physicians will likely be a long-term, ongoing endeavour, according to the city’s Chief Administrative Officer.
At city council on Monday, CAO Wayne Staudt touched on the issue during the administrative update portion of the meeting.
Staudt said actively recruiting physicians will be a practice that like-ly won’t be ending anytime soon.
“You can look at this — in my opinion — as an ongoing project,” Staudt said. “There will always be
doctors coming and going — an on-going recruitment process is some-thing that you can probably expect to go on for many, many years.”
Back in early 2014, the city joined forces with a number of other organi-zations to look for solutions to the doctors shortage in the region. It in-cludes the City, the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce, the Regional District of East Kootenay, Interior Health Authority and East Kootenay Division of Family Practices.

Print Solutions is branching out and add-ing another business into the fold, acquiring Murray’s Office Plus in late January.
Stephen Wik, the Copier Division Manag-er for Rocky Mountain Print Solutions, said that Murray’s Office Plus will be retaining its own name into the transition to new ownership.
“There’s a lot of peo-ple who identify with that name and we want to maintain not just the name, but the character of the business, the character of what Car-ol’s created is going to be carried on,” Wik said.
Carol Murray, who has been running the business for over 20 years, said she felt it was time to look at retire-ment and wanted to keep the business in local ownership. Her
daughter worked with Wik for a few years at Rocky Mountain Print Solutions, and the dis-cussions to sell began out of that relationship.
“We started chatting and it became evident that it was quite a good fit. I was looking to be able to retire because I find the furniture and
the work is quite strenu-ous so it’s time to pass it on to younger people,” said Murray.

Be on the lookout for canine lipomas
Being a responsible pet owner means taking various steps to ensure the health and well-being of a companion animal. Providing food and shelter are just some of the basics. Ad-ditionally, pet parents should regularly observe their pets and interact with them to ensure their pets are healthy.
Petting and handling a pet is not only good bonding time be-tween owner and pet, but also presents opportunities to ex-amine the animals’s body. These informal examinations may alert to certain conditions, such as the presence of fl eas or unusual growths, early on so that further action can be taken.
Oftentimes pet owners discover their dogs have unusual lumps under the skin. While these may be problematic tu-mors, the lumps may be lipomas, which are largely harmless.
According to Lipoma.net, an informative Web site for pet owners, lipomas are benign, relatively slow-growing, fat-fi lled tumors that are quite common in dogs, especially as they get older. Lipomas are not cancerous, and they should be soft and easily manipulated beneath the dog’s skin. Lipomas can develop anywhere, but they’re usually found on the belly and chest of the dog. The exact cause of these fatty tumors is unknown, but it seems to be a part of aging in some canines.
Discovering a lipoma can be disconcerting to dog owners. Feeling a large lump on a pet may prompt a visit to the veteri-narian’s offi ce. A veterinarian can often distinguish a lipoma from another more serious condition by simply feeling the lump. Otherwise, the vet may recommend some diagnostic tests, such as needle aspiration, where a specimen of cells is collected. These cells will be looked at under a microscope or a biopsy of the lipoma tissue may be taken.
There is nothing a pet owner can do to prevent their dog from getting lipomas, but they can watch to make sure the lipoma does not grow too large or become uncomfortable for the dog. A lipoma that grows large enough to impede mobility or is bothersome to the dog, who may bite and lick at it, may need to be removed. Together with their vet, pet owners can make the determination as to what is best for the animal.
Dogs that have one lipoma may be likely to develop more. Just because the lump looks and feels like others, it is best to have it checked by a vet as a precaution. Although rare, some-times a lipoma can be malignant, and this is called a liposar-coma. These tumors don’t spread quickly to other areas of the body, but since lipomas in general seem to infi ltrate muscle and other tissue in the body, they can be diffi cult to remove and recurrence is common.
Pet ownership requires keeping abreast of pet health issues. Lumps on an animal may not be serious, but they are worthy of a check by a veterinarian.

