End-of-life disposal

This label is a requirement of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive 2002/96/EC, which applies to companies that manufacture, sell, distribute, or treat electrical and electronic equipment in the European Economic Area (EEA). The Directive aims to reduce the waste arising from electrical and electronic equipment and to improve the environmental performance of all those involved in the lifecycle of these products.

The ‘crossed-out wheeled bin’ indicates that the product must NOT be disposed of with other waste at the end of its life – it must be recycled.

Some EU countries have a temporary derogation – they do not have to meet the WEEE recycling targets at this time. Whether you are within the EU or not, your supplier will be able to advise you of any local recycling requirements.

Working safely at height

All health and safety regulations must be adhered to when operating at heights. This includes, but is not limited to:• Where it is necessary to prevent injury, you must do all that is reasonably practicable to prevent anything

falling.

• If it is not reasonably practicable, you must ensure that no one is injured by anything falling.

• You must ensure that nothing is:

– thrown or tipped from height if it is likely to injure anyone;– stored in such a way that its movement is likely to injure anyone.

• If the workplace contains an area in which there is a risk of someone being struck by a falling object or person, you must ensure that the area is clearly indicated and that (as far as reasonably practicable) unauthorised people are unable to reach it.

– Ensure that no work is done at height if it is safe and reasonably practicable to do it other than at height– Ensure that the work is properly planned, appropriately supervised, and carried out in as safe a way as is

reasonably practicable– Ensure that the work complies with any local health and safety regulations– Take any necessary precautions with equipment used, to ensure that the work at height is safe and that

there is no risk of the equipment falling– Ensure that people cannot pass under the area of work, while work is taking place.

General and electrical safety notices

Warnings• All installations must be carried out by fully competent and trained personnel, in accordance with the

instructions given in this guide. If working at height, proper safety procedures must be adhered to and the relevant safety equipment must be used.

• The outdoor unit must be mounted so that contact by a member of the public is impossible. For example the unit should be positioned on a roof or mast with no public access, and where access to service personnel is restricted. Where possible the unit shall be positioned at a minimum height of 3m above the ground to ensure that access to the unit is restricted. The equipment is intended to be installed in a restricted access location. The equipment should be accessed only when it is powered off, and has been allowed to cool down.

• According to ENV 50166-2, an ODU should be installed in a location such that it is not possible for a member of the public, in the normal course of their work or everyday activities, to gain access closer than distances specified in RF safety notices on page 5 to the front of the radome.

• All units requiring a nominal –48V DC supply must be supplied via a –48V DC safety extra-low voltage (SELV) supply in accordance with IEC 60950-1:2001. Additionally the Power Supply Unit shall withstand surges in accordance with EN 60065:2001 Cl. 10.1 or an equivalent. The supply used for these units shall be in accordance with ETSI EN 300 132-2.

• To avoid electric shock, do not connect SELV circuits to telephone-network voltage (TNV) circuits. LAN ports (Ethernet) contain SELV circuits, and WAN ports (E1) contain TNV circuits. The LAN and WAN ports both use RJ45 connectors. Use caution when connecting cables.

• On the front of all units requiring a –48V DC supply a user-supplied frame chassis earthing conductor, 1.5mm2 cross-sectional area (or 16AWG) or larger, must be permanently connected from the frame/chassis earth bolt (identified by the graphic symbol 60417-IEC-5020) to an earth point in the building installation. This bolt should not be used as a Protective Earth Terminal.

Cautions• All VectaStar equipment should be installed within a lightning protection zone.

• The Ethernet interface shall only be connected to a SELV interface. The E1 interface shall only be connected to a TNV-1 interface. Ensure that all cables are professionally installed. Care must be taken to ensure that no safety hazard may result of installation. On installation by a professional engineer, the plastic tags on the RJ45 connectors shall be broken to ensure that it is difficult to remove the cable once installed.

• Any pigtails pre-fitted to ODUs form an integral part of the overall system and must not be removed as this will invalidate any existing product warranty.

• Units have anti-tamper seals fitted. Breaking such seals will invalidate any existing product warranty.

• All units requiring a –48V DC supply should be powered by a SELV circuit (less than 60VDC) with less than 240VA available and meeting SELV failure modes. With connection to centralized DC power, install only in dedicated equipment rooms or the equivalent.

• The minimum distance between a Gigabit AP and Gigabit RT directly aligned, Line of Sight, is 100m. If the two units are closer than this, then the US CNR will degrade as the Gigabit AP will start to compress and some modulations may not be achievable.

• An ODU weighs up to 10kg (including the rear bracket). Be prepared for this when installing. The installation will be easier if performed by two people.

• All CBNL ODUs are designed to be fitted to a pole of diameter 42mm to 110mm, using the bracket supplied. If you want to use a different mounting system, you need to make your own arrangements.

• All connections at the ODU are rated to IP67. As an additional safeguard against water ingress over time, CBNL recommends the use of self-amalgamating tape in line with local practice, on all external cable connectors and joiners. Suitable tape is available from most suppliers of installation components.

• Where extreme climatic conditions are found, CBNL recommends the use of a flexible cable protection conduit for the external cabling to the ODU.

