CEO’s Message Be a Hero…Help a Club Kid!Dear Friends,

Heroes are more than just people who save the day; they pick us up when we are down and believe in us when we do not have the courage to believe in ourselves. All of us have the power to make a difference, especially in the life of a child. Your support expresses your belief in our mission and helps us strengthen programs to better serve our kids. It’s been a busy year! Our capital campaign, More Kids, Brighter Futures, continues to gain momentum and we’re close to achieving our goals to serve more kids. Thanks to countless campaign heroes, excitement was in the air when more than 400 kids and staff celebrated the unveiling of the “new and improved” Camp Foster on July 8, 2019.

As one of the largest youth development organizations in Manchester, it is our job to continue to grow, broadening the effect of our programs while increasing the impact on our members who rely on us day after day. For more than 112 years, the Boys & Girls Club of Manchester has impacted thousands of young people. We are excited to implement our strategic plan Impact 2025, never losing focus on our comprehensive approach to youth development which will continue to provide unique and valuable assets to the community. We are committed to bridging the gap between school and home, renewing our commitment to the whole child, by working beyond the traditional model to help young people learn and grow.

Impact 2025 was borne from innovative thinking and data as a collaborative effort amongst our staff, board, stakeholders, partners, and kids, designed to lift our members and our community. We are ready to rise above the challenges in our path – both known and unknown. Our kids belong to all of us and, because of that, there’s an opportunity for everyone to make an impact. Join us on this journey so, together, we continue our mission and achieve our goal to empower Club members through safe and impactful experiences, to graduate from high school with a plan for college or career, contribute to their community, and live healthy lives. Thank you for being a hero to all of us at the Boys & Girls Club!

Have you visited Camp Foster lately? Camp Foster is located in Bedford, NH and is where the Boys & Girls Club of Manchester serves more than 400 Club kids in the summer providing a safe, outdoor outlet for many of our members who live in the central part of Manchester and the surrounding area. Due to the generosity and investment of so many business partners, benefactors, volunteers, board members, staff, and friends of the Club, we were able to completely renovate the decaying grounds and buildings at camp and complete the first phase of our More Kids, Brighter Futures capital campaign. Over the winter an updated, open air series of buildings and resources that are fully deserving of the use of our kids was completed. This renovation will enable our Club to expand summer capacity by thirteen percent.

The commitment of our Staff, led by an unparalleled senior team, continued to run all our incredible programs, fed more than 144,000 breakfasts, snacks, and dinners to our members and their families, and adapted as needs changed to perpetually provide the highest in safety standards and ensure outstanding developmental experiences for our kids.

What’s next? The expansion of our Union Street Clubhouse will increase program capacity for members served by thirty-three percent. Today, we have 150 of our youngest members on a wait list hoping to be a part of our safe environment and thrive within our after school programs. As of the writing of this annual report, we are close to achieving our overall campaign goal of $5.8M+ and we are moving forward with the permits to build 4,700 additional square feet. We are eternally grateful for the continued support of our community as we embark upon this next phase.

Our Club members are our future workforce in New Hampshire. Their future goals and aspirations are not only cultivated by the staff at our organization, but they are shown direct paths to enable these outcomes. The expansion and renovations of our facilities was a bold undertaking; the futures of our Club kids, our community, and our economy depends upon our joint success. Thank you to all who have invested in the vision for our future.

Foundation of Friends

This report acknowledges, with gratitude, those who have invested in the lives of the young people of the Boys & Girls Club of Manchester through their financial and in-kind support from July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019.

Donor listings appear throughout these pages, among the highlights of the past year, because without your generous support, we would not be able to provide such amazing opportunities to the young people we serve.

We apologize for any omissions or errors in listing or spelling. Please call Natalie Jutras, (603) 625-5031, ext. 246, with any corrections.

Thank You!

The Foundation of Friends Annual Campaign raises unrestricted operating dollars to support the programs and services we provide to the children of greater Manchester. As part of this campaign, the Champions for Kids Society gives donors the opportunity to make a five-year pledge to the Club at the $1,000 to $10,000 level annually. Donors are also encouraged to support the Club at a level of their own choosing for a period of time that best suits their philanthropic wishes. As you can see, our friends continue to respond in a remarkable way...Thank you!

The first days of school…2:45 pm and the Club is about to fill with over 500 members. I already have two 6th graders settle into my office to draw, and I’m getting ready for the elementary school rush. At 3:15 they start walking the halls and two kids quickly turn into eight. A few members I haven’t met before notice kids in my office, so they come right in. I love these moments, my hand held out as I introduce myself and wait for it…that inevitable question I get from a curious kid…“what do you do?”