permit that will allow Elizabeth Lake lodge to construct a new build-ing one-story, four unit building on its property. At the Monday, Feb. 23 meeting, council ap-proved two permits around the Lodge’s de-velopment: the first al-lows a smaller setback of four metres, from six, and the second permits the construction to ac-tually go ahead.
The latter permit is the Highway Corridor Community Develop-ment Permit which en-ables the construction of a new commercial building on the proper-ty.
That building will be the one-story lodging mentioned above and is part of a multi-year pro-gram to replace the orig-inal motel lodging units with updated facilities.
George Freitag, the registered owner of the property applied for the permit to build a one storey, four-unit lodging to run parallel to the ex-isting fence line.
“We feel we have achieved a polished look to our property along Highway 3, as well as the Elizabeth Lake property line,” Freitag wrote in the application. “The third phase will transform the current RV Park along Wattsville Road into a lodging property that is consistent in both look and feel.”
City staff noted that the approximately 220 square metre (2,370 square ft.) building will be constructed with in-sulated concrete form walls and a wood truss, gable style roof. Exterior walls will be finished with “Creme” coloured stucco and the roof sheathed with “Char-coal’.’ coloured asphalt shingles. Design ele-ments include decora-tive roof-dormers, and multi-pane glazing with wall mounted flower boxes, which provides a consistent look with ex-isting buildings
Frietag said the plan is to commence build-ing at the start of August, 2015 and finish con-struction April 2016.
Prior to that, council
also approved the De-velopment Variance Permit that decreases the minimum setback on the exterior side of Elizabeth Lake Lodge.
The development variance is needed be-cause the current set-back is six metres, but Freitag said in a letter to Rob Price, the city’s community planner, that the lodge hopes to have the rear of the building four metres from the property line. The building will re-place an existing RV parking area.
Freitag noted that the requested relaxation of the zoning bylaw would enable a more efficient site layout and facilitate safer traffic circulation through the site.
He said it would also enable improvements to accessible parking for persons with disabilities.
“We wish to continue to offer persons with disabilities access to the mini golf,” Freitag wrote. “We have a very steady clientele who require accessible parking and unloading. This access and parking would be cut-off if we bring the footprint of the building forward.”
City staff noted that letters were circulated to adjacent property own-ers and occupants in-forming them of the De-velopment Variance re-quest and asking for comment. No responses had been received in re-sponse to the circula-tion when the report was written for Mon-day’s meeting. Staff gave three reasons for its sup-port of the application: “The proposed setback reduction will enable improvements to site traffic circulation and additional space for ac-cessible parking within the site; The proposed variance of the exterior side yard is located adja-cent to a public road right-of-way, which should result in mini-mal, if any, negative im-pacts on adjacent prop-erties; An existing, solid wood landscape fence along the exterior side yard will provide screen-ing from the public right-of-way (Wattsville Road).”

says the City of Kimberley is “at the mercy of the process” when it comes to finally get-ting the Sun Mine online and hooked up to the BC Hydro grid.
“There’s only one piece of infrastructure, a transformer
to the substation,” he said. “Ev-erything else is complete.
“Once the transformer is here, BC Hydro can test it and flip the switch. But it probably won’t be until late April.”
There is not a lot of cost as-sociated with the delay, the Mayor says because most work is still under the project man-
agement contract with ConEn-ergy.
SunMine will have over 4,000 solar-cell modules, mounted on 96 solar trackers which follow the sun’s move-ment, maximizing solar expo-sure.
It will be western Canada’s largest scale solar project, and
the first solar project in B.C. to sell power to the BC Hydro grid.
The project is being sup-ported by Teck, whose involve-ment, first announced in 2011, includes providing land and site infrastructure as well as a $2 million contribution to-wards the project.

