Emily Laura called me a week or so ago and asked if I could write something about Bill for this newsletter. Naturally, I agreed. Who ever turns Emily down? But then she added, “I’ve asked a couple of other people to write something too. Do you think you could put it all together? I told her I’d try.

Trumpet player/entertainer Eric Mannering was the first to reply.

“I remember Bill from the early days of the “Imperial Jazz Band” at Lees Imperial Tavern on the riverfront in downtown Windsor. That would be in the late 60s and early 70s. He was an ardent supporter of Dixieland Jazz, and due mostly to his enthusiasm, the word was spread among his associates and fellow music lovers; thus Lees became the place to be every Saturday afternoon (also Wednesday evenings).”

Remembering Bill Knowles

Bob Amis, a friend of Bill’s and a benefactor of the Jazz Club, also fell prey to Emily’s wiles. He wrote:

“I met Bill Knowles in 1989. He was an entertainment entrepreneur. He was not only the founder of the Detroit/Windsor Jazz Club, he WAS the Detroit Windsor Jazz Club!

“Bill had the uncanny ability to sense what his friends and audience wanted in entertainment. He had the contacts and capability to fill those wants. After a series of concerts in smaller venues he found Shields and began the social event that, for many of us, continues to this day.

“During Bill’s residency in Farmington Hills, we would meet for lunch at least once a week at the “Chinaman’s” (our designation for the restaurant.) We would spend the lunch time discussing current events, sports scores, etc. Bill would always arrive first and when I walked in I would find him in the first booth on the right side, facing the door. Bent over, he would be doing the crossword puzzle from the morning paper. (It was a rare occasion when he could not finish it in a matter of minutes.)

“Bill was very articulate and had an excellent vocabulary. He always had a story for me upon arrival, and usually another when we parted. Here’s one of his favorites.

One day the Chinese waiter, who usually took our orders, was not his happy self. Bill asked him what was the matter. He answered, “The boss just hired a new waitress. She’s from Australia.” Bill asked, “So what’s the problem?” The waiter replied, “I’ve been in this country for twelve years. She just got off the boat and speaks better English than I do!”

“It will be difficult entering that restaurant and not seeing Bill in there, doing his crossword puzzles anymore.”

And that brings us to me. I met Bill at the Legion, in Tecumseh. We became friends and eventually I helped him maintain his membership and mailing lists.

Bill loved jazz music…especially that produced by Oscar Peterson…but he had a special place in his heart for the Windsor/Detroit Jazz Club. When the Club lost their Canadian venue, he decided to bring the music to Detroit. The next few years seemed to be a constant battle to find a place for the musicians to play. Those of us who followed the music found ourselves in places we would never have otherwise visited…SK Brewers; Ted O’Rourke’s; the Elks Clubs in Troy and on Big Beaver Rd.; Temple Beth-El in Bloomfield Hills; the Monaghan K of C in Livonia (Bill was non-denominational. If you’d rent him a hall, he’d put a band in it.) Finally he found Shields, and the Club had a home.

As Eric mentioned, Bill was a proud Canadian and never tired of telling us that his father helped build the Ambassador Bridge. And as Bob said, Bill always had a story. One I remember happened just before one of our annual Mardi Gras parties. Bill was in a Walmart store and discovered a sale on umbrellas. He immediately thought they’d be great for the “Second Line” who pa-rade around the hall twirling their umbrellas during the concert. He decided to buy them all. As he struggled to the checkout counter, trying to balance this armful the lady behind him tapped him on the shoulder and said, “So…you expecting rain?”

All in all Bill Knowles wll be remembered as a true Jazz aficionado, a kind man with a warm personality. A man who could always make you smile.. He’ll be missed. n

Are Your Dues “Over” Due?Welcome to our many new members. As a reminder, your membership card

does not entitle you to free entrance to our Shield’s concerts. We wish that were the case, but your $10 cover charge pays our band for that day. Thank you for your understanding.

Reminder to current members! All dues were payable in January 2013 un-less you joined or paid in the last quarter of 2012. If you have not done so, please remit your dues and also include the form on the back of this newsletter with your check. Members in arrears will be deleted from our membership roster in March. Thank you for your consideration in this matter – your dues are critical to fund our concerts and numerous other expenses.

Thanks again to all of those who have taken time to send in your dues checks, and special thanks to our Patrons who are able to do a little extra. You are the reason we do this.

Special thanks to Don Goss and Pat Elliott who sell raffle tickets at each event. Often times, a generous gesture such as buying raffle tickets means the difference between a profit or loss that day. Remember, we need your little warm bodies at our Shield’s concerts! We know you can’t make every one but if the society is to survive, we can’t have any empty seats. n

The Rec’ Bowl Series“Jazzin’ With Some Barbeque”

Back for a second season, there will be another jazz series at the Rec’ Bowl in downtown Mt. Clemens this summer. A favorite of East-siders, “Jazzin’ With Some Barbeque” brought top-name leaders and their bands out to perform. The series will begin in late May and continue until after Labor Day featuring tunes of the Great American Songbook and songs that dancers and jazz fans alike want to hear.

Hosts Fred and Patti Fox (hence the fox in the logo) host this series in a covered outdoor venue meant for good barbeque, dancing, and jazz. The weekly concerts will be held on Wednesday evenings this year, with big band events on some Sunday evenings. The schedule is in the works but if you didn’t have an op-portunity to get out there last year, put it on your “bucket list” for this year. The venue has an extensive menu, cash bar, new dance floor, no cover, and is family friendly.

Leaders who will be on the lineup this year are Johnny Trudell, Dave Ben-nett, Dave Tatrow, Jerry McKenzie, Ron Kischuk, Paul Keller, John Hammer, Tom Brown with George Benson, John Hammer, The Millionaires, the Gary Greenfelder Orchestra, Swing Shift Orchestra and more, and of course, all of the talented musicians and vocalists we love.