• Be sure that you are aware of any local building regulations and standards, and adhere to those that are relevant.

RF safety notices

Warnings

Locally applicable national and international RF safety requirements must be adhered to when installing the ODU and antenna. Please refer to CBNL Customer Services and local regulatory authorities for advice on compliance. As guidance, for a VectaStar Gigabit RT:• According to ENV 50166-2, the ODU, where fitted with a 0.6m parabolic antenna , should be installed in a

location such that it is not possible for workers or members of the public, in the normal course of their work or everyday activities, to gain access closer in front of the radome than the specified distances in the table below. The maximum EIRP is also given.

Indoor equipment requirements

The indoor equipment meets the requirements of ETSI EN 300-019-1-3 class 3.1 – for stationary use at weather protected locations. ETSI EN 300-019-1-3 class 3.1 is a combination of classes 3K3/3Z2/3Z4/3B1/3C2(3C1)/3S2/3M1 in IEC standard 60721-3-3 [1].

This class applies to a permanently temperature controlled enclosed location. Humidity is usually not controlled. Heating, cooling, forced ventilation and humidification are used as necessary to maintain the required conditions – especially where there is a significant difference between the room environment and the external ambient.

The climate-controlling systems could be periodically switched on or off but extremely high or low temperatures are prevented. This class applies to locations:• where installed equipment may be exposed to solar radiation and to heat radiation. It may also be exposed to

movements of the surrounding air due to draughts in buildings. They are not subjected to condensed water, precipitation, water from sources other than rain or icing

• without particular risks of biological attacks. This includes protective measures, e.g. special product design, or installations at locations of such construction that mould growth and attacks by animals, etc. are not probable

• with normal levels of contaminants experienced in urban areas with industrial activities scattered over the whole area and/or with heavy traffic

• without special precautions to minimize the presence of sand or dust, but which are not situated in proximity to sources of sand or dust

• with insignificant vibration and shock.

The conditions of this class may be found in:• normal living or working areas, e.g. living rooms, rooms for general use (theatres, restaurants)

• offices

• shops

• workshops for electronic assemblies and other electro-technical products

• telecommunication centres

• storage rooms for valuable and sensitive products.

Outdoor equipment requirements

The outdoor equipment meets the requirements of ETSI EN 300-019-1-4 classes 4.1E and 4.2H for stationary use at non-weather-protected locations. ETSI EN 300-019-1-4 Class 4.1E is a combination of classes 4Z5/4Z7/4B1/4C2(4C3)/4S2/4M5 in IEC 60721-3-4. Class 4.2H is a combination of classes 4K4H/4Z5/4Z7/4B1(4B2)/4C2(4C3)/4S2(4S3)/4M5 in IEC 60721-3-4 [1].

This class applies to locations:• which are directly exposed to an open-air climate, including solar radiation, movement of the surrounding air,

precipitation and water jets; splashing; water

• where mould growth, or attacks by animals but excluding termites, may occur;

• with normal levels of contaminants experienced in urban areas with industrial activities scattered over the whole area and/or with heavy traffic. It also applies to coastal areas;

NOTE 1: At locations in the immediate neighbourhood of industrial sources with chemical emissions either special precautions must be taken or a special chemical class must be chosen.

• in areas with sand or dust sources, including urban areas;

NOTE 2: At locations in geographical areas with wind-driven sand or dust in air special precautions must be taken or a special class for mechanically active substances must be chosen.

• where transmitted vibrations are experienced from machines or passing vehicles. Higher level shocks may be experienced e.g. from adjacent machines.

NOTE 3: More severe mechanical conditions are to be expected for equipment intended for public use. Special requirements should be stated for such equipment, e.g. protection against vandalism.

Note: In extreme environmental conditions, or for additional protection, installers may wish to consider placingODU cabling in a suitable outdoor duct.

1 Introduction

How to use this guideThe guide explains how to install current VectaStar Gigabit hardware as of the date on page 2. Customers with older hardware should refer to previous versions of this guide.

In this guide, you’ll find all the information necessary to install and commission a VectaStar Gigabit Remote Terminal (RT).

The structure of the guide follows the basic installation procedure. Some steps need to be performed at the warehouse, or on the ground at customer premises, before installing any items up a pole or mast.

Perform this step at the warehouse, before installing up a pole or mast1 Configuring a Gigabit Remote Terminal on page 13 explains how to configure an ODU with IP addressing and

channel information,before installing hardware up a pole or mast.

Install the ODU up a pole or mast1 Installing a VectaStar Gigabit ODU on page 21 explains how to install an ODU up a pole or mast, as well as

making up and installing the necessary cable runs.

Note: You will also need to refer to the antenna installation instructions. These are model-specific, and aresupplied in the antenna box.

Before you startYou need to bear the following points in mind:• Pay special attention to any site survey details or site design plan that exists – these should include

information on:

– Polarisation– ODU location and alignment of sector– Azimuth/elevation adjustment reference for ODU alignment– Lightning protection, power and data cable considerations – your site survey instructions should define any

such requirements (e.g. cable lengths, LP-GE usage).• Make sure there is a suitable place to route the cables through the external wall.

