    8/168 CPM QUARTERLY VOLUME 12, NUMBER 1 WINTER 2010

CPM PHOTOGRAPHER FEATURED INWISCONSIN STATE JOURNALOn Saturday, October 17, 2009, the front page of Te Wisconsin State

Journal featured an article on CPM memberBILL PIELSTICKERSprojectrephotographing the work of the late-19th Century photographer H.H.Bennett. In what he projects to be a three to ve year project, Pielsticker, incollaboration with CPM memberTRACY MADISON, has completed 10 of 15 planned images for the rst phase of this project.

Phase 1 is focused on the area around the Dells as well as several other sitesin Sauk County. Tese include Bennetts Leaping the Chasmat Stand Rock,a view of Devils Lake from Devils Doorway, and anther of Bennetts morefamous images,Under the O erhanging Rock, a triptych Bennett manually

merged on a single sheet of paper when printing.

he exhibition of the paired images from Phase 1 will begin next summerand will include a showing and presentation during PhotoMidwest2010 in October. Plans include presenting Bennetts work and thecurrent view, ideally shot from the same perspect ive as the original, sideby side in black and white. Where room permits, the current view willalso be shown in color.

As photographers, members may be interested in some of the di culties Pielsticker hasencountered in this work. Several of Bennetts images are fairly intimate, meaning asmall change in camera location can make a large change in perspective. In other cases, few common points exist between the original image and todays perspective, making lining them up a challenge.

In the case of Under the O erhanging Rockwhich was featured in a recent WiscGeological Survey calendar, Pielsticker notes it has taken ve visits to the siteshoots for me to realize that Bennett had to have built a platform to get h igh enoughthe e ect he was a er. Tats what Ill do in the spring, now that Ive gured it out I

Members and others can keep track of the project at www.hhfastforward.com. Teis still under construction but o ers some blog entries and several paired imageTe Wisconsin State Journal article can be found via a search engine online.
