READINGS FOR NEXT SUNDAY FIRST READING: Isaiah 50:4c-9a (131B) Isaiah prophesied: I gave my back to those who beat me and my face to buffets and spitting. I was not disgraced, for when the Lord is with me, how can I be ashamed? RESPONSORIAL PSALM: 116: 1-6, 8-9 I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living. SECOND READING: James 2:14-18 Faith without good works is dead and worth nothing. A person should not claim to be Christian without living like one. In vain do we profess faith without practice. GOSPEL: Mark 8:27-35 Jesus taught the disciples that the Son of Man must suffer and die. He went on to say that if they wish to follow Him, they, too, must deny themselves and take up the cross. Please remember Kenny Evans, Gary Godlewski, Gage Mason Hoelscher, and the residents of Laclede Groves and Mary, Queen & Mother.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS

“Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that He promised to those who love Him?” JAMES 2:5 What is more important—being rich in faith or rich in posses-sions? Society teaches us that possessions are more impor-tant. God teaches a different lesson. When we are rich in faith we know that material things really do not matter and we are more willing to share what we have.

DYNAMIC CATHOLIC BULLETIN REFLECTIONS

Silence. We live in a world filled with noise: TV, radio, music, email, texts, ads. But silence is essential for your spiritual life. As Matthew Kelly writes: “The more time you spend in silence, the more clearly you will hear the voice of God in your life” (The Four Signs, 51). This week, spend some time in the classroom of silence. Have you ever gone on a silent retreat? The Society of Our Mother of Peace in High Ridge has hermit-ages for those seeking silence for a few days. Archstl.org/dynamic.

FOUR SIGNS at ICD Are you a dynamic Catholic? On Saturday, November 21st, you are invited to The Four Signs Event at Immaculate Con-ception Parish in Dardenne. The presenter for the day will be Dr. Allan Hunt, a convert to Catholicism and author of Confes-sions of a Mega Church Pastor. Discover how to master the Four Signs in order to engage disengaged Catholics and re-energize your community. Tickets are $20, which includes a gift bag on the day of the event. To register, visit tinyurl.com/foursigns.

DAY of PRAYER and REFLECTION A great day of prayer will be offered on Saturday, September 12th, from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at the Cardinal Rigali Center. Fr. Christopher Collins, SJ, will present Three Moments of the Day: Morning Offering, Examen, and Living the Eucharist. The cost is $20 for the day and includes lunch. To register, call 314-792-7250 or email [email protected].

The procession will begin at noon. Following the rosary march, there will be Bene-diction and veneration of the relic of St. Peter Claver, whose feast occurs on September 9th. The rosary march is open to the general public. This is the 30th year for this annual event, sponsored by the World Apostolate of Fatima, a canonically established Public Association of the Faithful with Pontifical Right. Call 314-562-5927 for more information.

FIRST ANNUAL BLUE MASS The first annual Blue Mass for first responders will be held Sun-day, September 13th at 10:00 a.m. at the Cathedral Basilica. The Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Edward Rice. MISSOURI CATHOLIC CONFERENCE Fifty years ago the Second Vatican Council came to a close, ushering in an exciting era in which the Church would boldly engage the modern world on issues of concern to people throughout the globe. Fifty years later, what are the issues that call for the courageous witness of Catholic citizens? The 2015 Annual Assembly of the Missouri Catholic Conference will take up that question when Catholics from all corners of Missouri gather on Saturday, October 3rd in Jefferson City. You are invited to this free event. The Assembly will feature 15 engag-ing workshops covering topics including pro-life, education, Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’, race relations, poverty concern, hospice care, and much more. Please pre-register for the event going to MOCatholic.org or call 800-456-1679.

RETREAT at MERCY CENTER Compassionate Living: Practicing the Presence of God. Each day, we are seeing the result of what happens when one indi-vidual, one group, one community, or one country is at odds with or fighting against another. The world is crying out for compassion—towards ourselves, each other, and all of crea-tion. Compassion is the key to inner peace and freedom—towards ourselves, each other, and all of creation. In this re-treat, participants will discover how to transition form dualistic to non-dualistic ways of thinking; experience the ways in which forgiveness breeds compassion; and come to know that com-passion’s call is not just for non-violence, but interconnected-ness. Non-refundable registration of $25 is due Sept. 23rd. Total cost, including registration if $150/overnight or $90/commuter. Call Bonnie Green at 314-966-4686 or [email protected].