While I prefer “are you the Principal?” or “do you own this place?”, the question “what do you do?” presents an opportunity to discuss the idea of gratitude and what that means for us at the Boys & Girls Club of Manchester.

The best part of my job is being able to express our gratitude for your investment in our members and their Club…the kids that hang out in my office know it. I share stories of your generosity and remind them that they are lucky to have so many friends, donors, society club members, board members, table captains, volunteers, corporations, organizations, and alumni supporting them. My feelings of appreciation are not just my own, all the staff possess that feeling and it starts to imbed in our kids as well. This culture of gratitude extends through our members, and below are a few “just because” notes I’ve received from some very special kids.

While I know I’m far from “the best staff,” and really hope I don’t resemble my portrait, watching our members express their gratefulness, and being a recipient of it, is powerful. You are helping us teach the art of thank you…a trait that will positively impact the lives of our kids forever.

With gratitude,Natalie

Donor SpotlightChristy Houpis and Dawn McGuire What were your expectations the first year as Youth of The Year Judges? The first year we served as Judges for the Youth of the Year, we candidly had very low expectations. If someone had asked us what the judging was about, the answer would be that we thought it was akin to a talent show or play audition. Nothing could have been further from the truth or more opposite of the process and experience we had.

How did your expectations change once you met the candidates? Once we met the candidates, we were simply amazed, overwhelmed and impressed beyond description. Each of the individuals was an outstanding person. Each was well-spoken and articulate, mature beyond their years. Each one of the applicants was accomplished in their own right and had overcome significant obstacles in their young lives. Yes, each candidate was incredibly grateful to BGCM for helping them achieve their goals and for what the Club had done to support them in finding a healthy and productive path for their lives. But equally amazing was the positive attitude and optimism each one demonstrated. While the challenges and pain from life’s circumstances may have hurt, they were at ease talking about those difficulties and how they would not let them control their lives. These kids were incredibly open and honest about their feelings, sharing how these challenges impacted their lives and how they were using the growth from these experiences to build a positwive future filled with hope. The foundation for all of this was the Club. It was the Boys & Girls Club that gave them the people, places, programs and the sense of home and belonging that was theirs to do all they had done.

Why was it important for you to support the Youth of the Year with a special fund? Each year we participated in the Youth of the Year, it was a positive and invaluable experience for us meeting these kids and acting as judges. Honestly, it is not an easy role, since each year every single candidate is special, outstanding and deserving of the award. It is nearly impossible to select a “finalist.” It is not overstating when we tell people about our struggle selecting just one person to be Youth of the Year because every candidate is deserving of the distinction. While the honor of

the award and the benefits of their Club experience will be carried with them throughout their lives, we wanted to help in a small, practical way with the next step on their journey. Let us be clear: it was because each of these candidates is so outstanding, because it was so very difficult to decide on just one, because each person is such a positive influence in our community, because they had overcome such significant life challenges and, most importantly, because they will be such a positive role model for BGCM, we wanted to do something beyond the distinction of being selected. We wanted to give them a practical step up and knew this was an investment in our own community because these amazing kids will go on to do incredible things that will come back to help everyone.

What is so special about the Boys & Girls Club of Manchester? For years we heard about the amazing work being done BGCM. For as many years we came to the annual breakfast and watched the special amazing program and kids. All that we had heard and saw was nothing compared to what we witness each and every time we step foot in the Club and see the kids interacting in their environment. Yes, the programs and facilities are first rate. Yes, they have rules and structures that support developing healthy relationships. But the Club is so very much more than these wonderful things. BGCM is a lifeline for many kids. It provides positive, healthy, smart, caring and fun adults that will always be there for the kids; people they know they can always trust. The Club offers, teaches and supports respect, honor, integrity and, yes, love to kids who not only need it but will benefit so greatly by having it. BGCM is a special place because it is a principle-based place in a time when such things are hard to find in our society.

We are the ones honored to be associated with the Boys & Girls Club of Manchester and we are the ones who, truly, benefit by having this organization in our lives and part of our a community.

Youth of the Year Nathalie B. 2019 Young Woman of the Year“I want to show others that with hard work and motivation to not give up, you can accomplish anything you put your mind to.”

Nathalie has been a Club member for twelve years, from first through twelfth grade. As a young girl she was very shy, but with encouragement from the staff and other Club members, she became more engaged in different programs. She says, “I learned that the greatest benefit came when I paid attention and took advantage of all the opportunities the Club had to offer me.” Some of her favorite programs include Smart Girls, Diplomas 2 Degrees, and art programs like African drumming, drama and step team, which guided her in a positive direction and helped her express her creativity.

