Ive got some good news, and some not-so-good

    news:

The rst piece of good news is that Lent begins

in February. Thats good news rst because of the

third annual Fat Tuesday Pancake Supper & Varie-

ty Show to be held Tuesday, Feb. 17th beginning

on 6 PM. This is a fundraiser for the Youth Mission

Trip, so the youth will be preparing and serving a

high-carb, high-fat dinner of pancakes and sausag-

es to indulge in before the austere season of Lent

begins. Donaons for dinner will be gratefully ac-

cepted. Then aer dinner -the Variety Show! If

youve aended either of the past two shows, you

know how much fun this will be. And if you want

to present an act of some kind, please contact

    Erin Regan.

Then beginning February 25th and connuing

each Wednesday through March 25 , well have

our Lenten Wednesday Simple Supper and Study.

Well begin at 6 PM with a pot-luck supper and

then at 6:30, spend an hour studying a curriculum

based on Philip Yanceys wonderful book Vanish-

    ing Grace.

The second piece of good news is that you can

now give to the church electronically using a cred-

it card. Go to the church website

    (www.centralonthesquare.org) and click on the

Donate buon on the upper right side of the

home page, and you will be directed to a church

Paypal page to make your donaon. Some church

members who are giving electronically have said

they miss the act of pung their oering in the

plate during the worship service. One suggested

we create cards of some kind to put in the plate

indicang that the person is an electronic giver.

To that end, we have created Electronic Giver

cards. If you would like a supply, please contact

church secretary Roberta Lawyer and well put

them in your church mailbox. They will also be

available in the back of Friendship Hall and Sanc-

    tuary during worship services.

The not-so-good news concerns recent child

protecon legislaon passed by the Pennsylva-

nia state government (House bill 435). The law

will require two things of Central. First, that we

develop, adopt and enforce a Child Protecon

Policy that governs ALL interacons with chil-

dren and youth in the church. Among other

things, this policy will require there to be two

adults in all classes aended by children and

youth; that there be windows in the doors of all

rooms where there are children; and that every-

one who works with children and youth is now a

mandatory reporter, required to report sus-

pected child abuse. Second, the law requires

everyone who serves in any way in our minis-

tries to children and youth to undergo a series

    of background checks.

Because of the far-reaching eects of this

law, the Session appointed a Task Force to de-

velop our Child Protecon Policy and to develop

and carry out a process for geng all our teach-

ers and helpers through the background checks.

We are required to complete all the background

    checks by June 30th .

    NEWSLETTER DEADLINE

    SUNDAY, February 22nd

With gratitude, Central has received a letter of

thanks for its financial support from the followingorganization:

    CONGREGATIONAL MEETINGSUNDAY FEBRUARY 22 NOON

There will be a Congregational Meeting on Sunday February 22, 2015,at 12:00 noon, following the 11:00 AM worship service. This is the An-nual Meeting (Part II) and the purpose is to receive the 2014 AnnualReport, including the 2015 budget. A light lunch will be served.

JOY VILLAGE UPDATEAdapted from an article by Rudy Miller:

In November 2014, two teams of teacherstraveled to the tea estates surrounding the Naza-

reth Hospital, to search for tea pickers children

who have never attended school. Even thoughKenyan law provides education for all, lack of

money for books or uniforms prevents manyfrom attending school.

The teachers found 83 children, from age 6 to13, who werent attending school. Typical was

Sylvia, age 8, who was rejected by her birth

mother and forced to be a house girl for anotherfamily. No wages, no education, no lovejust a

    blanket and a little food.

Each child was invited for an interview to the

Allamano School, part of the Tree of Life organ-ization, as are Nazareth Hospital and Joy Vil-

lage. What would they think of a school, a com-pletely new environment? As one 6-year-old girlasked when she looked around the classroom,

Can I sit there and start learning? And that is

    now her desk.

Let us never forget to pray for Joy Village,Nazareth Hospital, the Allamano School, and all

the institutions that are part of the Tree of Lifeorganization. May God continue to give the

medical staff and the educators the wisdom,

stamina and courage to shepherd children whom

most of the world has forgotten.

    MINISTRY DUTIES FOR JANUARY

Note for Greeters: If you have a queson or unable to fulll your Sunday as Greeter, please

    contact Don Weber at 262-0087.

    The Pastors Notes

We certainly will comply with the law, and hope it will help curtail the awful abuse of children.

The most pressing need presented by the new law is more teachers and helpers to work with

our children and youth. If we do not have two adults in each classroom, we cannot conduct

Sunday School for our children and youth. Please be in prayer for this crical need, and be lis-

tening for Gods sll small voice -he may call you to serve!

P.S. -one more piece of good news. The Parish Visitor posion is now funded in the 2015

church budget and we will start the search to ll this posion shortly.

Contact Trena Oyler, 261-5727 or Cindy Happel, 830-1760 for more information.

    Were looking for

    volunteers!

Here at Central, we love and value our children and youth. It is our goal that everyone who comes

through our doors finds this to be a safe and welcoming place. Due to the recent crimes against childrenin our state, Pennsylvania has recently passed laws that strive to protect children and youth. These laws

include more strict background checks for employees and volunteers and new rules on mandatory re-

porting of suspected abuse. There are also guidelines to minimize the opportunity for abuse to takeplace. These include having windows in doors to provide a clear line of sight and the 2 adult rule --

which states that there are two adults present wherever there are children and youth.

So now you know the motivation behind this article! We need to comply with these regulations so that

we can continue to minister to children and youth. In order to do that,

We Need You!Teachers and leaders are already in place.

Now we need the 2ndadult in the room!

Requirements? You must love Jesus! You must love children and youth! You must be willing to

go through the mandatory background screenings and clearances.

When and where can you volunteer?SUNDAYS:
