Electronic Unit Injector (EUI). Themechanically-actuated, electronicallycontrolled unit injector combines anelectronic actuator, pump assembly andnozzle into a single, compact unit forreliability and durability. The 3176Cfuel system has been tested in thousandsof engines in some of the most demandingapplications and environments aroundthe world.

Cylinder Block. Engine durability beginswith its foundation - the engine block.The serpentine design of the 3176Cblock provides maximum strength in areduced weight design. It is a single-piece, deep-skirted design that providesa solid base for the durability yourequire in today’s D7R Series 2.

Cylinder Head. The 3176C cylinder headis designed for maximum breathing,which helps ensure excellent fuelefficiency. This one-piece, stress-relieved, gray-iron casting has fourvalves per cylinder. Robust intake andexhaust valves aid airflow and provideexcellent reliability and fuel efficiency.

Pistons. The two-piece, articulatedpiston design consists of a forged-steelcrown for maximum strength and acast aluminum skirt to reduce weight.A large piston pin holds the crown,skirt and connecting rod together.The aluminum skirt runs cooler thanconventional pistons, allowing a closerfit to the cylinder liner and providinglonger life. The steel crown handlesthe higher internal pressures oftoday’s engines.

Crankshaft. The crankshaft is a steelforging with induction-hardenedjournals and fillets. The wide centerand end main journals and bearings aredesigned to maintain maximum oil filmthickness for excellent lubrication andfor cooling the bearings. The result islong life-to-overhaul.

EngineThe 3176C engine, matched with the torque divider and field proven power shifttransmission, provides years of dependable service.

Two Pass Cooling System. Using a twopass system, the AMOCS radiatorprovides a more efficient heat exchange.The coolant is routed from a sectionedbottom tank up the front side, over thetop of the core and down the engineside of the core to the bottom tank.This flow pattern allows the coolantto pass through the radiator twice forbetter cooling.

Modular Design. The cooling elementsare individual core modules that areconnected to a sectioned bottom tank.There is no top tank to remove.

• Standard 9 steel fins per 2.54 cm(1 in), or an optional 6 steel finsper 2.54 cm (1 in).

• Brass tube construction within eachcore for improved reliability.

Separate Circuit Aftercooling.The D7R Series 2 features a SeparateCircuit Aftercooler. Two of the AMOCScores are dedicated to the aftercoolercoolant circuit to achieve cooler inletair temperatures, which increasesperformance and improves engineemissions. A separate water pump isused to circulate the aftercooler coolant.

Serviceability. The modular core designpermits removal of a single core withoutremoving the entire radiator, whichreduces repair costs and downtime.AMOCS also eliminates the top tank,side channels and one sealing surface,making it more reliable and easier toservice. It also features a site gaugefor quick service checks.

Protection From Leaks. To reduce thepotential for coolant leaks, brass tubesare welded to a large, thick header,improving strength of the tube-to-headerjoint. In conditions where abrasivematerials can be airborne, the attachmentsand blast grid should be used to preventcore damage.

Sand Blast Grid. In an application whereairborne debris is prevalent, radiatorcore protection is a concern. To extendradiator life in harsh applications, asand blast grid is available as an optionto deflect the damaging debris theengine fan propels at the radiator.

Torque Divider. An improved single-stage torque converter sends 70% ofengine torque through a converter and30% through a direct drive shaft forgreater driveline efficiency and highertorque multiplication. The torque dividerprovides improved efficiency andbroader range of performance in secondgear dozing and scraper pushloading.

Transmission. The D7R Series 2planetary power shift transmissionfeatures three speeds forward andthree speeds reverse and utilizes largediameter, high-capacity, oil cooledclutches. To maximize the life of thetransmission the planetary designdistributes loads and stresses overmultiple gears.

• Controlled throttle shifting regulatesengine speed during high energydirectional shifts for smoother, morecomfortable operation and longercomponent life.

• Electronic modulations systempermits fast speed and directionchanges.

• Modular transmission and bevel gearslide into rear case for servicing ease,even with ripper installed.

Drawbar Pull vs Ground Speed.As loads on the tractor increase, theD7R Series 2 offers unmatched luggingcapability and smooth shifting as theneed occurs to change gears undervarying loads. The 3-speed forward,3-speed reverse transmission offersexcellent runout speeds.

Differential Steering. A D7R Series 2equipped with differential steeringmaintains power to both tracks whileturning. The tractor turns when one trackspeeds up and the other slows down anequal amount. The operator can steer andcontrol the transmission simultaneously,which can reduce cycle times in someapplications. The differential steeringtiller bar has touch shift buttons forupshifts and downshifts. The tiller baritself is easily rotated forward or reverseto change the respective tractor direction.The tiller bar is moved forward to steerthe tractor to the left and pulled backto go right. Low tiller bar efforts assureoperator comfort during long shifts.Large blade loads can be maneuveredaround buildings, bridge abutments, treesor other obstacles. Steering modulationis also optimized for precise control inthese applications. Greater load capacity,power and speed control are possiblein soft underfoot conditions on steepslopes because both tracks are poweredduring turns.