It was the different leadership programs at the Club that had the greatest impact on her life – Gemstones, Torch Club and Keystone. With others recognizing and encouraging her leadership abilities, she has blossomed into a role model as a Club and staff member. “As president of each of these programs, I learned the importance of teamwork and that it is necessary to accomplish any goal. Once I recognized my leadership abilities, I had this new-found confidence.” She is described as caring, kind-hearted, helpful and honest, which will serve her well as she pursues a degree in health science at Manchester Community College and ultimately enters a career in the nursing field. “I have grown to be a hard-working leader who never gives up, a caring individual who respects others, and a strong, confident young woman who has learned to embrace my uniqueness. I believe I am the definition of a Club kid, and I always will be.”

“I want to lead by example and show others how a kid from the little town of Cataño, Puerto Rico can become someone great.”

Joseph has been a Club member since 2014 when he moved to the U.S. mainland from Puerto Rico. He was a shy young boy who did not know any English. He had no interest in meeting people outside of his family and immediate circle. He feared being made fun of because of his accent. He admits to acting out and disrespecting his parents because he emulated what he saw from others growing up. Joseph says, “when I thought of my future before I came to the United States, and before I came to the Club, I saw a life of fast money, selling drugs and having power.”

Lucky for us, he found the Club thanks to a friend and he fit right in. He immediately began to develop stronger relationships with the staff and Club members who encouraged him to become involved in activities that helped change his attitude and shaped his future. He and others describe him as goofy, hardworking, compassionate and confident. Through his involvement with the Keystone leadership program, Diplomas2Degrees, basketball, and working in the gym, he has emerged as a leader and role model for other members. Thanks to his involvement at the Club, he says, “I have a new vision for my future. I want to graduate high school, go to college, and pursue a degree in Business Communications. I am now motivated to succeed for myself, my family and my Club family. I am no longer confused, unsure or lost. Thanks to the Club, I know exactly who I want to be.”

Program ImpactA Message from Ken Neil, Chief Operating Officer

Staff Heroes….This past year the Boys & Girls Club of Manchester was selected to become a Granite United Way funded hub agency as part of their three-year Youth Enrichment Strategy. This initiative brought many of Manchester’s youth serving agencies together to focus on providing services to Manchester’s middle school students in the after-school setting. The Club, along with other facility-based agencies, was identified as a Hub, a place where middle school youth spent time each day after school. Other agencies were identified as Spoke agencies, agencies who had services to provide middle school youth, but had limited access to these youth. The goal of the initiative was to promote collaborative efforts to get the Spoke agencies into the Hubs and to have a greater impact on middle school youth.

As a Hub, this initiative was a tremendous success for our Club as our middle school membership exploded with several Spoke agencies providing services at the Club in areas ranging from mental health to media literacy. Program Heroes such as Antonio Feliciano, Club Unit Director; Gilbert Abel, Tween Director; Kyle Winston, Tween/Teen Individual Services Director and David Arce, Tween/Teen Athletic Director led the way with this initiative. They were the difference makers. We served over 600 Manchester middle school members with an average daily attendance of over 140 grade 6-8 members. This is just one example of the many high impact Club programs that our Staff Heroes make happen every day.

This institution in an equal opportunity provider.

Treasurer’s Report By Jeff WheelerFor the fiscal year ending June 30, 2019, total unrestricted revenues, gains and other support totaled $4,045,000 which includes $274,000 of investment returns. Expenses for the same period were $3,450,000, resulting in an increase in unrestricted net assets of $595,000. The Club obtained diversified sources of public support to ensure our programs and services will be available to our kids. Most notable is the continued generous support the Club receives from the Foundation of Friends annual campaign, our most significant fundraising activity. Of our total expenses of $3,450,000, $2,678,000 (or 78% of the total) was spent directly on programs benefiting our kids. The remaining $772,000 provided support services to sustain and fund our quality programs and the maintenance and safety of the facility.

The Club remains financially secure. Our endowment fund decreased by $167,000 for the year ended June 30, 2019 and totaled $6,783,000 as of June 30, 2019. In our fiscal year ended June 30, 2019, after careful consideration, our Board of Directors voted to invest $1,000,000 of unrestricted endowment into our More Kids, Brighter Futures capital campaign to renovate Camp Foster and to expand the Union Street Clubhouse. Our Board of Directors prudently designates all bequests, whether or not donor restricted, as an addition to the Club’s endowment to sustain our future. In 2019, we received notice of an estimated $450,000 unrestricted bequest which will be added to the endowment as received in fiscal year 2020. Total outstanding debt was $585,000 at June 30, 2019. Our net assets totaled $16,211,000.

The Club’s management and staff continue to be great stewards of your financial investment in the Club and your community. We appreciate the generosity of our community in support of the young people who need us most. The return on your investment is seen in the more than 500 smiling faces served each day at our three locations during the school year and at Camp Foster and the Union Street Clubhouse during the summer months.
