About Us

The Department of Commerce, formally set up as a separate entity in 1967, has imbibed the DSE tradition of exploring new frontiers of knowledge and innovation in academics. In its history spanning over three decades, it has redefined commerce education in the country. The Department has the legitimate claim and pride of being the premier institution in India for course curriculum development, teaching and researches in Commerce discipline. The rapid growth of the Department of Commerce is reflected in its expansion as well as novelty in its academic programmes. This has led to the commencement of master level professional programmes, in addition to the traditional M. Phil., Ph.D. and the flagship course of the Department, i.e. M.Com. programme. As a response to market imperatives, the Department of Commerce initiated two new post-graduate professional programmes in 1995, namely, Master of International Business (MIB) and Master of Human Resource and Organizational Development (MHROD). In the last two decades, these courses have made a mark through teaching and research in all contemporary areas of International Business and Human Resource Management. These two programmes have been restructured to MBA (International Business) and MBA (Human Resource Development) with effect from 21st July 2014.

Message from the Head of Department

For those of you who do not know us, the Department of Commerce at Delhi School of Economics (DU), formally set up as a separate entity in 1967 takes pride to pioneer the two specialized courses, namely MIB and MHROD. I am delighted to share the news to the industry that from this academic year, the nomenclature of our two professional courses MIB and MHROD has been changed to MBA (IB) and MBA (HRD). Both the Courses have been well received by the industry since 1995 till date. However, in order to improve the course curriculum and impart the knowledge on contemporary developments taking place in the domain of International Business and Human Resources & Organizational Development, a need to revise the course structure was observed and executed. The course structure and syllabus of both the courses have been revised in a comprehensive way and is effective from this academic session. The revised syllabus is mainly oriented towards professional augmentation taking place in the global as well as domestic business arena. So let me close with congratulations to the faculty, students and the alumni, and wish them every success!

Message from previous year’s panelist

Erudition 2013 was an amazing event (the 18th year of this convention) organized by the students of MIB-MHROD - Delhi School of Economics.

The theme this year was “Business Sustainability” which is very relevant in the turbulent times we live in currently. To elaborate,

in the aftermath of the financial crisis, Euro-zone debt issues, perennial growth lags, lower industrial output, demographic shifts(ageing population in developed economies), and so on, one has to run really hard to stay at the same place. Add to that the catastrophes that have increased in frequency and severity, growing terrorism risks, political unrest in multiple geos, etc. which adds to the unpredictability and chaos. The forum had very reputed speakers from industry, government and pedagogy. I had the honor of sharing the dais with prominent figures like Prof JP Sharma (Head and Dean, Deptt of Commerce, DSE), Dr. Kavita Sharma (Coordinator MIB), and other prominent figures. Prof. Dinesh Singh, Vice Chancellor of Delhi University was the chief guest and it was a pleasure to hear his insights. This was an absolutely insightful 2 day seminar where diverse topics ranging from Geopolitical stability, Reinventing marketing in the era of social media, Financial pandemonium and growth therein to Human resource development – attracting, grooming and retaining top talent. This forum gave a common platform to educationists, industrialists, entrepreneurs, and students to share practical knowledge and insights to overcome fierce competition, and drive industry leading growth. I am sure this left everyone enriched on how does one go about creating new profitable models, innovative methods of combating competitive pressures, and bolstering stagnant growth numbers to name a few. End with warm congratulations to the students who pulled off this successfully with hard work, meticulous planning and coordination. Thanks to the professors and admin too for the superb support!

RE-MORPH Changing Business Scenario

Alan Watts, the British philosopher remarkably said, “The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.” Constant change is a business reality, and organizations must continually adapt to their environments to stay competitive or risk becoming obsolete. That is why the ability to incorporate big changes into the DNA of an enterprise while driving operating results is a much-sought-after competency. The future of any organization is influenced by its understanding of economic, social and technological challenges and how they affect the business environment and more particularly the organization. Whether it's emerging markets like China, India or Brazil impacting production and sales, demographical changes forcing expansion of the product portfolio or changing buyers’ behavior which is challenging service models, companies need to adapt to turn threats and challenges into opportunities. As the pace of change continues to increase, an organization’s change capability will become a greater requirement for sustainable performance. The organizations that are investing in these capabilities are more likely to capitalize on future opportunities.

Day 1 – 26th September 2014

09:00am – 10:30am Inaugural Session

10:30am – 10:45am Tea Break & Networking

10:45am – 12:30pm Panel Discussion 1 Employee Attraction and Engagement through CSR Businesses that invest in CSR are likely to have a higher level of employee engagement. Employees want a sense of pride and fulfillment from their work, a purpose and importantly a company’s whose values match their own which they get from CSR activities. CSR related activities should be geared around the employee’s private life and activities. This will create a win-win situation and especially help to retain employees because they get additional fulfillment and satisfaction from their employer supporting their social engagement

12:30pm – 1:30pm Lunch & Networking

01:30pm – 03:00pm Panel Discussion 2 The Changing Dynamics of Talent Acquisition Endemic talent shortages, challenging economic conditions, the rapid growth of web-based recruiting and opportunities in social media are combining to bring about significant change in the way organisations go about recruiting. From adopting techniques used by sales and marketing teams to assessing the business case for investment in web and other technologies, HR managers face a wide range of issues as they look to build an effective talent acquisition strategy.

