Boeing Financials PUM Experience

Our use of PUM began with our PS 9.2 Upgrade▪ Upgrade started in June 2013 and went live May 2014▪ First step - A demo PS 9.2 environment requiring minimal effort

and computing resources to accommodate▪ Requires use of the PeopleSoft Image

Reviewed documentation on PUM Home Page in My Oracle Support

▪ Lots of detailed information that was very helpful▪ Hardware and Software Requirements for PeopleSoft VirtualBox Images▪ Video Feature Overviews (VFOs)

▪ Can be overwhelming at first, but becomes less daunting as you begin working with PUM

▪ Continually updated with new content

We did send PS Admins to PUM class (post upgrade)▪ We had no issues getting through the upgrade without the class,

but continuing education with PUM is valuable



PeopleSoft Image Hardware Configuration

PeopleSoft Image is an important piece of PUM▪ This is the environment that will be the source for fixes and/or enhancements

PeopleSoft Image Hardware Configuration

Boeing Finance PUM Setup▪ Considered acquiring a new server, but decided to start with an existing desktop located outside of the data center

▪ Change Assistant loaded on separate server

▪ We sized so that we could run multiple PUM Images at the same time and keep backups of past Images

▪ Operating System: Windows

▪ Memory: 64 GB RAM ▪ Each virtual box instance defaults to 6GB RAM presently; so we are able to run 5 simultaneously, along with the host OS, no

paging/swapping, and substantial free memory available

▪ Disk space: Two 500 GB hard drives▪ 100 GB free disk space is required to download the necessary files and initialize each virtual appliance

▪ We added more space because we keep some of the old virtual boxes

▪ 6 core Xeon processor

▪ Admin rights on the desktop



PeopleSoft Image Setup Steps and ~Time

Download virtual box installer and image▪ 2 hours for the download

Unzip files and build out the OVA file (virtual appliance)▪ 30 mins

Import the virtual appliance into the virtual box software (build the image)▪ 10 mins

Boot and complete initial configuration▪ 20 mins

Evaluating New Releases

Prior to PUM▪ A traditional demo had to be set up

▪ Engage DBAs to build demo database▪ Engage PS Admins to configure the PIA environment

▪ May require upgrading components (Tuxedo, WebLogic, etc.)▪ Process took days (or more) to complete

With PUM▪ A PeopleSoft Image is used to set up new demo▪ Quick all-encompassing install of a full demo environment▪ Process only takes a few hours

Benefit: Faster and easier to evaluate new releases



Upgrade Starting Point

Prior to PUM▪ Wait for the first few bundles to be released

▪ Wanted to limit potential for issues requiring us to pull in a full bundle which would result in significant regression testing

With PUM▪ We knew we could pull in fixes for bugs identified during testing

▪ First environment upgraded on first 9.2 Image▪ Pulled in Image 2 when released▪ Pulled in specific fixes when issues identified during test

Benefit: Makes it easier to decide on starting image and allows you to start upgrade earlier



Fixes Applied During and After Upgrade

Prior to PUM▪ Apply latest bundles to traditional demo▪ Apply full bundle to upgrade test environments

▪ Resulting in need to regression test all modules

▪ Or analyze bundles to identify specific fix▪ ‘Cherry-pick’ the fix in an unsupported approach

With PUM▪ Ability to pull out individual fixes (plus dependencies if required)

▪ Allows you to apply delivered fixes much later in the upgrade process

▪ Applied ‘required to upgrade’ fixes and critical fixes discovered during upgrade testing▪ Utilizing PUM versus manual effort allowed us to resolve in hours vs days

Benefit: Faster and easier to identify and apply fixes




Applying fixes during the upgrade and after the upgrade much easier with PUM

Provides you with the ability to create a change package based on your criteria. i.e.:

▪ Get current on all modules

▪ Get current on a specific module

▪ Pull in a specific fix

▪ Pull in all severity one fixes

▪ Pull in all fixes related to a specific page

▪ Etc.




