JULY 14, 2019 — FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR C)

ST. BARTHOLOMEW’S PARISH

O ur God is about relationships. In the first reading, Moses reminds the Israelites that the laws, which are already in their hearts, keep them

in right relationship with the God who loves them so much that they always find forgiveness. Centuries later, along comes Jesus, whom Paul describes to the Colossians as “the image of the invisible God,” the very embodiment of this God of love. In his parable about the good Samaritan, Jesus explains how the law of love overrules the letter of the law. Instead of answering the question, “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus demonstrates that it is not about who is worthy of being loved, but rather loving as God loves—about being neighbor, about being the good Samaritan. Jesus wants us to continue his work as images of this God of love by loving all people, even those who seem to be our enemies.

STEWARDSHIP BY THE BOOK

The good Samaritan was also a good steward, giving his time and his treasure to meet his neighbor’s need. At the end of this familiar story, Jesus urges His hearers—and us—to go and do the same!

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

“When have you gone out of your way to help a stranger in need?”

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

All are invited to contemplate, to adore, and to pray to Jesus Christ before the Blessed Sacrament every first Friday of the month. Hours of exposition are from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Please sign-up on-line. Adoration is a sign of devotion to and worship of Jesus Christ who is fully present to us in the Consecrated Host.

As the Lord said to Peter the night before His Crucifixion, “So you could not keep watch with me for one hour? (Matthew 26:40)”

“EXCUSES, EXCUSES”

As the saying goes, ignorance of the law is no excuse. That is what Moses is telling the people in the first reading. The laws of God are not difficult to understand. Anyone with a conscience should be able to live with them.

By the time of Jesus, the scribes and Pharisees had added many more laws. The scholar who questioned Jesus about eternal life knew what was important: loving God with all your being and loving your neighbor as yourself. If he had stopped there, he would have been all right. But by asking “Who is my neighbor,” he implied that there are limits to love.

Even today, we find people making excuses for not doing what God asks of us. We judge people who need help, saying they choose to be poor or homeless. We sign our kids up for so many sports that we don’t even go to church on Sundays. Before you start beating yourself up with guilt, remember that God expects us to take care of our families, to spend time with our children, and even to take time to rest and relax. If we are willing to look at our lives and bring them to God, asking for guidance, we are making the first steps to keep God’s law of love.

ST. BARTHOLOMEW’S PARISH

CHILDREN’S FAITH FORMATION

COME AND JOIN OUR MINISTRIES!

Would you like to experience the Catholic Faith through actions? Do you have a special ability you would like to share with your community? Are you looking for an opportunity to use your time and talent for your parish?

Saint Bart’s is always looking for new members to our ministries. Please consult this bulletin’s attached directory or call the St. Bart’s parish office to inquire about ministries you may be interested in joining. St. Bart’s is a welcoming community and we would be thankful if you gave one of our ministries a call to see how you can bring a positive contribution to your community.

Please do not hesitate to call any of the other St. Bart’s community of ministries. We are looking forward your participation and membership! MEN’S PRAYER GROUP

All are welcome! We meet every Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. in the Rich Bona Room (Media Center) on the 1st floor of the Parish Center. No application, appointment, recommendation or dues necessary. Coffee is always on.

Our format is simple: • Each attendee has an opportunity to offer a prayer of

his choosing • A few minutes where anyone there can offer

information of interest to all • A topic of faith is presented by a volunteer member

with a couple of questions for discussion • Open discussion • A final prayer before a closing promptly at 8 a.m.

Our parish Men’s Prayer Group is also considered a Cursillo 4th Day group. Stop by if you want to learn more about it—and us. SAMARITAN HOUSE MINISTRY

Saint Bartholomew’s Samaritan House Ministry provides volunteers to Samaritan House to serve dinners to clients at Safe Harbor Homeless Shelter and at the Masonic Hall in San Mateo and to deliver meals to the homebound throughout our community—only 2-4 hours per month! Please join us in this worthy endeavor to humbly live our faith. “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters, you did for me (Matthew 25:40).”

Contact Brenda Sell at (650) 483-3765.

JULY 14, 2019 — FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR C)

ST. BARTHOLOMEW’S PARISH

FILIPINO MINISTRY

The Filipino Ministry encourages the Filipino parishioners and friends to actively participate in the activities and programs of St. Bart’s Parish and to undertake specific religious-related activities representative of the Catholic tradition in the Philippines upon approval by the Pastor such as the May Crowning (formerly known as Marian May) and the October Living Rosary. The Fil-Min also participates in a unique Filipino Christmas tradition called “Simbang Gabi” celebrated with other Catholic churches in the deanery with a 9-day evening Novena Masses prior to Christmas Day. MINISTRY OF HOSPITALITY

We are all called to be ministers of hospitality. Here at St. Bart's, our little group is dedicated to helping create an environment that fosters fellowship and welcome among parishioners and visitors. Although most hospitality centers around food, we really see this as a ministry and not just a refreshment committee. We are blessed to have a large number of people who volunteer to host Coffee and Donut Sundays, and/or to provide sweet or savory goodies for parish events like the Christmas Concert. We also provide candy for the kiddos on holidays, and help other parish groups with their events when we can. There can never be too many helpers. With more volunteers we might once again be able to do some of the things we have had to give up like partner with the Men's Club to host Pancake Breakfasts, act as Greeters at Sunday Masses, and offer more Coffee Sundays. We would be happy to hear from you and add your names to our roster of volunteers.

Another biggie! Our group of 10-12 members has shrunk to 3. So, as much as we would like to plan and carry out more activities for the parish, we need more people to help make that happen.

Please contact us if you are able to help in any of the above mentioned things. Thank you! For more information, please contact Sue Brenner by email at [email protected] or Lois Pileri at [email protected]. PARISH ONLINE GIVING PROGRAM

Have you thought about signing up for electronic monthly giving? Please go to weshareonline.org to or contact Mary Rock in the Parish Office at (650) 347-0701, ext 225 or [email protected] for more information.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

“You must remember that some things legally right are not morally right.”

~Abraham Lincoln

Please join the St. Bart’s Social Justice group as we try to do what’s required to make our community more just. Our next meeting is tentatively scheduled on Monday, July 22nd. For more information, please contact Ross Weir at [email protected] or (650) 678-0480. ST. BARTS PARISH BOOK CLUB

We meet monthly to discuss a wide range of books, fiction and non-fiction. Some are specifically religious, others related to our Catholic “culture,” but all books are viewed in the light of our shared faith perspective. We enjoy and gain from everyone’s insights. New participants are always welcomed!

The July 11th meeting has been cancelled. The next meeting will be on September 12th at 10:30 a.m. in the Media Center, for a discussion of “The Rent Collector” by Camron Wright. Please note that there will be no book club meeting for the month of August. For more information, please call Alba Toboni at (650) 922-2237. JOIN ST. BARTS ON THE WEB