Elevated Final Drive. Isolates finaldrives from ground and work toolinduced impact loads for extendedpower train life.

Auto-Shift/Auto-Kickdown. Auto-shiftallows the operator to pre-select a forwardand reverse gear for easy, efficientdirectional changes. Auto-shift settingsinclude first forward to second reverse,second forward to second reverseand second forward to first reverse.Auto-kickdown allows the transmissionto automatically downshift whensignificant load increases are detected.

Cab. Isolation-mounted, pressurized cabreduces noise and vibration for operatorcomfort.

Clear Working View. Operator has anexcellent view to the blade and rear ofthe machine for maximum operatorproductivity. The tapered hood givesthe operator a clear line of sight to thefront work area. The low rear windowlets the operator see the ripper tip.The large single-pane door windowsallow the operator to see both endsof the blade.

Dash. An informed operator is aproductive operator. With a newlydesigned dash, the operator will be keptinformed of the machine status andsystem information. The analog gaugesare easy to read and a warning lampkeeps the operator aware of any actionthat is needed. A new feature for theD7R Series 2 is the addition of thefoot pads on the dash. These foot padshelp the operator stay confident andcomfortable during slope applications.

Electronic Steering And TransmissionControl. The D7R Series 2 has standardDifferential Steering, which gives theD7R Series 2 the maneuverability andcontrol that operators need to match tothe applications. The touch buttons on thesteering control shifts the electronicallycontrolled powershift transmission.

Work Tool Controls. Low effort pilotoperated hydraulics for the work toolsmake the D7R Series 2 easy to operateand provides sure, precise blade controlwith less operator fatigue. Lower leverefforts and ergonomically shaped bladeand ripper control handles provideincreased operator comfort duringlong shifts.

Work Tool Lockout Rocker Switch.When engaged, the lockout preventsinadvertent operation of the hydraulicwork tool attachments.

Throttle Rocker Switch. A rockerswitch control sets the high or low idlewith a touch of the finger. A deceleratorpedal gives the operator full control ofengine speed when the rocker switch isin the high idle position.

Caterpillar Comfort Series Seat.The D7R Series 2 features a newCat Comfort Series Seat for increasedoperator comfort and reduced operatorfatigue. The seat is fully adjustableand designed for comfort and support.The seat and back cushions are thickerand designed to reduce pressure on thelower back and thighs while allowingunrestricted arm and leg movement.

Dozers. With moldboard constructionand hardened bolt-on cutting edges,Caterpillar bulldozer blades load easilyand are durable. In tough applications,Caterpillar blades resist torsionalbending and distortion thanks totheir high-tensile strength.

Universal Blade. The U blade is efficientat moving big loads over long distances.It’s ideal for light or relatively easilydozed material.

Semi-Universal Blade. Built for toughapplications where penetration is moreimportant than capacity. The SU bladeis more aggressive in penetrating andloading material than the U blade. Theblade wings are designed for superiorload retention and penetration. It canbe configured with a push plate forpushloading scrapers.

Straight Blade. The S blade providesexcellent versatility. Since it is physicallysmaller than the SU or U blade its easierto maneuver and can handle a widerange of materials. The S blade ismore aggressive when penetratinghard materials.

Angle Blade. The angle blade is mountedto a C-frame, using a pinned connectionwhich permits blade angling and tilting,left or right.

Cutting Edges. In tough applications,high-tensile strength Cat DH-2 steelcutting edges resist torsional bendingand distortion. End bits are DH-3 toprovide maximum service life intough materials.

Load Sensing Hydraulics.The D7R Series 2 features field-provenload-sensing pilot controlled hydraulics,which respond to operating requirementsby automatically and continuallyadjusting attachment hydraulic power.

Multi-Shank Ripper. The multi-shankparallelogram ripper is adjustable andlets you choose one, two or three shanksdepending on job conditions.

Winches.

Frame And Castings. The D7R Series 2frame is built to absorb high impactshock loads and twisting forces.Castings provide added strength to themain case and equalizer bar saddle.

Tag-Link. The tag-link blade mountingbrings the blade closer to the machinefor excellent maneuverability, machinebalance and blade penetration. The tag-link design provides solid lateralstability and better cylinder positionsfor constant pryout independent ofblade height. The tag-link also

eliminates the need for diagonal bracingbecause it transfers side loads to themainframe instead of the dozer pusharms.

Pivot Shaft. The pivot shaft runsthrough the mainframe and connectsto the roller frames for independentoscillation. The full-length pivot shaftdistributes impact loads throughout thecase, reducing bending stresses on thecase. This design eliminates alignmentproblems and the need for diagonalbraces on the roller frames. Caterpillartrack-type tractors set the industrystandard for mainframe durability.

Equalizer Bar. The pinned equalizerbar gives the roller frames the abilityto oscillate up or down to better matchground contours while providingmaximum traction and operatorcomfort. Equalizer bar end pins areoil filled with limited slip seals forlonger life and reduced repair costs.
