5) along with several additional fundraisers throughout the year.

Further support is raised through direct-mail and targeted fundraising campaigns, as well as bequests from planned gifts designated by generous supporters like you.

Thank you for your partnership and continuous trust in us to care for our community. Please contact me directly at [email protected] or 323-330-1656 with feedback and questions.

tRAnsfoRMinG ouR MediCAl HoMe foR AllAs health care reform takes full effect in 2014, a transformation is underway at The Saban Free Clinic to create a new kind of medical home. We’re redesigning our health-delivery system to enhance how we treat diseases, and help prevent high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and other chronic illnesses affecting our community. In 2012 the Clinic turned months of evaluation into action by revamping its Quality Management Program to ensure even greater accountability for better health outcomes.

Through foundation and donor support the Clinic will transition to Electronic Health Records in the year ahead. The goal is to share relevant information across health networks and reduce duplications in tests and services in a more complete and timely fashion than paper records. Electronic Health Records will also allow us to better manage the health of our entire patient population, and will ensure that we accurately measure and report improvements to public health agencies and foundation supporters.

As we transform and improve, the Clinic strengthens its commitment to a health-delivery model for patients that is effective, based on scientific knowledge, and does not vary in quality because of personal characteristics including age, sex, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, geographic location, or socioeconomic circumstances.

plAnned GiVinG: it’s A ReAlly Good tHinGFaye Miller became involved with The Saban Free Clinic 20 years ago when her good friend, the late Greta Furst, invited her to help with a luncheon fundraiser to benefit Clinic patients at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Faye says she “was hooked” and has been supporting the Clinic ever since!

She stays involved because she believes in the Clinic’s mission, its valuable services, and feels strongly that health care is important. She shared a story about the 5-year old daughter of a family friend who was having terrible dental issues. The family couldn’t afford insurance or dental visits, so Faye recommended that they visit the Clinic. The Clinic took such good care of that little girl that she remained a dental patient for years, until she went away to college!

Before he passed away, Faye’s dad, Isidore Bergner, visited the Clinic weekly for blood pressure check-ups. Faye says he eventually became a major contributor, “because of how well he was treated when he came for services.” When Faye found out after her dad passed away that he had named the Clinic in a charitable remainder trust, she felt very proud!

Faye has since named the Clinic in her own will. She says, “If you can do something good when you are gone and know that because of you people will benefit, it’s a really good thing.”
