DANIEL HALE WILLIAMS
• Born January 18, 1858
• Graduated from Chicago Medical School in 1883
• Worked with the Equal Rights League
• First nationally renowned African American surgeon
• Performed first successful open heart surgery 1893 on James Cornish
• Appointed chief surgeon at Freedmen’s Hospital 1894
• Visiting clinical professor at Meharry
• Founded Provident Hospital
PROVIDENT HOSPITAL
• Founded in 1891 in Chicago
• First non-segregated hospital in the United States
• Was forced to close in 1987, but was reopened in 1993 as Provident Hospital of Cook County