“The city does participate in that, as do many other others in our community,” Staudt said.
City staff noted that Cran-brook has been, and will continue to be, represented in the recruitment effort pri-marily by the Economic De-velopment Officer, along with members of the coun-cil.
They noted several suc-cesses, including the recruit-ment of three new physi-cians in six months, the hir-ing of a recruitment coordi-nator through the East Koo-tenay Division of Family
Practices, and the establish-ment of a Red Carpet Com-mittee led by Chamber of Commerce member Brian Rhodes.
The Red Carpet Commit-tee itself held a meeting on Feb. 17 to review progress to date and look at new oppor-tunities to pursue for physi-cian recruitment this year.
Staudt noted the Red Car-pet Committee is an ambas-sadorial program in which recruitment candidates are welcomed to the community and hosted by local officials and leaders from the busi-ness community.
“This process enables the candidates to get a good feel for Cranbrook as a commu-nity for establishing their practice and the committee’s efforts played a major part in bringing the new physicians to Cranbrook,” wrote city staff.
The committee’s efforts will continue into 2015.
Coun. Danielle Cardozo said the work has been amazing and is much need-ed.
“I’ve had a lot of people come to me and they don’t have a family doctor,” Cardo-zo said. “And for those who do have a family doctor, I
know I’ve had my own expe-rience of having to wait two weeks for an appointment.”
Cardozo brought up an online service called Medeo — a company that allows B.C. residents to speak to doctors through video chat.
“It’s not for if you have an injury, or something like that,” she said, but works well for something like a pre-scription refill.
“You can use an app and talk to a B.C. doctor online and get that prescription re-filled, and they’ll sent it right to Shoppers or Walmart,” Cardozo said. “But then it frees up our doctors to deal
with more critical cases and visits.”
She added that much of the younger generation is on smartphones and comput-ers, so it could help to free up doctors for seniors, who may be less comfortable with that technology.
Coun. Tom Shypitka sits on the Red Carpet Commit-tee and he said Coun. Cardo-zo was correct.
“These are the services that we are looking at imple-menting, as far as the Red Carpet committee is con-cerned, to free up doctors times,” Shypitka said, “Whether it be medical or
social… lots of issues that take up a lot of time for doc-tors when they could be working on a new client.”
Shypitka said he attended the first meeting and while it’s a relatively new commit-tee, there were a lot of good ideas shared.
“They happened to bring several doctors last year to Cranbrook,” he said.
Mayor Lee Pratt noted there is a lot of competition among B.C. communities for doctors.
“We’re not the only ones competing for it,” ” Pratt said. “Every centre in B.C. is com-peting for that.”
“Rocky Mountain Print Solu-tions—it works hand in hand. It will be your complete office. We can do your photo-copiers and copying, we can do your print-ing, we can do your stationary, we can do your furniture.”
For Wik, the furniture side of Murray’s Office Plus was a no-ticeable aspect of the business.
“There’s a few things that we saw in Carol’s business that re-ally attracted us. First, a local presence for furniture—I don’t see having a stale date because
of the physical nature of furni-ture. Shipping is complicated, installing has a skill set to it and takes time,” Wik said.
“The order-furniture-online experience I think, regardless of the progression of technology, is always going to have a vul-nerability when people have to make it work. You’re going to need that expert advice and the local set up.”
In the future, Wik sees shared trips and staffing be-tween the two businesses.
Rocky Mountain Print Solution has regional coverage from Creston to Elkford to Invermere and the Canadian Border, while Murray’s Office Plus has been more local with Cranbrook and Kimberley.
As for now, Wik and his staff are busy learning as much as they can from Murray to keep the business running as is in the present before planning and expanding for the future.
Murray will stay on for roughly the next year to show the ropes before fully retiring.

The Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce has a record number 76 nominees for the 2015 Business Excellence Awards.
The Chamber com-pleted the tally after the close of nominations last Friday and declared an unprecedented number of individual nominees this year.
Chamber Executive Director David D. Hull working on his first Business Excellence Awards since taking the Chamber helm at the start of the year was very impressed.
“The 76 nominees
actually comprised of well in excess of 100 nominations as many very excellent business-es, professionals, and organizations were nominated numerous times.”
For the first time the Business Excellence Awards nominees will be adjudicated in a jur-ied panel system at the beginning of March.
“We have a three per-son panel conducting interviews in a prefor-matted manner,” said Hull. “We are confident that the nominees will really enjoy their meet-ing with the panel and to be given the opportu-
nity to expand and dis-cuss their individual businesses and organi-zations.”
Award recipients will be announced as part of the Business Excellence Awards gala evening Saturday, April 11 at the St. Eugene Golf Resort and Casino.
Hull is encouraging gala attendees to secure their tickets early as the capacity is capped at 230 and with so many nominees tickets will be in demand for what is certain to be an early sold out event.

Before his death in 1791, John Wesley had slightly more
than 1,500 publications to his name. The found-er of Methodism, Wes-ley’s literary output was so great he had his own publishing house, which he simply called the Book Room. The in-come generated from The Book Room fi-nanced numerous Methodist charitable and missionary projects in England and the newly created United States Wesley’s death was felt heavily in both places, and obituaries and remembrances peppered newspapers for weeks. His friend and personal physician John Whitehead deliv-ered Wesley’s eulogy, which he gave to The Book Room to publish. Demand was for White-head’s speech was so high it went through 4 separate printings in less than a month.
The Church, the Book Room, and the public all clamoured for a biography of Wesley, and Whitehead was seen as the perfect per-son to write it. Wesley must of thought so too; in his will he left all his personal letters, diaries, and unpublished man-uscripts to Whitehead and Thomas Coke (Wesley’s successor), to “to be burnt or pub-
lished as they see fit.” Since Coke was stuck in America at the time, ev-eryone agreed White-head would inherit the papers, and begin work immediately on Wes-ley’s biography.
And then everything went so horrible wrong.
The difficulty began when a second will sur-faced. Everything was exactly the same as the original, except for a new rider which left the property of the Book Room not to Whitehead or Coke but to the print-ers who worked there. Since this seemed to cover the physical ma-terial of the publishing house (printing presses, paper rolls, etc.) only, it appeared everything could proceed as planned.
Until a third will ap-peared, this time with a new rider leaving all his published works and their copyrights to Thomas Coke. Since
Coke was still overseas, Whitehead met with the Church’s trustees, hop-ing to proceed as nor-mal. For a flat fee of 100 pounds, Whitehead was officially contracted to write Wesley’s biogra-phy. After agreeing to this, Whitehead began to feel the Church was taking advantage of him. He contacted the trustees the next day, asking for a new con-tract which would give him one half of all prof-its from every book sold for the first two years of publication. The trust-ees readily agreed, but the catch here is these were entirely different trustees than the ones Whitehead made his original deal with. These new trustees had no knowledge of the original contract made the day before.
While Whitehead was securing a more lu-crative position for him-self, an unauthorized biography of John Wes-ley hit the shelves. ‘An Impartial Review of the Life and Writings, Pub-lic and Private Charac-ter, of the Late Rev. Mr. John Wesley’ was writ-ten by John Colet. Claiming to be a relative of Wesley’s, Colet’s bi-ography hinted at scan-dal and intrigue. De-nounced by the Church and the press, Colet re-taliated by promising a
second volume of his work with even more scandal and intrigue.
Although no one ap-peared to take any of Colet’s work seriously, the Church really need-ed to publish their own authorized and authori-tative account of Wes-ley’s life. Pressure was on Whitehead to begin work immediately. A large conference of Methodist leaders soon took place, with the hopes of working out a publishing schedule for Whitehead’s book. The meeting had barely started when White-head learned the Church would only honour his first con-tract, the one for a flat fee of 100 pounds.
When he brought up the more lucrative sec-ond contract, the sec-ond group of trustees he met with denied that heir meeting ever took place. Feeling cheated, Whitehead demanded a third contract, this time giving him even more profit, editorial control, and lifelong copyright. Discussions became heated, leaders began to take sides, and the sole issue of the biogra-phy was beginning to split the Methodist Church.
Outside of the con-ference, a second unau-thorized biography ap-peared, this one a large three-volume affair written by John Hamp-son. At one time a
Methodist preacher, Hampson had left the church years earlier, but remained enamoured of Wesley. A fair treat-ment of Wesley by any standards, Hampson’s work was still de-nounced by the Church.
With these unautho-rized works appearing, the Church felt they had no choice by to but to acquiesce to White-head’s demands. They were just about to do sign on the dotted line when they were happily interrupted.
Thomas Coke had returned from America, and he was not at all amused by Whitehead’s “demands for lucre and editorial autonomy.” He relieved Whitehead of the “burden” of writing John Wesley’s biogra-phy, and instructed him to return all of Wesley’s personal papers to the Church.
Why Whitehead sim-ply didn’t wash his hands of the whole af-fair is anyone’s guess, but he not only refused Coke’s demands, but stated he would publish the biography outside of the Church, retaining all profits for himself.
For his part, Coke tried to reason with Whitehead, even agree-ing to double the origi-nal fee he had agreed to to 200 pounds. White-head would not be dis-suaded.
Coke filed a lawsuit against Whitehead for holding Wesley’s papers ransom, which clearly
violated the terms and conditions of Wesley’s will. Coke also expelled Whitehead from Meth-odist Church.
U n b e l i e v a b l y , Whitehead refused to hand over the papers, even when legally or-dered to do so.
By this time, a third unauthorized biogra-phy appeared, this one being the promised sec-ond volume of John Co-let’s ‘Impartial Re-view…’. This volume did indeed include scandal, reprinting love letters Wesley had written a young women who was not his wife. These let-ters turned out to be fraudulent, earning even more contempt for Colet from the Church and the press.
In the spring of 1792, Thomas Coke pub-lished the authorized ‘Life of Wesley.’ It was a massive success, even though Coke was forced to base it on nothing but his own recollections and anecdotes.
Stubborn to the end, Whitehead published his own biography in 1795, using the very same title as Coke. While not much new came to light, White-head used the first part of his book to rail against the Church and Coke’s mistreatment of him.

