1 Currents Edison High School Newsletter Fall 2016 Edison’s freshman class and new transfer students were treated to an extra week of school this year. All indications are that it was a worthwhile (and fun!) week. Spear- headed by Carrie Lucas, one of our fantastic counselors, Edison held a week-long orientation class (Au- gust 15 – 19) for all new students. The class, Transition Tools, was developed to teach students with learning differences the specific skills they need to minimize chal- lenges and maximize their success during high school. The class cov- ered a myriad of high school readi- ness topics while incorporating fun getting-to-know-you activities. Half of each day during the week was dedicated to introducing new students to the technology used at Edison. Since we are a 1:1 iPad school, understanding how to use this tool effectively is critical. With the guidance of our Director of Educational Technology, Ally Ren- shaw, new students learned their way around the iPad, including accessibility features that can help with learning differences. Each student logged into email, Google Classroom (and other Google Apps), and learned Edison’s acceptable use policies for technology and the Internet. The orientation week prepared our new students to dive right into course content on day one of the new school year. As you can see in the photos, they had a lot of fun too! Welcome to the 2016-17 School Year!

Edison’s freshman class and new transfer students were treated to an extra week of school this year. All indications are that it was a worthwhile (and fun!) week. Spear-headed by Carrie Lucas, one of our fantastic counselors, Edison held a week-long orientation class (Au-gust 15 – 19) for all new students. The class, Transition Tools, was developed to teach students with learning differences the specific skills they need to minimize chal-lenges and maximize their success during high school. DIRECTORPatrick J. Maguire, M.S.Edison High School

Many years ago while evaluating an existing program I was asked by a staff member “when is good, good enough?” I responded with the word, “Kaizen”. After seeing her puzzled look, I told her it’s a Japanese word meaning “incremental, but relentless improvement.” This has been one of my philoso-phies for Edison for the past 16 years. We don’t want to ever accept “good enough”.

This new school year is no exception. Our new program for all first year students (see front page) allowed us to get iPads into the hands of the students

from day one. In conjunction with Jesuit, we started a new orien-tation program for our “hybrid students” and their parents. These are Edison students who take a class or two at Jesuit and vice versa. As closely as our schools partner, we know there are key differences between our institutions. This orientation helps our shared students begin the school year confident and prepared. We have also changed our daily sched-ule. The benefit of this is twofold: the new schedule makes it easier for our “hybrid students” to move between classes and we can now offer after school help four days a week in-stead of three.

Another exciting new ad-dition is that we now have a counseling office in the Satellite Campus at Valley Plaza. Two of our fabulous counselors, Nick Dexter and

Andreé Cannon-Fleming will be there on a rotating schedule. The new office gives them the ability to work more closely with all students. It’s all about the kids!

We continue to keep our student/teacher ratio low and have hired two new teachers. This was import-ant because I’m proud to say, we have our largest student population ever, 96! Of course, our low ratio is important, but it pales in comparison to my number one priority of hiring and keeping passionate and committed professional teachers. This has been and continues to be the hallmark of our success.

We will continue to eval-uate every existing and new program in order to improve our school which centers on students. Kaizen continues to be our mantra! I wish it was my mantra in my exercise routine!

Meet the Newest Members of the Edison Team

Science teacher Steve Beard and wife Shelly welcomed Silas Jameson Beard on July 9 after a big rain storm. He weighed in at 9 pounds 7 ounces. “We’ve spent much of the summer getting to know one another and taking as many naps as possible. Nathaniel adores his baby brother and is looking for-ward to when they can play more together. Having two kids is exponentially more challenging. It also has many sweet rewards.”

Ms. Fellows Russell and her partner had a glorious and exhausting summer with two kids under two. “Michael Harlan Fellows Russell was born on his due date and therefore did not lose any credit. He is tall for his age, like his dad, and mellow, un-like his mom.” Ms. Fellows Russell will be taking three weeks of maternity leave in hopes of getting more than two hours of sleep in a row She is grateful to her Edison family for all of their support and patience.

Is there a good excuse for starting your summer a day early and miss-ing graduation?