• Make sure the supplied cables will reach from your intended installation site to the indoor equipment. Remember to allow an extra 1m for strain relief at each end of power and signal cables.

2 Setting up an Installation Laptop PC

Installation Laptop PC requirementsTo configure and align a VectaStar Gigabit ODU, you need an Installation Laptop PC running VS Install Tool V3; this can be any Windows or Linux laptop/PC, with the following:• Java6 must be installed

• A single Ethernet interface. VS Install Tool V3 uses a built-in DHCP server. In order that this DHCP server runs correctly, the Installation Laptop PC must have a single Ethernet interface (two or more Ethernet interfaces may cause the IP allocation by the DHCP server to fail).

Before you can perform the configuration, you must take the following steps on the Installation Laptop PC:

1 Install Java6, if you have not already done so.

2 Download the VS Install Tool V3 application from the CBNL support site; see Downloading VS Install Tool V3 on page 10

3 Download and unpack the latest VectaStar software release from the CBNL support site. See Downloading the VectaStar ODU software on page 12.

4 Set the IP address of the Installation Laptop PC to be 192.168.1.254.

Downloading VS Install Tool V3You need to obtain the latest version of the Java app VectaStar VS Install Tool V3 from the CBNL support web site and save it onto your chosen Installation Laptop PC.

1 From the Installation Laptop PC, start a web browser and go to the following URL:http://www.cbnl.com/support

2 Click on the release software link.

3 Enter your username and password (these should have been previously supplied to you by CBNL) and click OK.

4 Save the file to a folder on the Installation Laptop PC (e.g. /tmp, or the Desktop).The file will be downloaded to your computer. It will be called something like vsinstall-3_x.jar.

5 Close the browser window.

Changing the Installation Laptop PC IP addressYou need to change the IP address of the Installation Laptop PC so it can communicate with the ODU in its factory default configuration.

Windows instructions

Detailed instructions will depend on your version of Windows. As an example, here are instructions fo Windows 7:

1 Open the properties for your Local Area Connection (TCP/IP):

2 Change the Installation Laptop PC IP address to 192.168.1.253.3 Change the Netmask to 255.255.255.0.4 Click OK.

Linux instructions1 On the Installation Laptop PC, open a shell window and enter the following command:

Downloading the VectaStar ODU software

You need to obtain the latest version of the VectaStar software (from the VectaStar CD-ROM or the CBNL support web site) and unpack it onto your chosen Installation Laptop PC.

To download from the CBNL support web site:

1 From the Installation Laptop PC, start a web browser and go to the following URL:http://www.cbnl.com/support

2 Click on the release software link.

3 Enter your username and password (these should have been previously supplied to you by CBNL) and click OK.

4 Click on the link for the most up-to-date software version. If the software release you require is not there, please contact Customer Services.

5 Click on the APC, CPE and EMS software only link.6 Save the file to a folder on the Installation Laptop PC (e.g. /tmp, or the Desktop).

The file will be downloaded to your computer (it will be called something like VSCD_N.x.y-z_SWOnly.tgz, where N is the major release).

7 Close the browser window.8 Navigate to the folder where you saved the tgz file.9 Unpack the tgz file. The method used will depend on your operating system.10 Locate the file you will need:

vectastar-N.x.y-z-cpe.zip

You will need to specify this file later in the upgrade/configuration process.

IntroductionThis chapter explains how to configure a VectaStarGigabit Remote Terminal using VS Install Tool V3 (the VectaStar java-based installer) on your chosen Installation Laptop PC.

Perform these instructions at the warehouse, or on the ground, before any physical installation up a pole or mast.

Before you start

Caution: Make sure all power is switched off before connecting or disconnecting an ODU. You may damage theequipment if you connect or disconnect the outdoor CAT-5e cable from the indoor equipment while it has powerapplied.

Required equipment

To perform the configuration steps in this section, you will need:• IDU-PI-60W, part of the Installer Kit

• Ethermet switch (see below)

• 2 x straight-through CAT-5 Ethernet cables

Recommendation: use an Ethernet switch

CBNL recommends that you use an Ethernet switch. This allows an ODU to auto-negotiate properly without being dependent on the Ethernet chipset in your chosen Installation Laptop PC, which in turn ensures a successful configuration.

If you attempt the configuration without using a switch and it fails, try again using a switch.

Start VS Install Tool V3 on the Installation Laptop PC1 Switch off the power to the IDU-PI-60W.

2 Boot up the Installation Laptop PC.3 Start VS Install Tool V3 on the Installation Laptop PC:

– (Windows/Mac) Double-click the vsinstall.jar file– (Linux) Run the following command:

You’ll see the initial screen:

Connect the Installation Laptop PC

To connect the Installation Laptop PC to the ODU you need to make the connections shown below.

1 Connect a straight-through Ethernet cable between the OUT port on the IDU-PI-60W and the RJ45 connector on the underside of the ODU.

2 Connect a straight-through Ethernet cable between the IN port on the IDU-PI-60W and the Ethernet switch.3 Connect a straight-through Ethernet cable from the Ethernet switch to the Ethernet port on the

Perform a full install1 On the Installation Laptop PC, in the VS Install Tool V3 main window select Upgrade or Install AP or RT and

click Next.

