OCTOBER 27, 2019 — THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR C)

SAINT BARTHOLOMEW’S PARISH

A lthough the opening lines of today’s first reading claim that the Lord “knows no favorites” (Sirach 35:15) and is “not unduly partial toward the

weak” (35:16), the remainder of the passage makes it clear that the Lord does indeed pay special attention to the weak, the oppressed, and the orphans and widows. The psalmist reiterates: “The Lord hears the cry of the poor” (see Psalm 34:18). In the Gospel, Jesus claims that a tax collector is more justified in his prayer for mercy than the Pharisee, whose prayer was an account of his own righteous deeds. Jesus’ point could not have been clearer: tax collectors in the Jewish society of Jesus’ day were not just lowly; they were considered outcasts and cheaters. They collected taxes for the hated Romans and almost certainly collected enough to assure a generous income for themselves.

STEWARDSHIP BY THE BOOK

Both the first reading and today’s psalm say clearly that the Lord hears the cry of the poor. Have I been given the gifts—of time or money or abilities—to be the means by which God answers their need?

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

“When have you felt self-satisfied in observing the mistakes of others?

What should we remember at such times?”

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

All are invited to contemplate, to adore, and to pray to Jesus Christ before the Blessed Sacrament every first Friday of the month. Hours of exposition are from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Please sign-up on-line. Adoration is a sign of devotion to and worship of Jesus Christ who is fully present to us in the Consecrated Host.

As the Lord said to Peter the night before His Crucifixion, “So you could not keep watch with me for one hour? (Matthew 26:40)”

“TO BOAST OR NOT TO BOAST”

The Gospel makes it pretty clear that exalting yourself is not the way into the Kingdom. So it might sound strange to hear Paul saying he expects the winner’s crown. So why is he any different from the Pharisee in the Gospel?

The Pharisee fasted and tithed, was not greedy or adulterous, but he misses the point. He thinks that being right with God comes from a person’s accomplishments. He feels no need to ask for God’s mercy. Yet if he relied on that mercy, he wouldn’t boast about his good deeds. Instead, he would ask for God’s mercy and then thank God by doing good or being generous. In other words, he thinks that God is waiting to be bribed with good deeds so that he can be justified. “After all,” thinks the Pharisee, “what else are good deeds for if not to make me look good?”

St. Paul, on the other hand, looks at his life as a Pharisee and is amazed that God forgave his “good works” of keeping the law and persecuting Christians. His boasting is not about what he has done for God; it’s more about what God has done through him.

Maybe you have examples of what God has done in your life: the people God sent to love you, the talents or abilities God gave you, the times God forgave your sins. Are you so grateful for what God has done that you want to do more for God? Or do you go to church, put your offering in the collection, and work a booth at the parish picnic so that God will be grateful to you? Remember that God loved St. Paul while he was still persecuting Christians, loved him enough not only to forgive him but to make him into a great apostle. Why waste your time trying to earn that love, when you could be doing whatever you can to thank God for it?

The purpose of the Art and Environment Committee is to provide fresh flower arrangements for the Church. The flowers are placed by the alter for weekend Masses, Christmas and Easter. Flowers are purchased by committee members (subject to reimbursement) and arrangements are made Thursday through Saturday. The flowers from the previous week are removed by the scheduled volunteers.

There are currently ten (10) members on the Committee. We work in pairs approximately once a month. The leadership for this Committee is in transition. If you enjoy flowers and wish to contribute to the beauty of St. Bartholomew’s, come join us. Experience/training is not necessary but helpful. We welcome you!!! BECOME A MINISTER!

Bestow Jesus as a Eucharistic Minister. Share the Word as a Lector. Become a Minister! Enrich your experience of the mass by joining our Liturgical Ministries! We are especially in need of Ministers for the Sunday, 8:00 a.m. Mass.

Individuals wishing to be trained as a Liturgical Minister at any time may contact Fr. Teddy at [email protected] to arrange for individual training.

“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you (James 4:8).” PRAYER REQUESTS

How can we pray for you? As a community, we need to keep each other’s deepest needs and yearnings of our hearts in prayer. With this in mind, we’d like to invite our Parish members to make known those friends and loved ones for whom we should pray.

You can submit your prayer request by visiting our website at www.Barts.org. The form to submit a prayer will be under the “Monthly Newsletter” section or go to tiny.cc/stbartsprayers. BRIDGE FOR FUN

If you are interested in playing in a friendly game and honing your bridge skills, please email Drew Donovan at [email protected]. The fee for the 9-month season is $100.00. The first game is free for new players. A knowledge of basic bridge fundamentals is needed.

“It is understanding that gives us an ability to have peace. When we understand the other fellow’s

SAINT BARTHOLOMEW’S PARISH

ADVENT CONCERT NOTICE

Mark your calendars! Please join us for our Advent Concert on Sunday, December 8th, at 2:00 p.m. in the church. The theme of the concert is “Day of Peace.” It will be filled with music to lift our hearts as we anticipate the birth of Christ.

We are always looking for singers, and we welcome any child of elementary/middle school age to join in the Advent Concert. Rehearsals will start in October on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 3:30–4:15 p.m. in the Music Room of the parish building. You can join us just for the concert or for year-round music-making! Please contact Maria Shao at [email protected] if interested.

We are also raising money for the concert and for all the masses during the Christmas season. Help us to make our Christmas celebrations as joyful and beautiful as we can. Please make your donation to St. Bartholomew, with the memo, “Christmas Music.” Thank you for your generosity! FILIPINO MINISTRY

The Filipino Ministry encourages all our Filipino parishioners and friends to actively participate in the activities and programs of St. Bart’s Parish and to undertake specific religious-related activities representative of the Catholic tradition in the Philippines upon approval by the Pastor such as the May Crowning (formerly known as Marian May) and the October Living Rosary. The Fil-Min also participates in a unique Filipino Christmas tradition called “Simbang Gabi” (Night Mass) celebrated with other Catholic churches in the deanery with a 9-day evening Novena Masses prior to Christmas Day. ART & ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE

The Art & Environment Committee is in need of a Committee Chairperson.

After 20+ years, we are retiring and it has been a very rewarding time. Many of the committee members will remain in place while others are also retiring. Time commitment is minimal. If you appreciate the arrangements in the Church, please step forward to help and thus continue this tradition. Experience is helpful but not necessary.

To apply or for more information, please contact Mary Rock at [email protected] or (650) 347-0701, ext 225.
