Cotton Quality - United States

1966 Crop

Introduction

The quality of cotton ginned in the United States from the 1966 crop is presented in this re-port. These quality estimates are based on the classification of samples representing approxi-mately ten percent of the 1966 cotton crop. The sample distribution of the various qualities of upland and American-Egyptian cotton was raised to total ginnings as reported by the Bureau of the Census. Quality statistics on the grade and staple of the 1966 crop for the major cotton producing states are presented in this report. Estimates on the micronaire and fiber strength distribution of the 1966 crop are also included. This is the first year fiber strength data have been available

on the entire crop.

A report covering the qualities of cotton on hand August 1, 1967 by principal types of storage will be released as soon as possible after August 1. In addition to quality estimates of cotton in the carry-over, this report will include quality data on the crop, supply and disappearance of up-land cotton for the 1965-67 season with comparative data for preceding years.

* ****** ** ** ***** * * ****** **

Upland cotton ginned from the 1966 crop contained a record low proportion - 18 percent - of Middling and higher White grades. This was the third consecutive season in which the proportion of these higher White grades decreased and set new record lows. Strict Low Middling and Strict Low Middling Plus, combined, accounted for nearly 30 percent of total ginnings compared with 33 percent in the previous season. Light Spotted grades comprised 32 percent of total ginnings this season, the largest proportion since official standards for these grades were promulgated in 1958. Spotted grades were equivalent to nine percent of total ginnings against two percent a year ago. The 1966 grade index was 92.0 (Middling White equals 100) as compared with the 1965 index of 93.0.

The average staple length of the 1966 upland crop was 33.0 thirty-seconds inches, slightly longer than the 1965 average length of 32.8 thirty-seconds inches. Compared with a year earlier, the sharpest changes in the staple distribution of the 1966 crop occurred in the lengths 1-1/32' and 1-3/32". Cotton stapling 1-1/32" accounted for 14 percent of total ginnings against 19 percent a year earlier. Nearly 17 percent of the 1966 ginnings was in the 1-3/32" staple length compared with 12 percent in the preceding season. Cotton stapling 1-1/15" was equivalent to nearly 35 per-cent of the 1965 crop against 34 percent a year ago.

The distribution of the 1966 upland crop by micronaire readings indicated that about two-thirds of total ginnings was in the 3.5-4.9 range. A year earlier, nearly three-fourths of the crop was in this generally preferred mike category. A larger proportion of the 1966 crop miked in the 5.0 and higher category than the previous year. Low mike cotton 3.0 and below, comprised about the same proportion as a year earlier. The 1966 average micronaire reading was 4.2, the sane as in the previous two years. The estimated average fiber strength (zero gage) of the 1966 upland crop

was 81.4 thousand pounds per square inch.

American-Egyptian cotton ginned from the 1966 crop averaged slightly higher in grade than a year earlier and the same in staple length. About 83 percent of 1966 ginnings was Grade 4 and higher against 79 percent in the previous season. Cotton stapling 1-3/8" and longer accounted for 90 percent of the 1966 crop, the same as for 1965.

Cotton ginned from the 1965 crop totaled 9,562,000 bales, according to the Bureau of the Cen-sus. This was the smallest crop since 1946 and compared with 1965 ginnings of 14,933,000 bales and the 1960-64 average of 14,779,000 bales.
