Verifying Subject Matter CompetencySecondary teachers must be competent and knowledgeable in the subject(s)
they teach. This competency is verified by completion of a SMPP or CSET
• Candidates may successfully complete a series of coursework, also referred to as a Subject Matter Preparation Program, that has been recommended by an academic department and approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
• Undergraduates should align SMPP requirements with degree requirements – see advisor.
• The SMPP must be complete prior to the start of the credential program.
Subject Matter Preparation
Program (SMPP)
• Candidates may take the CSET instead of completing a SMPP.
• Some subject areas do not have a SMPP available (science, FLM, art and some world languages), therefore the CSET is the only way to verify subject matter competency.
• All subtests of the CSET must be passed prior to the start of the credential program.
• To register for the CSET go to www.cset.nesinc.com
