Reflections: On the SpectrumWritten by Rachel Essaff Maher

Attending my oldest son’s Little League practice on a beautiful springday, everything was wonderful. Andy was out on the field, tossing theball back and forth with another boy. Then he was trotting off to thebatting cage with an Assistant Coach. He was giving it his all, a dras-tic improvement over his days on the instructional team last year and

the year before. Second grade has matured him. More importantly, we had been work-ing on his coping skills since his diagnosis with Asperger Syndrome last summer. Liv-ing on what is referred to as the “Autism Spectrum” has been difficult for Andy. Be-fore diagnosis, we struggled to understand why he behaved the way he sometimes does.A bright child with a vast capacity for memorizing facts and a deep love of art and

language, Andy has always been a remarkable kid, but sometimes he has odd habits thatcan be frightening and dangerous, such as eating non-food items like stones, bottlewrappers, and, once, his cousin’s plastic hairclip.  With a grin on his face, Andy came racing toward where I sat on the bleachers. “Mom,I was just in the batting cage! I hit a home run!” So much excitement this year, he hashopes to become a great baseball player now. Out on the field, he hits the ball on thethird swing. He runs slowly to first base. Everything is perfectly fine . . . until thegroundskeeper starts up the riding mower. The noise shatters the melodic sound of children at play. Nervously, I look to where Andy stands at shortstop. Sure enough, thenoise has changed his entire demeanor. On the bleachers, a woman stifles a laugh. Hereyes are on my son.  I wish people understood Asperger or autism in general, that they could show sensi-tivity when a nearly eight year old boy eats a mouthful of red dirt or when he rubs itbetween his fingers and into his hair. I wish they understood that he is really a smartkid who just wants to feel the texture because the sense of touch becomes vitallyimportant when the man on the tractor drives by the field and overwhelms his auditorysensitivity. He covers his ears. He looks pained because it hurts him. And it doeshurt— imagine hearing the sound of a mower as though it were right inside of your ear,

amplified to a decibel that makes you flinch. That is how Andy hears the mower. Andhe is not alone; autism is often associated with an increased sensitivity to sound. Manychildren on the spectrum will cover their ears when a noise becomes too difficult forthem to bear.  Andy has learned to distract himself. This time, he used the red dirt of the baseballdiamond to take his mind off the sound. He is not trying to “act out” or live up to thatold saying, “kids will be kids,” when he acts this way. It has very little to do withparenting, although I am often the target of glares and snarky comments from otherparents and bystanders. What it does have a lot to do with are synapse connections inthe brain, rapidly firing communications between the brain and the auditory senses. If only they could understand that in social environments, he cannot always make senseof his senses. He has to learn to control himself, his urges and sensitivities— and Itrust that he will, in time because the urge to explore and to understand sensation is notthe same as the urge to misbehave. And if I yell at him to stand up or to spit out the reddirt or to not lick the baseball bat, I would only call attention to someone who is un-comfortable with attention, who does not know how to act when people are staring. After his next time at bat, I call him quietly to the fence and speak to him about respon-sibility. I remind him not to eat dirt, not to throw it, not to rub it into his hair. He looks

at the ground. Behind me, I hear people whispering. Inside me, my heart aches andthere is a lump in my throat I cannot seem to swallow. “I’m sorry, Mom.” He says, “I’lltry not to.”  And he does try not to, instead appearing distracted for the rest of practice. And Iknow that it must take every ounce of his self-control to not touch the alluring red dirtbeneath his feet. This practice ends with fried nerves and a tension headache thatlingers for hours, but I know that we will be back next weekend and we will try again.Yes. We will —because he told me today that he is “going to be the best baseballplayer in the history of the world” and you know what? I believe him.
