Neurology clerkship
Under the supervision of Dr L. Keith Simmons I developed a standardized clinical core
curriculum for 4th year medical students and wrote a multiple-choice exam to assess attainment
of educational goals.
Oklahoma State University – College of Medicine 1997
Procedure Proficiency Project
Due to the low number of procedures performed by Internal Medicine Residents and the
requirement by many institutions of a minimum number of procedures to be credentialed. We
developed a web based procedure atlas that was accessible from any workstation in the
institution. A curriculum was then developed for all matriculating residents to undergo a cadaver
based procedure skills workshop prior to the start of the residency. Outcomes of this intervention
were assessed with a survey and multiple-choice examination. http://mayoweb.mayo.edu/im-
res/procedures/bedside/procedures-main.htm

Cardiac Surgery ICU Rotation
Mayo trained critical care fellows had little to no exposure to post-operative management of
cardiac surgery patients. Management of these types of patients will be required of most
graduates of our fellowship program. A survey of the fellows indicated a need for this training. A
curriculum and rotation for internal medicine critical care fellows was developed and
implemented.
Mayo Clinic Critical Care Fellowship Program
Rochester, Minnesota 2005
Hemodynamics Workshop
This workshop is designed to introduce the student to the waveforms and readings obtained with
hemodynamic monitoring equipment. Practical experience will be obtained in setting up
monitors and modules. Specific areas discussed include Systemic Arterial monitoring, and
Pulmonary Arterial Catheters revealing Right Atrial, Right Ventricular, Pulmonary Arterial, and
Pulmonary Capillary Wedge readings. Cardiac output measurements and the calculated
cardiovascular parameters of cardiac index, vascular resistance, and stroke work indices are
presented in detail. Through case studies, students have opportunity to apply the information
learned in the program to actual patient care decisions.

Intensive Care Unit Infectious Disease
Educational experience designed for fellows to develop clinical expertise in the diagnosis and
management of nosocomial and community acquired acute, life-threatening infections in
critically ill adult patients, gain clinical competence in management, maintenance, and removal
of indwelling venous access catheters and administration of antimicrobial and biological
products via all routes.

Introduction to Bronchoscopy Course
This curriculum is designed to advance the novice bronchoscopist to a level of competency,
which will enable them to perform a supervised flexible bronchoscopic intubation and complete
inspection down to the segmental level in a timely fashion. This is accomplished through a
combination of self-study, self-directed simulated bronchoscopy and facilitated simulated
bronchoscopy.
Mayo Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship
Rochester, Minnesota 2006
Advanced Critical Care
This curriculum is designed for senior fellows; it is an experience with graduated responsibility.
It is expected that the fellow will have mastered core critical care concepts and skills prior to this
experience.
Mayo Clinic Critical Care Fellowship Program 2007
Cardiac Intensive Care
This experience is designed for the advanced fellow to gain experience in the diagnosis, therapy,
and management of cardiovascular patients, including acute myocardial infarction and the acute
coronary syndromes within the coronary care unit
Mayo Clinic Critical Care Fellowship Program 2007
Experiential Education
This is a 1-month rotation in experiential education. The fellow will assume the role of and is
expected to function within the Mayo Multidisciplinary Simulation Center both as learner and
junior faculty (as the experiential component).
Mayo Clinic Critical Care Fellowship Program 2007
Respiratory Care Unit

Central Line Workshop
A combination of simulation training and practical experience within the gross anatomy
laboratory in order to provide an optimized environment for teaching and assessing learner
proficiency in central line placement prior to performance of this risk-laden procedure within a
clinical rotation.
Mayo Multidisciplinary Simulation Center 2007
Thoracentesis and Thoracic Ultrasound Workshop
The goal of this half day workshop is to introduce the learner to the concepts of thoracic
ultrasound as it pertains to thoracentesis. At the end of this course the learner should have the
key concepts and skills needed to perform ultrasound-guided thoracentesis under supervision.
Mayo Multidisciplinary Simulation Center 2007
Airway Management Workshop
Rickman, Otis B., D.O. (Continued)
11
Two part workshop designed to introduce the learner to basic airway management skills, airway
team leadership and airway management planning. The goal of the second workshop is to
familiarize learners with advanced methods for airway management in the critically ill patient.
Mayo Clinic Critical Care Fellowship Program 2008
Rapid Assessment Triage and Stabilization Team
This experience is designed to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to acutely manage
unstable critically ill patients. Specifically senior fellows will develop triage and stabilization
skills of the critically ill patient via rapid systematic bedside assessment.
Mayo Clinic Critical Care Fellowship Program 2008
Mechanical Ventilation Workshop
The goals of this workshop are to provide the learner with a fundamental working knowledge of
ventilators, understand various modes of ventilation and be able to recognize and troubleshoot
common problems. It is taught entirely from interactive sessions that utilize mechanical
ventilators, mechanical test lungs, and mannequins. PowerPoint slides are not employed for this
workshop. White boards are available “at the bedside” to emphasize specific teaching points and
concepts inter-currently. Faculty avoid traditional didactic lectures. Students are educationally
imprinted by putting their hands on the machines and the “patients.” This problem-based
learning approach imparts a more durable fund of knowledge. Mayo Multidisciplinary
Simulation Center 2008
Lung cancer
This curriculum is designed to develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes of fellows to care for
outpatients with lung cancer, mediastinal adenopathy and pulmonary nodules. Mayo Pulmonary
and Critical Care Fellowship 2008