Pretzels come in many flavors, shapes, and sizes — not unlike us. These treats are great with cheese or other
dips or just by themselves. But the other day, I learned (to my very great surprise, I might add) that pretzels actually have an historical place in the celebration of Lent.
If you take a moment to look at the typical twist pret-zel, you can see that it is a roll of dough which has been twisted into the familiar shape we all know — in-dented and roughly circular, with arms which then bend back over themselves until it becomes a pretzel. I discovered that this was a com-mon prayer position from the early 600’s —the believer would fold his or her arms over each other across the chest and then lift their hands to the shoulders.
From early times, Lent was a time to refrain from indulging in rich foods, in-cluding milk, eggs and fats. That is the ori-gin of the custom of eating pancakes on “Fat Tuesday”, the day before Ash Wednes-day. In the days before refrigeration, it was a way of using up fats and milk and eggs in the household. The name “mardi gras” actually means “Fat Tuesday”, a time of feasting on rich foods before the absti-nence and fasting of Lent.
During Lent, many Christians abstained from all forms of meat and animal prod-ucts, while others made exceptions for food like fish. Pope St. Gregory (d. 604), writing to St. Augustine of Canterbury, is-sued the following rule: “We abstain from
flesh, meat, and from all things that come from flesh, as milk, cheese and eggs.”
With such strict fasting laws, the general rule was that a person would have one meal a day, in the late afternoon or eve-ning, and smaller snacks to maintain strength through the day. A need arose for
a very simple food which would fulfill the abstinence and fasting laws.
Enter the pretzel. It seems that the first pretzel was baked by a young monk in a monastery in southern France or northern Italy,
twisting leftover scraps of bread into the shape of a person’s arms crossed over the chest and making a soft Lenten bread of water, flour and salt.
In his book “Catholic Customs and Tra-ditions”, Greg Dues writes “These little breads were shaped in the form of arms crossed in prayer and were called bracellae (Latin, ‘little arms’). Among the Germans, the word became ‘bretzel’.”
His invention caught on in a big way. The doughy bread was a treat, often hand-ed out to wandering merchants, and be-came a very popular Lenten food in the Middle Ages. It was thick, satisfying, trans-ported easily, and could be kept safely.
Pretzels soon became associated with good luck, long life and spiritual whole-ness. They often show up in prayer books and paintings of the time. A prayer book used by Catherine of Cleves shows St. Bar-tholomew surrounded by pretzels. This connection with good luck carried the
pretzel to other holidays, including New Year’s Day when children in Germany would hang them around their necks. In Switzerland, the pretzel shape was used as a marriage knot, and couples would pull on a side of the pretzel on their wedding day. It puts a whole new spin on “tying the knot”.
A popular legend has it that the hard pretzels which we buy in stores today came about in the early 17th century when a young monk fell asleep while they were baking. He let the fire begin to die out; when he awoke, he restarted the fire and overcooked the pretzels.
It sounds like a nice story, but I’m in-clined to believe a much more prosaic story that Julius Sturgitz created the first commercial pretzel bakery in Pennsylva-nia in 1861. Many believe that his factory created the first hard pretzels. These crunchy, salty snacks lasted longer in an air tight environment than soft pretzels did, allowing them to be sold in stores far away from the bakery and kept on shelves much longer.
These days, pretzels (along with chips and popcorn) are the most popular snacks in North America. You can buy them in al-most any flavor you might want, from gua-camole to cinnamon to various nuts and seeds.
The next time you have a pretzel, won-der at the amazing and diverse history of another food which we all take for granted.

Cranbrook was, is and always will be a cultural melting pot. The Scots, Irish, English and Welsh settled down
side-by-side with the French, German, Pol-ish, Russian, Chinese, Japanese and count-less others.
Settling down side-by-side did not nec-essarily mean seeing eye-to-eye, however. Although the majority of the Cranbrook townspeople chose to get along as well possible in terms of commerce it did not mean everyone co-existed gladly; invisible subdivisions were prevalent for many years. Some, such as Chinatown and the First Nations reserve were well demarcat-ed.
Of course, as families became blended and extended, the old lines became less defined and numerous immigrant con-claves became nothing more than memo-ries best forgotten.
Of all the races that made their mark in the early days of Cranbrook, it is undoubt-edly the Chinese who were the most visi-ble, the most deliberated, the most misun-derstood, at times the most feared and who suffered the greatest ethnic slings and arrows. Still, Chinatown survived in Cran-brook from the earliest days until the 1950s. It is gone now, only a single building remains on 7th Avenue to mark the once thriving com-munity.
The history of Cran-brook’s Chinatown may be told here in a partial way but it is unlikely that an accurate, well-bal-anced account will ever be properly re-corded. There may be a treasure trove of letters and writings somewhere in the world concerning the days of Chinatown, written by those who lived there, but there appears little in the history vaults to work with at this point in time. What writings there are consist primarily of newspaper and other accounts penned by white males who often resented, if not detested, the presence of the Chinese community.

For the HuntersA recent letter called into question my
commitment to work as the MLA for Koo-tenay East on behalf of resident hunters.
Over the last 14 years I have worked hard to protect the right of rural people to use the land we live on. I have fought against those would shut us out of the bush, a powerful U.S. Senator who wanted to make a park in the Flathead and have tried to represent the diverse interests of those who live here, work here and recre-ate here.
I’ve worked over the years with every minister in charge of the wildlife allocation file to advocate for resident hunters.
In 2004, I had my Private Members Bill passed, the Heritage Right to Hunt and Fish.
The BC Wildlife Federation presented me with a Life Membership for that ac-complishment and over the years I have steadfastly stood up for resident hunters,
snowmobilers, quadders, hikers, for more access and for proper wildlife manage-ment that includes a more sensible, ag-gressive management of predators.
I have fought in a mostly urban world for the grizzly bear hunt.
Most recently, I went public with my concerns about the proposed General Open Season for sheep in Region 4 for guides and persuaded government to eliminate that hunt.
I have tried to be fair to the guide outfit-ters because they are an important indus-try for our small rural communities and they too deserve to be heard. But I have always looked out for the resident hunter. Whether it’s the trail hound hunters, the sheep hunters or just the deer and elk hunters like me, I sit in on dozens of dis-cussions in Victoria where often I am the only voice for hunters.
For 12 years, I was the only MLA in BC who bought a hunting license every year. Today there is one more, a BC Liberal from
Prince George.Anyone who suggests that I am not a
friend of resident hunters is either un-aware of my record or is simply trying score political points.
As a member of cabinet, I support the allocation policy government has today. Both resident hunters and guides are un-happy with the policy, which may be a sign that it is balanced.
I urge resident hunters to work with other hunters, including guides, and focus on growing our wildlife populations, in-creasing habitat and to help me convince decision-makers that we need to better manage predators. As hunters, we need to know who are friends are and to cooperate in protecting our right to hunt.
Let’s stop fighting amongst ourselves and get some important work for wildlife done together.

