This month our program is entitled “Captivating Caves” and will focus on types of caves, history of formation, underground life forms and the food chain. 4-H Record Books will also be discussed during January club meetings. Record book completion is an important part of the 4-H program. We are very impressed with the clubs who are working on their rec- ord books each month. This keeps the kids interested and the work is getting done. Record books will be due in the 4-H Office February 25. All 5-12 grade books must be in a binder. 4-H record book binders will be available in January and February for $2.50. As our annual phone book recycling drive comes to an end, leaders, do not forget to report how many books your club collected and brought to the Recycling Foundation. If you are looking for the specific details on the drive, please refer to the November or the December issue of the Leader Update. A copy can be found on our parish webpage. Thanks to all leaders who encouraged their 4-H members to complete the Award of Excellence and the Key Club Award applications. Those applications qualifying for the award will be forwarded to the state 4-H office for competition. As soon as results are in, we will print them in the Leader Up-date. These awards will be presented at the 4-H Honors Program.

January Community Service –Arbor Day
Arbor Day will be celebrated in Louisiana on Friday, January 21, 2011. We are inviting all clubs to do something special for Arbor Day as the January CRD project. Here are a few suggestions:
Trees can be planted at schools or on public property only after permission has been granted.
Your club could plant a tree on the school grounds and dedicate it as a memorial, a living monument to someone who has made contributions to your community or school.
Another idea is to help re-landscape an area of your school or local park.

Character Counts
As we start the new year, lets start on the right foot. Let’s make a promise to make the world a better place. One way to keep that promise is to practice the six pillars of character. January is the month for Trustworthiness. A trustworthy person is a person of integrity. A person who stands up for his/her beliefs. If you are trustworthy you follow your conscience. Always have the courage to do what is right and to try new things even when its hard. Being trustworthy means always telling the truth and nothing but the truth. Be sincere. Don’t lie, cheat, steal, or sneak. Just practice the pillars of character and start the year off right!

4-H Goes 4G: Globally Growing- Geauxing Green
This year’s 4-H statewide service learning project is “4-H Goes 4G”. This is a statewide campaign for environmental awareness. The idea is that each parish would assess their needs and build an environmental service-learning project. One of the top ten environmental
service projects is Recycling. Today, many communities have recycling programs. If yours happens to be one of the communities without such a program, contact your town/city hall or company that picks up the refuse in your neighborhood for information on how to start such a program.
