Second At Sate Fair!By Taz Mulins

While Maynard was nervous

about answering the questions,

as she had no prior knowledge as

to what questions would be

asked, she answered them with

dignity and confidence, bringing

honor to Pikeville High School

and filling our school with pride

once again.

I had a chance to speak with

Maynard after the competition

and asked her what she enjoyed

most about the competition to

which she replied: “My favorite

part of the experience was

meeting all the girls and really

getting to know them.”

According to Maynard,

winning wasn’t everything. From

noon to six when the crowning

began, the girls sat and talked

together about college and

career choices, their lives and

what led them to want to

compete. In those short hours,

Maynard showed the

sportsmanship-like qualities our

school takes pride in having. She

treated the other girls with

respect and kindness.

On August 29-30, 2015,

Pikeville High School’s

cooking team went to the

Kentucky State Fair to

compete in the state level

cooking competition.

They faced teams such as

Fern Creek, Anderson

County, and Harlan

County. After hard work

and fierce determination,

Pikeville’s cooking team

placed second in the

state! Each team member

got four thousand dollars

in scholarship money.

The team prepared a

New Teachers In the Building

By Alexis Sanders and Elina Ahokas

Continued "Cooking

Team"

As we start off this school

year there are five new

teachers in Pikeville High

School. You may have

already met these wonderful

new teachers, but there may

be some other things you do

not know about them. We

wanted to make sure you

knew a little about our

newest staff members.

If you are a sophomore

or senior you may have the

new English teacher, Mr.

Hobbs. He is married to

Brittany and is twenty-eight

years old. He wanted to

come to Pikeville because of

the great reputation we

have. He also told us he

loves it here, and it makes it

easy to be new because of

how polite and helpful

everybone is. He recently

taught at Jenkins, and said it

was a different atmosphere

compared to PHS.

We also have a new art

teacher. Mrs. Lucas is thirty-

six years old and has been

teaching art for eleven years.

She is to be married

September 12 to Josh

Johnson. She wanted to be a

member of Pikeville High

School because of the great

opportunities and the

environment. She has loved

the time she has spent with

us. She also commented

that everyone has been

kind and helpful. It was

hard for her to leave Pike

Central, her previous

school, but she is confident

that she made the right

choice.

Downstairs, we have

two new teachers. One of

them is Mrs. Bishop, who is

forty-eight years old and

married to Jerry Bishop.

She wanted to teach at

Pikeville High School

because of the long

tradition of excellence.

Also, her son, John

Franklin, currently attends

Pikeville Elementary. She

teaches Language Arts in

7th grade. She is happy to

have only one grade to

teach because at her

previous school, Kimper,

she taught grades 5-8.

She and her husband also own

the Men’s Corner, a local

business. She said that it is not

hard to be a new teacher

because she has had a long

teaching career of sixteen years

before coming to Pikeville High

School.

Geometry has a new teacher:

Mrs. Jeanette Belcher. She has

been a teacher for over fifteen

years at schools such as Belfry,

Johnson County Central and

now Pikeville. Belcher said that

it is very different working at

Pikeville than Johnson Central

because of the size difference.

"JC was very, very big," she said.

The judges analyzed the dish

by looking at the layers of the

dish and how they were

prepared. "Politeness was also

important to the judges," said

Zane Akers, who is a member of

the cooking team. The

competition took two days. They

plan to progress even further, to

win at the Kentucky State Fair

next year, and are even thinking

about doing the 4-H competition

this year. Congratulations to the

cooking team and good luck

going forward!

Headline Here

This weekend was a

success to say the least! Our

Panther football boys won

their Pike County Bowl

game. On Saturday, August

29th, the boys played against

the Letcher County Central

Cougars. The final score for

the two teams was 49 to 12.

Daric Pugh scored 4

touchdowns, while Chatlin

Jarrell scored 2, and Andrew

McNamee scored 1. Cody

Charles led the team on the

defensive side for the game.

Pikeville had a total of 3

interceptions by Clay Slone,

Tyler Elkins, and Chatlin

Jarrell. Logan Coleman and

Gunner Edmonds both had

fumble recoveries in the

game on Saturday night.

When asked about how he

thinks this season will go,

Coach McNamee said, “We

try to get better each week,

so I feel this season is going

to be a great one!”

We later asked the newest

member to the Panther

family, Chatlin Jarrell, how

he feels this season will go,

and he responded, “We just

have to take it one day at a

time. We just have to keep

working hard on the field.”

We also asked how it feels

to be a part of the Panther

family, to which he said, “it

feels awesome…. It feels

tremendous!”