At best the Chinese were referred to as “Celestials” or “Johns.” At worst, they were termed “yellow devils,” the “scourge of the working man”, or a “barbaric race incapa-ble of being civilized.” This made things rather tricky on a day to day basis consid-ering that Chinatown occupied two city blocks directly across from the CPR sta-tion for over fifty years.
The first intimation of the Chinese in Cranbrook was noted in April, 1898, when The Cranbrook Her-ald stated that local con-tractor Mr. Kaake (pro-nounced “Cake;” who also built the former Cross Keys Hotel) had complet-
ed a building to be occupied by, perhaps unsurprisingly, a Chinese restaurant. Owing to a disagreement between the two parties, the deal fell through. On May 3rd it was reported, “One Lung and Two Soxe have contracted for the erection of laun-dry buildings.” A tongue-in-cheek news item that no doubt received some laughs but also set the trend for many years to come, that is to say, low jokes at the ex-pense of a local minority.
By early June, 1898, not only the local
newspaper but also both The Silverton Sil-vertonian and The Nelson Economist com-mented on the fact that “the first Chinaman has appeared in Cranbrook … and will act, doubtless, as the forerunner of many of his kind. While only one is to deal with, the citizens of that town [Cranbrook] had bet-ter pitch him out neck and crop. Once let John get a foothold and it is off with the town.”
In early 1899, Sing Lee constructed the Vancouver Laundry west of the Herald of-fice on 9th Avenue. This was, in fact, the beginning of what would soon become Chinatown; roughly the area between 5th and 7th Avenues and Van Horne and 1st Street. One month later William Matheson erected a laundry building on 7th Avenue for Zim Zum. (And let it be clearly stated at this point that there is no assurance that any Chinese names from the early days were reported accurately.)

