A new approach to thinking about COPD

“the world is becoming too

fast, too complex

and too networked

for any company

to have all

the answers inside.” Yochai Benkler

Professor at Harvard Law Business School and Author of “The Wealth of Networks”

COPD:

Crowdshaped Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

(COPD), the world’s third biggest killer,

is one of the great health challenges of

our time. It’s impact on patients and their

carers is considerable.

At Novartis, we want to provide innovative

healthcare solutions that address the

evolving needs of patients and societies.

We want to work in close collaboration with

partners who share a common vision and

complementary strengths.

We want to take a new approach to

generating ideas that will ease suffering and

enhance quality of life.

We don’t have all the answers, but we

want to make a difference. Ultimately we

need to be winning for patients.

And that’s why COPD Crowdshaped was

born.

1: DEFINING THE

CHALLENGE

Page 8: COPD crowdshaped overview for attendees - 2015

The Problem: People living with COPD often fail to recognise the

impact the condition has on their life.

Stuck in a downward cycle, they become less active,

less social, less optimistic.

They aren’t aware of the support available to them.

And so slowly, day by day, their world shrinks.

The Challenge:

How can we

motivate people

living with COPD

to re-engage with life?

CROWD

“No matter

who you are,

most of the

smartest

people work

for someone

else.”

Bill Joy, Cofounder Sun Microsystems

BENEFIT TO

PATIENTS

Through COPD: Crowdshaped we

want to identify innovative

solutions that go ‘beyond the

medicine’, which will help to

enhance the everyday life of those

affected by COPD.

We hope through this new

approach we will be able to

generate ideas that will

ease suffering and enhance

quality of life.

BENEFIT TO THE

CROWD

Through COPD: Crowdshaped, we will

bring together partners who share a

common vision and complementary

strengths, providing an opportunity for

networking and establishing new

relationships.

Reasons for a crowd to participate:

- Altruism

- A feeling of belonging

- Building skills and experiences

- Identity

Finally, participants will hopefully identify

innovation solutions which may have the

opportunity to be taken to market.
