Let me share the purpose of the PTA with you as written in these by-laws. “The purposes of the Cave Spring Elementary School PTA are: To promote the welfare of children and youth in home, school, community, and place of worship. To raise the standards of home life. To secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth. To bring into closer relation the home and the school, that parents and teachers may cooperate intelligently in the education of children and youth. To develop between educators and the general public such united efforts as will secure for all children and youth the highest advantages in physical, mental, social, and spiritual education.” Well, that’s a tall order to fill!! The 2016-2017 PTA Board set out to achieve these purposes by focusing on events that would: involve the whole family (Family Game Night), bring our community together for fun and exercise (Fall Fun Run), challenge our students’ minds (Read-A-Thon), provide environmental awareness (CSES Fall Waterways Clean Up), promote the overall health of our children (Red Ribbon Week), educate parents (Social Media presentation), provide social time among our community (Bingo Night), provide a cultural inclusive learning opportunity (Multi-cultural night), and much, much more. Summer offers a great opportunity to reflect on this school year and focus on moving ahead. Here are some tips for how you can continue to have a huge impact on your child’s learning: -> Get involved with your child’s learning. -> Talk to your child about the value of education. ->Encourage your child to read. READ, READ, READ!!! Let your child see YOU reading – the newspaper, magazines, books. Read together – listening to your child read will tell you TONS about his/her progress. ->Spend quality time with your child(ren). Summer is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of time together. Mrs. Schaefer will send home information later in May about a summer reading program for CSES students. Look for information to come home soon about this and please encourage your child to join in the fun! BIG congratulations to very special staff members on their retirement from CSES at the end of this school year – Angie Coffman, Bonnie Johnson, Becky Mason, and Marsha Wray! These ladies truly love children, especially the kiddos at CSES! They each leave their mark here at CSES as they venture into the next chapter – RETIREMENT! I know you join me in thanking each extraordinary educator for her service. Whitney Barry and Jackie King, sadly for us, will leave CSES at the end of this year. Mrs. Barry is looking forward to spending time at home with her family, and plans to substitute next school year. At least we will still get to see her here in the halls at CSES! Mrs. King is moving to Northern Virginia, where her husband has accepted a job transfer. She will truly be missed, and we wish the King family safe travels and an exciting new beginning. Thank you both for your dedication to the students at CSES, you will be missed! We are definitely in the “home stretch” of this school year – things will get hectic with the SOL tests, year-end activities, spring sports, etc. Encourage your child to hang in there and not “check out” just yet, there is still plenty of learning to take place. Don’t forget to enjoy EACH day and moment, but don’t forget that they are not just moments – they are memories! Just a reminder that the office will be open Monday- Thursday this summer. We will resume normal weeks beginning August 7. Please don’t hesitate to call or email me with questions or concerns – [email protected] or 772-7558. Thank you, parents, for all you do as partners with CSES! Jodi Poff, Principal

President’s Message

Have you read our PTA By-laws? Yep, I hadn’t either until

served one year on the nominating committee. The By-laws

are a basic how-to and what-to guide for our PTA. (They are

on the CSES PTA website should you get the sudden urge to

read them!)

Let me share the purpose of the PTA with you as written

in these by-laws.

“The purposes of the Cave Spring Elementary School PTA are: To promote the welfare of children and youth in home,

school, community, and place of worship. To raise the standards of home life. To secure adequate laws for the care and protection of

children and youth. To bring into closer relation the home and the school,

that parents and teachers may cooperate intelligently in the education of children and youth.

To develop between educators and the general public such united efforts as will secure for all children and youth the highest advantages in physical, mental, social, and spiritual education.”

Well, that’s a tall order to fill!!

The 2016-2017 PTA Board set out to achieve these

purposes by focusing on events that would: involve the whole

family (Family Game Night), bring our community together

for fun and exercise (Fall Fun Run), challenge our students’

minds (Read-A-Thon), provide environmental awareness

(CSES Fall Waterways Clean Up), promote the overall health

of our children (Red Ribbon Week), educate parents (Social

Media presentation), provide social time among our

community (Bingo Night), provide a cultural inclusive

learning opportunity (Multi-cultural night), and much, much

more. We also chose to raise money for these programs by

running laps, reading books and playing bingo instead of

selling wrapping paper or cookie dough.

