Principal: Mr Stephen Crossley Ph. 55232218 Fax. 55217839 PO Box 317 Portland Vic 3305 [email protected] www.portlandbayschool.vic.edu.au School Council President: Deb Robinson 0428 995 987 From the Principals Desk A special welcome to Talon Polhuis who has started in group 2 this week. Talon and his family have moved to Portland from Canberra and we wish them all the best and hope they enjoy living in the district. Talon is our 50 th student which is a milestone and the first time we have reached that number. Well done to everyone who participated in Milo Cricket last Friday, Thank you to everyone who helped make the event fun and a great success, we can see a few budding cricketers in the future. Sailing I had a lovely morning on Wednesday visiting group 2 and some of group 4 while they sailed at Portland Bay. It was a perfect day with light winds and smooth waters and everyone had a lovely time interacting with each other, the boats and the environment. Thanks to the Portland Yacht Club for the use of their facilities. A special thanks to the students in group 5 who acted as leaders and mentors throughout the day. Emma, Annette, Adam and Liam did a terrific job teaching and keeping everyone safe. Some photos are in todays newsletter. New School Progress On the way back to school I went past the new school and noted the progress. The administration, kitchen and multi-purpose room are taking shape with construction of the learning studios to commence in the coming weeks. Expected completion is on track with a likely move in date on the first day of term 2 in 2018. Upwelling Festival The school will again participate in the community Upwelling Festival on Saturday November 4. There is a musical theme this year so students will be learning songs to perform on the day. Charlotte Elliott is coordinating this year and we will provide further information as we get closer. 3 Bays Marathon A notice was sent home for expression of interest for students to participate in this year s 3 Bays Marathon, Sunday November 5th. Please return this form or contact the school if your student wishes to be involved. A team will be only submitted depending on our numbers. We will keep everyone informed. Reminder – Pupil Free Curriculum Day Monday Nov 6 There will be no school for students on this day, as staff will be completing training. This is the day before the Melbourne Cup holiday. Staff will be working on Communi- cation strategies for the classroom. SunSmart Portland Bay School is a SunSmart school and all students are required to wear a wide- brimmed hat during term 4 and apply sunscreen as needed to protect themselves from the sun. Students mostly leave their hats at school for convenience. The school has plenty of sunscreen but students are also welcome to bring their own from home if they prefer. It is also important to drink plenty of water on hot days. Enjoy your weekend ……… Steve Crossley, Principal.