2 Select Load default AP or RT configuration (full install) and click Next.

– If you choose not to load the default configuration, VS Install Tool V3 only performs the upgrade procedure, and assumes there is already a saved config file on the ODU.

– If there is no previously saved config file, you will see an error message, and the complete upgrade/config procedure will be followed.

3 Browse to the file containing the VectaStar software release (vectastar-N.x.y-z-cpe.zip) you want to install and click Open:

4 Click Next. The VectaStar release files will start decompressing:

5 As prompted in the VS Install Tool V3 window, restart the ODU.

After about 20-30 seconds you will see some messages in the VS Install Tool V3 window:

6 Click Next and wait until the upgrade has completed.

Once the upgrade process has completed, VS Install Tool V3 will automatically start the configuration process.

Configuration steps

Set up channelisation1 Specify the number of available channels:

2 For each channel:– Click in the Downstream Freq field and enter the downstream frequency in kHz– Press Tab; the Upstream frequency will be filled in automatically– Press Tab and select a channel bandwidth from the drop-down menu

Set up network parameters1 Click Next and enter configuration details as described in the table below:

Note: If you change the ODU’s IP address or password, VS Install Tool V3 automatically remembers the newdetails for the remainder of this session (i.e. while the Installation Laptop PC is still physically connected).

2 Make a note of any changes you make (especially Hostname and IP address).

Set the unit’s management password1 Click Next and specify a management password for the ODU:

– Check Default password, or

Parameter Description

Hostname A name used to represent this ODU in the EMS applications (such as vsodu).

IP address Local IP Address of the ODU. The default is 192.168.1.1• Providing a valid IP address potentially allows access from any devices connected

to the ODU• Setting to 0.0.0.0 effectively makes the ODU unreachable (and makes the network

more secure). However, subsequently the only way to reconfigure the ODU is to connect with the Installation Configuration Tool and use the Recover unit option

Netmask Usually 255.255.255.0.

Gateway Gateway IP address.

Syslog IP address IP address of the computer to which syslog messages are sent.

VLAN ID For use with tagged traffic networks; enter the integer value for the VLAN tag. Use in conjunction with the interface field.

SNMP community Clear text string used for SNMP authentication (default is public).

– Uncheck Default password and enter a new password twice.

2 Make a note of the password; without it, users will not be able to manage the ODU.

Set up VectaStar compatibility mode1 Select the over-the-air compatibility mode:

– yes: ODU can work interoperably with VS1 radio networks– no: ODU works with VS2/VSG networks

Complete the configuration1 Click Next to confirm that you want to configure the ODU.

2 Click Next to load the configuration.3 Click Finish to reboot the ODU:

Power down the ODU1 Exit VS Install Tool V3.

2 Disconnect the Installation Laptop PC from the indoor equipment.3 Disconnect the ODU from the power.

The ODU is now ready to be installed up a pole or mast.

Starting the configuration process from scratch

If you want to configure an ODU without performing an upgrade, proceed as follows:

1 On the Installation Laptop PC, in the VS Install Tool V3 main window select Configure AP or Terminal and click Next.

2 As prompted in the VS Install Tool V3 window, restart the ODU.After about 20-30 seconds you will see some messages in the VS Install Tool V3 window:

3 Click Next and follow the steps in Configuration steps on page 18.

Aligning an ODU

Running a syslog session

To run a syslog session and save syslog messages to a text file:

1 Select Syslog from the main screen and click Next.

2 Browse to the folder where you want to save the syslog file, enter a file name and click Open.The syslog process will bgin collecting data.

3 When you want to stop the process, click Finish.

4 Installing a VectaStar Gigabit ODU

OverviewThis chapter explains how to install VectaStar Gigabit ODUs (VSG ODU-S and VSG ODU) for all frequencies and polarisations.

Make sure you have read and understood the information in Safety notices on page 4.

You will also need to refer to the model-specific antenna installation instructions, supplied in the antenna box.

Overview – installing an ODU

These are the steps you will need to take:

Note: Only use the minimum length of cable necessary when installing a VectaStar Gigabit ODU. Excess cableshould be trimmed rather than leaving coils of cable.In extreme environmental conditions, or for additional protection, installers may wish to consider placing ODUcabling in a suitable outdoor duct.

Carrying/lashing ODUs

VectaStar ODUs have both a carry handle and one or more lashing points.

Caution: If you need to lash rope to an ODU to lift it, only use the correct lashing point (the small circular hole asindicated below). Do not lash to the carry handle, as it is not designed for this purpose.

Check the ODU polarisationIt is very important that you install the ODU with the correct polarisation for the sector, as detailed on any site-specific installation instructions.

(Gigabit antennas are not polarised; the polarisation is controlled by the ODU, as follows:• VSG ODU-S – Polarisation is controlled simply by the orientation of the ODU-S.

VSG ODU (not ODU-S): Changing the ODU polarisation if necessary

Note: Refer to the diagram on page 22.

These instructions do not apply to a VSG ODU-S.

