M Context: Crescent Girls School (CGS) started in 1956 is a popular girl’s school in Singapore. CGS has a rich culture of using technology in teaching and learn- ing. CGS in 2007 was appointed as a mentor school in the Microsoft Innovative Schools Programme to mentor 12 schools around the world. Innovation summary: With the vision of promoting person- alised learning for every student, CGC embarked on an M-learning initiative (mobile learning anytime, anywhere). The school explored the value of tablet PCs to support and develop a personalised learning curriculum. All staff and some year groups use tablet PCs in their classrooms. With the development of a school-wide wireless sys- tem, this allowed learning to happen both in and outside the classroom. Teachers also started becoming co-producers of content with students. The aim was to create a student-centred mobile learning environment. Leading questions for reflection: 1. What are some benefits of mobile learning in teaching and learning? 2. What practical issues will need to be considered when giving personal computing devices such as tablet PCs to each student (cost, security, etc.)? 3. What training would be needed for the teachers? 4. Does mobile learning add value to the current curriculum structure? 5. What infrastructure and technical support would be needed to support mobile learning?
