KENTON CO. FAIR July 16-21, 2018 4 -H’ers have the opportunity to showcase their project work and skills at the county fair. This week-long event is full of shows and activities for 4-H’ers and their families. Project work that is entered into the fair is displayed during the week at the 4-H building. 4-H projects are awarded ribbons based on the “Danish System.” This is a judging system where the project is not compared to others in its class but to an ideal standard. Youth are awarded a blue, red or white ribbon based on how close the project approaches this standard. The best entry in the class is considered the champion and receives a purple ribbon and is eligible for the state fair. Please note: Energy, Weather, and Miscellaneous categories are county only, and do not advance to the state fair. Therefore, no purple or champion ribbons will be awarded in these categories. This is a government mandate—we cannot take the project unless you are willing to give us your child’s number. Also this year, the state is requiring parents to sign a waiver form. An information form will be included with your child’s Kenton County fair check. It is your responsibility to fill out the form and return it to the Kenton County Extension Office by July 27. If you do not return the form your child will not be permitted to send items to the State Fair. Exciting things happening in Cloverville The Kentucky State Fair is just around the corner, and we are so excited about the changes happening in Cloverville, Kentucky 4-H’s village-like area. Cloverville is moving to the South Wing of the Kentucky Exposition Center to be a part of the fair’s newly created AgLand, which highlights Kentucky’s agricultural heritage. These streets will help you navigate through the exhibit. Cloverville provides Kentucky 4-H with a fabulous opportunity to showcase the immense talent, hard work and dedication of these young Kentuckians. The state fair is the culminating event for these Kentucky 4-H projects that are vying for one more blue ribbon. These projects are already winners, having advanced through their county, and sometimes regional, contests to get to this point. In addition to the projects, Cloverville is home to live showcases and hands-on contests that allow 4-H members to display their natural talents and abilities and to entertain fairgoers. uring project registration, projects are grouped into categories. After judging is completed, club leaders are then encouraged to make a display of their 4-H’ers projects and of the club as a whole. These can be set up from noon to 4 p.m. on Monday, July 16, 2018. Contact Trevia Cooke for a space for your club at [email protected]. The best club display is awarded a plaque at the Recognition Banquet in recognition of their hard work. This year's theme is “4-H Is Out Of This World.”

REGIS TER YOUR FAIR PROJECT S S u n d a y , J u l y 1 5 , 2 0 1 8 ; 1 - 3 p m

The 4-H Building is the first building on your right as you walk up the hill from the parking area. The first place that you need to go is to the registration table set in the entrance of the building.

Registration is from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 15th. There you will receive your registration number. You can also pick up some extra fair tags if you need them. Tables are set up around the 4-H building for the different project areas. Go to the appropriate tables to register your project. Judging will occur immediately following registration. Any individual who cannot make the Sunday registration should make arrangements with their club leader for entering their projects. Contact one of the agents if you have any questions. Have fun at the fair!

Projects may be picked up on Sunday, July 22 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Each person must arrange to have someone pick up their projects (many club leaders will pick up for the club) or pick them up themselves. In addition, all project books, score sheets, and ribbons should be picked up at this time. Depending on the fair board office, your premium checks may also be available. The Cooperative Extension Service is not responsible for items left at the fair.

Each year the fair board allows us to distribute passes for entrance into the Kenton County Fair to 4-H members at a cost of $2.00 each. There is a limit of 6 passes per enrolled 4-H’er. These passes do not include rides and are for 4-H youth only and not siblings or parents. They will be available beginning Monday, June 25, 2018, at the Durr Extension Office on Taylor Mill Road between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, until Thursday, July 19. They will also be available Sunday, July 15, at the 4-H Registration Booth at the Kenton County Fairgrounds from 1-3 p.m. Checks (payable to Kenton County Fair) or correct change are requested.

TAGS are available at the Extension Office prior to the fair or at the fair during Registration on Sunday, July 15. Complete the tags as shown.

ENTRY NO. - Assigned 4-H fair registration number. This number will be used on every exhibit that the child enters. Each 4-H entry must have a 4-H before the number otherwise the check will go to someone in open class. (4-H’ers need to use their same assigned 4-H number for open class entries, too. ALWAYS precede your number with 4-H for BOTH open & 4-H entries.)

PROJECT - Project number from the fair catalog. DIV. - Division number from the fair catalog. ARTICLE - Describe the item.

Call the Cooperative Extension Office to receive your registration number for 4-H entries at the county fair. These are placed on the registration tags and are used in processing the premium checks for fair entries. Numbers are also available at the fair during Registration on Sunday, July 15. Remember: if you have a number from previous years—that is the number you use each year. Thank You!

The Kentucky State Fair, Louisville, is August 16-26, 2018. Tickets are available to allow 4-H’ers and their 4-H leader to view Cloverville exhibits at a cost of $2.50 each, payable to Kenton County 4-H Council. (Checks only please, we cannot accept cash.)