To convert a VSG ODU from its default vertical polarisation to horizontal polarisation:

1 Undo the four M4x20 bolts in the RF adapter.

2 Lift out the RF adapter (keep the bolts in place)3 Remove the ‘O’ ring from the recessed groove on the face plate, rub a small amount of silicone grease onto it,

and replace it.4 Clean the mating surfaces thoroughly with dry cloths or tissues; ensure the aperture is completely clear of any

silicone grease.5 Lift out the polarisation twister, flip it over (one face has an ‘H’ engraved on it, the other has a ‘V’) and replace

it. Two locating pins ensure the polarisation twister fits in the correct rotational orientation. Ensure that the orientation matches the views on page 22.

6 Rotate the RF adapter 90° to set the new polarisation and replace it on the polarisation twister (two posts on the twister ensure it will only fit in the correct orientation). Ensure that the orientation matches the views on page 22.

7 Replace and tighten the four M4x20 bolts.

Assemble and mount the antenna on the poleInstructions for assembling and mounting the antenna are dependent on the type of antenna. Please refer to the separate instructions supplied in the antenna box.

Mount the ODU onto the antenna bracket

Caution: In all cases, the ODU should be mounted with the carry handle at the top and the connectors at thebottom.

Silicone grease is needed to fully waterproof the ODU-to-antenna coupling. However, you must avoid getting any silicone grease into the RF aperture.

Note: Refer to the diagram on page 22.

1 Put a very small amount of silicone grease around any ‘O’ rings:

Note: If you remove and refit the antenna, you’ll need to re-grease the ‘O’ ring, but clean the mating surfacesthoroughly with dry cloths or tissues; ensure the aperture is completely clear of any silicone grease.

2 If fitted, remove yellow plastic dust cap from the RF aperture on the ODU.3 If you have not already done so, remove any protective tape from the waveguide apertures.4 (ODU-S only) Ensure you are installing with the correct polarisation, as detailed on any site-specific installation

instructions:

5 Offer up the ODU to the antenna, aligning the four retaining clips.

6 Gently push the ODU onto the antenna RF adaptor. Take care not to damage the ‘O’ ring.7 Secure the ODU by fastening the four retaining clips.8 Thread a security cable, or large cable ties, through the holes in the ends of the retaining clips, to prevent the

clips coming undone.

Connect an earthing strap to the ODU1 Using a 6mm spanner or socket drive remove the M6 bolt and shake-proof washer and connect an earthing

strap to the rear of the ODU. This should be a 15mm2 (or 6AWG), braided cable. When re-assembling make sure the washer is between the earth strap connector and the M6 bolt (not between the ODU casing and the earth strap connector).

2 Attach the other end of the earthing strap to a suitable earth point below the ODU.

Align the ODU

Note: Please refer to the detailed instructions supplied in the antenna box. The instructions below are just a briefoverview.

There are two stages to alignment:• Roughly align the ODU so it’s pointing in the right general direction; use the instructions below, but don’t

tighten to final torque settings

• Accurately align the ODU while using the digital voltmeter or Installation Configuration Tool (as described on page 38) to maximise the received power; you’ll need to come back to the instructions below to complete this process. Then tighten to final torque settings.

Note: CBNL recommends sweeping though the full azimuth range of the ODU and then returning to the highestnoted value, to ensure alignment on the main lobe rather than a side lobe.

1 Loosen the four Azimuth Lock bolts and perform an azimuth alignment. Retighten the Azimuth Lock bolts.

2 Loosen the two Antenna Mounting bolts slightly and perform an elevation alignment. Re-tighten the Antenna Mounting bolts.

3 Check azimuth alignment, and perform fine adjustment if necessary.4 Check elevation alignment, and perform fine adjustment if necessary.5 Repeat the azimuth and elevation adjustment to fine-tune the alignment. It is normal to have to repeat this

process two or three times to get a good alignment.

Notes• All connections at the ODU are rated to IP67. As an additional safeguard against water ingress over time,

CBNL recommends the use of self-amalgamating tape in line with local practice, on all external cable connectors and joiners. Suitable tape is available from most suppliers of installation components.

• Where extreme climatic conditions are found, CBNL recommends the use of a flexible cable protection conduit for the external cabling to the ODU.

• Only use the minimum length of cable necessary when installing a VectaStar Gigabit ODU. Excess cable should be trimmed rather than leaving coils of cable.

Use FTP cable

For compliance with the EMC requirements of the R&TTE Directive, foil-shielded twisted pair (FTP) cable must be used for ODU cable runs between the power injection device and the ODU.

Install any LP-GEs (optional)

Your site installation instructions will specify whether an LP-GE is required for lightning protection. Installation instructions are given in a separate chapter; see Installing an LP-GE on page 43.

Terminating the cable – FTP cable

To terminate a CAT-5E cable and install the weather-proof cable gland:

1 Familiarise yourself with the components.– 1: rear retainer– 2: main body of cable gland– 3: RJ45 connector

2 Slide the cable through the rear retainer (1), and main body (2).3 Do not tighten the rear retainer to the main body of the gland yet.

4 (If there is an outer and inner sleeve, use the cable stripping device to strip off approximately 35mm (1.38") from the outer sleeve.