As I look back, the year could not have happened without

TEAMWORK! Because of the efforts of many (PTA Board,

administrators, teachers, staff, volunteers, parents,

community members), this year has been a successful and

rewarding one. I hope you feel the same!

for next year! Together We can Achieve More! Happy Sum-

mer!

Who doesn’t love earning our school money while we do our shopping, feed our families, or enjoy some activities? It

doesn’t get much easier than that! Help us finish the year strong! We are on for fun at Buffalo Wild Wings Wednesday, May 17th from 5pm-9pm, preferably to dine in. Let’s make this a fun night to eat with friends and family! They will be donating 15% of all CSES sales to our PTA!

Thank you to those families who came out to support our April incentive rewards! We earned $137.00 from Burger in the Square who generously matched our earnings!! We additionally earned $100.00 from Polished by CV. We hope you enjoyed some well deserved relaxation! Thank you also to those households that have signed up your Kroger card to donate to CSES every time you shop at

Kroger! We increased our households from 65 to 97! If you haven’t yet done this, please consider this easy way to donate to our school. Let’s try to make it to 100! We are almost there!! Please keep sending in your Box Tops. You can just send them in a baggie or attach them to a collection sheet.

Collection sheets are available to print from our PTA website and also available in the front office. Please remember to check the label’s tiny print for the expiration date. Each label is worth 10 cents to our school! We will be collecting Campbell’s Soup Labels for Education through the end of the school year. Thank you for

supporting this final run of this longstanding program that has generously supported education for many years. A final thank you for supporting the school by doing little things that add up big!! As always if you have suggestions

for incentive rewards, contact Rebecca Wiegard at [email protected].

SPECIAL EDUCATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Parents, please plan to join RCPS and parents in next years SEAC quarterly meetings. RCPS maintains a local Special Edu-cation Advisory Committee (SEAC) to advise the school division of issues impacting the education of students with disabilities and in formulating plans for improving the performance of children with disabilities in the division’s schools and the community. All meetings are open to the public; SEAC welcomes anyone interested in special education. There is designated time for public comment during the meeting. This is an opportunity to share successful educational experiences and express general concerns regarding educational issues for students with disabilities. We look forward to more parent participation in 2017-2018.

Multicultural Night was a wonderful evening of CSES families sharing their culture with other CSES families! Every family had yummy foods to try from their country, art, language, musical instruments, jewelry and much more that they displayed and happily shared. The students had passports that were stamped when they visited each country

by the geography club fourth and fifth graders who were ambassadors for the evening.

An appreciative thank you to the families who shared their countries and culture with us!

Thank you to all of the families who participated in the library birthday book club! The library now has 130 new

books! The students had a fun birthday celebration with cupcakes and ice cream, and their new books with a dedication sticker inside. Their names will be in the library long after they graduate. Thank you to the library volunteers who brought in

cupcakes for this fun event: Badria Bilgrami, Amanda Poff, Marcie Lovell, Sherry Wang, Beth Ann Freisleben, Susan Collins, Beth Smith, Chris Brown, Aimee Beale, Vicki Schemm and Mrs. Hatcher.

Thank you to the volunteers that helped to make sure the parties ran smoothly: Sherry Wang, Chris Brown, Susan

Collins and Alyson Herold.

This year we have been so grateful to our volunteers in the library! They come in

every week with a smile ready to check out books, help students find books and help

out with events like the birthday book club and book fairs. If a volunteer is not able

to make it to their shift because of a sick child or a last minute appointment, another

volunteer is always there to fill in. Without these dedicated volunteers the students

wouldn’t be able to check out books! A GIANT thank you to: Michelle Musser, Yukino

it’s with everyone’s help that we were able to show

the staff & CSES family how important their hard