The team’s head coach, Allie

Sisco said, “I’m not looking for

a quick turn around time. I’m

looking for tournament time.”

Coach Sisco looks like she has

set her girls on the right path

as she sets her focus on the

tournament rather than a

record.

Although the girls lost

their game against Belfry,

they have been successful

throughout the year. Just last

week, the soccer team

celebrated their first win

against Shelby Valley High

School with an awesome score

of 9-0. When the girls aren’t

playing games, they’re

practicing each day after

school. Coach Sisco works her

team five days a week for two

hours each practice. Its safe

to say the girls get plenty of

practice.

The team also does its own

bonding time outside of

school. They go out to eat

together on occasion and do

other team bonding activities

like tie-dying shirts. Each

activity brings them closer

and helps them to play well

together in the games.

The girls work hard and

give their best efforts in

everything they do. This is

shown with their record of 4-

1. It will be interesting to see

where the rest of the season

takes them!

Soccer Girls Lose

to BelfryBy Lauren McCoy

On Tuesday, September 1,

2015, Pikeville High School

girls soccer team played

Belfry High School on their

home field.

While the girls played a

strong game, Belfry won

with a final score of 4-0.

Some of the girls were upset

to see this loss; however,

many of them learned from

it.

Pikeville High School had

their first all-sport pep rally of

the year on Friday, August 28th.

The pep rally was held to

introduce fall sports including:

cross country, volleyball, soccer,

football, golf, cheerleading, and

dance. We watched the dance

team perform to the song “Watch

Me (Whip/Nae Nae)” with some

football players and even though

the music wasn’t working, they

did a good job. The cheerleaders

did some of their cheers to excite

the audience.

There was also a competition

between each sports team. For

the game, team members had a

partner and each partner held a

balloon. But the thing is, the

balloon was held between both of

the teammates' backs. They had

to get the balloon from one side

of the gym to the other side.

Whoever finished the race first,

won bragging rights.

As always, the pep rally ended

with the Battle Cry Competition.

The 7th grade won both times. “It

was fun and made me more

excited for the upcoming games,”

said freshman, Maura Mccoy.

Also, Leen Alnajjar told us that

“It was entertaining and made

everyone hyped for what the

sports teams have yet to

accomplish.” I agree. The Pep

Rally was a good way to get

everyone excited for upcoming

games.

New Young Democrat Club This Year

By Julie Blackburn

This year, our school has started a

new club for Young Democrats. The

first meeting was held late in August.

Julie Blackburn was elected president

and Elizabeth Tritschler was elected

vice president. The Young Democrats

club offers many opportunities for

community service.

In August, the club went to a

democratic board meeting at the new

courthouse to discuss potential

community service opportunities. The

club is volunteering at Nightmare on

Main this year, and several other

events throughout the year.

Meetings are held on Wednesdays

every two weeks at 3:00p.m. in Mrs.

Cooley’s room. Colleges really like to

see Young Democrats or Young

Republicans on applications because it

shows them that you are interested in

politics and your country.

It isn’t too late to join. The next

meeting is September 23rd at 3:00.

Chris Harris, one of our state

representatives, is coming to talk to the

club. Leslie Combs is coming to the

meeting following that one.

Participate as little or as much as

you want, but the more you participate,

the more opportunities you get to add

to college applications. If you’re

interested, contact Julie or Elizabeth

about joining.

Being the new teacher is like

being the new kid at school. We

asked her if it was difficult making

the adjustment, and she said it was

in some ways. “The flow of things is

something I have to get used to, but

I feel welcome and I enjoy getting to

know everyone.” Mrs. Estep has

some experience teaching at the

college level and says that she’s

“used to teaching older students

who still behaved like middle school

students” so teaching at PJHS

shouldn't be too bad.

We wish Mrs. Estep and all the

new teachers the best of luck as this

new school year begins!

the Building"

Shout Out to Mr.

Thomas!

Happy Birthday!!!

She is forty-one and married to

Terry Belcher. When asked why she

took the job here, she said that "it

was closer to my family" and "it's

just a great school." We asked her if

it was hard to be a new teacher here

and she joked, "Yeah, because it's

hard to find paper for the copier!"

We appreciate her love for her new

school and hope she is here to stay

for a while!

The eighth grade also welcomes a

new English teacher into the Junior.

High, Mrs. Estep. She is thirty-four

and knew Pikeville would be a good

place to teach. “Pikeville has high

expectations of the students and

faculty, and I wanted to be apart of

that.”