5 Using the cable-stripping device, strip off approximately 20mm (0.787") off the inner sleeve from the free end of the CAT-5E cable.

6 Cut off the clear plastic wrapping (if present) and the stripping thread (if present).7 Peel back and cut off the foil shielding.8 Leave the drain wire separated from the 8 cores.9 Untwist the four pairs. Arrange in the correct order for a straight-through configuration

and trim to 15mm (0.60") beyond the end of the inner grey sleeve. 10 Fold the drain wire back along the cable.11 Feed the cores into the RJ45 connector (3).

12 Push the cable in until the cores go into the correct channels within the connector. If the cores have been cut to the correct length, they should fit to the end of the connector, and you should be able to see the ends of the cores.

Note: The drain wire must make contact with the metal shroud of the RJ-45 connector.

13 Place the RJ45 connector into the crimp tool and crimp it.

14 Trim the drain wire so it does not protrude from the RJ45 connector.15 Visually inspect the termination to ensure all the wires have been crimped in the connector.

16 IMPORTANT! Align the RJ45 connector’s locking tab with the wide slot on the front of the cable gland.

17 IMPORTANT! Depress the RJ45 locking tab and gently pull the CAT-5E cable so that the RJ45 connector fits into the plug assembly. This is essential for proper connection to the ODU later on (and means you will not hear the usual audible click when you make that RJ45 connection).

18 While still holding the CAT-5E cable (to ensure the RJ45 connector remains properly seated in the plug assembly), tighten the rear retainer onto the main body.

Caution: Ensure cable does not rotate as rear retainer is tightened.

CAT-5e ODU: Connect power/data cable

1 Unscrew the dust cover from the CAT-5e connector on the underside of the ODU.

2 Making sure the RJ45 locking tab remains properly seated in the cable gland, screw the CAT-5e data cable gland into the connector on the underside of the ODU.

Caution: Ensure the RJ45 connector remains properly seated in the weather-proof cable gland. The RJ45connector will not make an audible click when you fit the cable gland; this is normal. Do not be tempted to pushthe RJ45 connector out of the cable gland and connect it before fitting the cable gland; this will cause animproper connection and force the internal RJ45 socket back inside the body of the ODU by a few millimetres.See page 28.

If there is a problem

If you do not follow the above instructions exactly, the internal RJ45 socket can be pushed a few millimeters inside the ODU (it is pushed by the RJ45 connector on the end of the CAT-5e cable as you tighten up the cable gland).

To correct this:

1 Loosen (but do not completely remove) the cable gland’s rear retainer.

2 Unscrew and remove the main body of the cable gland from the ODU, but leave the RJ45/CAT-5e cable connected to the ODU.

3 Gently pull on the CAT-5e cable until you feel the internal socket move back to its correct position.4 Remove the RJ45/CAT-5e cable from the ODU.5 IMPORTANT! Align the RJ45 connector’s locking tab with the wide slot on the front of the

cable gland. 6 IMPORTANT! Depress the RJ45 locking tab and gently pull the CAT-5E cable so that the

RJ45 connector fits into the plug assembly. This is essential for proper connection to the ODU (and means you will not hear the usual audible click when you make that RJ45 connection).

7 While still holding the CAT-5E cable (to ensure the RJ45 connector remains properly seated in the plug assembly), tighten the rear retainer onto the main body.

Caution: Ensure cable does not rotate as rear retainer is tightened.

8 Making sure the RJ45 locking tab remains properly seated in the cable gland, screw the cable gland into the connector on the underside of the ODU.

5 VectaStar Gigabit indoor connections

OverviewThis chapter explains how to power a VectaStar Gigabit Remote Terminal and make any indoor connections.

You will need:• (–48V DC 2-core power)

– IDU-PSU-70W or – in-building –48V DC supply

• (CAT-5 power)

– IDU-GPI or – IDU-PI-60W

• Fast Ethernet connection (if required), one of the following configurations (in order of preference):

– IDU-4VL-4E1-1U & VSG-DON-4VL or– IDU-4VL-4E1-1U & –48V DC in-building supply and IDU-GPI or– IDU-4VL-4E1-1U & 110/220V mains supply plus IDU-PI-60W and IDU-GPI

Make sure you have read and understood the information in Safety notices on page 4.

Warnings• For a first-time installation, all connections must be made with units powered off. If connections are made to

units when powered on (e.g. network connection), ESD precautions must be undertaken when making the connections, to ensure that no electrostatic discharge is possible.

• ESD precautions must be taken when handling, connecting or disconnecting cables at indoor equipment.

Note: For details of power cable requirements, and connector types and wiring instructions, please see Cablesand connectors on page 47.

Recommended installation locations

The indoor equipment meets the requirements of ETSI EN 300-019-1-3 class 3.1 – for stationary use at non-weather protected locations. Please see Indoor equipment requirements on page 5.

Installing an IDU-GPIThis configuration provides a single Ethernet connection to the customer network. If you require multiple E1 and Ethernet connections, you must also install an IDU-4VL-4E1-1U, as described on page 34.

Note: The IDU-GPI must be permanently connected to protective earth, using a green-and-yellow insulationcoloured cable with a minimum cross sectional area of 1.5mm2.