It was only fitting that the Kimberley Dynamit-ers used another one-goal victory to get past the Creston Valley Thunder Cats in Game 5 of their Eddie Mountain Division semifinal Thursday night.
With 673 people packing the Kimberley Civic Centre, the Nitros and Thunder Cats treat-ed fans to another nail-biting affair that saw the home team come out on top with a 2-1 victory
and 4-1 series triumph. “We didn’t give up a
lot of breakaways and two-on-ones. They kept a good high guy, we kept a good high guy and that’s kind of what the series became,” said Dy-namiters head coach Jerry Bancks Thursday night. “That’s why the scores were as low as they were. I’ve never seen anything like it in Junior B.
“All three goalies that played were phenome-nal. You didn’t give the
other team much and they didn’t give us much. We got some power-play goals and they didn’t. That’s probably the big-gest difference.”
By far the low-est-scoring first-round series in the KIJHL play-offs, the Dynamiters held the Thunder Cats to a mere four goals over the course of the five-game series.
“Tyson Brouwer -- he keeps us in most of our games,” said Dynamit-ers captain Jason Rich-ter. “If it wasn’t for him, we wouldn’t be able to keep the goals down.
“But we have guys out there who are will-ing to block shots, no matter what. We have guys 10 seconds left in the game, we have guys five seconds left in the game laying down to block shots. That’s just the kind of team we are.”
It was a defensive se-ries for the ages that fea-tured a three-way goal-tending stand-off be-tween Nitros netminder Tyson Brouwer and the Thunder Cats duo of Brock Lefebvre and Mitch Martell.
The Nitros managed nine goals over five games, one of which was a buzzer-beating
empty-net tally in Game 4. To say offense was at a premium in this series would be a massive un-derstatement.
“When your team believes that much and puts that much on the line, to come up with a series win like that -- Creston was a very good team in this series,” Brouwer said Thursday. “There was no easy game in this series. Credit to them and credit to the boys for fin-ishing them off in five.”
In all, the Dynamiters scored six of their nine goals with the man ad-vantage, while the Thun-der Cats were blanked on the power play.
“[Assistant coach] Jeff Keiver has a great pow-er-play set up. We prac-tice it quite a bit,” Richter said. “I guess a lot of our power-play guys have a lot of confidence out there. Pucks go our way, bounces go our way on the power play and luck-ily we score.”
Game 5 went almost the same as each of the four games previous to it.
A scoreless first peri-od with combined scor-ing chances countable on one hand led to a second period in which one team cashed in on
its few opportunities.Thursday night, it
was the Dynamiters special teams doing the damage once again as Keenan Haase scored an unassisted pow-er-play goal to open the festivities before Jesse Wallace followed up 48 seconds later with a short-handed tally.
The quick strikes gave the Dynamiters a 2-0 lead through 40 minutes.
Thunder Cats for-
ward Nicholas Kovacik cut the advantage in half 5:10 into the third peri-od. Despite immense pressure with Martell on the bench for the extra attacker in the final two minutes of regulation, the Thunder Cats were unable to convert.
“It was the longest minute of my life, prob-ably,” Brouwer said. “Just keep it out of the net. I didn’t want any negative thoughts in my head of what might hap-pen. I don’t think any-body on the team did either and that’s why we were so successful.”
Brouwer finished the night with 26 saves to his name and wrapped the series with an as-tounding 0.78 goals-against average and 0.966 save percentage, having steered aside 113 of the 117 shots sent his way in five games.
With the series tri-umph, the focus turns to the Fernie Ghostriders, who dispatched the Golden Rockets in Game 5 of their division semifi-nal Wednesday night.
There isn’t much left to be said for one of the KIJHL’s deepest and most heated rivalries outside of the fact a best-of-seven series sets up to be electric.
“Blood runs deep,” Brouwer said. “It’s going to be another war out there. I know we’ll be ready for them.”
The schedule for the Eddie Mountain Divi-sion final between the
Fernie Ghostriders and Kimberley Dynamiters is still to be determined.
“They’ve got a lot of older players. Their lead-ing scorers are all fairly mature and older guys. You can’t give them chances,” Bancks said. “That was a disciplined effort by [the Thunder Cats]. They played their systems. I’m thinking it might be a little bit more wide open [against Fern-ie], but not on our part.”
Though most of the celebrating was saved for after the final buzzer and the traditional hand-shake, there were a few moments of recognition and jubilation prior to puck drop Thursday as KIJHL Eddie Mountain Division vice-president Phil Iddon was on hand to present a handful of league and divisional awards.
Richter was hon-oured as KIJHL Top Scorer, Eddie Mountain Division Top Scorer and MVP. Jordan Busch was recognized as the Eddie Mountain Division’s Top Defenceman, while Coy Prevost was presented with the Eddie Mountain Division Rookie of the Year.
“He’s so smart and he just settles things down so well,” Bancks said of Busch.
“He’s not afraid to try anything,” Bancks said of Prevost. “But he’s worked extremely hard and he’s had a great year, right from the start to the finish.”

The Kootenay Ice continue a four-game eastern road swing with a pair of weekend tilts against the Brandon Wheat Kings Friday and Saturday.
“They’re a good team. They move the puck ex-ceptionally well,” said Kootenay Ice head coach Ryan McGill. “Their transition game to move the puck up the ice is probably best in the league and their goalten-ding is excellent.
“If [Jordan Papirny] can see the puck, he’s going to be real good. They’re a good team and they’re in first place for a reason.”
The Ice have mus-tered three of a possible four points through two games on this eastern
swing, following a 7-6 shootout loss to Swift Current (Tuesday) and 5-4 shootout win over Regina (Wednesday).
“We need to be fo-cused and determined for 60 minutes,” McGill said. “That’s the bottom
line. That’s something that’s very hard for our group.”
Following the week-end in Brandon, the Ice return home to host the Red Deer Rebels March 6 at Western Financial Place.

