REALITY AND ARGUMENTS AGAINST
CSR
The limitations of CSR
The CSR activities of a company are limited to areas and activitiesfrom which profit can be achieved.
Business cannot really commit economic resources unlessgovernment or other institutions bear the cost involved.
CSR practices are more CEO driven and participation of variousstakeholders is limited.
The activities are concentrated in areas where resources areavailable for investment and resource poor areas are neglected.
Business case for observing CSR does not consider direct questionon participation, benefit sharing and economic democracy.
Ethical standards are rarely maintained.

Cont.
CSR limited to the big players; if the smallplayers are doing it, there is not enoughpublicity. Unless more visibility is given to
these programs, it would be difficult to makeit popular amongst corporates.
Social Consciousness is not priority for mostcorporates. To most organizations, it is acosmetic tool to ward off regulatory scrutiny.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR BETTER CSR
Companies should extend their CSR activities in less privileged
states rather than concentrate in resource rich states.
It is essential that companies develop an effective value chain
system of their products through their CSR activities, which is
essential for competing in the global market.
It will give better results if activities are based on a more
participatory approach and touch the grassroots level.
Voluntarism among employees should be encouraged and
institutionalized through recognition and incentives.

RECOMMENDATIONS
There is also need for public-private partnership with well-defined controls and process for the best use of resources forsocial change.
Special training need to be given to business mangers in workingwith social issues.
Participation of small and medium business should beencouraged.
Experience has shown that working with NGOs is moreworthwhile and result-oriented. Joining hands with relatedNGOs is therefore advisable.