03:00pm – 03:15pm Tea & Networking

03:15pm – 05:00pm Panel Discussion 3 Leveraging Industrial Relations for Organizational Growth and Harmony IR in many companies, more particularly in the manufacturing sector is far from peaceful. Most IR as well as the HR practitioners admits that it is an alarming trend, as losing sight of IR aspect can lead to a disastrous impact for the company. Therefore, it is an imperative that importance of Industrial Relations is restored to have workplace harmony and uninterrupted growth of the company. IR should be placed in the forefront of the management policy framework and there should be effective application of key IR strategies to achieve workplace harmony and sustained growth of the organization.

Day 2 – 27th September 2014

09:00am – 10:30am Inaugural Session

10:30am – 10:45am Tea Break & Networking

10:45am – 12:30pm Panel Discussion 1 Corporate Governance and Financial Fraud – The Changing Paradigm in India Fraud, misconduct and non-compliance are issues that Indian firms seldom feel comfortable discussing. Does that mean there is no malpractice prevalent within the industry? Or that all firms are compliant with regulations? How does one gauge the extent of these practices in India? There is increased regulatory activism, and existing Acts are being amended and updated to address new and complex threats. Regulators are proposing more stringent standards for prevention, detection and reporting of fraud. But will that be enough? Or will the governments and the corporate have to go a step further to prevent a sub-prime crisis from happening all over again?

12:30pm – 1:30pm Lunch & Networking

01:30pm – 03:00pm Panel Discussion 2 e-Commerce – A Complement or Competitor? According to JLL’s Cross Sector Outlook released this spring, despite e-commerce’s leaps and bounds over the last few years, it still represents a relatively small percentage of total retail sales—6.0% to be exact. People still need to see and touch things; the instant gratification of an in-store purchase can’t be discounted. Retailers who want to thrive will need to incorporate it all—hands-on goods, e-commerce and mobile-commerce. Or will the rise of e-commerce in the future take down the bookstore up the street, your local shoe store? Is this the end of traditional retail or is e-commerce a parallel reality? There are still mysteries to be uncovered.

03:00pm – 03:15pm Tea & Networking

03:15pm – 05:00pm Panel Discussion 3 BRIC BY BRIC - Dominance of the BRICS Countries in the World Economy Over the last decade, the BRIC, now BRICS, term has come to symbolize the growing power of the world’s largest emerging economies and their potential impact on the global economic and, increasingly, political order. Ten years ago one could hardly imagine that companies from the BRICS countries would become key players in global mergers and acquisitions transactions, capable of investing hundreds of millions – even billions – of dollars into various assets around the world. Now transactions of this magnitude are performed on a routine basis. There is bound to be a change in the world order. But, who will take over as the next ‘world leader,’ remains to be seen.

Erudition ’13

The 18th Annual Convention was a huge and echoing success. It was organised jointly by the students of Master of Human Resources and Organization Development (M.H.R.O.D.) and Master of International Business (M.I.B.) at Double Tree- Hilton, Mayur Vihar on 27th -28th September, 2013. The theme of Erudition’13 was ‘Business Sustainability – Emerging Realities’. Businesses have come a long way in establishing themselves as the material anchor that society can hold on to. The call for broadening business perspectives is gaining momentum, so that, optimum utilization of resources – human and material- happens at a focused yet sustainable way, Erudition '13 provided an opportunity for the students to interact with the corporate world and share ideas. It provided a common platform to educationists, industrialists, entrepreneurs, financial gurus and students to share practical knowledge and put their insights on current on-goings in business globally. The future of the country, the capacity and capability of her people, and hence their international competitiveness, hinges on their educational foundation; the Annual Convention seeks to strengthen this very foundation by exposing students to industry leaders and their ways of thought. Erudition ’13 boasted of industry leaders like Mr. Sumit Sehgal (Corporate Vice President-Marketing, Max Life Insurance), Mr. Rajiv Bajaj (CFO & CS, Panasonic AVC Networks India Co. Ltd), Dr. Akhil Prasad (Country Counsel (India), Boeing International Corporation), Mr. RK Sharma (Head of Exports, Nestle India) on the IB day, followed by Mr. Diwakar Puri (Head Talent Sourcing & HR Systems Corp HRM & CPSF | Hero MotoCorp Ltd), Mr. Sameer Khanna (VP & Head HR, Ericsson India), Ms. Madhvi Goyal (VP-HR, Bharti Infratel), Mr. Ashish Srivastava (Director - Human Resources, PNB-MetLife, India) and many more on the HR day. The Convention was rich and comprehensive in its coverage and depth which concluded with a great sense of accomplishment and fulfillment for the organizers and is etched as a saga of intellectual extravagance in the minds of everyone who were a part of it.
