Cumberland High School Newsletter Issue 4 – 17 May 2019

Last Friday, 17th May, I was invited to the Secretary of the Department of Education, Mark Scott’s Principal Road Show. Together with two other Principals, I was given the opportunity to share the extraordinary school culture and community that has enabled Cumberland High School to thrive. It was fabulous to be able to share with so many Principal colleagues across the State, the exceptional opportunities being both offered and embraced here at Cumberland High School.

Recently, our students, Charlotte Ballard, Rachael Edmonds, Dev Chopra and Adwithiya Puri participated in the United Nations Evatt diplomacy competitions. The students were required to work effectively together in achieving their countries’ diplomatic objectives, mimicking the United Nations meetings held in New York. The boys participated at James Ruse Agricultural High School and represented Kuwait. They were required to sign many things such as amendments and also negotiate with other member states. The girls atteneded UTS and represented Indonesia. It was an enlightening opportunity for everyone.

The Mock Trial Team is making outstanding progress after having won three from three trials. What a wonderful result for our highly committed coach, Mr Thomas and Mock Trial Team!

We have also had our keen scientists participating in the Big Science Competition and our fabulous leaders Gabriella Forlani, Husain Alhashemi and Rachael Edmonds with Ms Alexander participating in a Student Voice Panel for the Department of Education on Monday 20 May.

Our Year 7 leaders Siya Dhawan, Arnav Kale, Emma Kunjasich and Daniel Zolmajdi together with Mr Pillay participated in our Community of Schools Leadership program at Rydalmere Primary School this week too.

So many exciting initiatives! Mrs M. Pikoulas Principal

Mock Trial team victorious over Riverside Girls and Kings!!

After defeating Northmead CAPA to the tune of 70 points in the practice round, the Cumberland Mock trial team were able to defeat a tough opponent in Riverside Girls by 16 points in a criminal trial in April. This was followed up by a close one against Kings this week, where Cumberland prevailed by 179 to 176 points!

Both victories were very sweet after Cumberland spent several hours in the holidays, on weekend and after school holidays preparing for success.

Victory over Riverside Girls

Our barristers, Adwithya Puri and Rachel Harkin received special mention from the presiding magistrate in the case! Lauren Barrientos was a stonewalling witness and Dev Chopra, whilst entertaining, did walk a very fine line with the magistrate. Harry Choi impressed as Court Officer whilst Vedant Trivedi was solid in his first solicitor’s role in mock trial.

A massive thanks is extended to Ms Jenkins, Mr Rigg and Mrs Rigg for their assistance with transport and moral support.

Victory over The Kings School

Harry Choi prepared some impressive solicitor’s notes in his

first trial as a solicitor and Ilham Saeedi (Magistrate’s Clerk) was most impressive in his first ever trial. It was amazing watching the magistrate sit back and enjoy the cross examination delivered by our Rachel Harkin and Adwithya Puri. Special mention was made of Taylor Barrientos in her role as a witness. Dev Chopra was again entertaining as a witness and Vedant Trivedi was a great support through our preparation and the actual trial. The Cumberland team not only won the civil matter but more importantly won the mock trial.

A massive thanks is extended to Ms Pikoulas, Mohammad Piri and Negar Sanati for their home ground support. Ms Pikoulas was very impressed with the social skills of our students.

Mr Thomas, Mock Trial coach

Year 12 Legal Studies Law Day Out 2019

The Year 12 Legal Studies class went on a tour of the Supreme Court and the Downing Centre courts on May 15th this year. Christine from the Rule of Law Institute was our guide. We were lucky to have an audience with The Honourable Justice Emmett in his chambers high up in the Supreme Court building overlooking the harbour. Some of the matters that we heard included an appeal against a 17 year sentence for importing guns, an accused representing himself against a charge of running a red light and some apprehended domestic violence order breach hearings. The students enjoyed their day in the courts and look forward to a visit to Parramatta Courts in the near future!

Why study Economics in the senior years?

In the next few months, Year 10 students will think about which four subjects to elect, other than English and Maths, to study for the next two years. I have done some research and included some reasons why to think about making Economics one of those 4 picks!

Economics relates to everything

You do not necessarily have to choose economics just because you want to do it at university (in fact, it is often the other way around). Economics is still a useful subject to do even if you end up choosing Politics, Philosophy, Sociology, Law or History. As Vladimir Lenin (yes, the communist from USSR) once said: “Politics is just a high concentration of Economics.” One will have to agree with this statement as most government policies will have some economic basis in them. Thus, knowing some basic economics will really help you understand politics. Similarly, the foundation of economics relates to many philosophical principles (one just needs to point out utilitarianism) and many historical events can be better analysed if put in the right economic context. Thus, Economics is definitely the perfect subject to do at school. It will prepare you very well for the

academic challenges you will encounter at university.

Why do we Study Economics In School?

1. Understand what is happening.

The current crisis has shown that it is hard to separate our daily lives from Economics. Many people get confused over interest rates, inflation and government borrowing. But, these are issues which affect our daily lives and own financial well-being. Understanding economics helps comprehend what is happening and why we have lost our job.

