Give Thanks!A special thank you is extended to you, our members and friends for making our Fall Conference a great success. WOW! What an awesome event! The Evaluation and Humorous Speech Contests were the highlights of the conference. We are all proud of our contestants who represented their Divisions. Congratulations to our contest winners!

We were thrilled to have the 2008 World Champion of Public Speaking LaShunda Rundles as our special guest. Her presentations were life changing! I had the pleasure of meeting many First Timers and was pleased to observe their level of excitement. We all had a great time! We truly appreciate your support.

Attending District Conferences provides you with the opportunity to meet your District leaders and fellow Toastmasters from other divisions. If you missed our Fall Conference, make plans to attend our Spring Conference May 4 – 6, 2012 in Sarasota Florida under the theme ‘Circus Circus’. This will be our last conference before the District splits in July 2012, so you won’t want to miss it!

So what’s next for you? Beginning December 2011, the District will hold Toastmasters Leadership Institutes (TLIs) for all club officers and members in a location near you. These sessions which are mandatory for Club Officers are designed for all members. Here you can learn something new, share your successes and challenges then socialize and network with other members. Use the TLIs as opportunities to get ideas for a successful second half, meet new people, reflect on the first six months of the year, and discuss what went well and what could be improved. Remember the commitment you made to your club as an officer or the commitment you made to your club when you became a member. We look forward to seeing you there.

In a few days, we will celebrate Thanksgiving. It’s a time to spend with family and close friends. As you celebrate this season, take time to reflect on the things you value most and give thanks. The District leadership team is thankful for those who serve to protect our countries-The Bahamas and The United States of America. We give thanks for those who made ‘the ultimate sacrifice’ to ensure our safety. They are our heroes! We give thanks especially for our Toastmaster Veterans. We love and appreciate you!

The District leadership team is also thankful for the opportunity to serve you. We give thanks for your willingness to work in your respective clubs and for serving as mentors and coaches. Our goal is to help you to be the best Toastmaster you can be. We want you to achieve great success in your clubs and we are here to help you do just that. We give thanks for you.

Happy Thanksgiving!Kindest regards

Fall Conference RecapBy: Matt Kinsey, LGET East

If you missed the Fall Conference in West Palm Beach, then you missed a great time. We had a fantastic weekend. The Evaluation Contest on Friday night was tough for the judges. Test speaker, Marlene Bryan shared the impact her father had on her life with the audience. The winner of the contest was Sashane McDonald from Division I. We also had our keynote presentation from 2008 World Champion of Public Speaking LaShunda Rundles, who told us we need to embrace the truth and not run from it. Saturday’s educational sessions were a big hit. We had 13 different sessions ranging from humor to leadership to personal branding. The feedback from the attendees demonstrated the abilities and talents of our Toastmasters from right here in District 47. If you missed the Roast of our President’s Distinguished Immediate Past District Governor, Distinguished Toastmaster Rick Furbush, then you missed a barrel of laughs. Our Roast Master, Cathy Koyanagi was the glue that held the entire Roast together as 11 different people put Rick on a spit and turned up the heat. The video is available on our District Facebook page if you’d like to see it. After the roast, Rick recognized his team from last year, culminating in four special awards for 2010-2011. John Schneyer from Division D was named the Area Governor of the Year. Francis Molina from Division B was named the Division Governor of the Year and Ron Rice, our current Lt. Gov. Marketing West, was named Toastmaster of the Year. A new award was established this year in memory of Joseph Miller. Our 2010-2011 Joseph Miller Class Act Award went to Tony Longley from Division I. The Saturday night Humorous Speech Contest was tremendous. The winner was Terry Babb from Division H with his speech titled “Anything can happen in Toastmasters.” On Sunday morning, we had a final session with LaShunda Rundles. Our conference chair, Lynda Hammond, DTM did an amazing job with the entire conference. Thank you also to our Divisions for their assistance in taking care of key areas of the conference. As with any event, there are many people who are needed to make things happen. If you had any part in organizing, promoting or helping at the Fall Conference – THANK YOU! Based upon recommendations from our Division Governors and members, the following Toastmasters deserve some extra appreciation for their outstanding efforts in the success of the Fall Conference. If you had a great time at the Conference, please thank them for all they did! Jason Springer and Freeman Morey were seemingly everywhere pitching in with whatever needed to get done, whether it was a big task or a small one. Samantha O’Neil organized all of our hospitality and kept the music going downstairs Sunday morning until 2 a.m. Twice! Brandon Kinsey took care of all of the sound, moved equipment, and stayed up late to tear down equipment. Jeanine Kinsey was behind the scenes helping in so many areas that I can’t even list them all. Steven Harwood stepped up when the train from Tampa was delayed and made sure everyone made it to the hotel. Steve Zeris was constantly picking up on little things that needed to get done with a smile and a cheerful attitude. Our registration chairs, Jennifer Krumlauf, Michelle Balaun, and Leah von Leu made sure conference attendees got the right meals, got name tags and bags, and were able to check in smoothly. Our Sgt. at Arms West, Chris Hedges, didn’t stop all weekend, no matter what needed to be done. Myrna Brooks made sure that our World Champion was picked up on time and got back to the airport as well. On behalf of the entire conference team, we thank you for your time, energy and commitment to the members of District 47! Make your plans to attend the Spring Conference in Sarasota, May 4-6, 2012 now! You don’t want to miss it!

