Some families from our school community have already experienced what this involves and the overall feedback has been a positive one. They reported back on a very successful tour to schools with our Bay College Student Ambassadors providing first hand feedback to the many questions asked. These three days were followed by an open week at Bay College in which a couple of families took the opportunity to visit. The year 8 students from our contributing schools also had their orientation day last week, where they spent the day here at College. They experienced a typical day at college and met with many of the staff they would be interacting with during their time at Bay of Islands College. The Mid Year Senior Examinations were held last week and the students that participated were able to experience first-hand the conditions that they can expect in the NZQA end of year external examinations. A Message from our

Principal

E nga iwi, e nga reo, e nga karangatanga maha o nga hau e wha,

tenei te mihi atu ki a koutou katoa.

This term began for staff with two days of inspirational professional

development around Restorative Justice presented by a world

renowned authority on this subject, Margaret Thorsborne. Bay of

Islands College can now formally announce that we are a

Restorative Justice School. Some families from our school community

have already experienced what this involves and the overall

feedback has been a positive one.

We wished Deputy Principal Annette Wynyard our very best on her

medical leave and Mrs Ruth Hills was appointed to the position of

Acting Deputy Principal. Mrs Hills was already a member of the

Senior Leadership Team and her institutional knowledge and her

experience has insured a smooth transition.

Whaea Patsy Bray and Mrs Ninni Smyth took over the role of visiting

our contributing schools to meet and speak to the Year 8’s. They

reported back on a very successful tour to schools with our Bay

College Student Ambassadors providing first hand feedback to the

many questions asked. These three days were followed by an open

week at Bay College in which a couple of families took the

opportunity to visit.

The year 8 students from our contributing schools also had their

orientation day last week, where they spent the day here at College.

They experienced a typical day at college and met with many of the

staff they would be interacting with during their time at Bay of

Islands College.

The Mid Year Senior Examinations were held last week and the

students that participated were able to experience first-hand the

conditions that they can expect in the NZQA end of year external

examinations. I am pleased to report that staff who supervised the

examinations were impressed with how our students used this

practise opportunity. Students who missed the examination will be

provided one more opportunity to sit these.

Koroneihana (Coronation Celebration of the Maori King

Tuheitia)

It was a privilege and an honour to accompany the school Kapa Haka

Group to perform at Ngaruawahia to the Maori King Tuheitia, his

wife Te Atawhai, their children, grandchildren and the Kahui Ariki

( The Kings Council ). We were hosted by the people of Waikare

Marae in Te Kauwhata and slept in a meeting house called Ngati

Hine. We learnt about our whanaungatanga (connections) to Tainui

and the Kingitanga. Our student’s performance stunned the

audience and attracted much praise because the performance was

personalised toward the King and his Council. It was a compliment

to be issued an invitation to return.

I look forward to meeting as many of you as I can on the Parent,

Student, and Teacher Conference Day on 3 September.

Ethan King

My experiment is about how

to produce water using

nature and a plastic bag, and

how this can be useful as a

survival tactic.

Tyra-Lee Tana & Jean Brown

We tested different brands of

chocolates to see which one

is best for making chocolate

decorations.

Antz Maddren & Tamika

Hancy-Tupou

We investigated the effect of

talking or texting on a

cellphone on people's

reaction time.

Tyra Wills & Kacey Apiata

We tested our

freshwater ways for types of

pollution in the water we also

monitored our local fresh

waters to determine whether

or not they're polluted.

Bay of Islands College was honoured to host the Defence Force Careers bus for a day on its biannual visit to Northland. Selected

classes at all year levels were rotated through the bus to hear a presentation about the range of career opportunities offered and the

entry requirements for each.

One enlightening statistic was that for 2014, the Defence Force had 1200 places available, for which they had 14,000 applicants.

The implication of this for students and parents is that candidates need to be successful level 3 (Year 13) students and to support this

with an active and involved extracurricular/ leadership portfolio.

DEAN ABRAHAMS worked alongside Bronson

Silveria and his team at Fell Engineering Ltd in

Haruru Falls. Deans employer was impressed

with his easy going nature and his willingness to

learn and his conscientious and careful approach

to all tasks given. Dean has decided he wants to

be an engineer, hopefully in the Navy and to do

this he needs to finish school gaining NCEA

Level 3.

CHARLES REWHA worked with Robert Scott

and his team at Kawakawa Auto Services Ltd,

Kawakawa. Charles really enjoyed his

placement and is real keen to explore this as a

career pathway. He put into practice what he is

learning in the classroom with Mr Work in

Industry Studies and Materials Technology

with Mr Luzak

This year the Bay of Islands College Ball was held on the 25th July at the

Scenic Hotel in Paihia. Students had a delicious buffet meal , got heaps

of photos taken in the photo booth and danced the night away to the

sounds of a DJ. Everybody looked wonderful dressed up and the students

were great representatives for the school.

A big thank you to staff and parents who attended.
