Early signs of dementia: fact sheet What is dementia? .............................................................................................................. Dementia is a syndrome usually of a chronic or progressive nature in which there is deterioration in cognitive function (i.e. ability to process thought) beyond what might be expected from normal ageing (WHO 2015). Forgetfulness. Getting lost. Poor concentration. Emotional changes. Difficulty finding words (especially names & nouns). Forgetful Getting lost Poor concentration Emotional & personality changes Difficulty understanding Difficulty finding words (especially names & nouns) Feeling depressed but may be unaware of memory loss Decline in mental functioning (e.g. muddled making phone calls) Everyone is unique and will experience dementia differently. That's why it is vital to provide care and support to people that is person centred and suitable for their individual needs.