Mounting IDU-GPIs

The IDU-GPI can be wall mounted or rack mounted.

Wall mounting

To wall mount an IDU-GPI, you need to change the orientation of the mounting plates:

1 Remove the cross-head screws that fix the mounting plates to the unit.

2 Rotate the mounting plates by 90 degrees and refit, as shown (so that the IDU-GPI lies flat against the wall with its connectors uppermost).

3 Offer the IDU-GPI up to the wall and mark the position of the screw holes in the mounting plates.4 Drill two holes at the marked positions.5 Using appropriate wall fixings, place the IDU-GPI in position and screw into place.

Rack mounting a single IDU-GPI

To mount a single IDU-GPI in a rack:

1 Fit a rack mounting plate to the left or right side of the unit as appropriate (you can fit a unit to either side of a rack, or fit two units into the same 1U space).

2 Fix the unit into the rack using standard 19-inch rack fixings.

Earthing IDU-GPIs

Note: The IDU-GPI must be permanently connected to protective earth, using a green-and-yellow insulationcoloured cable with a minimum cross sectional area of 1.5mm2.

The lefthand IDU-GPI earthing studs are fitted with a crimp connector. To earth an IDU-GPI:

1 Crimp a 1.5mm2 (or 16AWG) or larger earthing cable into the lefthand earth connector.

2 Ensure the lefthand nut is fully tightened onto the stud and washer.3 Ensure the nut on the righthand stud remains fully tightened (even though it is not used as an earthing point)4 Connect the other end of the earthing cable to a suitable earth.

Caution: You must fit one earthing strap per IDU-GPI.

Installing an ODU Gigabit Ethernet (GE) cable

To connect the ODU GE cable to the IDU-GPI:

1 Terminate the GE cable (from the ODU) using an RJ45 connector (straight-through Ethernet wiring system).

2 Plug the terminated cable into the ODU PORT on the IDU-GPI.

Powering an IDU-GPI

Powering the IDU-GPI from a –48V DC supply

1 Fit the green 2-way plug (supplied) to the end of the power cord, using the Wiring scheme for 2-way power plug below.

2 Fit the hood to the 2-way plug.3 Connect the 2-way plug assembly to the INPUT socket on the front of the IDU-GPI.

Powering the IDU-GPI from a 110/220V supply

To power the IDU-GPI from a 110/220V mains supply, you will need to use an IDU-PSU-70W:

1 Remove the terminal block from the end of the IDU-PSU-70W’s power cord.

2 Fit the green 2-way plug(supplied) to the end of the power cord, using the Wiring scheme for 2-way power plug below.

3 Fit the hood to the 2-way plug.4 Connect the 2-way plug assembly to the INPUT socket on the front of the IDU-GPI.

Do not switch on at the power outlet yet.

Installing an IDU-PI-60W

Note: Mount the IDU-PI-60W on a vertical wall, as close as possible to the point of entry of the CAT-5e cablefrom the ODU. It should also be close to a suitable power-outlet.

Perform the installation

To install an IDU-PI-60W:

5 Offer the IDU-PI-60W up to the wall and mark the position of the two screw holes.6 Drill two holes at the marked positions.7 Using appropriate fixings, place the IDU-PI-60W in position and screw into place.8 Terminate the CAT-5e cable (from the ODU) using an RJ45 connector (straight-through Ethernet wiring

system).9 Plug the ODU CAT-5e cable into the OUT socket on the IDU-PI-60W.10 Connect the IDU-PI-60W to a mains outlet using the appropriate mains lead.

Do not switch on at the mains outlet yet.

6 Aligning a Gigabit Remote Terminal (RT)

IntroductionThis chapter explains how to align a VSG Remote Terminal.

Once complete, this process enables the User to register with a suitable Gigabit Hub or ZFS, without having been explicitly provisioned on a VNMS Server.

There are two methods available for aligning a VSG RT:• Using a Digital Voltmeter, via the BNC connector on the ODU. This method only requires one person.

• As above, but also using VS Install Tool V3 on the Installation Laptop PC (connected to the indoor equipment) to monitor and save received power and SNR readings. This method requires two people (one to monitor the readings on the Installation Laptop PC, and one to physically move the ODU).

Before you start

Caution: Make sure all power is switched off before connecting or disconnecting an ODU. You may damage theequipment if you connect or disconnect the outdoor CAT-5e cable from the indoor equipment while it has powerapplied.

Aligning a VSG RT with a digital voltmeterThis is where you will need to make fine adjustments to the azimuth and elevation of the ODU. See page 25. Only move the ODU a little at a time, and wait for the meter reading to settle before moving it again.

Note: CBNL recommends that alignment is preformed (adjusting the azimuth and elevation of the ODU) whenmeasuring RXP. Switching to SNR can be done once the unit is aligned, for information. This is because the RXPis updated more frequently and is a more stable measurement.