Well, we think Alex LeBlond-Bon-nah ’16 had one, he was on a flight to China. Alex spent two weeks at the Hobie 2016 Sailing World Championships in Dapeng, China. Alex and his sailing partner finished fifth in the Junior World Champion-ship race. They had a fantastic time sailing and meeting fellow sailors from all over the world: 133 teams from 13 countries including the US, Canada, Australia, New Caledonia, Brazil, Denmark, France, and Hong Kong.

Josh Caine-Welch ‘19 spent most of his summer either training for or competing in horse shows. He competed in six shows this sum-mer, which had him, his family, and his horses traveling from Bend, OR to Thunderbird, British Columbia. Josh began riding when he was eight years old and still trains four days a week.

It was a great season for Josh and his horses (Molly and Caylixx), rack-ing up two Champion wins.

Incoming freshman Natalie Rieger spent her last week of summer on the Cascade Pacific Council’s 2016 Westbound Horse Trek.

Natalie and fellow wranglers moved 75 horses from Camp Baldwin to Butte Creek. This nine day, 165 mile ride traveled through the beautiful Mt. Hood Wilderness Area. Her typical day started at 5:30 a.m. and ended around 10:00 p.m. (maybe). At 10:00 p.m. the rotating night watch started. During Natalie’s two hour shift she would check the horses making sure that they had hay and that none of their ropes were tangled.

This was Natalie’s second year riding the range, enjoying chuck-wagon grub and sleeping under the stars.

enhancement, and teacher professional enrichment.

Edison Welcomes Two New TeachersScience teacher, Shanna Lonnquist, is a Portland native and graduated from Oregon State Universi-ty with a BS in General Science. Shanna went on to earn her Masters of Arts in Teaching at Lewis and Clark. She taught middle school science for eight years in the Lake Oswego and Beaverton districts before taking a leave to raise her own two children. Shanna loves kids of all ages and is excited to be back in a science classroom where she can make science meaningful, and estab-lish relationships with students. Outside of school, Shanna enjoys cooking, reading, working out, pilates, travel, and spending time with her family.

Jonah Weaver has returned to Portland after teaching for several years in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is excited to be back and will be teaching both English and History. Jonah earned a B.S. in Secondary Education from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and a M.S. in Secondary Education from Portland State University. He has taught public high school and community college in Portland, as well as diverse groups of learners in Istanbul, Turkey, Bangkok, Thailand and Kitui, Kenya. His concern for global causes has taken him to India to perform rural language assessment for the organization Room to Read, to Sierra Leone with the nonprofit group Compassion First and to South Africa as faculty-in-residence for Teach With Africa. When not teaching, Jonah enjoys running, climbing, reading, losing vast amounts of hypothetical money on Jeopardy, and working on his house.

Alumna Update with Hans Weih Hans Weih, Edison Class of 2012, graduated this past May from Goucher College in Baltimore, MD. Hans said he happily found the right fit in Goucher for his college experi-ence. “I valued the close connections and friendships that I formed with professors and other students while at Goucher. Attending a Liberal Arts College provided me with a unique and well-rounded education which is extremely valuable in today's constantly shifting job market.” He graduated with degrees in both Psychology and Music. He also took full advantage of Goucher’s study-abroad program, living and studying in Prague for a semester. Hans returned to Portland after graduating and began the job search to launch his career. He was re-cently hired by Portland Public School's ACCESS Academy as a Para-Educator in the special educa-tion department. ACCESS is an al-ternative school serving students in grades 1-8 who perform at the 99th

percentile on nationally normed tests for aptitude and/or achieve-ment in any or all of the following areas: reading, math, or general intellect. The program focuses on extremely gifted students who need extra challenges academically, but also assistance in other areas like social interaction.

“The kids I work with remind me of my former Edison classmates: They are extremely bright and intuitive, but have struggled to grow inside of the standardized education system.”

“Schools like ACCESS and Edison provide an essential service to help bright students with learning differ-ences succeed and flourish. Edison helped lay the groundwork for me to successfully navigate college with strong self-advocacy skills and the confidence I needed to succeed.”

“When I first came to Edison, I had almost given up on academics: I now have two degrees and plans to con-tinue my education. That is the power and commitment of the teachers at Edison. I would like to give a huge thank you to the teachers who en-couraged me and helped me become the best student I could be.”

Congratulations Hans! And welcome back to Portland.

Hans took time to see the sights while studying abroad in Prague.