To Live Like You Were Dyin’By: Chris Hedges - Sgt-at-Arms, D47-West

Where were you November 4th – 6th? If you were not at the District 47 Fall Conference in West Palm Beach you missed the opportunity to meet a truly inspirational human being. 2008 World Champion of Public Speaking LaShunda Rundles was priceless!

In her keynote address Friday night, she made this statement, “Everyone should have to go through a near death experience!” She did not make that statement lightly. If you didn’t know, LaShunda is battling a disease called Lupus.

I spent some time reflecting on that statement after I was nearly careened off the road twice on my way to pick up my club coach for my Wednesday Toastmasters meeting. Later that day, I put my kayak in the water and headed out for an extended trip down the Intercoastal. A song by Tim McGraw was the last thing on the radio, and as such it was stuck in my head the entire two hours that I was out on the water.

I can recall the lyrics so clearly - “I was in my early forties with a lot of life before me”. I don’t know about you but I think of life that way. There is always going to be tomorrow.

“I spent most of the next days, lookin’ at the x-rays, Talkin’ ‘bout the options and talkin’ ‘bout sweet time.” Or maybe tomorrow isn’t as certain as it once was.

“How’s it hit ya, when you get that kind of news. Man what ya do.” So what do you do when you get that kind of news? How do you act? Do you treat your fellow man just a little better?

“I went sky divin’, I went rocky mountain climbin’, I went 2.7 seconds on a bull name Fumanchu. And I loved deeper, And I spoke sweeter, And I gave forgiveness I’ve been denying, someday I hope you get the chance, To live like you were dyin’.”

“…I was finally the husband, That most the time I wasn’t. And I became a friend a friend would like to have. And all the sudden goin’ fishing, Wasn’t such an imposition…Well I finally read the good book, And I took a good long hard look at what I’d do If I could do it all again. And then…”

So I ask again, what might you do if you got that kind of news? What kind of person would you show up as?

“…To live like you were dyin’.”

I think we discover our greatest self when we face our own mortality. The inconsequential is left by the wayside, and the important things in life are accentuated. Material things that once may have dominated our lives take a back seat to the people who bring meaning to us. It did not happen over night, and it was a painful journey to get to that frame of mind. However, the greatest thing that could have ever happened to me is when my doctor walked into the room and told me it wasn’t a matter of if; it was a matter of when cancer killed me. Since then, all the pettiness has faded away, and I make every moment count because I don’t know when it will be my last.

LaShunda was unable to be with us on Saturday, but she spent several hours with us on Sunday. She would still probably be answering questions if she weren’t told to bring the session to a close. She wasn’t too happy about that. She felt like she short-changed us. If near death experiences can produce people like LaShunda Rundles, then I wish everyone had the opportunity to live like they were dying. I believe this world would be a much better place if they did.

Night of Stars – A Division D ProductionBy: Karen Katz – Division D Contest Chair

Lights, laughter and stars dazzled audience members as they saw contestants on stage at the fabulous West Palm Beach Improv Comedy Club on October 1, 2011, competing for the titles of the 2011 Toastmasters Division D Best Humorous Speaker and the Division’s Best Evaluator.

Dignitaries from all over joined the audience in this magnificent adventure. Among them, were Pamela Rolle (District 47 Governor), Kristina Kihlberg (Past District 47 Governor), Hieu Huynh (District 47 Lt. Gov. Mkt. East), Area Governors Jerry Fernandez, Michelle Balaun, Ed Korkowski, Joe Duerr, Rosa Ayer and Lou Brown.

Division D Governor, Kristin De Luca, and Contest Chair Karen Katz along with their key action team (Arleen Roberts – Raffle Queen, Kim Knapp – Evaluation Contest Master, Susan Canarick – Inspirational Sgt at Arms, Carolyn Mann – Registration Chair, Debi Richichi – Raffle Queen, Jean Ellerie – Registration Chair and Greg Henry – Chief Judge) worked arduously for months to deliver one of the most magnificent contests the Division has ever seen.

