Welcome.It is an honor to present the first edition of our semi-annual magazine, Covenant. We are excited to share the ongoing Covenant story with you through the eyes of some of our 60 staff and faculty and a handful of our nearly 1,500 alumni. Even after being a part of the Covenant story almost since the beginning, I am still awed by how God has answered the fervent prayers of a handful of families to establish a Christian high school on the west side of Indy. That beautiful pursuit has become the reality in which Covenant engages the world through a top-notch college preparatory curriculum, an awe-inspiring fine arts program, and a robust, championship-level athletics program. What an amazing testament to the work God has done! But Covenant is not just another great high school. We remain fully committed to the stewardship of the talents of our community through a permeating biblical worldview in all our programs and in the various church communities in Indianapolis of which we are a part. And as you will see from our alumni contributors, the Covenant experience is permeating many areas of Kingdom work beyond the high school years. Thank you for sharing in the pursuit of providing an excellent, Christ-centered education for a life of scholarship, leadership and service.

Loving One Another:How Covenant Students Are Building Relationships for Christ
A high school experience is one that people will carry with them for the rest of their lives, well beyond the four years spent at the school. One of Covenant’s top priorities for our student body is to encourage them to care for each other in intentional and tangible ways. And for 22 years, students have continually risen to this challenge, working intentionally to bring each person together and foster their relationship with God.
It begins with relationships.Covenant’s philosophy of education is built around one main idea: good education begins and ends with solid relationships. We believe that we are called to show each student how to create long-lasting, meaningful relationships—and not only with their closest friends. We encourage our upperclassmen to build relationships with the underclassmen, and work as a faculty and staff to create opportunities for the students to find common ground and connect.
“I have seen seniors befriend freshmen, a peer group adopt an introverted student, athletes show support at fine arts productions, international students who come to Covenant knowing no one and becoming part of the fabric of the school,” said Donnie Fishburn, Dean of Students. “Despite our different personalities, we must all know and understand the joy that comes from showing the love of Christ to others around us. If we miss out on teaching students this message here at Covenant, then we have failed to truly educate these students completely.”
In 1 Corinthians, the apostle Paul writes that each member of the body of Christ has vital importance. Covenant believes this concept applies to the student body as well. While each student has a unique set of gifts all their own, the goal at Covenant is to come together with each of these gifts to glorify God and bring out the best in each other and the school as a whole.
Relationships are key to our Covenant community.

Covenant understands the importance of creating opportunities for lasting relationships.
While many students at Covenant take the initiative to befriend someone on their own, we also provide opportunities for our students to form new relationships and bond with their existing friends. Bible studies and discipleship groups are available for both guys and girls each week. They focus on the struggles and victories students experience as they mature and grow in their faith.
Riley Lamb is a Senior who came to Covenant her junior year and was overwhelmed by how accepting other students were. “I was invited to Girls Discipleship right at the beginning of my time at Covenant, and it did more than just help me meet others. It helped me understand how Christ-centered Covenant really is,” Riley said.
Our Big Sister/Little Sister program for Covenant girls and Band of Brothers for Covenant guys creates a school culture of unity. Juniors and seniors sign up to be mentors for freshmen and sophomores. Landon Wall chose to form and lead a small group of guys to start the Band of Brothers program. “The Big Sister/Little Sister program at our school seemed to help the girls. We just wanted to create this program for the guys as well,” Landon said. “Groups like these help us learn what it looks like to be godly men in our society.”
The central idea to a lasting and true education must be more than performance and preparation for college. There must be a relational component fostered, modeled, and practiced in order to truly impact a student for life. This is where students develop an understanding of purpose and passion for lifelong learning.
“If we only strive for great accomplishments in art, athletics, math, science, or the humanities, then those students will not value human dignity over their areas of study in their professional lives. This is why we are passionate about relationships at this school. This is why we push our students to intentionally invest in them as much as possible,” said Dean Fishburn.
Covenant believes that building relationships is a skill each student must be taught. These students may only be in high school for four years, but Covenant strives to leave them with a faith in God and a love for one another that lasts a lifetime.