2. Understand two sides of the argument.

We live in a sound bite society, where the mass media often try to portray issues in black and white. – Medicare good / Medicare bad. In Economics, you hopefully learn to appreciate there is more than one side of the argument and see issues from different perspectives. This gives a more balanced view of economic/social issues. A key element in economics is evaluation – understanding that the impact of higher interest rates depends on the economic circumstances.

Some food for thought as subject selection comes along.

If you have any queries about the study of Economics in the senior years ask myself, Ms Carroll or Ms Abbott.

2019 ANZAC Day Ceremony

On the 3rd of May, Cumberland High School remembered the Australian and New Zealand soldiers who lost their lives during times of war in our ANZAC Day Ceremony. ANZAC Day, traditionally held on the 25th of April, marks the day that Australian and New Zealand troops first fought in Gallipoli in 1915. ANZAC Day is a day of reflection when we remember our soldiers and the courage, initiative, mateship and endurance they showed not just at Gallipoli, but at all other battles they fought.

Members of the year 10 Elective History class participated in our ceremony including Harry Choi and Fay Bekiaris who were our MC’s, Charlotte Ballard who read an extract from the poem “For the Fallen”, Rachael Edmonds and Pat Ryan who laid the wreath and Rachel Harkin who delivered a speech. Rachel’s speech was an important reminder of the hardships faced by Australian and New Zealand troops and their dedication to not just themselves, but their country.

Year 7 Technology Mandatory

Our new year 7’s hit the ground running in Term 1, exploring a range of technology areas from Food and Agriculture, to Digital, Materials and Engineered Systems.

7TM1 began the year with Engineered Systems, examining what an engineer is and does before designing and constructing an electrical circuit for their ‘Wacky Wire’ game. In this unit students also had the opportunity to learn some basic woodworking skills to create their bases.

7TM8 were the first to tackle the new Materials Technology syllabus, learning all about cotton, wool, nylon and polyester fibres before creating a range of woven projects. Students also learnt about how Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples used textiles and drew inspiration from that information.

Year 9 Graphics Technology

This year we reintroduced Graphics Technology as a TAS elective subject to students. In this class they learn about both manual and computer-based forms of technical drawing and editing and develop knowledge of the application of graphics in a variety of contexts. The study of Graphics Technology is particularly relevant in the current age of globalised industry where computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacture (CAM) are widely used.

In Term 1 the focus was on Logos and Pictograms. Students used technical drawing equipment such as drafting boards, sliding rules, eraser shields, mechanical pencils, and set squares to create a range of logos of their own design, before using pencil and markers to render a set of final presentation drawings.

Year 11 Design and Technology

Year 11 D&T students kicked off the year with the Exciting Egg Drop project, in which they were challenged to create professional packaging for a single egg, which also had to protect the egg from a fall of 1.5m. In addition, Miss Nowakowski encouraged students to ‘think outside the box’ and explore a range of alternative and creative shapes. The result was high quality projects across the board. Dylan L won best design for his hexagonal packaging incorporative triangular columns, while Ronald L took out strongest packaging with his innovative combination of triangular shapes.

Amazon Web Services

On Wednesday 2nd of May, a number of Year 10 and Year 11 students had the honour of attending the Amazon Web Services Summit held at ICC Sydney, accompanied by Ms Czislowksi, Ms Nowakowski and Mrs Rigg. The summit, which was in the heart of Sydney CBD, was an enlightening way to spend our Wednesday, with all students and staff learning a lot from industry speakers from companies such as Seek, Canva, Lions, Formula 1 and Electronic Arts (EA). After this, students attended a career panel with 5 of Amazon Web Services’ executive team discussing how they entered the technological

market space; how rapidly the industry can change and how the industry is different now to when they first stared in their respective fields. The group then attended an interactive workshop with Sphero robots, with a Cumberland team winning tins of chocolate for victoriously being awarded 2nd out of 30 teams. We had an amazing time and learnt a lot from leading industry experts and through interacting socially with other schools and Amazon employees. It was a great learning experience, and something all of us would agree to attend again.

Library News New Collaborative Circular Flexible Learning Spaces Students have been enjoying the two new collaborative learning circle lounge areas. They enable large groups of students to work together on various projects while being seated comfortably. Students have often used these lounges and writable whiteboard tables to brainstorm ideas and to engage in critical thinking. The vibrant light green colour has brightened the library aesthetics and the lounges help to distinguish the library as a shared learning environment.

Student Librarian Thankyou Morning Tea Thank you to our 16 amazing Student Librarians who gave up their time to assist other students in the library. They worked together to keep the library looking great as well as loan, return and shelve our library books. On Tuesday Week 2B a morning tea was given to thank these students and to allow these Student Librarians to brainstorm ideas for their role in the library.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Congratulations to the students who have already completed the Premier’s Reading Challenge. A library Award will be given to these students in their Literacy classes. For those students who are still working towards the award the library has a display of suitable books with a folder listing of all Premier’s Reading Challenge books that are part of our Library collection.

How to Pick a Career (That Actually Fits You) – Wait But Why “Society tells us a lot of things about what we should want in a career and what the possibilities are—which is weird because I’m pretty sure society knows very little about any of this. This post isn’t me giving you career advice really—it’s a framework that I think can help you make career decisions that actually reflect who you are, what you want, and what our rapidly changing career landscape looks like today.”