Innovation, creativity and leadership were at the forefront throughout the planning and execution of the event. There was a Chinese Auction with luxurious spa packages, restaurant gift cards and exquisite home décor. Made to order meals were delivered by skilled servers while guests enjoyed an entertaining Hula Hoop Contest presented by future Toastmasters in the making (6 year old Josh Katz and 12 year old Michael Katz), where Toastmaster Kris Dawkins received “Division D’s Best Hula Hooper” Award.

Contestant performances were outstanding, each one representing the best of their respective Areas. In the Humorous Speech Contest, competing Toastmasters were James Boucher (Talk of the Town), Scott Doyle (Gold Coast and Palm Beach Advanced), Amy Eason (Palm City Orators), Laurie Fondiler (Freddy’s Forum), Bob Geller (Boca Raton Toastmasters) and Chris Gunning (West Boca Toastmasters). First place was awarded to Bob Geller, second place to Scott Doyle and third place to Laurie Fondiler.

In the Evaluation Contest, Tom Conboy (Freddy’s Forum), Scott Doyle (Gold Coast and Palm Beach Advanced), Judy Joffe (Boca Advanced), Richard Otten (Hobe Sound Toastmasters), Share Ross (Bill Gove Golden Gavel) and John Schneyer (Boca Raton Toastmasters) competed for the title. First place was awarded to Judy Joffe, second place to John Schneyer and third place to Scott Doyle.

Also displaying great talent was the Evaluation Contest’s test speaker, Jose Incer, who had the audience laughing from beginning to end with his study and analysis of nursery rhymes. As Evaluation contestant Scott Doyle stated, “I was happy you were not in the running of the humorous contest, because you were a tough act to follow”.

A special award was presented to one of Division D’s most empowering and helpful members. John Schneyer received the “Outstanding Toastmaster” award along with a standing ovation from fellow members in support of the Division D leader’s choice.

Mayor of WPB, Jeri Muoio, signed a proclamation declaring October 1, 2011, “Toastmasters Division D Day” and recognizing the efforts of the Contest Chair and her team in making this event a memorable one.

The Improv Comedy Club owners and staff welcomed Toastmasters Division D warmly, providing anything and everything needed to help make this event grand. Their generosity and kindness allowed us to provide the contestants and audience members with a unique contest experience. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts for their immense generosity.

Fun, enjoyment and learning led the way to the success of this event. Let’s cheer to celebrate this magnificent day and toast to the next Division D grand event!

At the Area 61 Evaluation Contest on Wednesday September 21, the audience was treated to Diana Friedman's speech, "If Diana Ruled the World." She whimsically spoke about the laws she would establish such as clothing should not match and everyone wears sensible shoes. Diana's speech was evaluated by contestants Bernadette Azai, Steve Zeris, Deborah Carey-Reed, and Pete Blews.

Later in the Humorous Speech Contest four competitors kept their audience "in stitches". As it turned out, there was a common thread in three of the speeches... husbands! Bernadette Azai talked about her husband's various collections in, "My Husband's Hobby". Sandra Visser's "Almost Heaven", was about the first year of her marriage. The audience learned about Mary Moeller's husband's concern for his family's welfare in her speech, "Safety First". Steve Moore did not speak about husbands, but about the many uses and wonders of "Duct Tape."

Contest Chair was Troy Manning; Contest Master, was Ken Griffin, and Chief Judge, was Michele Russell. Evaluation Contest Winner was Steve Zeris & Bernadette Azai was the Winner of the Humorous Speech Contest. They represented Area 61 in the Division F Evaluation & Humorous Speech Contests held on Saturday October 1, in Sarasota.

Team Titan Delivers Hope & LoveTeam Titan Toastmasters in Area 44 is a newly formed corporate club. They are lucky to have a generous company that pays their TI dues. The members were compelled to donate the dues they would have paid to charity. When the management at Titian America heard this they agreed to match the donation dollar for dollar. This resulted in a very substantial donation to Jessica June Children’s Cancer Foundation. The Foundation responded with thanks for the generous contribution and the story of the child they helped with those funds and how it impacted the life at Broward county child fighting cancer.

Sebastian’s story: Sebastian is a joyful 3 year old fighting Lymphoma at Joe Di Maggio Children’s Hospital. Sebastian and his family moved from New York in February of this year, leaving behind their entire support system. Shortly after the move to South Florida, Mom found out she was expecting a baby. With the chaos of the move and another baby on the way, this family was already under much stress; then on Mother’s day of this year, Sebastian became ill and had to be rushed to Joe DiMaggio where he started to fall in and out of consciousness. He was revived and later the family was told that he had cancer. In late September JJCCF received an application for this family who was struggling to pay their rent and feed their children. With the support of gracious donors like Titan, JJCCF was able to provide this family with emergency financial assistance to pay their rent in the amount of $1,368 and provide Publix gift cards totaling $631. Thank you Titan employees for your impactful support! For more information visit - www.JJCCF.org and you may read stories about individual children - http://jjccf.org/category/children-urgent-needs/

50 Years Old & Good as GoldAnd we don’t mind getting older!

By: Saundra Sacks, ATM, CL, 50th Anniversary Meeting Chairperson

Fifty years ago on October 21, 1961, Pompano Beach Toastmasters Club (PBTM) received its charter. Last month on October 24, 2011,, we celebrated our 50th Anniversary with a very special Reminiscent program. Even our cakes were special as they were decorated with a copy of our charter and banner.