At Covenant Christian High School we understand the value of encouraging students to participate in extra-curricular activities, such as athletics. Aside from the excitement of competing, athletics teach students how to work together as a team, how to set goals, and how to strive to achieve those goal to the best of their ability.
But at Covenant we also know there’s more to success than the numbers on the scoreboard.
First things first: Remember where the focus truly belongs.“If we can hire coaches that model Jesus Christ in their lives, as well as understand their sport and communicate it to their athletes, our programs are going to be successful, regardless of who the players are or what any scoreboard says,” said Athletic Director Andy Gossel of his hiring strategy for the coaching staff.
This experience goes beyond our 18 varsity athletic teams. At Covenant, students also have the opportunity and are encouraged to be involved in several co-curricular activities, providing an experience that may not traditionally be found in a small high school. Covenant coaches set high standards of integrity for their athletes, both in the game and in the hallway—not because they know perfection is attainable, but because they believe that every team member has influence in showing how Christ transforms lives.
This idea of student transformation through athletics is one of the reasons that state championship football coach Larry McWhorter was interested in coaching at Covenant.
“Covenant offers an athletic experience in which students can be a part of a special Christian community, and receive a quality and challenging educational experience,” said Coach McWhorter.
Winning a game is certainly one type of victory, but keeping the hearts and lives of young men and women at the forefront of all that we do is how Covenant Athletics achieves its goals.

The coaches aren’t just here to coach sports. Coach McWhorter was first drawn to Covenant when he participated in a school mission trip and noticed the students’ exceptional character and positive attitude throughout the trip. Though he had recently retired from coaching at a different school, Coach McWhorter was compelled to launch a football program at Covenant because it allowed him the opportunity to join his love for football with his desire to disciple young men.
Coach McWhorter was confident he had found his place at Covenant when he realized exactly what his coaching role would be. He was not hired just to win games, but to carry on a legacy of helping young people enjoy playing a sport in a way that grows their faith.
“It was impressed upon me when I was hired that I was expected to be an example, a leader of young men, and to help the program become part of the Covenant community,” Coach McWhorter said.
It’s not an easy job—but Covenant feels each coach is up to the challenge. Covenant strives to give students foundations they can use for life, long after their years of playing high school athletics have ended.

Don & Phyllis Laskowski at Covenant Celebrates 2017
How One Couple’s “Covenant” Started Another One
COVER STORYIn 1995, a small group of parents on the west side of Indianapolis realized something was missing from their community: they wanted to create a Christian school for their children to grow both academically and in their faith. Word quickly spread and soon the group grew to a handful of freshmen students and five part-time teachers, along with their first principal and CEO, Jim Spencer, and school secretary Karen Schwartzkopf. They met faithfully each day for school in the lower level of Chapel Rock Christian Church, all made possible through a generous donation from Wood-Mizer Products, Inc.
Wood-Mizer was owned by a couple whose commitment, generosity, and support not only made Covenant’s dream a reality, but would also transform its future. Don and Phyllis Laskowski loved to serve their community and bless others the way they had been blessed. They had a long history of supporting missionaries, giving to those in need, and donating their time, talent, and treasure to build up those around them. It wasn’t long before they approached Mr. Spencer about the need for a school building to accommodate the growing number of students, as well as to facilitate the best environment for education.
Halfway through their first school year, the Laskowskis invited Jim and Sue Spencer to their house to talk about the school. The conversation had only just started when Mr. Laskowski told the Spencers that they loved what Jim and the rest of the Covenant team were doing with the school – and they wanted to further their commitment. They wanted to build Covenant a school.
In that moment, their financial promise changed the future of Covenant forever. Mr. and Mrs. Laskowski even had a location in mind for the building—the 23 acres just west of Chapel Rock Christian Church would be a perfect spot for building the future home of Covenant Christian High School.
“It was a conversation I will never forget. It was life-changing for so many people,” Mr. Spencer said. “I quickly came to realize that Don and Phyllis were two of the most generous people I had ever met.”
The next few months were spent working with contractors, lawyers, financial advisors, and architects. Soon, the vision for Covenant was complete, and construction began. Mr. and Mrs. Laskowski were an integral part of this process as well, and offered their knowledge and advice on how to create a learning environment that would impact students, faculty, and staff for years to come.
Twenty-two years later, the school continues to enlighten minds, inflame hearts, and transform lives. Its impact lives on in each student who graduates, in each parent in the Covenant community, in each teacher who has had the opportunity to mold and guide their class, and especially in the vision of those key founders who made it all possible.
Today, Covenant Christian High School is fully accredited with a 350+ member student body, dedicated families, a diverse and talented faculty and staff, and a striking campus.
Decades later, Mr. Spencer still considers it an honor and a privilege to know the Laskowskis. “We are continually blessed by the Covenant dream which became a reality largely because of the generosity of these two special people.”