Automatically includes any dependencies or pre-requisites

Objects and changes in the package can be viewed in the PUM environment before applying▪ We have had some with only a few objects and others with a large amount – but you can view it before

applying

Visibility of the fixes applied in Maintenance Log▪ You can query PS_Maintenance_Log to view the bug IDs that were applied in a change package



Application Maintenance Strategy

Prior to PUM▪ Multiple demos maintained

▪ One that matches the patch level of our production environment▪ One that we kept up to date with the most recent patches from Oracle

With PUM▪ Maintain only one traditional demo

▪ A traditional demo that matches the patch level of our production environment▪ The PeopleSoft Image provides us with the environment with the most recent patches from Oracle

– Data Migration Workbench can be used to save off test data if needed

▪ Image load takes a few hours versus a few days with the prior method

Benefit: PeopleSoft Image easier and more efficient means to maintain the most recent PeopleSoft environment

Prior to PUM▪ We upgrade our Application every three years▪ Time and resources focus on upgrade every three

years

With PUM▪ Potential to level-load upgrades▪ We are still evaluating our long-term application

upgrade strategy with PUM

Benefit: Potential to level-load upgrades rather than a “big-bang” every few years



Managing SRs with Oracle Support

Prior to PUM▪ We attempt to replicate issues in a demo environment before

opening an SR▪ Although it is a demo environment, there still can be questions about the

configuration (i.e., which OS, which OS release, App Server configuration, etc.)

▪ When validating an issue is fixed, we apply the full bundle to demo

With PUM▪ Replicating a condition in the PUM environment eliminates the

variables of our configuration▪ It is the delivered Oracle configuration

▪ When validating an issue is fixed, it only takes a few hours to download the new image to test

Benefit: Easier to replicate issues and test fixes when working on SRs



Additional Tips

Leverage additional PeopleTools features to use in combination with PUM▪ Data Migration Workbench

▪ Used to move data during the applying of some Change Packages▪ Can be used to save configuration and/or test data from the PUM environment prior to downloading a

new Image

▪ PeopleSoft Test Framework▪ PUM provides the ability to pull in fixes and enhancements more frequently▪ A significant portion of time when upgrading or applying Change Packages is spent on testing▪ PTF can be used to automate and reduce time of the testing effort

▪ Related Content▪ Leveraging configuration options (like Related Content) versus customizations can reduce or

eliminate the need to reapply customizations as you upgrade or apply Change Packages

PeopleSoft Update ManagerBest Practices when Upgrading to PeopleSoft 9.2

• Start learning about PUM when Planning for your Upgrade• Re-evaluate your Maintenance Planning and Procedures• Use latest Image to Evaluate New Release• Consider the role of the Upgrade Source Image at your site (Initial Pass)• PUM is used during the 9.2 Upgrade for “Required at Upgrade” fixes

– Required at Install are delivered and applied as “classic” Change Packages– Required at Upgrade fixes are applied throughout the application upgrade

(install, Data Conversion, in between Test Move Passes)• Make sure to build both PUM and PT maintenance tasks into your Upgrade Project plan


PeopleSoft Update ManagerBest Practice: Reconsider your Maintenance Strategy

• Long-term:– Get current once per year.– Applying updates throughout the year will reduce the cost of getting current at the

end of the year.– PUM will help you not fall behind on application maintenance– Review new features throughout the year and decide if you want them.– Make sure to test. Use PTF/Usage Monitor to build automated testware

• Short-term:– Use PUM to search for Critical updates– Find and apply updates for your most important/most used products


PeopleSoft Update ManagerBest Practice: Update Images

• Download them regularly so you are ready if Critical issue happens

• Use a Download Manager

• Use each Update Image to evaluate new features as they are delivered


PeopleSoft Update ManagerBest Practice: Update Images and Bug Replication

• Consider where the Update Image “best fits” into your Bug replication procedure.

• Do you use a Demo environment patched to the same level as your Production system for bug replication?

• Reproduce with your local Demo environment first.

• If no bug, it’s a customization issue. If same bug, try to reproduce it on the latest Update Image.


PeopleSoft Update ManagerBest Practice: Configuration

• Use the Change Assistant and PeopleTools Client(s) delivered with the Update Image when applying maintenance. They are the most current.• This does not impact the PeopleTools release of your target environment.• Beginning with 8.54 based images, we will deliver both an 8.53 and 8.54 PeopleTools client and DB clients with every Update Image.• If your target environment is 8.53, use CA 8.54 and the PeopleTools 8.53 client to apply PUM Change Packages to your environment.• If your target environment is 8.54, use CA 8.54 and the PeopleTools 8.54 client to apply PUM Change Packages to your environment.
