Principal’s Report
I have been enjoying watching the Olympics over the last week or so. It is great to see athletes from so many countries strive to achieve their best. For some a medal is the reward they are seeking for their efforts, for some a personal best performance is what it is all about and for others just being there means that they have overcome many hardships.
You can liken the Olympic journey to the journey our Year 12 students go through at high school. In order to get to the Olympics an athlete needs to peak at just the right time. They have often been training for many years with the Olympic Games as the focus which has kept them going. The Higher School Certificate has similarities. It is a long journey. It starts in Year 7 and builds in intensity when students enter the senior school. An athlete doesn‘t start serious training a month before the games, it has been a build-up of conscious effort, sacrifice and developing habits which allows them to give their best at the right time. It is no fun getting up at 4:00am and running 10 kilometres or following a line on the bottom of a pool for hours on end, but they know it is all for a reason.
A student preparing for the Higher School Certificate needs to develop study habits as early as possible and to comprehend that the sacrifices made in the lead up will be worth it when the exams come along. Their training involves putting in the time at school, making the most of lessons and the teachers‘ expertise. More training is done at home with revising notes, practise questions and completing the necessary assessment tasks on time and to the best of their ability.
When it comes time for their exams, like an athlete, Year 12 should be in the best shape they can be to take on the challenge—no last minute panic, but a steady development of skills and knowledge, revision of concepts and just plain hard work. Then they will be confident of achieving a personal best.
Just like at the Olympic Games, when it comes to measuring your performance you are out to do the best you can. Many athletes know that they have no chance of winning a medal, yet they give it their all. When a student sits for their exams they must not compare themselves with others, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than themselves (Desiderata). Students must strive to achieve their personal best. If they can walk away from the exam room and say I did the very best I could, then they have achieved as much as the athlete who wins gold.
Always remember it is never too late to start!
In news unrelated to the Olympic Games I am very pleased to say that our Trade Training
Centre Kitchen is about to be completed and handed over to us. By the 17th August we
should be able to use the new facility, a month ahead of schedule. The TAS staff are very
keen to use the new facilities. Thanks to the construction team led by Peter Opacack who did
a great job. Peter was able to use many local tradespeople in the construction and this was
appreciated. Students will be in the new kitchen very soon.

AZAI, HERE WE COME!
In September, a group of students and teachers from Coomealla High School will fly to Osaka in Japan to visit our exchange school in Nagahama (previously known as Azai). Mr and Mrs Lynch will supervise the group – Emma Bone, Rhianna Duncan, Emily Hancock, Callum Mackie, Kate Olofsson Natalia Radloff, Molly Stephens, Korreigh Wade, and Sarah Watts.
This exchange program is in its nineteenth year of operation, with students from Nagahama and Coomealla High School making student exchange visits in alternating years. We were due to visit Nagahama in 2011, but due to the earthquake and tsunami in Japan the visit was unable to proceed, to the disappointment of students and staff in both schools. After waiting two full years for our turn, we are even more excited to be finally going.
Nagahama is located south of Osaka in central Honshu, and is approximately one hour from Kyoto. It is primarily an agricultural region producing rice. While in Nagahama we will attend school and do lots of sightseeing with our host families.
With only 6 weeks to go, over the next few weeks we will be shopping for gifts for our host families, learning some basic Japanese language and learning how to play softball (so we can win the school challenge). Mrs Ward, Ms Watson and Mr Doyle, our ―experts‖ who have been in past years, are doing a great job helping us prepare and telling us stories about their experiences.
In our own words:
―Can‘t wait for Japan. My excitement is over the moon—being able to experience the different ways other people
live‖ - Korreigh Wade
―I‘m excited to travel to somewhere I‘ve never been and to experience their culture‖ - Molly Stephens
―I can‘t wait to get to Japan and learn how they live‖ - Natalia Radloff
―I can‘t wait to meet my host family and experience a heap of new food and a different
culture‖ - Rhianna Duncan
―I‘ve never been overseas before, so I‘m really excited to experience a new culture‖ - Sarah Watt
―I like Japanese food so I‘ll be fine‖ - Callum Mackie
―I can‘t wait to go shopping in Japan‖ - Kate Olofsson
―I am so excited to be able to learn and experience a new culture and try
new things‖ - Emma Bone
―I can‘t wait to go shopping, and try all
the different foods‖ - Emily Hancock

Education Week is an important event on the school calendar each year. For the second year Coomealla High presented ‗School on Tour‘ to our local primary schools. Over the course of two days we visited Wentworth, Pomona, Gol Gol, Buronga and Dareton schools.
The idea is to entertain the students and enlighten them as to some of the activities that await them once they graduate to high school. Our ‗Tour-ists‘ this year were Lachlan Cottrell, Ryan and Shanae Tilley, Riley Russell, Eli Kervin, Daniel Murphy-Clarke (one day) and our emcee Rachel Alderton. Mr Scotton once again enjoyed a chance to play his bass guitar and Mr Gee drove the bus.
―I was very pleased with the cooperation and teamwork displayed by the group, particularly with a late change to the line up and a few unavoidable technical issues,‖ said Mr Scotton, ―everyone helped with set-up and pack-up at each venue, it was a cohesive group that grew in confidence over the two days. Thank you to the staff and students at all the schools for making Coomealla High so welcome.‖
We are looking forward to an expanded show for next year‘s ‗Tour‘.

HSC Kickstart Physics
Workshop
On June 28, Mr Fratti and the Year 11 and 12 Physics students attended an HSC Kickstart Physics Workshop run by The University of Sydney‘s Physics Department at Broken Hill High School.
They left early in the morning (around 5:30am) and arrived at Broken Hill around 7:30am to 8:00am local time. Mr Fratti arrived first and he had the opportunity of enjoying a well deserved foot long meatball subway.
Three high schools attended the workshop: Broken Hill, Willyama and Coomealla. This was a great opportunity for students and teachers alike to get together and learn about the latest in Physics research.
The highlight of the workshop was the demonstration of the latest superconductors developed by The University of Sydney. According to researchers, in about 15 to 50 years superconductors will play an important role in all our everyday activities. For example, cars may ―hover‖ or ―float‖ on the streets.
The day finished perfectly and yes: with another stop at Subway for another well-deserved meat ball subway. All students and teachers thanked The Sydney University staff for coming so far west to spend some time with our senior students.
It is important to note that neither
kangaroo, nor goat, nor emu was injured during the trip.

themselves better and to see the world in a new light.
Carefully selected students will arrive in February for one or two semesters from France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Japan, Canada and the U.S.A. They will attend a local secondary school, arrive with their own spending money and comprehensive insurance cover – all arranged by Southern Cross Cultural Exchange.