The Secret of a Student's Success:How Even One Covenant Teacher Can Make a Lifelong Impact
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” – Proverbs 22:6
Covenant Christian High School has always had one mission: To provide an excellent, Christ-centered education and to equip students for a life of scholarship, leadership, and service.
The challenge lies in discovering the best ways in which to achieve this goal. How can Covenant accomplish this mission for each and every student in the four years they spend with us?
The answer is simple: our teachers. Each member of Covenant’s faculty is committed to teaching their students why faith in Christ and a well-rounded education are the biggest tools they’ll need for life.
One example of this dedication at Covenant is math and science teacher Sean Bird.
Teaching Students, Not Subjects“I was not hired to teach physics and calculus, but to teach students,” said Sean Bird, who serves as the science department head as well as a mathematics teacher at Covenant.
Mr. Bird has long understood the value of creating an environment where students grow in both knowledge and faith. He believes that each teacher at Covenant has been charged with the task of working with students to accomplish the mission and vision of the school. When asked how Covenant has helped him achieve these goals, he had no trouble expressing his answer.
“Teaching students who have a relationship with Jesus Christ as Lord and who strive to do things to His glory— this really helps me be successful!” he said.
Even years later, students return to visit Mr. Bird at Covenant to share the impact that memorizing Psalm 19:1 and Romans 1:20 for physics class has had in their lives.

Pursuing ExcellenceMr. Bird has continued to connect and engage with students through various science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) initiatives, such as robotics and rocketry. Under his leadership, Covenant’s Rocket Team has competed at Nationals in Washington, D.C., with Team America Rocketry Challenge. Our Robotics Team has won the highest awards at State, advancing to compete in the US Open and Worlds of VEX Robotics.
“At Covenant, I have been given the freedom to try things,” said Mr. Bird. “We have administrators that encourage us, parents that pray for us, and students that engage with us.”
It’s more than one aspect of teaching that gives Mr. Bird the opportunity to be so successful with such a variety of students. He combines faith, science, and the gifts of those surrounding him to create a learning environment unlike any other.
The secret to a student’s success isn’t the test questions, lesson plans, or even straight As. Covenant students love to learn because teachers like Mr. Bird love to teach, and have dedicated their lives to showing their students how to pursue Jesus in every avenue. Whether a student goes on to college, begins a career, or starts a family, they will leave Covenant with the invaluable lesson that they can succeed in achieving their goals by striving to live out the lessons they learned in the classroom.

Mr. Bird uses various classroom activities and experiments to make learning fun and engaging. His genuine interest in his students, his passion for teaching, and his love of God certainly helps reinforce our feeling that Covenant was the right decision for our family.”

