    SAFETY TIP OF THE WEEK

An Increase in Thefts from Vehicles Yields this Safety Tip

How can you help fight crime and get your property back?

Record the make, model and serial number of all your electronics, now! IF

your items get stolen, give this information to deputies immediately! Thiswill help in tracking the stolen items, arresting the criminal, and returning

    your property to you.

How are they breaking into vehicles?

    Breaking Windows

    Entering through unlocked doors

    Bypassing locking systems

How do you protect your valuables?

TAKE THEM OUT OF YOUR VEHICLE OR KEEP THEM OUT OF SIGHT!

The reason people steal personal belongings from your car is because they

see something they want. Remember, what is not valuable to you may be

    the object of their desire.

PLEASE take the extra time to physically remove your CD player, blue tooth, laptop, GPS, CDs, purse, radio, etc. from your vehicle. Remove any empty

bags or briefcases to remove the criminals curiosities. Clean the GPS

suction cup circle off of your windshield.

    Variations on a Scheme

Weve heard reports that a variation on an old scam is making the rounds.

    It sounds like this:

Unsuspecting person who answers the phone: Hello?

Scammer who is calling: Maam, Im calling from the government. Were

about to send out national medical cards for the new Affordable Care

Act. Youre one of the lucky people to get yours first, so I just need to

confirm your name, address and phone number. Oh, and your bank account

    number, too

This kind of scam pops up anytime theres a big change in a government

policy, or when a topic is in the news. Scammers use peoples uncertainty

to try to get them to reveal personal information. From there, its not much

of a leap to identity theft, with scammers racking up bogus charges on your

credit cards, opening new credit cards in your name, even taking out loans

    in your name.

You can protect yourself. If you get a call asking for your information, hang

up. Its a scam. Government organizations and the legitimate groups you do

business with have the information they need. Theyll never call to ask you

    for it.

But do me a favor: If you get a call like this, report it to the FTC. The phone

number on your caller IDif there is oneor the name or location of the

calleris helpful information to investigators and professional fraud

fighters. You can report itonlineor on the phone, toll-free, at 1-877-FTC-

HELP. Your report might help stop the scammers, and it could help keep

    others from being scammed.