Our keynote speaker was our very own Mitch Sandler, ACS, CL, whose speech, “Did You Know?”, gave us a behind - the - scenes look at the founding of Toastmasters by Dr. Ralph C. Smedley. Then Mitch compared our club’s own beginnings with how we have

progressed through the years, including our members’ many accomplishments. Pompano Beach Toastmasters has been a Select Distinguished Club for 4 consecutive years.

Another highlight of the evening was the Reminiscent interviews conducted by 26 year member, Saundra Sacks. Martin Menter, the Club’s longest continuous TM member (at 40 years!), recalled the day he joined Toastmasters, the men he met and the fact that he had to be dressed in a suit and tie to be at a Toastmaster Meeting by 7 a.m. Those were the days when the men adhered to a strict dress code. Lynda Menter, a 27 year member, recalled her TM claim to fame as being the First Woman to join PBTM “and STAY”. You see women were shunned by the then all- boys club.

Saundra, Martin & Lynda relayed an incident that happened one evening in the early 1990’s after a TM meeting at Denny’s. There had been a car accident outside the restaurant on Federal Highway in Pompano when the “3 Musketeers” went to see what all the commotion was about. Two cars were involved in an accident. As the police cars were flashing their blue lights and the “3 Musketeers” were on the sidewalk as innocent observers, another car came careening down the highway. The driver of the car became distracted, hit a tree and ran onto the sidewalk, we were all dumbstruck as Lynda shouted “RUN.” Saundra heeded her advice in time as Lynda tried to pull Martin away. He was not quick enough, however, resulting in the car hitting him in the foot and knocking off his shoe. The police and paramedics were kept busy that evening but thank goodness Martin was not seriously injured. Fortunately, we were able to joke about it and wondered if attending Toastmasters was indeed dangerous. Today we meet at John Knox Village which is not on a main thoroughfare.

We were honored to have Hieu Huynh, DTMx2, D47 LGM-East, drive 50 miles to share in this special evening with us. He pointed out that if you write the year we were chartered - 1961 on a piece of paper, then turn it upside down, it still reads 1961. Hieu extended his good wishes, and those of other District Officers. He presented our club with a certificate from TMI World Headquarters marking our 50th Anniversary.

Daniel Antezana our Sgt.-at-Arms read the Proclamation issued on behalf of the Mayor and City of Pompano Beach.

Nothing could describe the glory of the evening better than these words by our keynote speaker Mitch Sandler: “It turned out 110% perfectly! Just like a well delivered speech, no one knows how much work went into it except the person who prepared it!”

We have a truly international club with members from Africa, Australia, Bolivia, France, Iceland, Jamaica, Romania and the United States. While we take Toastmasters seriously, we pride ourselves as a friendly, nurturing club, empathetic to the needs of our individual members. As we turn 50 it is heartwarming to see our younger members taking on leadership roles. After all, in the words of our president, Keith Herring, “Pompano Beach Toastmasters is THE Best Club ever”.

Pompano Beach Toastmasters Club # 3003, Area 21, Division B, District 47, Region 8meets on Monday evenings at 7 p.m. at John Knox Village, 651 SW 6th Street, Pompano Beach, FL 33060.

The family, friends and fellow club members of

Jack Boldrick, DTM1937 - 2011

Distinguished Toastmaster, Jack Boldrick, DTM, died October 1, 2011 in Tampa, Florida at the age of 74 after an eight year battle with Parkinson’s disease, ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and chronic arthritis. Jack had been a continuous member of The Tampa Club 1810, since joining Toastmasters in 1964. He not only served in every office (some offices several times), in 1979 he became the first club member to achieve the status of Distinguished Toastmaster.

He coordinated numerous Speechcraft and Youth Leadership programs throughout his 47 year membership and served as the club’s unofficial mentor. Jack led by example, never delivering a speech that wasn’t thoroughly prepared nor demanding more of others than he was willing to contribute himself. His dedication to the principles and goals of Toastmasters was unwavering.

Jack will be missed by past and present members who were touched by his unconditional support. At the memorial service, former Toastmaster, James Tokley, eulogized Jack with a poem.