Scholarship.Leadership.
Service.A life of scholarship, leadership, and service: this is Covenant’s mission. These three words provide the framework for how we teach our students, reach out to the community, and make Christ the center of everything that we do. All three are woven together to create the rich tapestry of faith, education, and relationship that makes up the Covenant community.
Covenant alumni are now over 1400 in number, and we realize many are living out our mission in ways we may never know. With each issue of this magazine, it’s our desire to share some of the stories that have been shared with us.
Scholarship
“Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.” Proverbs 9:9
Covenant desires to motivate students to sustain a long-term love for learning. By building a foundation based on scripture and fostering relationships within our academic curriculum, Covenant creates an environment where students and faculty alike encounter the beautiful discovery of connecting their passions with what God has called them to do.
Levi Boxell (‘12), currently a PhD student in Economics at Stanford University, has shown us what it means to embrace scholarship by combining knowledge and God-given gifts in his studies and careers. He has taken his education from Covenant and furthered it by looking for ways Christianity and world issues relate to each other. He says that his desire for continuing education, as well as one day becoming a professor himself, is due in part to his experience as a student at Covenant.

beliefs your own and have a more rigorous foundation for your worldview, which goes beyond academics and impacts your personal life,” Levi said. “I wrote my senior paper on the role of Christianity in development economics, and these are things I’m still thinking about today.”
Scholarship is so much more than obtaining knowledge. It is a joy of learning, a desire to understand how God has created the world, and an ambition to continue learning long after graduation, and we honor Levi in his desire for both.
Leadership
“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” Proverbs 16:3
Leadership is both an immeasurable honor and important responsibility. At Covenant, we believe that in order to lead, one must first understand how to balance the most important tenets of leadership: growth, sacrifice, and commitment. Leaders are willing to grow their own knowledge while helping those around them gain new understanding and explore new ideas. Leaders at Covenant understand the value of sacrificing their own ideas or desires in order to give those around them the best opportunity for success and growth. A leader is always committed to the cause they have undertaken, understanding that God has called them to a purpose that is far greater than they might understand in the moment.
Our Leadership student exemplifies what it means to be a Christ-like leader. Precious Studdard Miliner (’09) is now a labor and delivery nurse at Eskenazi Health in Indianapolis, serving those who are unable to seek or afford many resources for themselves. She doesn’t consider herself someone to be praised—she just strives to do her best to give every patient the care and hope they need.
“It is an honor for me to care for my patients every shift,” Precious said of her career. She added that her time at Covenant was a valuable experience in her life that shaped her into who she is today. “Covenant is one of many entities that God placed in my life to prepare me for my reality and possibly even my future. Covenant taught me how to study, research, and put forth effort into my work.”
Leadership isn’t always appreciated, and many times, is misunderstood. Those who are called to be leaders understand the sacrifice the role requires for the greater good.

Service

Covenant believes that every student, faculty, and staff member has the ability—and responsibility—to use their gifts to serve their school and community. It takes the combined efforts of the entire body of Christ to bring about any change around us. Most of all, it takes willing people to hear the calling God has given them and step forward in boldness and faith to answer that call.
Cara Dobrovodsky Fay (’03) and her husband Kory had the opportunity to serve overseas in Cameroon, translating the Bible into a local language so that everyone would have the chance to read God’s word. After experiencing some health issues, the Fays returned to the States, where they started a new ministry and continued to share the completed work of Christ with those around them.
“God knew all along what was going to happen, so there ‘happened to be’ a missionary couple who already knew the language and had almost all the funds they needed,” Cara recalled. “New Testament translation has begun and we are so thankful that one day, the Nizaa people will have God’s Word in their language.”
Now, Cara serves in one of the most important ministries around: raising godly children in her home.
“I have homeschooled our children from the beginning, so I now consider that my ministry,” said Cara. “It was quite amazing to watch God fill in the gaps when we had to leave Cameroon. God has shown us that His plans our greater than our own.”
Whether you serve in education like Levi, in public healthcare like Precious, or at home and abroad like Cara, you can make a difference for your community and the Kingdom. Covenant celebrates the pursuit of excellence in modeling a life of scholarship, leadership, and service, so that others may know the Lord and pursue His will.