Dear Annie: I’ve been married to “Lily” for 15 years, and we have two teenagers. We’ve built a good life. But Lily is an unhappy per-son. And while I’ve not been an angel, she never acknowledges that her unhappiness contributes to our problems. She walks around with a chip on her shoulder. Lily is a stay-at-home mom, but she does no cooking and the house is a mess. She’s made it clear that when I want to speak to her, I need to do it when she’s not reading, surfing the Internet or watching TV. Even though I have to get up at 4 a.m., she insists on doing puzzles in bed with the light on. When I return home, she never greets me. I have to go over to the sofa where she is sit-ting in order to give her a kiss hello, which annoys her because I’m disturbing her TV watching. When Lily is immersed in a project (family genealogy, high school reunion, whatever), she neglects the entire family and sees noth-ing wrong with it. While she does not want me associating with any friends I had prior to our marriage, she regularly entertains her ex-husband (when I’m out of town), dresses up for him and cooks dinner for him. Yet she is outrageously jealous of any female I asso-ciate with, even a colleague. I could barely tolerate this when Lily was on antidepressants, but she stopped a year ago, and things got worse. She’d scream at me and our youngest daughter for no rea-son. She became paranoid that I was having an affair and, with no evidence, declared herself a victim of infidelity and asked for a divorce. So I met with a divorce lawyer and was surprised to hear from a large number of friends and family who were past targets of Lily’s screaming fits and were willing to say so in court. I’ve asked Lily to go for counsel-ing, but she refuses. She stopped seeing the last counselor when he said she needed to work on herself. Things have settled down because she’s on another project and ignor-ing us. But I worry about what she’s doing to our youngest daughter. Would it be wrong to research how to have her committed? -- Frightened for My Girls Dear Frightened: That seems extreme. Lily sounds severely depressed and possibly bipolar. The right medication and therapy could do wonders for her, but she has to be willing. Your girls are nearly adults. A better option for you might be divorce and custo-dy. A judge could mandate therapy for Lily as a condition of seeing her children. Mean-while, please contact the National Alliance on Mental Illness (nami.org) for informa-tion and referrals. Dear Annie: I am friends with an out-of-state couple who visit me briefly twice a year. I’ve known them for decades, and we share many good memories. Since my husband’s death, they feel the need to instruct me on how to handle ev-erything in my life, including home main-tenance, personal relationships and the brand of computer I use. When they leave, I am exhausted. They mean well, but I am ca-pable and independent. How do I tactfully tell them to butt out? -- Baffled in Boston Dear Baffled: If you cannot tolerate their intrusive bossiness twice a year, it’s time to say, “I appreciate your concerns, but I’m managing very well, thanks.” Repeat as needed, and ignore the rest. Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Tired and Disgusted Other Half.” I, too, was the other half. My ex-husband was always right about everything. I was put down in front of family and friends and made the butt of his jokes. He controlled every aspect of our lives. I thought we were partners, but he made all the decisions. I stayed because I didn’t think I could make it on my own. After 35 years, I finally left and couldn’t be happier. Within a short time The Cranbrook Herald stated “there are so many Chinese laundry buildings in the vicinity that it is considering adding some Chinese type font and publishing a celestial edition.” In truth, though the Herald was a decidedly an-ti-Chinese publication, if it could have made money printing in Chi-nese it most likely would have.
Needless to say the supposed glut of Chi-nese laundries came from the simple fact that the folks of Cranbrook needed someone to clean their clothes and it appeared they were not about to do it for them-
selves. The Chinese gradu-
ally made deeper in-roads into the commu-nity. By 1900 there were a few Chinese Chris-tians who might be found at church; the Methodist Church to be precise, built in Decem-ber, 1899, just a stone’s throw from Chinatown. The location was quite possibly chosen for that very reason, as the Methodist guidelines called for a certain amount of missionary work and who better than the folks next door. For that matter, it was only a hop, skip and jump to the red-light district on 6th Avenue.
“There is a serious
Chinese problem in Cranbrook,” comment-ed The Herald in June, 1900. “There are, at the present time a number of Chinese stores, a restaurant, a jeweler and innumerable laun-dries patronized by all out of sheer necessity as there are no white laun-dries in town.”
And so it was that that for those wanting clean, well-fitted clothes, shoes repaired, fresh vegetables, do-mestic help and exotic ornaments and cuisine, among other things, the Chinese were not only there but were becom-ing more and more in-dispensible, much to the chagrin of many. Kimberley, in fact, cam-
paigned for the removal of the few Chinese set-tled in their community. The Herald reported in August, 1900, “Kimber-ley will remove the Chi-nese colony next Satur-day night. As is the case of other adjoining towns, Kimberley’s loss will be Cranbrook’s gain.” The town of Moyie was threatening similar action while Nelson had done much the same two years earlier. Decid-edly unwelcome in many local communi-ties, the Chinese, for better or for worse, could at least make a home in Cranbrook.

sion by the Supreme Court of Canada not to hear an appeal in a case means the oath of alle-giance to the Queen will stay as a requirement in order to obtain Canadi-an citizenship.
The court refused today to hear the appeal of three permanent resi-dents who had mounted
a charter challenge to the oath requirement.
Michael McAteer, Simone Topey and Dror Bar-Natan are all per-manent residents of Canada who wanted to obtain citizenship, but for different reasons, did not want to pledge alle-giance to the monarchy.
Topey, a Jamaican, is a Rastafarian and main-tains her religion forbids
taking an oath to the Queen.
Bar-Natan, an Israeli, argued that the oath represents entrenched privilege he opposes.
McAteer, from Ire-land, argued the oath is unnecessary and would violate his conscience.
In September 2013, a lower court judge ruled that any charter viola-tion the oath require-
ment causes can be jus-tified in a democratic society.
The Ontario Court of Appeal confirmed that decision last year, prompting the trio to seek leave to appeal be-fore the Supreme Court.
As is customary with the Supreme Court, it gave no reasons for re-fusing to hear the ap-peal.