1. Fit BNC end of cable to BNC connector on ODU2. Fit red banana plug to Digital Voltmeter (DVM) voltage input (VΩ)3. Fit black banana plug to DVM common input (COM)4. Switch DVM to 20V DC (V ) range5. Power on ODU and wait for a reading of between –0.3V and –0.9V6. Note received power (Rx power):

–0.3V to –0.9V means –30dBm to –90dBm7. Adjust ODU azimuth and elevation to achieve best RX power level e.g. –50dBm (–0.50V) is better than –55dBm (–0.55V)8. Remove black banana plug, touch to red banana plug for 1 second.

This toggles the measurement between Rx power and SNR. 9. Reinsert black banana plug to DVM common input (COM)10. Read SNR: +0.3V to +3.2V means +3dB to +32dB11. Record the measured Rx power and SNR levels12. Disconnect cable from ODU BNC socket and replace metal cover

7 Lightning protection for CAT-5e cables

OverviewThis chapter explains how to provide lightning protection for ODU CAT-5e power cables:

Installing an LP-GE

Overview

The LP-GE is a CAT-5e in-line device which is used where only a CAT-5e connection to the ODU is needed. One LP-GE should be placed adjacent to the wall ingress. Additional LP-GEs may be used along the CAT-5e cable as needed.

Note: All equipment must be installed within the building cone of protection.

This chapter explains how to install and mount an LP-GE to provide lightning protection for the CAT-5e Ethernet cable on a VectaStar Gigabit ODU.

The use of LP-GEs is optional. However, CBNL recommends the use of at least one LP-GE at the building ingress point in regions where lightning is considered a threat. Additional protection can be provided by adding LP-GEs in the cable run as required.

Before commencing work on site, the installer should consult the site design document which should indicate the number and location of any LP-GEs to be installed. The site design document should also indicate how the LP-GEs are to be mounted.

Cable lengths and dimensions

Note: Outdoor cable is solid core; indoor cable is flexible multi-core.

• Maximum cable length from ODU to grounded wall plate is 80m.

• Maximum cable length from grounded wall plate to indoor equipment (i.e. first network device) is 10m.

• In order to fit into the LP-GE’s cable clamps, CAT-5e cable diameter must be between 0.18" (4.6mm) and 0.35" (8.9mm).

• Maximum length of ground wire is 3' (0.91m).

Cautions• The LP-GE earthing point must always be connected to a suitable earth using a minimum size of 8.5mm2 (or

8AWG) braid, to ensure proper lightning protection. The maximum length of braid is 3' (0.91m).

• The LP-GE must be mounted vertically, with the CAT-5e cables exiting from the bottom of the unit, to prevent water ingress.

• All VectaStar equipment should be installed within a lightning protection zone.

Terminate the CAT-5e cables

All VectaStar CAT-5e connections use straight-through Ethernet wiring.

Note: Any earth drain wire or braided shield must make contact with the metal shell of the RJ45 connector.

Install the CAT-5e cables

1 Using a large flat-bladed screwdriver, remove the two screws securing the LP-GE lid.

2 Using a cross-head screwdriver, loosen (but do not remove) the two cable clamps.3 Insert the terminated CAT-5e cables into the RJ45 sockets inside the LP-GE. It does not matter which cable is

connected to which socket: the unit is bi-directional.4 Ensure that the CAT-5e cables pass through the cable clamps.5 Tighten the cable clamps.6 Replace the LP-GE lid and secure using the two screws.

bolts (0.190" or 3/16").

Earth the LP-GE

To earth the LP-GE case, you must attach an earthing strap of at least 8.5mm2 (or 8AWG) to the unit’s case.

1 Crimp one end of an earthing strap into the supplied ring connector.

2 Using the supplied bolt attach the earthing strap to one of the two marked earth points on the unit, ensuring the supplied star washer is between the crimped ring connector and the unit.

3 Attach the other end of the earthing strap to a suitable earth point.

A Cables and connectors

OverviewThis chapter explains how to terminate various cables and connectors, as well as providing information on –48V power supplies and minimum recommended specifications.

Note: All cables and connectors should be sourced from CBNL where possible.

CAT-5e cables

All CAT-5e connections between indoor and outdoor units are wired as straight-through cables.

CBNL ODU RJ45 connectors support CAT-5e cable diameters in the range 4.6mm to 7.9mm.

Cable lengths, where specified, are based on the following assumptions:• All outdoor cabling must be solid-core

• All indoor cabling is flexible, multi-stranded

• Cabling is CAT-5e. If you want to use CAT-6 cabling:

– You must use shielded cable– You must be able to source RJ45 connectors that are compatible with the RJ45 connectors on CBNL

equipment– Cable core size must be at least 24AWG.

Making straight-through Ethernet cables

The diagram below shows how to wire a 2-core power cable (with shield) using a Souriau connector, viewed from the rear of the connection plate.

–48V power supply requirements

VectaStar equipment operates with Power supplies that meet the requirements of ETSI 300 132 (48V DC supplies voltage range 40.5V to 57V).

Warning: All units requiring a nominal –48V DC supply must be supplied via a –48V DC safety extra-low voltage (SELV) supply in accordance with IEC 60950-1:2001. Additionally the PowerSupply Unit shall withstand surges in accordance with EN 60065:2001 Cl. 10.1 or an equivalent. The supply used for the unit shall be in accordance with ETSI EN 300 132-2.
