TEACHING AND RESEARCH STUDENT DEVELOPMENT
Supervision Masters and Doctoral Research Students: During the period 1981 to date I supervised and promoted the study of 31 Masters
students, eleven with distinction (MSc degree based on a two year research
dissertation) and 14 PhD degrees were awarded on the basis of a 3-4 year research thesis, as well as hosting six Post-Doctoral fellows for 2 – 3 year periods.
5
Currently my Platinum Chemistry Research Group consists of 4 PhD and 5 MSc students registered for research degrees, with two Post-Doctoral fellows, (as at
August 2010).
Convener of a new MSc in Analytical Chemistry program by dissertation and
coursework at Stellenbosch University from 2004 to 2008.
I have offered and organised several extra-curricular advanced technical
courses/workshops for continuing education at various times including:
“Nuts and Bolts of Error Theory and Quality Assurance in Chemical Analysis” at
Namakwa Sands Ltd. 1995; Impala Platinum Ltd, 1994; SABS laboratory in Mowbray, Cape Town, 1995.
1St
Inductively-coupled-plasma Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS) Workshop in SA, University of Stellenbosch 3-5 April 2002, in conjunction with Prof Frank Vanhaecke of Gent University, Belgium.
“NMR and the Periodic Table” Advanced course as part of an International Master’s Degree at Leipzig University, Germany (Dec 2006-March 2007). Co-
organised with Prof G Jackson of UCT, “1st
Solid State NMR Workshop”
Stellenbosch University 4-7 Feb 2008, sponsored Royal Society of Chemistry and SA Institute of Chemistry.
Academic teaching and course presented at various levels include
1979-1985 I taught, coordinated and examined a 1st year chemistry course to engineering students (ca 250 students per annum). Over this period some modification to the course content and organisation was initiated in order to streamline the running of the large class and to teach the relevance of basic chemistry more effectively.
Since the inception of the Department of Analytical Science at the University of Cape Town in 1979, under guidance of Professor H M N H Irving, my involvement of establishing a new BSc(Hons) course in Analytical Science has taken the form of a substantial graduate teaching, research projects in this area.
In 1989, I introduced a new 1 semester 3rd year B.Sc. level course on ‘Modern Quantitative Instrumental Analysis’ at UCT. The course was designed to teach BSc students the elements to Quantitative Chemical Analysis with an emphasis on instrumental methods. Lectures include topics on sample preparation, statistical evaluation of accuracy and precision and method validation.
Since joining Stellenbosch University in 2000 establishing the Platinum Metals Chemistry Research Group, I also introduced new undergraduate and BSc(Hons) courses, notably
motivated for the introduction of an BSc(Hons) research project in the 2nd semester of study. In 2004 I was convener of a new MSc degree program in Analytical Chemistry by coursework and dissertation at this University.
In the above context, I have given the following topics advanced graduate and post-graduate courses on at various times in this period.
1. Application of Spectroscopic Methods in Chemistry, including Atomic Spectroscopy. My area of specialisation is Basic and Advanced Multinuclear Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy in Organic and Inorganic Chemistry.
2. The application of chromatographic methods in analytical chemistry. Topics include basic theory of chromatographic separation, applications of Gas Liquid/Solid Chromatography, High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Ion Exchange methods, Gel permeation methods as well as some other related subjects.
3. Error theory, Statistics, and Quality Assurance in the laboratory for Analytical Chemists
6 4. Ligand design and synthesis for coordination of transition metal complexes in the extractive
metallurgy and related areas. 5. The basic chemistry of Extractive Metallurgy. Separation of metal ions by extractive
metallurgy with reference to the Platinum Group Metals. 6. Atomic Absorption and ICP Emission Spectroscopy. Principles and analytical applications. 7. Principles and applications of Flow Injection Analysis. 8. Fundamental Coordination Chemistry of the Platinum Group Metals 9. Advanced NMR and the Periodic Table: BSc(Hons) special topic
In the years 2004-2008 I convened a taught Master’s degree course in advanced analytical science
at Stellenbosch University. This was a successful venture but unfortunately was discontinued in 2008 as a result of the priority to focus on research based Masters Programs, and a lack of
specialist personnel to assist in this course.
MASTERS AND DOCTORAL GRADUATE STUDENT TRAINING BASED ON RESEARCH
Post-Graduate Students: Registered, Graduated/Thesis Examined or in Final Stages. (Given is percentage time for supervision of student by myself and co-supervisor). Not listed are the numerous
are BSc(Hons) project students (on average 1 per year (1987-2012)) and several foreign exchange students from German universities of Heidelberg, Leipzig, Hamburg, Technical Univ. München and
Erlangen who over the years spent periods of 2 months to a year in our laboratory.
